New Zealander

New Zealand’s media is now dominated by the Pravda-esque TVNZ, tabloid New Zealand Herald, and woke Newshub and Stuff.

Take this morning’s article for example. Not once does Mr Maxwell mention “New Zealand.” A future Maori Republic of Aotearoa is just one of our decidedly left-wing media’s crusades. A foreign reader would surely ask, “what country are they talking about?”

  You only have to listen to TVNZ or RNZ. Very rarely do they refer to New Zealand. Instead they refer regularly to the islands of NZ and the country itself with the fictitious names devised by 19th Century missionaries and story tellers.
  
  It is insulting to anybody listening to even suggest that these are traditional Maori names for New Zealand or the islands of New Zealand. They are not and never were.

      Cobalt, thank you for that article. As I wrote above, this use of fictitious bestowed names from missionaries and 19th Century writers as somehow being genuine, is insulting to everybody.
      
      Like most Kiwi kids, I was taught this stuff at primary school (1960s), but I had the temerity to question my teacher about it then. My questions left her dumbfounded when I question the Maui/North Island fish myth. She had no answer, except to say I was disrespecting Maoridom and it got me into trouble.

    It’s not really that our forebears “pioneered and settled,” it’s that they did so as white people. Ditto the practice of slavery, which has been ubiquitous across all cultures and regions throughout history and is not inherently an inter racial matter. Much is made of the species of behaviour in question, which is then widely denounced, but this is always only a superficial element, a Trojan horse if you will. The real intended target is always the underlying “crime” of whiteness, for which all must supplicate themselves to other racial groups. It’s fundamentally about first undermining and then taking political and social power from one group – using rhetorical tactics designed to place the recipient on the defensive and instill a sense of guilt – then giving it to others, necessarily to the detriment of the former.

    Depending on who you are ‘our forebears’ could have arrived as far back as the early fourteenth century as what would now be called settlers.
    Back then they probably didn’t give too much thought to the terminology.
    They had more important things to worry about.
    NZ became a British colony in 1841. Subsequently arrivals were colonists until the country gained independence in 1852.

  I don’t even know half the names of government departments now. That doesn’t bother me so much as I’ll get used to it. But, preferential treatment of maori is appalling.
  
  It seems to be an unstoppable movement. Act under Don Brash opposed this but they never gained serious support.
  
  What are you going to do about it? As far as I can tell, the only option is to leave New Zealand as it heads towards seperatism.

      filter,I had the same views, and initially it was one of the reasons I stayed overseas for 25 years. I use to get irritated by the phoney transition to a woke country, that was continuing to embrace Maoridom to the exclusion of other cultures.As has happened in SA with Zulu history and culture, we have witnessed a complete phoney invention of Maori culture and tradition, to the extent that next year we will have another public holiday in June for Matariki (a total nonsense).

  A year or three ago, Maxwell reported for a minor local publication. A local hack. A decent, but unspectacular occupation.
  
  He kicked his toe on a present-time golden nugget for gaining journalism attention: learning Maori language.
  
  Starting lessons, Maxwell promised readers a diary of a one-year journey to master the language.
  
  A language diary is dry-dust boring to most, and the few others will be more interested in the rich language offerings on YouTube.
  
  But Maxwell didn’t talk grammar or vocabulary. Maxwell bombarded the mainly White readers of INL (which become Stuff) with the shortcomings of White New Zealand and White New Zealanders.
  
  He was angry, and you can, well, kick shit out of White New Zealanders in way you can’t get away with, for example, against White Aussies.
  
  INL/Stuff used Maxwell as click bait – internet lure. “What is this outrageous shit?” Click!
  
  The tone hasn’t improved. The hostility lingers. Maxwell’s still very pissed off with White New Zealand. He notably yells in the great English language — not in his newly acquired Maori tongue.
  
  Maxwell’s drivel may prompt clicks on Stuff’s web site from Guilty-White-Liberal types. But it must be hell on the flow of donations that Stuff survives on.

  So a public holiday that moves each and every year, and is particular to little old “Aotearoa”. In addition to the additional direct costs for businesses of another public holiday, we also need to get the likes of Microsoft and the other tech companies to build-in recognition of the holiday into IT systems, but more importantly, Payroll systems need to be set-up to cope with another moveable holiday.
  
  This is NOT trivial. It will have an additional cost.

