A Maori academic says the widespread support among women, young people and those from non-Pakeha ethnic groups for compulsory Maori in schools should be heeded.
Rawiri Taonui, the head of Maori and indigenous studies at Canterbury University, says the Research New Zealand poll showing 38 percent overall support for reo lessons was a valuable contribution to the debate.
He says older Pakeha males may struggle with the idea, but other groups are changing.
“Seventy percent of Pasifika people believe that Maori language should be a compulsory subject in our schooling system and that’s more than double the number of Pakeha in favour of that,” Mr Taonui says.
He says 20 years ago there was minimal support for compulsory reo in schools, but initiatives like Maori Language Week have changed perceptions.
One thing that you have to credit the Aussies with … their patience. In NZ, a string of defeats such as the Wallabies have suffered would result in a coach’s head on a platter after ritual media disembowelling. Neither the SMH, nor the Courier mail seem to have any criticism of Deans, and they put the blame right where it belongs … the guys who took to the field.
Brian – the reason why there is no ritual disembowelment of Robbie Deans is because nobody cares about Rugby Union in Australia. They care about AFL in most of the country and about Rugby League in Queensland and NSW.
When the Wallabies win against New Zealand it’s nice to know that they can beat little brother at his game. When they lose, they switch channels and it’s not even on the news. Bit like Soccer in NZ really.
Gazzmaniac, yes I know the relative importance of union in Australia which was why I looked to those two papers … no point in even looking in the Age for any comment. However, there are vociferous rugby commentators in Sydney and Brisbane, and while they have plenty to say (“Wasteful Wallabies” and “High Veldt Hoodoo” and “Wallabies Blow Big Lead”) they really do not seem to regard the coach as the target of their scorn.
Here, a single loss by the ABs tends to stir up the “fire Henry” brigade.
Arnie takes on the biggest monster he’s ever challenged: the unionised state sector parasites
“Few Californians in the private sector have $1 million in savings, but that’s effectively the retirement account they guarantee to public employees who opt to retire at age 55 and are entitled to a monthly, inflation-protected check of $3,000 for the rest of their lives.”
Brian – the reason why the “fire Henry” brigage come out every time there is a loss is that IMHO they never should have hired him to start with. John Mitchell was the best performing coach of the All Blacks in the modern era, and they ditched him for a school teacher.
UNITED NATIONS – An obscure U.N. board that oversees a $2.7 billion market intended to cut heat-trapping gases has agreed to take steps that could lead to it eventually reining in what European and U.S. environmentalists are calling a huge scam.
The chemical makers are paid as much as $100,000 or more for every ton they destroy of a potent greenhouse gas, HFC-23. The price for destroying it is based on its being 11,700 times more powerful as a climate-warming gas than carbon dioxide.
is Chris Carter getting back to good health .. does anyone know?? I last saw him on telly going to the gym for a yoga class and I heard he turned down a trip overseas??
I can imagine him doing yoga but not turning down a trip overseas .. mind you, I assume he would have had to pay for this one, or at least use up some air points.
after two particles are linked together through quantum entanglement, any change in the state of one particle immediately alters the other, even from kilometers away.
Get linked to a woman through marriage entanglement and any change in your state (drunkenness, lust, sloth etc) has always immediately altered her state, even kilometres away… as you find out when you get home even if no trace of your activity remains.
All they needed to do is embed their operatives’ wives at HQ and they’d have achieved the same result for a fraction of the cost (a regular supply of chocolates and access to daytime TV )
The Chemists are now becoming socialists and Nanny state controllers.
First question. How much does the pharmacy Group donate to national.
Second question Ditto?
Apparently its too dangerous to allow the rest of us plebs to buy asprin in a service station!!!!!
Heartache over aspirin

Aspirin is being lined up for restricted sale, with pharmacists saying low doses of the popular family medicine are too dangerous for general sale to those with heart conditions.
And they are not stopping there – the widely-used medicinal comfort of paracetamol might also be pushed out of supermarkets and service stations into the restricted confines of a chemist.
LOL @ good ol’ Alliance-supporting Dim Wilson just now. Yeah, let’s go to the left’s comedian du jour Jonny Stewart for the final word. Oh look! He’s pulling a funny face while he takes something out of context! Ho ho ho! he’s so funny!
