Fiji Elections

July 17th, 2008 at 8:00 am by David Farrar

Back in March I blogged:

When I read that Foreign Ministers could not get an election timetable out of Fiji, but are hopeful there will be one next month, I am reminded of Charlie Brown trying to kick the football. Each time he goes for it, Commodore Lucy pulls it away!

This is still happening. There is no chance there will be elections by March 2009. In fact there is no chance of any free elections. Already the Commodore is talking of banning the former governing party, or members from it anyway.

Remind me again why NZ should be concerned? human rights? Sure, we shuffle those aside for the EFA. Economic responsibilities? What are those? We can’t sort out our own. Should we send in the military – America vs. Iraq style? Because the ideal of democractic elections is worth more than the idea of enforcing a war on a nation? Or that the ideal of democracy is worth more than an autonomous self directed people? What, and dispell the myth of a threat free pacific? Why? Because…because there are people having difficultly and wouldn’t it be nice if everyone got along? Been to South Auckland lately? Because fijian immigrants are a minority and Helen has unilaterally, stereotypically and without evidence decided that her minority government has the support of all minorities and they ALL agree with her and disagree with the coup? Ah right, sure. So why, why is it any of our business?

I don’t believe it needs an invasion a la the US in Iraq.

(1)An SAS squad drops in from a Hercules in the middle of the night.
    (2) BANG! One bullet in Bainimarama’s head. (And one each for any of his sufficiently vital henchmen too..)
    (3) The SAS squad swims out the next night to an Australian Submarine that is waiting to extract them.

Problem solved. No more Commodore, and no more Coup, because the rest of the military have had the bejesus scared out of them because SOMEONE f*cked them right up, and (hopefully) they decide it’s better to submit graciously to democracy…

RRM – Unfortunately your plan raises a number of issues in international law.

David – your (and NZ’s) concerns about the lack of confirmation of an election date for Fiji in March 2009 would be a bit more credible if the NZ Govt was able to confirm the date of our own election. I am still waiting for Bainimarama to ask the obvious: “So, Mr Peters, when are you holding your own election?”

You’re right Murray, and I was going to leave the detailed stuff up to ACTUAL strategic geniuses that we presumably keep in a bunker somewhere, who might (unlike myself) actually know what some of those acronyms actually mean ;-)

but you can see the basic thrust of my gist of where I’m going with this though, can’t you:

    **SHOOT BAINIMARAMA!***

Here’s a series of questions that John Key might to ask Winston Peters in Parliament:

“Can you confirm that you have a major investment in a Suva Hotel?”

“Can you confirm that Frank Bainimarama and a number of other senior members of the RFMF also have major investments in the hotel?”

“Can you confirm that, notwithstanding your bombast about democracy in Fiji, you speak to Bainimarama by telephone at least twice a week to ensure that the hotel – and thereby your investment – remains safe?”

And yes, this one has legs.
