So the Ministry of Social Development is cutting funding for budgeting services. I wonder if Ministry staff are taking the mickey out of its Minister and the Government. Basically the funding supports the bare bones structure which enables a multitude of volunteers to offer budgeting advice and help people under pressure to sort their finances. This means that such people could be less prone to abusing partners, children and others. They may be less likely to shoplifting or commit fraud. This would seem to be entirely in accord with the Government’s aim to reduce welfare dependency via its Social Investment policy. It is most likely that funding for budgeting services is providing great value for money and cutting this funding could well cause a significant cost blowouts elsewhere.
The responsible Minister needs to ask for a ‘please explain’ and ask why savings cannot be achieved elsewhere that does not affect delivery of services. After all, this is what Nicola Willis and the Government intended.

    The Departments’ CEO’s and their senior managers should know better than that. It is their job to be in tune to the aspirations of the new Government with regard to ‘Social Investment’ and the like. The MSD Chief Executive can always seek guidance on this sort of thing. You are suggesting that the Government should have warned Ministries against making cuts that result in reductions in services rather than seeking better efficiency. Such a warning should not be necessary, CEO’s and their senior managers are expected to realise this without being told. They work for the Government – they do not work for the Labour Party.

      It is the wrong approach for two reasons.
      
      Firstly Some agencies should be cut by way more than a standard across the board approach.
      
      Secondly it takes reshaping the ministries out of the hands of ministers. This is not the first rodeo. Bill English had to do this in 2009. He kept control of the fiscal consolidation with Ministers by reviewing every agency and having a committee of the Finance Ministers and the portfolio ministers make decisions on the cuts. Finally the whole package went to Cabinet.

      Disclosure: I was the principal author of the review of a large government agency.
      
      EDIT. Public servants setting out to deliberately sabotage ministers is rare. Im not saying it does not happen. But I have never seen it or heard of it in appointments at more than 10 government agencies.

      Isn’t greatest problem in that many of the senior Public Servants are the specific appointments of the Ardern Government, and thanks to their promotions for thinking like her !
      And they will not actually change, no matter what they appear to do, and cannot wait for the next Labour woman led Prime Minister as soon as possible but they can wait.

    I agree. The “across the board” approach is brainless. Some areas need strengthening – for example, we don’t have 1st world-level ICU capacity, and we need to pay our police force better. Whereas some commissions (and even whole departments) could disappear completely as far as I’m concerned. For example, I’d love to know what essential services are provided by the Ministry for Women, Ministry for Youth Development, Ministry for Ethnic Communities etc. And the Tertiary Education Commission is a complete waste of money – they’re the plonkers who threatened to fine universities if they don’t somehow eliminate ethnic disparities in pass rates.

      Public servants are there to do their jobs. Pretending that public servants can only be relied on to perform tasks is beyond the pale.
      
      Many in the media appear to act like public servants are victims! Many people approaching public servants for assistance feel victimised.
      
      I have generally experienced reasonable service. My main complaint is that it is hard to find a person who can help one. I often feel that I am being moved on with little attempt to help me deal with my problem. (Someone else’s problem, keep moving!)

    No they didn’t. Responsible public servents should act appropriately on the directions given. There is a ton of fat at these ministries but some are purposely going after areas that will cause political harm, regardless of the damage to actual people it will cause.
    
    Do you really think MSD is so well run they couldn’t shave 6.5% off operational costs without doing ‘stunts’ like this?

    Re across the baord cuts. There is nothing wrong with the govt asking for accross the baord cuts, its a quick way to get spending under control while deeper analysis and further cuts or changes take place. It is not like there isn’t fat in the whole system.
    
    If we were to wait for MPs to go through dept by dept we would be running labour like deficits for the next 9 years while the process rolls on.

I find gaslighting insidious. IMO this is classic gaslighting by Julie Anne Genter.

Observe how she has turned the narrative upside down. She is the victim. She was confronted by angry people. She needs help to learn how to “walk away” from the angry people.

She says “she was fully cooperating with the party’s process “to get me more support”.

