French, don’t you just love them!

Watch the last 5 minutes of the Boks v Lions.

Simply a bad call, and frankly Partisan

As we saw in the World Cup when the French fans threw all their support behind SA for the Final.

    No surprises there then!

    Ah, the English summer.

Muggy, warm and now a thunderstorm with hail.

Although quite frankly what do expect during Wimbledon week.

Glad I just spent two weeks in Spain and came back to this, doh!

Mental note, look at more weeks away before the end of the European summer (aka English warm and dull season).

Yuk yuk, Paul Ackfords in The Telegraph somehow scores the Lions player performance higher than the Jappies even though they LOST.

    British and Irish Lions:

Rob Kearney: Scored a try, caught all the bombs that came his way and punted beautifully. Almost perfect. 9
Tommy Bowe: Kept his width to fix Steyn for Kearney to score Lions first try. Not many chances to shine himself. 6

Brian O’Driscoll: Well up for it. Had an early tussle with Matfield and played like a flanker forcing turnovers. Eventually injured. 8

Jamie Roberts: Not as many line breaks but still carried bodies over the advantage line. Like O’Driscoll, battered at end. 8

Luke Fitzgerald: Victim of disgraceful eye gouge by Burger. Always threatening and did well to thwart Pietersen in first half. 7

Stephen Jones: Potted a snappy drop goal to reward Lions pressure and squeezed over a penalty which nearly earned Lions the draw. 6

Mike Phillips: Important runs through the middle of the rucks and mauls to keep Bok defence honest. Pass not that slick. 7

Gethin Jenkins: Failed to offload when Lions looked certain to score. Part of a massive scrummaging effort. Clashed heads with Habana. 6

Matthew Rees: Just about held his lineout throwing together. Big influence in scrum and loose play. 7

Adam Jones: Got one over on the beast which was a big psychological lift for Lions. Another Lion who was bashed up. 7

Simon Shaw: Fabulous match. Annoyed Botha, smashed rucks and carried ball into heart of Bok defence. At 35, he even kept going to the end. 8

Paul O’Connell: Didn’t carry ball that well but prominent in early lineouts and forced turnovers late on. Leadership much improved too. 7

Tom Croft: Not as conspicuous as first Test but still keen to mix it with the big boys. Has had a good tour. 6

David Wallace: Much better. Made a nuisance of himself at the breakdown and outplayed Burger. 7

Jamie Heaslip: More visible. A couple of punching runs in the first half were excellent. Faded slightly late on. 6

Replacements: O’Gara gave away the final penalty which cost Lions the match but the Lions were out on their feet at that stage. Andrew Sheridan pick of replacements. Actually got cross. 7

    ———————————————————————————————————–

    South Africa:

Frans Steyn: Another mixed bag from a multi-talented player but when he’s good he is very good, witness that superb penalty on half-time. Looks like a world class centre playing full-back. 7

JP Pietersen: Looked much livelier than last week and showed real gas to take his first half try. Much more involved and always needed watching by the Lions hard pressed defence. 7

Adi Jacobs: Still doesn’t look a world beater but a much tidier performance than last week. Midfield defence on Brian O’Driscoll and Jamie Roberts was much tighter. 6

Jean de Villiers: Was just beginning to show his class when departed injured. Worked hard when required to repulse the Lions midfield. 6

Bryan Habana: Much more like it after a quiet weekend in Durban. Devastating runner who was looking for work from the off and took his try like the thoroughbred he is. 8

Ruan Pienaar: Has great qualities but not convincing and looked vulnerable when the Lions cranked up the pressure inthe first half. 6

Fourie du Preez: Has found the excellent Mike Phillips a real handful in this series and has not been at his world class best. Some nice touches to keep the Boks ticking over but nothing sensational. 6

Tendai Mtawarira: A very tough day at the office after Durban’s heroics and he wouldn’t have been devastated when injuries to Adam Jones and Gethin Jenkins resulted in uncontested scrums. 5

Bismark du Plessis: Struggled like the beast and was making little impact in the scrum although his line-out throwing remained consistent and underpinned the Boks line-out excellence. 5