    Not to mention Easter Monday & Christmas.
    I went to a string of Catholic schools that were influenced by Irish priests. I remember one telling us how marvelous the IRA was and speaking ill of the Orange people.
    Fortunately all this talk didn’t catch on and the Orange Lodge Hall in Timaru escaped being bombed. As kids we used to have stone throwing fights with the Protestants, but we had the O’Reillys on our side so we were fine. (Read Denis)

      FWIW when I did all this 10-odd years ago, I think the wait for my biopsy was like 6 months. That was all private. There was an MRI in there someplace. Another three or four months before I had the (also private) robotic surgery. Nobody seemed too worried.
      
      Obviously it worked out as I am still here, Funnily enough I know about a dozen other blokes who have had various forms of PCa treatment. None of us are part of the “20-30%” who can reputedly still hang a towel on the old fella.

      In Tauranga, diagnosed in June 2019, biopsy, tests, MRI x 2, and radiation treatment all done before Christmas 2019! Follow up still being done through Urology BOPDHB, all tests clear as at today!

    Hey Doc of What? do you understand electricity generation?
    
    Installed capacity is the maximum output power of a power station, not the expected power output.
    
    This is a meaningless value with solar/wind because they do not work when you want them to work – only when they feel like working.
    
    With a coal/nuke/hydro plant if the grid wants power then just flip a switch and they start generating.
    
    Sure, those sources are not available all the time because they need down time for maintenance etc, but that can be scheduled and planned.
    
    For those sources, the availability is 90% and the confidence of availability is extremely high (close to 100%).
    
    If you have a power station with two generators then you can turn one off for maintenance and the other keeps running.
    
    For solar/wind the availability is very low: the sun only shines with guts 25% of the time or less. Therefore the capacity should be rated as a quarter of what it says on the packet.The wind is about the same. And in both cases the confidence of availability is very low because you do not know when the sun is going to shine or the wind is going to blow.
    
    Worse still, you don’t just lose part of the generation capability. When ths sun doesn’t shine the whole solar farm goes down; wind is the same story.
    
    All of these only work when there is a huge normal power generation system to back them up.
    
    That means you end up needing many times the installed capacity to get the power you need.

        Please do not be smug about your lack of understanding of science.
        
        Power is rated in W or kW or whatever. This is how much energy that something produces or consumes PER SECOND.
        
        Energy is rated in Joules or kW-hours. A kWhour is the energy from 1kW for an hour. ie 3.6MJ.
        
        On a sunny day, your system is producing 30kWh per day. There are 24 hours in the day, so that is an average of 1.25kW.
        
        1.25kW is less than 24% of 5.3kW.
        
        So in the best possible conditions you’re not even making 24%.
        
        Now what does it output on an overcast day? Or in winter?
        
        I wager that all told you’re not making over 15% averaged over a year.

        I applaud you’re understanding of the science, however there is one error in your math I couldn’t help but point out. The sun doesn’t shine for 24hrs a day.
        
        At best you’ll get 8-9 hours of direct sunlight, at an optimal angle during summer months. Much less during winter obviously, with the average being something like 4.5hrs in NZ.
        
        8×5.3=42.4kwh/day, so you’re correct that this solar system is underperforming, but by only 20-30%. As an example, our 5.5kw solar array produced 38.4kwh on a mostly fine day today with occasional clouding.

        Availability is how much you get out of a system based on its nameplate (installed) capacity.
        
        Availability is low because the sun does not shine and the wind does not blow.
        
        6GW of solar is only worth the same as about 1GW of coal plant.

    Wind turbines only last 20 years so by 2060 all the wind turbines will have been replaced up to 3 times. Solar power isn’t much better. What of all the massive holes in the ground from mining the minerals needed, the disposal of all the waste turbines and solar panels, the Co2 footprint created from them. What about all the rare earth minerals used, (China has most of them), what happens when they’re depleted. Lithium isn’t going to last for ever, what about the expensive disposal of all the spent lithium batteries and the co2 footprint created by that. China will never have a zero carbon footprint. It’s just CCP propaganda to keep the world eyes off them

    China has a huge Nuclear program on the horizon which will actually deliver 90% of it’s capacity day in, day out. Rain or shine.

    Where has strategic planning gone, 30+ yrs.
    NZ will be at mercy of all in a few years time without identifying key stretegic assets and keeping them nationalised.