In her mind she encounters angry people who verbally harangue her. She is to receive counselling or therapy about how to safely escape from the angry people.🤔😕

The journalist could have pushed back on this narrative, simply by reminding her that in the Parliament episode she was not confronted by an angry person. Rather, she advanced angrily on an MP who was sitting quietly in his seat. 😳

A former Wellington City counsellor recounts being spotted by JAG at a private event which he was attending to support his mother, who was in line for an award of some kind. JAG made a bee line for him and confronted him about the slow progress of cycleways in Wellington. He reports that everyone in the vicinity turned to see what was going on. 🙁

        a) Genter knew of her as she is vocally against the cycle lanes
        
        b) Genter came into the florist under the ‘pretence’ of buying flowers but it was apparent she really wasn’t interested in them at all.
        
        Not sure I believe b but I totally believe a which does give b some credibility. Why would you go to a store of someone who is publicly opposed to your cycle lane and is known to be very angry with you over their loss of business. Are there no other florists in Wellington?

      Here she goes, walking or cycling down the road feeling worried and sad about her friend in hospital (as she claimed on TV1 last night).
      Decides to buy some flowers for friend.
      Goes into florist which has large sign in front window which says “WN City Council You’re Killing this Retail Precinct by Removing all the Car Parks
      Unfair, Unjust & Undemocratic.” ( see photo in article).
      Think I would have gone to another outlet for the flowers rather than risk a confrontation re car parks.
      But never let an opportunity go by to promote the cause…..I guess.

    1/ He was there to shoot member of a gang – and did
    
    2/ Was there to shoot a member of a gang – and shot a civilian by mistake (mistaken identity)
    
    3/ After being refused entry to the bar did a Graeme Burton and killed someone for no reason (Burtons first murder was of a sound tech walking up stairs to a bar off Chews Lane in Wellington, which Burton had just been thrown out of by bouncers. Killed the guy for no reason)
    
    4/ Was tripping and shot someone in a drug induced fog (unlikely he is acting very calmly in all the CCTV)
    
    Key question: Who is he on the phone too in the CCTV footage? seems to be talking calmly after the even…. to someone he knows..

On the face of it, MSD seems to be making an odd decision by removing funding from a Wellington budgeting service. And seems others may also be impacted by funding cuts.

However … appears that MSD has rationalised its procurement process and prefers to continue to fund the function but fewer organisations. That makes good sense – for example the Wellington funding is not a lot but it does cover a part-time manager and office and IT equipment. Advisers are predominantly volunteers. Assume similar in other locations.

Better procurement and fewer locations should mean better reporting and understanding of outcomes.

Meanwhile the volunteers will no doubt find a warm welcome at other budgeting services.

On this X post by Ayaan Hirsi Ali about the MeToo NPCs ignoring violence against Jewish women, the liar who tries to discredit her, shows a screen shot allegedly from Haaretz denying that there was sexual violence by Hamas during the October massacres.
You have to read down to someone posting the actual Haaretz article to see this was a complete fabrication, the problem is people who don’t take the time to find out, or whose prejudices will not allow them to see the truth.

Compare and contrast.

National’s Tim van de Molen was stripped of his portfolios after he was censured by Parliament’s Privileges Committee last year. Perception wise National acted with integrity.

But despite Julie Anne Genter awaiting possible censure by Parliament’s Privileges Committee soon, the Green Party yesterday has already stated that Ms Genter will retain her portfolios.

So it appears the leadership of the Green Party clearly thinks there is nothing to see here and despite multiple instances of Ms Genter demonstrating the same bad behavior time and time again.

Let’s hope that pressure is put on Marama Davidson and Chloe Swarbrick to justify not only their decision but also to justify their glaring lack of leadership and integrity.

  It is unlikely Joe is on coke. His handlers wouldn’t risk that. They’d use something that can be prescribed legally which would have the same effect. Such as ADHD medication. Ritalin, Adderal, Dextroamphetamine. Or perhaps some super drug we haven’t even heard of.

I guess I’ve two key questions regarding tikanga having a greater role in our legal framework.

1. Exactly how do New Zealanders supposedly benefit from this? How will our laws, law-making, our system of law and justice be better as a result?