The MFM – a bunch of insects, just waiting to be squashed.
A huge event took place today in Washington called “Restoring Honor”, with an estimated 300,000 people marching on Washington organized by Fox anchor Glen Beck. It was not political at all, not organized by any political group, but was a conservative rally aimed at restoring America’s traditional values.
And how did TVNZ report it? With huge bias and criticism, using old sound bites by Glen Beck that made him sound racist, and criticizing him by playing Martin Luther King’s historic speech that took place in the same location, suggesting the messages were at odds. But King’s niece Alveda was at the event (something TVNZ’s report omitted entirely) and she supported it, saying –
“I am attending this rally to help reclaim America,” she told “Good Morning America’s” Ron Claiborne today from Capitol Hill. “I’m joining Glenn to talk about faith, hope, charity, honor. Those are things that America needs to reclaim. Our children need to remember to love each other how to honor each other, their parents, God and their neighbors. I agree with Glenn on all of those principles. So that’s why I’m here. For me it’s principles over politics.”
Just watched TV Ones news report on the rally in Washington. Fucking cock sucking lefty’s, TV1 are run by a bunch of commie suckholes. No real mention of what the issues were, just the evil Glen Beck and his hatred of the anointed one. One day these fucking lefty’s will wake up and wonder how it all went wrong, considering the amount of time they have spent pushing their lefty shit The commie MSM in NZ are two bobs. Oh P.S I’m not sucked in by your fucking play school reporting by paid arse kissing lefty fucktards, just in case any of you wankers read this.
Hi Fletch tried to post on your site but I screwed up, sorry about that. Reid, I doubt any of these wankers would read my rantings. I would say they would be to busy have a good wank under the anointed ones portrait, what’s the bet the TV1 studios are covered in, well you know what.
[Dim Wilson]Why aren’t you listening?!?! Nasty evil Mr Glenn Beck!!!! How dare he criticise Le Roi Soleil!!!!! On the steps of the Memorial where Dr King spoke too!!!!! Who cares if his niece was there, and a bunch of other people from different backgrounds who share the same values?!?!?!?! Beck is an evil nasty racist and I won’t let you get in the way of my smears!!!!! Waaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!!!![/Dim Wilson]
Pete, supporting the US soldiers, and also the original values of the founding fathers.
A crowd of several hundred thousand conservatives gathered in Washington yesterday to pay tribute to the sacrifice of America’s armed forces and to call for a return to America’s founding principles, in a show of strength that significantly exceeded most expectations. NBC News estimated there were around 300,000 attendees, two hundred thousand more than the 100,000 originally expected, while the event’s organisers put the figure at half a million. Whatever the final figure, this is without doubt one of the biggest rallies Washington has seen in the 21st Century. Even the leading standard bearer of the Left in the US media, The New York Times, admitted that “by any measure it was a large turnout. The crowd stretched from the Lincoln Memorial to the Washington Monument.”
As I already mentioned, King’s niece was supportive, and also King’s attorney and speech-writer says King would have as well.
Clarence B. Jones, who served as King’s personal attorney and his speechwriter, said he believes King would not be offended by Beck’s rally but “pleased and honored” that a diverse group of people would come together, almost five decades later, to discuss the future of America.
According to the bet they made about the number of people who would attend Beck’s rally, O’Reilly now has to give up his eight PM time slot to Beck. Be good if it happens, Beck can, with a bigger audience, drive the left even crazier and the Obama appeaser O’Reilly can go to 5pm where he belongs.
I love to see all these honour honkies collected in one place, proud to show the world what kind of fruitcakes they are.
And i love to watch the slightly burned over-brandied Sarah “the incinerator” Palin stumble over Dr King’s name while the audience gasps in shoch at the possibility their main heroine might just be a nigger-lover.
Oh sure Bryla – ‘honor’ is a word that doesn’t mean anything to the left anymore, except to honor their agenda.
I wonder what their idea of Utopia looks like. I’ve always wanted to ask Helen Clark that question: if she could have taken her little agenda even further – as far as she wanted to – what her idea of Utopia would be like, and whether that socialist/communist paradise would really even function. Somehow, I doubt it. It’s an experiment with a dead-end.
