No PIA I’m actually a conservative hawk who isn’t blinded by ideology. Seriously. My political grounding is firmly in the large military spending, socially conservative camp and if you look at all my posts collectively you’ll see that theme coming through loud and clear.

What I do recognise however, (unlike some here), is that conservatives can be just as disingenuous, sly, underhand and evil as lefties and sometimes, they also have agenda which needs to be exposed and crushed just like progressive agenda usually needs to be. The only difference between conservatives and progressives is the frequency. Conservatives sometimes do it, progressives almost always do it.

I guess it does not suit you to remember the good things the Yanks do.

If we both had a chance to sit a closed-book US Patriot exam BB, I’d almost guarantee I’d get a higher mark than you. I love the US. As I’ve said many many times, its leadership doesn’t serve it well. Same sentiment and thought goes to Israel. But it’s hard to see that, if you’re a fanatic.

Why Iraq?

You might have noticed that the US intervenes in matters of it’s own interest. No problem there, that is the same for any other country around the world.

Iraq threatened US interests in 1990 when they invaded Kuwait, creating unacceptable instability in the Gulf. It also threatened stability (and, at a stretch, the sovereignty) of Saudi Arabia – while not an ally of the US, a nation that was more friendly (on the face of it at least) than most others in the region. And, more importantly, one that could be relied upon to help maintain stability across the region.

In the second George W instance, Iraq had aligned itself too closely with interests that had made a direct attack on US citizens, on US soil – and what a spectacular attack it was!

Prople can argue, oil, vendettas and all manner of motivations, but dear old Saddy got a bit too close to the wrong people at the wrong time. While some within Saudi might have supporter /
Al Qaeda, the Saudi govt did not.

Those links, and others like them, are a primary reason why relations with Iran remain tense to day the least.

Irrespective of your personal views on (particularly the 2nd) Iraq war, dear old Adolf Mugabe has not yet made the mistake of a direct offensive on US citizens (which is not a passive acceptance that they shouldn’t have take. Accept, merely an illustration of why, perhaps, they haven’t.)

bhudson the connections between Saddam and Al-Qaida were extremely weak. It was the one real justification for the war, if any existed, but it didn’t exist, try as they might, to manufacture it. Have a look at both sides of the argument objectively, and look at the history between Iraq and Al-Qaida and the Taliban, pre-911. By comparison there was a much stronger case, if any case ever existed at all, to invade Saudi Arabia, but that wasn’t even mentioned in the press build-up, at all, ever. Why do you imagine that may have been?

As I recall, the Saudi links were more related to the particular flavor (sect?) of Islam popular within Saudi and which The Taliban, Osama and Al Qaeda generally were held to be either a part o, or aligned to.

Given your recent posts about specific adherents of Islam who perform terrible acts not neon representative of the religion generally, then surely you would not equate that sect with terrorism?

As to Iraqs links, unlike the ‘smoking gun’ evidence of WMD, the links to Al Qaeda became very evident through that little tete-a-tete and aftermath.

The first, and overriding point, holds true in any event – the US will act to protect it’s interests as it sees them. Any other country is exactly the same. To expect them, or any other country, to do otherwise is beyond naive

It will probably be the very first Collins, which is a piece of crap. Still, for a diesel-powered sub, the Collins has given the Yanks a number of headaches in wargames, albeit against Los Angeles class boats (and a carrier “kill”). Still, 75 Squadron RNZAF took a lot more “kills” for their buck.

bhudson happy to discuss details of alleged Iraqi-Al-Qaida connections however it’s a big topic, but happy to do so in rolling posts over days if you wish.

But just right now, to respond to your above point, well duh. As a geopolitical analyst who spends 90% of my time looking at overseas and 10% looking at domestic politics, of course nations act in their best interests. I’ve never said they don’t. And of course the best interests of the US were to get the 911 culprits. However, they resided, as they always did, in Af-Pak and Saudi, not in Iraq. The fact the US went into Iraq, does not make Iraq, de facto, the culprit.

The entire US govt and military command structure would not have launched into war if they all thought it was bullshit, of course they didn’t. However, just because a lot of people in the command structure thought it was true at that time, doesn’t make it true. Nor does it make if false. But you can’t allege it’s true, just cause they went ahead and did it.

Whyever not? If you read what I’ve said, I’ve never denied or minimised the extremist elements exist. All I’ve ever said was: what are the best tactics for dealing with them. Just because I don’t advocate the current tactics, doesn’t mean I don’t recognise there’s a real threat, it means merely that I don’t think the current tactics are the best ones to adopt.

Actually whether the US interests were to pursue the 9/11 culprits or ‘big oil’ has always been debatable. My point on US interests is that it is not for us to dictate to them on what it is that is sufficient for gem to decide to act [my personal opinion is that it was not about control of oil, however if that was the extent of their interests then that was their political decision to take.]

I think there has always been a great deal of circumstantial evidence of links between he Iraqi regime and terrorists – including Al Qaeda. As events transpired, it certainly played out that those links were real (unless one chooses to believe that AQ rode to the defence of Iraq like white knights on their chargers after the event.)

The Saudi links are religious – Wahhabi. While it is held they Wahhabi is somewhat extreme and preaches death to the west/infidels, the ‘small group of adherents does not make all complicit’ argument you have used recently with respect to Islam generally must also hold true here – there is no evidence to show that all Wahhabi adherents work to kill westerners (directly or through support) and therefore your previous argument must surely hold true here too.