It’s called gender reassignment. 80% of teens who feel they are “transgender” but do nothing apparently grow out of it and usually just end up being gay as adults. “Fixing” kids or teens who might happen to be gay has been called a form of “rehabilitated homophobia”, which seems quite on the mark:

Just a question about borrowing and now it has been released that our unemployment figures have dropped inthe last quarter from 5.3% to 4.9% which ensures a very similar tax take from before Coronavirus struck our shores do you think that our Government should stop borrowing billions on top of the one hundred billion that has already been borrowed.
Now we all know what Labour has done every other time they have become the Government, unemployment drops because Labourincreases the public service to hide unemployment figures.but now more than ever we need to stop spending to help the future generations that will be left to pay this debt.

Two things make this particularly interesting, she is single and she started 5 years ago with $100,000 of debt.

As I have said previously, the housing crisis is more of an “affordability” crisis and many of the moaners are just not willing to put in the effort or compromise. This woman did both.

    Single income is the key there Ian in case you missed it.
    
    No, she didn’t save $700 per week. For 3 years she paid back $30,000 pa approx plus dribbled into her Kiwisaver. Then she saved $43,000 over 2 years @ $445 ish per week by doing extra work as well as her job.
    
    She accumulated approx $30,000, probably less the $10,000 Homestart grant, in Kiwisaver over 5 years so $4,000 pa. That could be the 8% max that many now contribute so $50,000 pa, hardly “very well paid” employment.
    
    My point stands. She worked extra hours and jobs, saved hard, compromised and is nopw a homeowner. It may not be all she’d hoped for but it gets her on the ladder.
    
    Now factor in the second income with a partner/spouse/mate and the job gets easier.
    
    Batman refers to “snowflakes” above and I think that many that whinge about housing are just that, lazy snowflakes and yes, we deal with them far more than most.

    She worked part time jobs as well, and I bet she didn’t flit off overseas for a holiday, or buy expensive clothes, or a new car or go on drinking benders with her mates –
    When we were saving, back in the ’60s, we flatted with another couple, and both of us worked. I worked extra shifts. And we never travelled out of the country.
    That’s what you had to do if you didn’t have a Bank-of-Mum-and-Dad, or a family trust.

    I do not. Extra $17,000 needs an extra $3400 deposit with the balance @ 2.29% an extra $13.00 per week.
    
    The average person is capable of an extra few extra hours per week. Chop neighbours’s trees, mow lawns, clean gutters, bag potatoes, work a shift in a carparking building, grow produce and sell it locally, give up cigarettes and alcohol for a couple of years.
    
    There are literally hundreds of things people can do to raise extra money …. legally.
    
    But nah, sit at home, look at the telly and moan like fuck about how hard it is to a pathetic journalist. Is that now the Kiwi way?

      Actually, low interest rates and poor alternative investments for retirement are the primary reason causing people to look to housing as an investment.
      
      Look at the stock market and tell me that most kiwis view that as safe. Poor regulation and a market that is ripe for corruption gives little confidence for many.

    On a 20% deposit the extra deposit would have been 20% of $17k = $3.5k. Extra loan would have been 80% of $17k – about $13k. Payments on extra loan would have been maybe $16/week.
    
    I don’t have an opinion as to whether that would stymie a purchase …. just running the numbers

      I suppose the problem is multiplying by 52 but buying a house is more than a 5 minute plan.
      
      When we bought our first house we had travelled overseas and worked and saved so came home debt free but with a few bucks in the pocket. I sought jobs that gave access to a mortgage but found the public service too stifling so started my own business using my skills and knowledge from overseas.
      
      A couple of extra jobs later, plus a few tutoring jobs and the deposit was found.
      
      What is different?

We need more than a sprinkle of te reo in our culture for the Māori language to thrive – Shilo Kino
It is good to see our biggest television media network here in Aotearoa normalising the use of te reo Māori. On the 6pm news, te Reo now extends beyond the usual “kia ora, good evening”. But shouldn’t this be the bare minimum for our publicly funded broadcaster? [1] the Guardian UK

But these quickly delivered little Maori phrases – thanking reporters or welcoming audiences to the next news section, for example : sport – have absolutely no translation, or even website reference where they could be looked up and studied, so flit through as much a mystery as any other Maori untranslated remains.
Some words appear to be mis-pronounced (with syllables ending in consonants, which in Maori is supposedly impossible) so that makes it more difficult to use any other reference, like Google, to learn what was said.

