Have just returned from the vigil outside parliament. Very well done. Hit the right tone. Crowd was impressive and it was a joy to be amongst so many (thousands) of great people who all acted in an exemplary manner. A true demonstration of support to the people of Christchurch, visitors to that city caught up in the tragedy and the wider Canterbury community.

    You are surely not alone.

Am very proud to be a NZer.

    Kia Kaha

A large sombre crowd in the Octagon. You’ll never walk alone.

A large crowd of largely young students (18-30 age group) taking part in O-week celebrations at University of Waikato (which are ALWAYS noisy) fell absolutely silent for the full two minutes, and any malcontent was rapidly ‘shusshed’ You could have heard the metaphorical ‘pin’ drop.

Impressive, surprising, and yes, I’m proud of them.

Thought you might like to know.

I saw cars pulling over for the duration on Gt South Road. An amazing sight.

Actually there was someone protesting at parliament. They had apparently missed the last week and decided to protest about our suicide rate in nz at parliament (which is fine).

However they were playing a guitar badly (why do they always have guitars) just as the ceremony started. When they were asked to be quiet, instead of waiting 20 minutes they declared their right to protest now and called everyone hypocrits for supporting the earthquake instead of suicide prevention. It looked about to get messy but she was moved on very quickly and trespassed by security.

    Total nutter.

Grendel: Yep, saw her too. Afterwards she was singing/playing guitar badly up molesworth st. Just about everyone that walked past her had looks of either pity or disgust on their face.

Over in Canberra, both chambers of the National parliament assembled at 10.49 am local time, rather than the usual 2.00 pm, so that they could onserve the two minutes silence at 12.51 NZ time.

    That’s what family does.

    [DPF: That's very classy]

A small point I know, but why has ‘two minute’s silence’ got an apostrophe? Simple plural surely. And this on the front page of the Dom Post!

I joined a crowd of around 500 or so in Tauranga’s Red Square for the silence, and a small group sang the NZ National Anthem (beautifully). It was a very sombre and moving occasion.

I’m really beginning to take a liking to Julia Gillard.

    I’m glad she’s my big sister. :)

It’s wrong either way. it’s either two minutes’ silence (ie the silence of two minutes) or a two-minute silence. If it was s simple plural it would be ‘two minutes silent”, not silence. /pedantry

  13. bearhunter (859) Says:

    Or two minutes of silence…

  14. ropata (115) Says:

TV3 coverage was awful. Sandwiched their 2 minutes between ad breaks and Dr. Phil. Afterwards they talked over the national anthem & statements from dignitaries. One reporter interviewed another reporter about her eq experience, “I lost a fruit bowl” WTF!?

At least they covered it I suppose and their reporters weren’t gleefully jumping about like the giddy teenagers of TV1

  15. ropata (115) Says:

And the silence, from a busy suburb in Auckland, was beautiful. The only sound was cicadas. Usually I hear cars and hammers and children yelling all day.