John Smit (capt): HIs leadership was as good as ever but nowhere near as effective at scrum-time and gave a few penalties away. By his own standards a middling game. 6

Bakkies Botha: Always a considerable line-out presence and ferocious in the contact area. Decided to bait Andew Sheridan and to his surprise got as good as he gave. 7

Victor Matfield: Supreme in the line-out, as ever, and a more than useful operator in the loose but would have wanted to produce something bigger and better in front of his own Blue Bulls fans. 7

Schalk Burger: Should have been sent off for gouging after 41 seconds. The referee has no discretion in the matter, it has to be red. Yellow was totally the wrong call. Burger faces a long ban, Berdos has a ton of explaining to do if he is to get another big game anytime soon. 0

Juan Smith: Has had to play amuch tighter game than he is used to. Never lets the Boks down but not as influential as he would have hoped. 6

Pierre Spies: Has not lived up to the hype. Another quiet game devodi of his athletic 50 yard dashes. Put one important tackle in on BOD in the first half but did little else of significance. 5

Replacements: The bench copped all the flak last week but they all played a magnificent hand this week, not least the extremely talented Jaque Fourie, who did brilliantly to take his try even if 20,000 Lions fans will tell you his torso was on the touchline, and Morne Steyn with his magnifcent 53m match winning kick. 10

Interesting comment from Stephen Franks concerning the effect of current defamation laws on freedom of speech. He links to Nicky Hager’s brush with defamation laws after commenting on Crosby Textor in the run up to the last election. Now, I have very little time for Nicky, but the the incident is a matter of grave concern to us all. Politicians have been loathe to ‘take on’ defamation laws probably because it has suited their own ends over the years and probably because of the lobbying power of the legal profession. Hopefully Nick Smith’s brush with defamation law will provide some impetus for reform (I have no idea how the matter has progressed since an ‘update’ prior to the last election).

Arising from this I have a very blunt message for National, its incoming President (whoever that be) and John Key. Engaging the services of that firm for the next election will probably lose more votes through voter disgust than it will gain through its strategy advice.

I wonder how many Kiwiblog readers remember this classic March 2006 post from DPF:

No this isn’t a joke. If you are able to write why you would like to visit Palmerston North in less than 20 words, then you may win a free trip to Palmerston North.

God if winning a weekend in Palmerston North is the first prize, then the second prize must be winning a week there and third prize winning a month! At that point I would suggest your friends apply for a write of habeas corpus to demand you be returned.

And oh look at this list of their top five things you can do as a tourist:

    * Jetboating along the Manawatu River.
    * Strolling through world-class rose gardens.
    * Driving a circuit of the Manfeild racetrack.
    * Listening to top academics at Massey University.
    * Not yet decided

Oh my God. They can’t even come up with a No 5 and their No 4 is listening to an academic talk!!! Oh yes this will bring the masses in.

Well, it’s taken a couple of years, but they’ve finally finished the list :)

peterwn, it is a problem, not just here, but worse in UK, and that horrid ruling will, no doubt, one day find home in NZ as well.

A judge has now decided that an honest person cannot call a fraud a fraud.

Dr Simon Singh allegedly libelled the British Chiropractic Association (BCA) in an article claiming the association is the respectable face of the chiropractic profession and yet it happily promotes “bogus” therapies. The BCA demanded an apology and a retraction, and in its libel action won a preliminary court ruling against Dr Singh last month. In it, Mr Justice Eady ruled that Dr Singh’s use of the word “bogus” meant he was accusing the BCA of being dishonest and backing treatments it knew did not work. He refutes this, saying that “alternative therapists who offer treatments unsupported by reasonable evidence are deluded rather than deliberately dishonest”.

Phil, I’d imagine most solo parents on the DPB are eligible for a housing corp rental subsidy as well? So does the 15k include or exclude that?