In this form, without the phrases shown in a bottom of screen caption, either in Maori or English, the whole exercise is tokenism with no substance or teaching value.
And it is not “normalising” the language – it is creating an attitude of irritating irrelevance.
Considering $400 – 600 million is spent a year on retrieving te reo from extinction, this service could be much better value for money.
But, again, it seems like anything Labour presents – plenty of words, but no actual delivery.

    Don’t worry, the Shilo Kino nonsense appears only in the New Zealand pseudo-edition of the Guardian.
    
    You won’t find it in the Guardian UK, US, Australia, or international editions.
    
    The Guardian doesn’t have an official NZ edition, but when you log on to the site from a New Zealand internet address you go to a version of the Guardian that has New Zealand stories, usually four or five of them.
    
    Go to the Guardian through VPN (and every Kiwiblog follower should have VPN ready for the coming Labour-Green restrictions on free speech). You won’t find the Shilo Kino story at all, because the Guardian site can’t tell you are dialling from New Zealand.
    
    This pseudo-edition enables New Zealand Lefties to preen themselves up with the claim, “it’s in the Guardian.”
    
    Sorry, it’s only in the phoney New Zealand Guardian, readership a few thousand at most.

  I did once look up one of the simpler phrases, but haven’t bothered with any of the others. Even if I wanted to, they’re rattled off too quickly for me to be able to guess at how to spell them.
  
  As you say, it’s tokenism – nothing more. From what I see and hear, it does nothing to “normalise” the language – I’m certainly not hearing more use of the Maori language at my workplace, around my community, or in the shops.
  
  I’m afraid Shilo Kino (the author of this article) is living in a dream land. She writes that the language study book “Māori Made Easy” by Scotty Morrison has become a “staple in every household”. Really? Every household?? Sorry but I call utter BS on that claim.
  
  She asks why the Labour government won’t commit to making te reo Māori compulsory in schools? Well, quite possibly because at a time when our students are falling behind other developed countries in maths and science skills, maybe the government realises that there are other subjects that we should be concentrating on?
  
  To be clear, I have absolutely no issue with people learning the Maori language, if they want to. And I believe classes should be made widely available. I’d even go so far as to say they should be subsidised.
  
  But don’t make it compulsory. At a time when our children have an ever-increasing amount of skills they are expected to learn, including some that would never have been dreamed of twenty years ago, learning a second language – ANY language – to some degree is a “nice-to-have”, but that’s it.

    I find the sprinkling of Maori on the TV News totally irritating and make me think those who do it are just showing off, so I’m now finding other avenues to get the news. Also the Maori names for our cities and country annoy me intensely. It would be good if we could have an English only channel seeing we already have at least one channel for Maori. I’m always surprised when folks tell me they never learnt any NZ history at school.

I never took history as such as a subject, but somewhere along the line in Primary School, I learnt a fair amount about the arrival of folks to this country (as it was understood in the 1960s) and how they lived here.
I had to do a big project on the settlement of my town (Whanganui) in Form 2.

I must admit I was pretty bored with NZ history by the time I reached high school and it held little appeal as a subject.

I wonder if other children will get bored with 9-10 years of learning about Aotearoa NZ’s history.

    I grew up in Africa where everything wants to kill you: insects, scorpions, snakes, bats, lightning and people.
    
    I got bitten by a snake, monkeys, ticks, ants, spiders. I got stung by scorpions, hornets and killer bees. I got attacked by a rabid bat. And I won’t go into details about people wanting to kill me.
    
    I remember the first time looking at NZ bush and thinking there are no snakes to worry about – pretty liberating.

  I recall learning about ‘the Maoris’ at primary school. That was all about pre-contact tribal life – nothing about the NZ wars.
  But I did a fair bit of NZ history at college, modules on the welfare state, NZ in the world, etc, although most of the material was on European history.

    I must have learnt about the stockade at Cooks Garden and the Battle of Moutua Island and the Hauhau sometime by Std 4, because there was no way there would be any teaching of anything about Maori Wars or NZ wars whilst I was at a Quaker School.

        The crux of the current argument is whether there is going to be one dictated Leftist version of history inculcated in our school children.
        
        And it will be at the expense of English and maths, where our school standards are sliding.

      The issue will be what it leaves out.
      
