The Empire Strikes Back

August 29th, 2008 at 12:21 pm by David Farrar

I have heard today from a media source that Labour is in full smear mode against Owen Glenn. He is being described as a Walter Mitty type fantasist. This is incredible. Does this mean Clark will not suspend Peters? Surely not? I hear they may not even meet today now.

Normally I would be inclined to not believe they could be so stupid, but at the Senate Party last night (a great bash – well done Senate) I was also told there by another media source that a Labour Minister had been bad mouthing Glenn – not just this week but for the last six weeks or so. And when I say bad mouthing, I mean talking about his state of mind.

Do they really think we will believe that Owen Glenn donated $100,000 to Winston’s legal bills, and that he never discussed it with Winston, despite writing to the Privileges Committee saying he had?

It is possible that Glenn is just having a laugh with NZ politics. The circa half a bill he has played with has had various political parties jumping through hoops and doing all sorts of entertaining stuff. I dount he could have hired a group of actors for that amount of money to put on such a good performanace for him. His actions have dominated our media time and time again.

So… If he is having a laugh then labour need to stop pretending he’s lost it and haul his ass into court for ‘Treason, Sedition or something… Bet they don’t, rather they just play out their reflexive response….

They can’t be that stupid … surely?!? All Glenn has to do is drop some evidence of ‘cash for consulship’ into the laps of the baying media and we’d be officially mocked as ‘République de bananes’.

I agree with burt – The uber-wealthy crave what no one else can have.. and in this instance Glenn is having more fun at the expense of the politically powerful than any of us could dare to dream of!

Labour cannot win an election right now, they trail in polling by 13 – 16%. Until the polling changes Winston Peters is a vital and therefore “trustworthy” member of the government.

Of course they’re that stupid. Its Helen Clarks playbook. Its how she got to the top of the party, how she got into office and how she stayed in office. Helen the chief “stratagist” so its her call.

Its her survival mechanism and not entirely unlike why women stay with husbands how beat them. Its all they know.

Beinga rational tactic has nothing to do with it.

Can Clark stop Glen appearing before the PC If she calls an election before next Thursday does the PC and all other Committees then go into recess

Any constitutional lawyers out there know this

If Glen gives evidence then I expect he will drop both Liugi and Helen into it up to their eyeballs he will have dates names places corroborating evidence and she knows this I expect to see her and Mikey W appear all over the evidence.

Own Glenn does have serious problems of his own- his naïve and credulous nature; after all he was gullible enough to give monies to Labour and NZ First and expect them to behave honourably.

Labour’s smear-Glenn strategy is totally irrelevant. Even if the Glenn donation allegations are totally untrue, they are the least serious of the allegations against Peters and they are not the issues being investigated by the SFO. The issues are whether Peters committed fraud with the Jones and Vela donations, whether he blackmailed Peter Siminovich over the scampi issue, and whether he has lied in Parliament about paying personally for the winebox legal fees.

So smear, smear, smear Labour. Smear, smear smear your biggest funder, who you honoured in the New Year’s Honours. Show your true colours as downright scum.

But even if your smear campaign against Glenn works – or even if it is true – that cannot justify allowing the Foreign Minister to remain in office when he is being investigated by the SFO on entirely unrelated matters.

I wish she would postpone the meeting but I doubt she has lost that much of her political nous. Short of pulling orphans from a burning building I doubt anyone would buy an excuse for a postponement. It already looks like she is not interested in uncovering the truth in order to remain in power and that would just confirm suspicions.

I think this will cripple Labour in the polls if they drag it out. The swinging voter is sick of the politics of the situation, of the weasel words, of the lame excuses and of the name calling. If Labour continue down this path they will have lost them. Especially with that nice man Mr Key talking about principle and making a stand against these old tired politicians.

If Clark doesn’t sack him today, it must mean Peters is prepared to implicate Williams and Clark further

Why the surprise? They are creatures of habit and as such they will use the same tactics over and over. It has always worked in the past so there is no reason to believe it won’t work in the future. And if by some remote chance it doesn’t work they will find another scapegoat.
Expecting common sense from a politician is like standing in front of a charging bull and saying ” I’m wearing pink and my counsellor said it is a soothing colour”

“History ever repeats”, to paraphrase Split Enz. It seems that once a party has been in power for an extended length of time they fall on the sword of their own hypocrisy. Helen Clark vowed to get rid of “sleaze” yet she has allowed herself to get caught up to her neck in it. She’s got away with it for so long now that it’s hardly surprising she thinks the electorate will swallow this fairy-tale. After all, they fell for all the others.

I ‘m with you GD – the longer they leave it the more blood is lost. I wonder if Helen actually cares what the right thing to do is – they think they are saving the planet with the ETS and that seems to be their horizon and reason for being. It is the ultimate in cynicism but it is Helen and Labour all over. They all belong in jail.

More to the point, why do stupid, stupid, stupid voters continue to TRUST these people? Why might as much as 30% of Kiwi voters STILL support the Heleban? And why might 5% STILL support Luigi?

I am interested in Helen’s assertion that

I have never known Winston to lie to me…

But 6 months ago she received conflicting evidence from her chief donor to the contrary

So if Helen believes Winston has never lied to her then she must think Owen Glenn is lying.

    Which is it?

And if you asked the NZ public – who would they believe?

And what does that say about her lack of judgement and leadership ability

Owen Glenn is confused alright. According to the email of 21st Feb he was supposed to “stick to the line”.

“Note that Winston says you have never made a donation to NZ First, so at all costs you must stick to that line” – so i think what Cullen is getting at is that if Owen Glenn had shut up, none of this would have ever made it into the public arena and they all would have got off scot-free.

I think he was confused because he’s not a politician and he has no idea about how the depraved manner in which they operate.

I used to wonder why Hulun and the Labour caucus bristled and got so upset when they were labelled “corrupt” by the National Party in recent years – well we need wonder no longer.

The “corrupt” label was the perfect description of their tawdry operation, and it obviously hit a nerve with the Labour scum because they knew that it summed them up so succinctly and perfectly. It was the one defining characteristic that they were terrified the sheeple would learn about them – the truth.
