Tibet

Helen Clark has said she did raise the issue of Tibet with the Chinese Premier. Good.

If you want to send a message to your Government to pressure China to enter into a dialogue over Tibet, you can do so at this website, which I found through the BNI Blog.

And how about raising the issues of falun Gong, forced abortions as part of the one child policy, and democracy in China?

Tibet isn’t China’s (or Chaina’s) only human rights issue.

Don’t forget in China house churches are closed, Christians detained, mistreated and punished, while their properties are seized by the authorities. Helengrad would be happy that Christians are continuously monitored by security forces.

Without knowing what was said between the two of them, the raising of the subject, in itself, is meaningless.

I think Clark has lost any credibility now in trying to argue points with the Chinese. To have bargaining power, you have to at least look like you have some integrity.

It has the feeling to me of someone marrying a criminal and then the day after the wedding waking up and saying, “you know honey, I don’t really like those things you do; I wish you wouldn’t”. It doesn’t really quite ring true does it? “Tut, tut, Helen; just go back to sleep, darling”.

What a bunch of confused (I was going to say hypocrites but I settle for confused) people you are. When Achmed Zoui came to NZ as the sole surviving member of a democratically elected government that was denied power then hunted down with the help of the French government a large chunk of you wanted him sent back, to die I assume. No marching in Paris protesting about democracy denied there.

When Bush decides that he doesn’t like the way Iraq is run he invades and kill many civilians for nothing, not even cheap oil would you speak out if he destroys Iran?

Did any of you protest as the Kremlin crushed Chechnia? stop selling that butter, quick you had better get to south Canterbury as a Russian company is building a milk processing factory at the same time that the Russians are pressuring Georgia and Ukraine to submit to their will.

America ( and Russia) assassinates people without trial are you going to stop buying Jeeps?

I agree that as a government the communists suck but if you look closely they are not communist any more this is a new empire it is the form of government that the Chinese have had for 5000 years and it has worked with moderate success during that time.

What have we got? true democracy has only been in the west for a very short time and even when we call ourselves democratic we have used various means to keep the privileged at the top. Lets face it we didn’t invent Maori seats because we wanted them to be better represented

So we have a deal with china this is called being part of history. If you read history, people change, migrations bring in new cultures and old cultures fade populations mix and change.

to be honest and this may to you sound defeatist but if my country is to be taken over a trade deal is a more peaceful way. If you open your eyes this is a great opportunity and a privileged to stand on the edge of historical change.

The king is dead long live the king.

oh and as for Tibet do you agree with the treaty settlements that are going on here or not? and as for those on the “left” how could you possibly complain about a centralist government like the Chinese

Is this the same woman who SAID she wouldnt outlaw smacking?

But I’m sure she did discuss Tibet with the chinese leadership, eg

” I believe Tibet is very nice at this time of year”
“I believe they have some quite high mountains in Tibet. I like mountains”
“Will you be taking your holidays in Tibet this year Premier?”
” I like Tibet, but Peter will only let me buy Lotto tickets.”

Thanks for the invitation, but I don’t want to.

Personally after the disgraceful display in Lhasa it doesnt look like the Tibetan exiles command enough support within the autonomous region to justify entering into dialogue.

Comparing the pillaging of Lhasa with how the democracy movement in Burma
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007_Burmese_anti-government_protests
One photo caption: “Protesters in Yangon with a banner that reads non-violence: national movement in Burmese, in the background is Shwedagon Pagoda”

Dialogue is a two way process, the Chinese and pro One China Tibetans don’t have a partner for dialogue with sufficient internal support to justify negotiations at this point in time.

I wonder how the conversation went…?

“Love what you’re doing in Tibet, any suggestions how I can better crack down on dissent back in NZ? The EFB isn’t working quite as well as you thought it would, so I need some better ideas for stopping the evil capitalists from manipulating the masses with the truth”

FFS – will you all forget about bleating for Tibet.
Aside from the fact that Tibet has been a part of China (in agreement with the Tibetans) for most of the last hundreds of years, I dont recall similar bleating suppporting other separatist groups – such as for example maori separatists.

Where were you all when tama Iti called for Tuhoe independance?
Would you all be out there trying to steal the olympic flame in support of say Quebec independance ? Not bloody likely. (Mind you with all the drugs involved, one would have to be a bit of a dope to think the olympics were worth the trouble)

  11. Robert Black (423) Says:

The Western media about China really annoys me, any small negative thing they blast out there

The Chinese put their best Bruce Lees to protect not only the Olympic torch but also the athletes and famous people that will run with it

and the Western media savagely attacks them and China labelling them as thugs

as if another country wouldn’t do the same thing

Sebastion Coe, the British Olympic boss labelled them as “thugs” saying, “they nearly pushed me!”

    Jesus

it is ridiculous and sad that the anti-China population overseas laps this all up so eagerly, racistly and naively

please read up on some more objective history of Tibet

then compare that history to any of the English acquisitions, Spanish, Portuguese, around the world (including New Zealand).

    Free New Zealand!!

The whole thing is laughable but a big pity that a well planned, well thought out plan by a minority group of extremists may well destroy the Olympics.

For myself I was looking forward to a good Olympics:(