      Obviously, the aim is to downplay the effects of White settlement, and to raise views of the role of the local indigenous tribes, still battling away with stone tools, without a written language or the wheel, and having for centuries forgotten their Polynesian heritage of ocean voyaging.
      
      How New Zealand was made into a viable, First World economy (farming methods, land ownership, cadastral system, banking, the role of Australian graziers, refrigeration etc) will be a bloody footnote.

Great, I thought, a chance to learn some useful skills, like how to start a business, design and market a phone app or produce a music video. But no, there is to be “a focus on social action, real world contexts, and connecting with community groups within and beyond the school”.

  The pa appears to have been a baited trap, as it had little strategic importance, for the British forces with most of its occupants, except warriors having left. and even then plan seems to have been defend the place, annoy the British and then disappear into the forest.

    Finally their solution was to BORROW to cover up the mess they have made.
    This can’t continue.

Some facts around the Pfizer vaccine roll-out:
1) It is not to be given to those under 16, pregnant women or those with contra-indications. Those groups amount to about 25% of the population
2) The DG of Health wants 70% of the population vaccinated. This would require close to 95% takeup amongst the remainder of the population.
3) Medsafe have said that it is proven effective for two months (although that figure may extend as more of the world is vaccinated).
4) Britain has taken two months to give the first dose to a quarter of its population

      @Oskar – correct. But Don was partially correct, there are loads of cell lines that weren’t made from aborted tissue e.g. The Caco-2 cell line was developed by the Sloan-Kettering Institute for Cancer Research (USA) through research conducted by Dr. Jorgen. It is a colorectal cell line immortalized from a carcinoma biopsy from a 72 year old Caucasian male. The chromosome number is 96, occurring at 16% with polyploidy at ~3%. Its mostly used for drug/cehmcial absorption and transporter studies.
      
      Hep G2 is a liver cell line derived from the liver tissue of a 15 year old caucasian male with hepatocellular carcinoma. Mostly used for drug metabolism studies, although enzyme levels are low. The cells are epithelial, have a modal chromosome number of 55 and a rearranged chromosome 1. HepG2 were transformed by Prof. B. Knowles at the Wistar Institute in 1979 (USA).
      
      So there is an argument from some people that the HEK293 is morally/ethically/religiously repugnant, particularly if non-fetal (or embryonic) cells could also be used for this purpose. I get that, I don’t agree with it; but I understand it and support objectors rights to object.
      
      Couple other pertinent things:
      (1) Because HEK293 are embryonic they have very few genes expressed, so we use them commonly for cloning in the genes of interest as there’s no background noise and we can study mechanism. I have several CYP, UGT, STS and SULT wild type and mutant clones in my lab right now to study drug metabolism and also the structural effects of the mutants <– that work is very hard to do in NZ because of your restrictive cloning laws from the 1990s.
      
      (2) The Pope was so concerned about this for the vaccines, he issued a papal bull allowing vaccine use by decree.

    This is partially accurate. These cells are not really human any more, they are at best humanoid, they are also immortalized.
    
    The HEK 293 cell line was generated by transforming primary human embryonic kidney cells (cultured from normal aborted fetuses).
    
    HEK293 were made in 1972 by Professor Alex Van der Eb (Holland) using sheared adenovirus 5 DNA which inserted a ~4.5 kilobase piece of the the viral genome into chromosome 19.
    
    HEK293 are hypotriploid. The modal chromosome number is 64, occurring in 30% of cells. The rate of cells with higher ploidies is ~4.2 %. Notably the cells are XXX.

        It’s [part of] my job to disseminate science, and that’s not just teaching Uni students. We should also acknowledge when there is partial truth to something that is a bit “ick” or could be used for misinformation. The only way to prevent that, is to educate.
        
        Scientists can be really crap communicators and/or we forget that jargon invades all our fields (e.g. see my reply to Hard Cheese below, the Mods occasionally catch me with the jargon, but I should know better), I have been explaining my job to my Mum and Step Dad for 20+ years plus various community groups – with varying levels of success.

        Kidneys from aborted fetuses were dissected, homogenized (like when you make a smoothie in a blender), and digested with enzymes until single cells floated in a nutrient solution.
        
        The good Prof then coaxed a piece of DNA taken from a virus (called adenovirus 5) across the cell membrane. Likely in those days he used a small electric shocks that produced transient holed in the cell that did not kill it (electroporation) –> these days we use a lipid carrier.
        
