A NZ political quiz

October 29th, 2008 at 8:25 am by David Farrar

Pundit have put together a US-style political quiz for NZ. Rate what issues are important to you and then answer some questions, and it tells you what party you are closest to.

  1. 78% similar to ACT
  2. 75% to National
  3. 65% to United Future
  4. 55% to NZ First
  5. 45% to Progressive
  6. 44% to Labour
  7. 38% to Greens

It’s a nice wee quiz – well done to Pundit.

Well that’s a steaming pile of crap – it says I’m a United Future supporter. I feel unclean.

Haha, at least i know i’m a labout supporter (although my position on lower company taxes and more free trade was a bit more extreme than the party, i.e. i’m for them)

  3. CraigM (681) Says:

    That was a surprise. I scored :

    68% ACT
    68% NZF
    65% National

are they really that similar? shit. What the hell was Peters doing propping up a labour Government. Talk about selling out for the baubles of office. Tosser.

If scores are that close, then it must prove we are voting for personalities rather than policies. Which I guess we always knew anyway.

No real surprises there for me.

I’ve tried it four times and got four different answers – always National first, Act 1st = or second but to my horror NZ First has been third a couple of times. But I take comfort in the thought disagree so strongly with the areas in which we idffer it more than cancels out anything we have in common :)

A small change in the rankings at the start has quite a significant impact on the results.

    64% Act

Which is completely in line with my thinking.

Would much rather do away with electorate seats
have 1 vote for Major Party
have 1 vote for Minor Party
The I could vote for Rodney, my electorate vote
    is wasted in Mana

As for Winston, he is a political bi-sexual, he will swing either way
depending on who will give him the best buck for his bang
Which is why he sits at the moment with Labour
even though his policies are more to the right

  11. Tim Watkin(1) Says:

    Morning all,

I’m one of the crew behind Pundit. Thanks for coming and trying the quiz. It’s fascinating to see people stagger back in horror when they get beyond the hype, hairstyles and scandals and realise they have more in common with some politicians than they thought! We reckon it’s worthwhile shaking up some assumptions and focusing people on policies rather than politics. Good for the minor parties especially, as they struggle to get their policy platforms heard.
But as some of you have found, your choice of issues and the weight you give them can lead to different results. That’s just because the more weight you give to an issue, the more questions you get on that topic. So you will get different questions, which will lead to different results.
Anyway, keep enjoying. And to paraphrase, come for the quiz, stay for the commentary…

How are NZ Firsts policies more to the right? Are you calling the right racist, corrupt, protectionist, elitist, frauds? (Rhetorical question for all you lefty sycophants who just creamed your jeans).

Would be nice if it included a measure of the credibility of each party. It lists their policy announcements as confirmation of their position and we all know that that’s a bunch of arse. For example “Labour are committed to unrestricted free trade and firming up relationship with the US blah blah blah”. They’re only interested in these things if certain other conditions are met. It’s those other conditions that one may take issue with. We also know that the heleban feels like they have a vast moral superiority to americans.

Sorry Sir Roger, I only got 89% similarity to ACT. I’ll make up for it by giving you 100% of my vote.

Well the more interesting thing is the deeper analysis… I am one of those people who either complete agrees with something or completely opposes and that is evidenced through this:

    Crime and Punishment 0%
    Economy and Taxes 100%
    Education 50%
    Employment 100%
    Environment and Energy 88%
    Family and Morals 38%
    Foreign Policy and Trade 100%
    Government and Leadership 88%
    Health Care 75%
    Race Relations and Immigration 88%
    Welfare and Superannuation 75%

I’ve already cast an advance vote and even though i polled very similarly to DPF i gave my party vote to the one party that can ensure that Labour don’t get back in. I want a change of government first, i’ll deal with the finer points in three years time.

    6. Progressive 51%
    7. Green 31%

However I am disappointed that the poll doesn’t include questions on abortion, euthansia, drug abuse, so called “hate speech”, pornography, gratuitious violence on TV/movies/DVD, family issues (the Families Commission has Marxists in it, so they are a waste morally and financially). It is nice that at the time of writing this comment my lowest score is for the resident Communists :)

I think it needs more development.

Winston Peters – Correct me if I am wrong but the Greens voted for the censure? And have stated that they do not support him?

Ban List – I would support some of the items on the list, maybe a third max. Hence my comment about being split look at my moral results in comparison to them for instance.

EFA – While far from perfect it is the first step towards transparency in the election process.

Economic Recovery – That issue is bigger then just NZ and yes we can take some steps towards it but to be honest the United States got us into this mess and they need to get us out of it….

And I know again I have just disagreed with the majority of people on this blog.

Oh, and I should of added that the quiz needs more questions. Normally just one or two questions determine your view on something. The political compass on the other hand is much more indepth.

EFA – While far from perfect it is the first step towards transparency in the election process. That’s debatable. There are too many loopholes (particularly concerning donations). It is too draconian (especially when it is meant to be aiming to improve the democratic process), too long, too inclusive, and too heavily favours incumbents.

Economic Recovery – That issue is bigger then just NZ and yes we can take some steps towards it but to be honest the United States got us into this mess and they need to get us out of it…. The US did not cause us to be facing 10 years of deficits. The US are not responsible for setting NZ govt budgets or taxation levels. The Greens do not know how to generate wealth — only how to interfere in the affairs of those who do, and thus reducing their ability to do so.

the quiz needs more questions. Agreed.

One question for you — please excuse my ignorance here: since The Greens regard energy consumption and technological innovation (and even mankind) as a blot on the planet, then surely to be consistent with such philosophy a Green supporter should live like an Amish? Hehe.

I am actually a Computer Science Honours student and probably use more then my fair share of Carbon and Energy Consumption. Having said that when do you ever get a political party that you agree with 100%. Heck even John Key and Maurice Williamson can’t decide if they support tolls or not.

My point was, and I’m assuming the point of the quiz is to show which party you are most in agreement with or similar to. That does not mean you are a green party communist close as some people would suggest that you are. (not to mention the Green party probably doesn’t support cloning).

I’m assuming that the questionnaire uses the espoused policy positions of the parties, as opposed to their actual performance, to calculate compatibility. Indeed if NZF had stuck to its Fundamental Principles I’d still be there (and a lot of others wouldn’t).

One other small criticism of the quiz… giving a high rating to “crime and punishment” doesn’t necessarily indicate I’d be welcome at a Sensible Sentencing Trust meeting – quite the opposite. So how does it differentiate between someone who see this as a priority because they’d like to build a big wall and a few guard towers round the South Island to accommodate the vast number of people they’d like to lock up versus someone who sees it as a priority for quite different reasons? Yes, there are questions on the topic in Part 2 but, as others have commented above, they don’t seem sufficient in number to be able to gain a clear picture.