Having said that, as you note in reference to you role/interest in geopolitics, ultimately all of world diplomacy is nothing more than the dance of geopolitics. And that links back to my point of US interests – ultimately they held it was in their interests to ‘address’ this matter with Iraq (in the first instance at least) and not Syria, Iran, Sudan, or even Saudi (not that the last was ever likely.)

As I am sure you would acknowledge, this is a regional play, not a US vs Iraq thing. Perhaps the one element which doesn’t make a great deal of sense to me is that Iraq is. Shi’ite majority which was ruled by a Sunni minority. Saudi is (at least held to be) a Sunni majority. Iraq is a Shi’ite majority. Toppling Saddy’s Sunni govt has resulted in a strongly Shi’ite nation on Saudi’s border – one that is more religiously aligned to Iran than Saudi.

That part doesn’t make sense. It doesn’t make sense that Saudi has been silent about it. And it doesn’t make sense that the US would act to create that political-religious tension.

And no, I don’t think Tom Clancy is a seer

Rampant nepotism, discrimination against women and poor performance among senior staff are revealed in a damning report into police culture.

It looks likely to result in the departure of Deputy Commissioner Rob Pope.

It is understood Mr Pope has told senior management he will not seek reappointment when his five-year term ends in April. Police Minister Judith Collins said she would not comment on Mr Pope’s future until he did.

The report, by Pricewaterhouse Coopers and published yesterday, is the third since the commission of inquiry led by Dame Margaret Bazley reported back in April 2007. The Bazley inquiry was sparked by Dominion Post investigations into police conduct.

Since the inquiry, police have been criticised for taking too long to implement the cultural changes identified. The latest report says that, although there had been significant cultural change, it has reached a plateau.

Ms Collins said yesterday that outgoing Commissioner Howard Broad had implemented a lot of changes, but “pockets of resistance” still needed to be tackled.

“Those are areas where the incoming commissioner [Peter Marshall] will be wanting to address.”

Mr Marshall starts in April.

The report said management had tolerated the continuation and appointment of the wrong people to high places, had failed to act decisively where needed, and management styles were inconsistent.

“We must never forget – we promoted the hell out of Clint Rickards. Almost to the very top. It must never happen again,” one officer said in the report.

Mr Rickards was acquitted of rape in 2006 after being charged as a result of Dominion Post investigations into the Louise Nicholas case.

Other officers told PricewaterhouseCoopers that appointments were based on who you knew rather than merit, and management had forgotten what it was like on the beat.

“The commissioner and all his inspector mates in bullshit castle at headquarters should get back on the street and get a reality check,” one said. Ms Collins said there were a few police staff left who were unco-operative.

“That really goes to the heart of the issue about why those people shouldn’t be in New Zealand police any more … ”

The report said that, although many of the Bazley commission’s recommendations had been implemented, compliance had been technically achieved without culture change.

Another problem area was rostering, with a graph of staff on duty in 2007 showing heavy staffing early in the week and fewer over the weekend when crime and demand were at their highest.

“It is appalling to think that, back in 2007 … there were more police officers on duty on a Monday night than … on a Saturday night,” Ms Collins said.

Deputy Police Commissioner Viv Rickard said: “We accept that ticking off the technical implementation of the recommendations of the commission of inquiry has only taken us part of the way.

“We need to fully engage on a range of mechanisms to bring about change and improvement.”

Among the report’s findings were:

No action over poor-performing senior staff at police headquarters.

Police files revealed “highly inappropriate behaviour” by staff which was worthy of dismissal but received only a warning.

Rosters based on staff needs, not risk and demand.

Many staff felt the wrong people were sometimes given senior roles.

Wide inconsistency in the abilities of area commanders.

Little confidence in the detection of any concerning staff behaviour.

The commission of inquiry lacked impact as a driver of change.

Police need to implement “basic management concepts”.

In 2008 the Pentagon published a study after reviewing available Iraqi intelligence and defence documents (over 600000 of them) and concluded that there was no evidence of any specific, direction connection between Saddam’s government and al-Qaeda. It identifed that Saddam had supported pan-Arab nationalist and Islamist groups in the region and internationally, but primarily to further its own interests and target Iraqi dissidents. It had specific objectives and fostered ties with some groups, such as those in Egypt, but not it seems with al-Qaeda.

My thoughts are that while al-Qaeda appeared in Iraq after the invasion, it was more capitialising on the power vaccuum in the country (no local security forces, disbanded military, inadequate coalition forces to maintain security). And it needs to be remembered that al-Qaeda were only one of a number of groups operating in the 2003- period, from Shiite militias to the fedayen to Sunni groups, to disaffected former army. The secular violence that occurred fed of itself as each group responded to attacks by the others.

Al-Qaeda were definitely one of the worst, and seem to have deliberately targeted particulalry Shiite targets to encourage reprisals, but to say they were supported by Saddam’s regime seems to be incorrect.

You’re as confused as he is Offshore. If he didn’t post here in the first place he wouldn’t get attacked.

More often than not he attacks first. He doesn’t initiate or join discussions. It’s obvious he comes here just to disrupt and to try and promote his own blog.

He keeps saying he hates it here and won’t waste his time here, and then spits shit as he keeps spending his time here. Duh.

When you try criticising someone as “not sensible” in a post that makes no sense it highlights your own nonsense. Duh.
