Media thank Winston Add this story to Scoopit!.

The print Qantas Awards were last night.

Winston helped with two of the awards. The Weekend Herald won Newspaper of the Year, partly on Audrey Young’s revelation of email evidence that Winston Peters’ interests did receive funding from Owen Glenn.

Also the Dom Post reports:

Phil Kitchin was again named senior news reporter of the year at last night’s ceremony in Wellington. He also won best politics story for his investigation into the NZ First funding saga.

We owe Audrey and Phil our thanks.

    “well done all”

    Sorry can’t agree Mr. Farrar.

A contrived and incestuous farce. Last gasp of a politically corrupt and dying industry.

    John Armstrong- best political columnist????

    Pffft.. enough said.

  2. Redbaiter (13,197) Says:

Redbaiter Award for downplaying and avoiding Helen Klark’s involvement in the Peters/ Glenn scandal-

Almost every one of the useless grovelling politically partisan suckers.

Where’s the microscope they applied to Don Brash?

Journalist- As an occupation, has it risen above the status of second hand car salesman over the last few decades? If so, its an event that is grossly unfair to used car salesmen.

    Blogs are the evidence.

    “John Armstrong- best political columnist????”

Exactly. Might as well have had Tapu Misa.

    :)

I think a tie between her and Matt McCarten for second.

Agree, She’s so damn right on the blogging.

Qantas Awards- What a shallow empty farce.

  7. Alan Wilkinson (973) Says:

I’m very pleased Chris Barton won. He was an excellent technology journalist and has gone on to be a fine, in-depth, intelligent and well-researched general writer who doesn’t plaster either a personal agenda or crude sensationalism over his stories.

  8. Alan Wilkinson (973) Says:

That Fran O’Sullivan won the Business Columnist category frankly shows the abysmal state of business journalism in our MSM.

  9. adamsmith1922 (690) Says:

Personally I would vote for Cactus for her piece on the NZX

  10. MT_Tinman (1,666) Says:

I had a rather bemused look through the list of awards.

Do they draw lots for “winners” or is there a list where you must await your turn before being named?

  11. Zulu (19) Says:

Winston …. Winston … the name seems familiar. Was he on the last Dancing with the Stars series or something???

  12. stephen (4,058) Says:

“Winston helped with two of the awards” – for a second it looked like they got him to help hand them out.

  13. Russell Brown (389) Says:

I suppose I shouldn’t comment specifically, but I think there will be a few people in the business shaking their heads about some of the awards. More than most years.

OTOH, Chris Barton’s high award is richly deserved.

  14. Rex Widerstrom (4,529) Says:

Certainly Audrey Young and Phil Kitchin deserve recognition for their respective performances during the whole Peters saga as well as their general excellence as journalists. As does Chris Barton, for different reasons.

While there’s a lot of crap in our newspapers, much of it is due to the quality of columnists they insist on employing and much of the rest of it is due to sensationalist and often biased editorial policies, combined with short-sighted cost-cutting by proprietors.

Given all that, it’s a miracle that writing like Audrey’s and Phil’s (and many others, working away in the provinces) ever sees that light of day. That it does is testament not just to their skill, but to their integrity and tenacity.

  15. Trevor Mallard (237) Says:

DPF much as it hurts to partially agree with Kate your blog has been outstanding over the last year. I mainly disagree with you but you certainly give the issues a run.

  16. dave (918) Says:

the best blog finalists are a joke. No disrespect to the winner or the finalists, but it was a bit like Big News winning against Public Address and Kiwiblog (with the latter not even being nominated.) The winner only won because she had Stuff backing after winning blog idol. This had nothing to do with readership, content, or even pretty pictures, (which DPF doesnt have).

We all know who the best blogs are. They are the ones that get a good readership. And none of them are associated with the MSM apart from their journos reading them to get some of the stories that get them nominated for awards.

  17. RainbowGlobalWarming (295) Says:

    Media awards a farce?

    Labour cheated?

    Winston liked a drink?

Waterfront stadium was never a serious proposition?