        That piece of DNA once it got into the cell nucleus integrated into the host cell DNA at the genetic level causing mutations. The mutations caused the cells to divide badly, so they didn’t always copy faithfully and the progeny cells picked up extra copies of chromosomes (ploidy) which caused even more of a mess in the genetics and eventually the cells just kept on dividing forever (immortalized cell line) and refused to senesce (die). Along the way they lost a lot of the markers that normally are seen in human cells, but we can still use them for certain lab experiments. All models are wrong, some models are useful.

  Interesting. I was at Freyburg Place at the time of Diwali last year, and very nice the decorations of the steps were indeed. And they are again decorated, in the picture in the Stuff article, for gay pride.
  
  I happened to go there at Christmastime too. The steps were bare of any decoration at all. There was a star still standing from the Diwali decoration. But nothing for Christmas, a festival celebrated by the overwhelming majority of New Zealanders. I wonder why.

  This website requires the proper reporting of all side effects resulting from the administration of vaccines.
  
  Finally, for some balance about the sad death of the late Captain Sir Tom Moore.
  
  He was admitted to Bedford Hospital after being treated for pneumonia for some time. He later tested positive for Covid. He didn’t die because of Covid, he died because of pneumonia (which is an almost certain killer of people as old as Sir Tom, who had also had a history of other medical conditions), which was then complicated by Covid. So, to the NZ media, some honesty in your reporting, please!

    Was interesting on ZB yesterday the host, Simon said that 7 years ago he was admitted to hospital for a flu that turned to severe pneumonia. He also has asthma. He is in his early 50’s now. But serious deadly effect do happen even with regular flu.
    
    Last year the young rugby player died from flu turned to pneumonia. And a 12 year old.

      SK, my mother in law died of pneumonia (in the UK as it happened) nearly 10 years ago.
      
      On the Friday afternoon, she had a cough, by Monday night we called the ambulance (we were told then it was pneumonia,. On the Tuesday we were told she had a 40% chance of surviving (but would need to live with an oxygen mask). She died 12 days later. The complications of a coronavirus were not mentioned.

A couple of matters.

1. I agree with Michael Bassett that Cindy and Angry appear to be walking back their Hate Speech Laws. He suggests and I agree the focus groups including Labour and Green voters have warmed to the idea like a bucket of cold sick. I expect the idea will now fade however we conservatives must remain ever vigilant. Like rust Socialism never sleeps.

2. The Climate Change Report ( the only one done by ANY Government so hats off to Cindy etc) shows that NZ GDP would shrink 16%. This Report is getting traction internationally with those who see CG as a means of wealth transfer to Governments. Again conservatives and those who value their standard of living should keep beating the drum on the Report.
The Government commissioned the Report so they own it and its contents. Any attempt to dismiss it because it doesnt accord with their views should be laughed at and dismissed.

On the unemployment numbers. Back in the early 70s my Economics lecturer said that full employment meant 5% unemployed. He said these were the unemployable.

I suggest you ask the business owners who are desperate for staff and they will tell they cant find people for their jobs. Economies dont grow if there arent the right people to fill jobs.

  Unemployment levels below approx 5% mean that we’re really scraping the barrel and are putting incompetent people into the workforce.
  
  This is not a good thing because they are a drain on the productivity of the people around them.

Sixty three year old Gary Grimmer was due to appear in court on Tuesday for arson of 160,000 tyres.
Last year he was sentenced to nine months’ supervision after setting alight a smaller pile at the same site.
Judge Jane Farish said it was clear he was motivated by frustration and had ‘snapped’ because he felt nothing was being done.
Grimmer’s action was not to cause damage, but to bring attention to his plight.

Although I find archeology fascinating, but archeologists are open to quite irrational flights of fantasy.

There’s some speculation about the carved wooden dog found in Monck’s Cave.

Okay, we all laughed and joked at the memes of frumpy ol’ Bernie sitting at Biden’s inauguration with his mittens on … but a high school teacher wrote an op-ed accusing him of “displaying white privilege, male privilege and class privilege, in ways that my students could see and feel.”

Ingrid Seyer-Ochi, a former UC Berkeley professor, wrote in the San Francisco Chronicle, that:

“We talked about gender and the possible meanings of the attire chosen by Vice President Kamala Harris, Dr Jill Biden, the Biden grandchildren, Michelle Obama, Amanda Gorman and others. We referenced the female warriors inspiring these women, the colours of their educational degrees and their monochromatic ensembles of pure power.”