Secondly, as Patrick alludes to mate, in your case, you’ve made it a lifestyle choice. Ever since you’ve been blogging, for most of that time until very recently, the job market has been strong, yet you’ve never indicated you’ve made even the slightest effort to get a job. As far as we all know, you’ve never even attempted what Paula Bennett did and used the subsidised study grants that were then available to upskill yourself.

    A puzzlement.
Most of the people moving into the countryside are keen gardeners, and many would be “organic” gardeners of one kind or another.
So I would have thought they would be a Green Party constituency.
However, Whangarei has just notified its plan change 92 which is a plan prepared by Beca Planning which commits the whole of Whangarei to Smart Growth.
As is usual with this destructive planning fad the plan claims that because there is considerable productive land around the city (actually I presume they mean fertile land around the city) this must be protected from urban sprawl and the city must be subject to intensification.
So farm land must be protected from gardeners!
The Green Party also opposes industrial agriculture as unsustainable.
So where does the Green party stand on this?
The party also stands for social justice. The sale of seeds has increased 20% since the recession started to bite and these are vegetable seeds. So clearly people are turning to gardening to feed themselves.
Also the advent of farmers’ markets all around Northland means that many of these gardens will supply “buy local” markets, which are also in favour with the Greens.
This of course confirms my argument that whatever Smart Growth may be it is certainly not a Green Policy.
Any comment from any Greens watching the blog – or anyone else for that matter?
I am preparing submissions against this dreadful policy, but it would be nice to have a few allies.

Yes, I am aware of the British Chiropractic Association (BCA) v Singh case and it beggars belief. The Chiropractors in NZ are also taking a pot at the NZ Medical Association after the latter criticised some chiropractors using the title Dr (I think). AFAIK the matter is stalemated with the chiropractors demanding that the NZ Medical Journal retract and pay costs and the latter basically telling the chiropractors where to stick it.

There is another side to the general issue – I am thinking of the difficulties facing Cafe Cezanne in Ponsonby which is on the brink of collapse following a claim that they sold buggy food when due to negligence samples were mixed up. The cafe would be morally justified in taking legal action against TV3 but this may not be a practical option if TV3 digs its toes in.

I just wish that people like Tamihere would stop falling for the propaganda and use homosexual instead of gay.

Billy, I don’t know if it’s true but I heard years ago that it came out of San Francisco in the 60’s and stands for “good as you.”

    Never.

Quite sad really for it offers a small insight into the angst people must go through as they “come out.”

And more special pleading from homosexuals.

AUSTRALIA’S national depression body has abandoned the gay community and ignored its high rates of suicide, self-harm and mental illness, lobby groups claim.

    http://www.theage.com.au/national/gays-ignored-by-beyondblue-20090627-d0lf.html

There are plenty of depresses hetrosexuals needing help, so it is good that this body will not permit its funding to be diverted to homosexual causes.

How can homosexuals be depressed if they’re gay? Or is it a lie that homosexuals are gay?

And non radical Muslim countries too. I had the privilege of serving some time with the Malaysian military and still have contacts there including one very senior Muslim Army officer. Not too long ago the NZDF is their wisdom appointed a female as our Defence Liaison Officer in KL. His simple message to me was ‘does your country so not understand the norms of the Malaysian military (dominated by ethnic Muslim Malays) that you set out to deliberately undermine your standing with us’.

    So true, so sad.

It is about time the government got tough with these frauds, charlatans and shysters.

Chriropracters, homeopaths, reiki monsters, ju ju men, witch doctors, herbalists, accupuncturists and their hangers on have no place in a modern society.

Carlin, however, choose to focus much attention on one paper that had already been widely misinterpreted in the blogosphere, namely the Van de Wal et al 2008 Science paper on Greenland ice melt. In a truly bizarre twist, the analysis in Section 1.5 is lifted word-for-word from WorldClimateReport.com (November 12, 2008)!

Changing the law back will do what to protect kids? The current law is imperfect as most are, but the old version is slightly more imperfect. Most laws are already a careful selection of words which lawyers try and work around to get their clients off charges.

A hug illegal? It already could be – if I hug my wife it is s show of love, if I hug my ex-wife I could be in trouble if she chose.