2. Do we as citizens have a say in this? Do we get a voice in what system of law we wish for ourselves and be accountable to? Or is this something that will be imposed on us by the politicians and legal elites, and if we resist or merely have some questions then we are but racist dinosaurs, deserving of derision and scorn?

  Interestingly, Trump continually attacks the judges in his other trials, but has never attacked Justice Cannon.
  
  There’s two kinds of judicial corruption. One is the blatant type you see with Justice Clarence Thomas on the Supreme Court, where he is clearly in the pocket of billionaire donors. Another is the more subtle type that you see with Judge Aileen Cannon where she is, to all appearances, perverting the course of justice via delays and legal wild geese chasing. Just as she did with Trump’s earlier civil case in her court.
  
  The DoJ’s filings hint extremely strongly (as strongly as they possibly could pre-trial) that they have proof of Trump selling classified information to other countries. If true then that should be known to the US voter before the election. But it won’t be.
  
  Trump deserves his day in court, and is innocent until proven guilty. But the stakes of this case are so high for American democracy that it is immoral to delay this trial.

    The case is super weak and unlikely to survive appeal on numerous grounds – appeals that will take years and years and may end up before supreme court due to constitutional grounds of executive privilege. Hell it turns out that it was the Biden admin were the ones who sent most of the the files to Trump in the first place, let alone all the other FBI/DOJ malfeasance and Biden admin interference/collusion/direction as they worked to cook this case up.
    
    But of course this was always just lawfare, a failed attempt to nobble Trump’s election chances, and distract him and drain his finances. The process imposed by the bureaucratic state is, in fine Kafkaesque style, the punishment.
    
    And of course egregiously unequal application of the law is another grounds for appeal (14th amendment) when Biden was dead-to-rights law breaking on similar case with clear mens rea and for financial advantage, as was H Clinton, neither of whom were ever allowed to remove secret documents from secure facilities (unlike Trump who had carte balance as president) and yet both were given a free-pass by DOJ.

      Read the indictment and the Court filings. The case looks extremely strong. The details hinting at a sale of classified information are extremely worrying.
      
      As for the rest of your post … so many untruths:
      * The Biden admin didn’t send the files to Trump … Trump took them as he was leaving the White House, then refused to return them when asked to, and there are still missing files to this day.
      * There doesn’t appear to be any FBI/DoJ malfeasance … please detail any you think credibly happened
      * There are no signs of Biden admin interference or collusion … hell, if Biden’s interfering with the DoJ then why is Hunter in court next month?
      * Biden did find classified documents, voluntarily returned them as soon as he found them, and they were low-level documents not national defence secrets … read the Hur report.
      * The FBI found that 3 of the 30,000 emails on Hilary Clinton’s email server were classified … not to excuse her, she shouldn’t have run a private server at all, but Clinton’s case is apples and oranges from Trump’s.

  The waste is a function of no cultural norm that provides school lunches. Taiwanese kids and French kids eat their school lunches because they have been provided forever. The menus will not have changed much in 50 years

  Heat does not much a school lunch more nutritious than a cold school lunch. It does make it a whole lot more expensive to cook and dish up.
  
  Sandwiches OK, but still need a whole lot of people to prep, make, wrap and deliver. My idea is prepackaged cheese and crackers plus a piece of fruit. Boring, but anything not eaten goes back in the carton for tomorrow. Schools will soon see who is actually hungry. Kids that can’t get through the day without quinoa could mention to their parents.

    To the best of my limited knowledge, the use of antimony in batteries is limited to old-school lead acid batteries.
    
    Antimony is commonly alloyed with lead to make it harder and increase its general stability. As lead is getting used less and less, this usage will decrease.

    I believe antimony is quite common in NZ. From memory there used to be a mine in the Marlborough Sounds, which shut down a LONG time ago as it was unprofitable.

      It was in operation from 1883 -1908.

Kiwibloggers will recall that on Sunday [5 May], at General Debate, I put up an alternative description of what might have gone down in Midland Park that lunchtime. [It turns out the incident did not occur in December 2023, but more likely occurred in November 2022 (soon after the local elections, which saw the Labour/Green majority on council confirmed).]