(Seriously?)

“And there, across all of our news and social media feeds, was Bernie: Bernie memes, Bernie sweatshirts, endless love for Bernie. I puzzled and fumed … I don’t know many poor, or working class, or female, or struggling-to-be-taken-seriously folk who would show up at the inauguration of our 46th president dressed like Bernie. Unless those same folk had privilege. Which they don’t.”

Following this load of cods-wallop, a bunch of people basically told her to pull her head in.

“What fresh hell is this take, I don’t even understand. The dude wore mittens and a big coat because it was cold and then he turned around and raised a ton of money for charity.”

“My eyes rolled so high and so hard it hurt. I’m thinking if you’re offended by Bernie’s mittens you might be getting a bit over-fragile,” one Twitter user wrote.

“Which is the white privilege: a man dressed in a heavy coat in winter, or a schoolteacher telling us how she imagines her students would perceive it instead of letting her students see it and speak for themselves,” another woman asked.

I am surprised how many adults say, without a hint of embarrassment, ‘I didn’t learn anything about that at school’. This can cover anything from how to write a cheque to what happened in NZ’s past.
If they didn’t learn it at school does that mean they never learn it?
Don’t they ever read a book?
My life would have been much more limited if my knowledge had been restricted to only what I learned at school. And I went to a great school with brilliant teachers.

I remember when

It was interesting yesterday watching a honey bee on lawn that I mowed the day before.
I had just removed a couple of yellow (weed) flowers that had escaped the grim reaper.
A bee appeared and hawked low over the area around where the flowers had been – I was thinking it was going to be wasting its time.
However, as I watched, it was concentrating on the restricted area, travelling in measured sweeps.
Then it found a lone clover flower which I had not noticed.
It was like watching a search and rescue operation.

This is interesting as Cindy’s bunch have promised similar legislation, but have been slow to follow through.
It seems that the ruling socialist party in Spain has proposed a law banning churches and psychologists from engaging in “conversion therapy” with LGBT persons, even when these persons request it.
It’s the last bit that caught my eye: “even when these persons request it.”
It’s apparently quite common for young people to have periods of confusion over their sexuality, which the grow out of. But under this draconian plan, if they felt they needed professional help, something that was vital for their mental wellbeing, they couldn’t get it.
Is this really the path we want to go down?

  Israel is a country of under 9 million. I suppose the USA can sell more stuff to China 1,366 million and Iran 77 million.
  
  Strongest ally? What does that mean? Surely it would be reasonable for the new US government to try to change the traditional ways of seeing and doing things.
  
  Not so long back a new president coming in and doing things according to his own perspective and chucking the conventional rulebook out the window was a cause for celebration.

  Watercare make my blood boil.
  
  They should have been telling people to conserve water in January 2020. Remember all the news stories in January and February about Aucklanders and Northlanders on tank water running out? The six to eight week waits for a tanker … IF you could get a delivery at all? Families with babies running out of water? People unable to take showers?
  
  In January, some parts of the upper North Island recorded less than 10 per cent of typical rainfall, and northern Auckland, Great Barrier Island and southern Northland began experiencing a “severe meteorological drought”.
  
  And Watercare said nothing.
  
  Aucklanders carried on as normal – on January 31, they used 538 million litres of water, breaking the previous record of 535 million litres. On February 4, that record was smashed again when residents used 561 million litres, much more than the average use of 440 million litres per day in 2019. Auckland’s water storage levels at the Hūnua and Waitākere Ranges was sitting at 72 per cent full – less than the average of 83 per cent typical for the time of year.
  
  And Watercare said it wasn’t hugely concerned by the falling stocks, but asked people to cut their shower times to four minutes. Wow.
  
  By February 15, Auckland had broken another record after experiencing 40 consecutive days with no rain, succeeding the record of 39 days set in 2013.
  
  And Watercare, moving with the speed and urgency of an arthritic tortoise, FINALLY started imposing restrictions in May – a good five to six months after any home-owner on tank water could have told them the blindingly obvious.
  
  Oh, but they did take one action before that – they sent notices out to people like me ON TANK WATER telling them how to conserve water (as if we didn’t know) and snippily reminding us that they (Watercare) weren’t responsible for supplying our water. Gee, thanks for pointing that out.
  
  Watercare are useless.
