Final secret tape due today or tomorrow

November 4th, 2008 at 8:25 am by David Farrar

Having failed with the neutron bomb, I expect the final secret tape recording to be released to the media today or tomorrow. The rumour is it is of John Key. The last one was merely Bill English saying it is good to win elections, so not sure whether or not it will be in that vein or not.

It is worth remembering the context of these tape recordings. A Keystone Kop infiltrated a social cocktail function and lied to a number of MPs pretending to be a Young National. He advocated policy positions he did not believe in, trying to get the MPs to agree with him through sympathy so it would look like some sinister secret agenda.

MPs get pestered non stop at these social functions by party activists on various issues, and of course you tend to look for the merit of someone’s proposal rather than tell a party member and volunteer that their idea is fucking stupid.

My suggestion, for what it is worth, is that the media should demand the full tape recording from Mr Keystone Kop. Let people hear exactly the words he used to solicit a response, so any comments from the MP can be heard in context. Also to make sure that the full response from the MP is included, not just an extract that leaves out a vital part.

DPF is right, that IS what the media should do if they had a shred of honesty and objectivity.

The Nats need a few lessons from Lord Ashcroft on how to teach the media a lesson. You don’t HAVE to put up with their biases and their slimy little partisan activities and their outright frame-ups (like what they did to Don Brash). Trouble is, DPF and Murray McCully and all the rest of you is, if you let them get away with it once, and twice, and thrice…….if you ley them get away with it with Don Brash, you are asking to have them get away with it with your NEXT leader too, and the one after, and the one after. Somewhere along the line, you are going to have to realise that you’ve got nothing to lose by taking these bastards on head on in court and getting substantial damages awarded and getting guilty journos sacked and even jailed. Just ask Lord Ashcroft, if he didn’t tell you when he was out here recently.

There is one forgotten victim in this new “secret recordings” phenomenon in NZ politics.

The possibility of a “secret tapping” being “secretly taped” and then released to the media will surely be the death knell for cottaging by a spouse of a major NZ political figure. How will he be able to trust his new-found chum with this possibility looming…will performance anxiety spoil the whole “romantic” interlude?

Then again, the men’s rest rooms at LAX, Hagley Park etc will become safe again for non-cottaging users…which goes to prove that every cloud has a silver lining.

    “Phil,

How would a political party go about not letting the media get away with it?”

Ryan, I said that they need a few lessons from Lord Ashcroft. I suggest you read Lord Ashcroft’s book, “Dirty Politics, Dirty Times” to see what I mean.

It requires deep pockets like Lord Ashcroft has, and teams of high powered lawyers, and expensive lawsuits, taken against demostrably dirty reporting. The status quo involves a lot of kow-towing to the media in the hope that they might not treat you so dirty forever. That is a forlorn hope where “conservatives” are concerned.

The Ashcroft approach has resulted in a lot more careful handling of the Tories in England by the media there, and is probably the main factor in the Tories getting back in the political race of late, after years of some of the best leadership material England could have had (William Hague, Michael Howard, Iain Duncan Smith) getting hounded into oblivion over trifles and non-issues, while Labour got a free pass on much worse stuff. Does that sound like a familiar situation by any chance?

Just heard the tape. What a have. English says that there has to be a balance between being moralistic on the one hand and over zealous like Bush on the other. Eminently sensisble. Sometimes someone may have to pull the trigger. English did not say, as Clark maintains, that National would pull any triggers. Clark knew all about it. Just another scaremongering bodybag comment with no substance and even less integrity.

What a joke. If my memory serves me correctly – didn’t Helen Clark say Iraq would not have happenned if Al Gore was elected.

    Yup, totally pathetic.

Clark crawled into the gutter again by lying about knowing anything about the source, and by trying to claim it proves that National would have taken us into Iraq and that National is “militaristic”.

TV3 was clearly a little uncomfortable about airing it all and tried to play it up as more important than it was, as well as throwing a patsy question to Duncan Garner so he justify doing so, which made him look like a pompous drop kick. Oh wait, he is a pompous drop kick.

The tape will have nil negative effect on National, and I suspect that most people who are not Labourite cultists and Greenies will just yawn or feel even more turned off by Labour’s sleaze trawling.

I gotta be fair to Dunk, he looked a bit sheepish having to front such a feeble story.

“As if English would say such things about Key in a public hall in front of a range of unknown people when the guy is leading every poll.

To be fair to English, it strikes me as being almost incredible that he would be saying these things with Key probably standing only metres away from him and a whole lot of people who would be likely to report such negativity back to Key.

If indeed this is a trap that has been sprung on Labour it would be the greatest ropey-dope since Ali’s.

    Fingers crossed.”

Now THAT is an idea, a reverse sting on Labour. (Someone posing as a member of the EB, for example). What a pity it’s too late to set one up.

Garner tried to play up that he mentions Obama along with the European Union as being too “moralistic” on defense and foreign affairs, and then claimed that this might damage our relations with the US!!!

NZ is a lovely place, but sometimes Kiwis take themselves way too seriously and have a massively over-inflated sense of their importance on the world stage.

Obama will never hear of this, and even if he did would not give it a nano second of concern.

    Heh, I was thinking Bill-English-can’t-keep-his-fucking-trap-shut-gate.

I would like to withdraw that flippant remark and apologise to all members of the VRWC for being so easily excited by a desperate attempt by labour to dig up something, anything, on National.

The fact that they see these very middle of the road statements by English as being something that would turn the tide against National shows how far out of touch they are with normal NZers.

I will sleep well tonight, role on Saturday!