In my response to NeverMindTheBollocks, I referred to “Ms Cranfield’s oh-so-innocent, butter-wouldn’t-melt description of her motivation for “approaching” Ms Genter, and what then ensued, […]. We all know what was going on here, and it backfired on Ms Cranfield. Good job!”

In the above article, Ms Genter says—

“It was another example, she said, of a situation where she [Genter] was ‘not prepared for the level of anger’ from a member of the public.”

So, there are two sides to this particular incident, of which I, rather than “making things up” [see All_on_Red’s comment*], simply attempted to put an “other” side.

* Be careful Red. I suspect you might well be rather fortunate that the Moderator saw your two responses to me on Sunday night before I did.

  It was clear very early on that the AstraZeneca vaccine had an unacceptable rate of blood clots, and so it was withdrawn from normal use (*) within a matter of weeks after being introduced.
  
  Note that the AstraZeneca vaccine was an old-school type vaccine, not an mRNA vaccine. (That’s why Australia initially focused on it, because it could be made in the CSL plant in Melbourne)
  
  (* The blood clots were mainly in women under the age of 40, so some countries kept the AstraZeneca vaccine available for the elderly, as a way to get more people vaccinated quickly).

They used an adeno virus that had been made less virulent (old school) as the vector but it had been modified by adding genetic material of the covid virus (totally new technology).   And you might want to learn more about the First Amendment.
  
  Firstly, Trump is not being forbidden from speaking … which is what the First Amendment is about. He is free to speak. Heck, he gets in front of cameras every day after Court, so if the Government is trying to restrict his speech they’re doing a shit job.
  
  But, secondly, you still face the consequences of your speech. It’s the old “Yell Fire in a crowded cinema” story. You’re free to say it, but you’ll bear the consequences. Likewise if you were to threaten to kill someone then you’re free to say that, but there are consequences.

Consuming fluoride is apparently good for your health, says the govt. What is curious is that literally no one else makes this claim. There’s only one commercial product that contains fluoride – toothpaste. On the tube it specifically says “do not consume, ring poison hotline if ingested”

Why do multi vitamin pills not contain fluoride? Why does NZ have one of the highest rates of digestive system cancers in the world? (Mouth, throat, stomach, colon cancer). If we are honest with ourselves, we already know the answer to these questions.

  Chris Luxon will be getting heaps of briefings on this issue. The issue is all about a balanced power grid.
  
  Obviously solar and wind only generate when the sun shines or the wind blows. New Zealand alternative energy is just about all wind. There would be very few days where New Zealand has no wind over the whole country. When wind generation is at full peak there is much less requirement for geothermal or hydro. So hydro has much more water storage than would otherwise be the case.
  
  Chris Luxon will have all sorts of power experts who give him and his office extensive information about the New Zealand power system. It is the sort of thing where Luxon will definetly know his stuff.

      That monitor indicates power generation and its source plus the theoretical capacity, but not the actual capacity for any given point in time.
      At 7.30 there was virtually no power being generated by wind or solar. I find it hard to believe all the wind has ground to a halt up and down the country

  Chuck, you do know there is such a thing as batteries right?
  
  A hydro dam is both a power generator (the turbines) and a battery (the water held behind the dam). Huntly is both a power generator (the Rankines) and a battery (the coal stored in the yard).
  
  The way that we’ve implemented solar and wind to date has basically been to just concentrate on the power generator bit (the wind turbines and PV panels). That’s been okay so far because the size of the “battery” in the hydro dams in particular has been so large we could get away with that.
  
  But as we get more and more wind & solar then that’s going to out-grow the “battery” factor in our power grid and we’re going to have to start thinking about building grid-scale battery storage (ie chemical batteries, like lithium ion batteries).
  
  We’ll probably also need to think about some exotic things like flywheel batteries too, to provide more black start and frequency management in the grid.
  
  Put simply … we’re in a technology transition that won’t be complete for another 25 years or so, so there may appear to be gaps but they’ll be filled over time.
