A mother says she’s reluctant to give her 11 year old the CV19 vaccine.

Sweetie, the vaccine is only approved for over 16. He’s not getting it anyway.

      It’s because the Pharma’s start with clinical trials in adults, and then only when those have been successful do they move on to clinical trials in children, pregnant women etc. So there is a delay in getting trial results and drug approvals for those other demographic groups.

      I wouldn’t have thought the cohort for Maori and Pacific Islanders was large either, which will/should be problematic for Medsafe.

  Imagine not even being able to import a classic car in 2032. Will there be no motorsport? How about tractors? Fishing boats? Nah, everything will be electric mate. Even those planes that our MPs fly around in. Just don’t you worry about driving anything on the road that requires petrol.

      Where in the draft report does it refer to these exemptions? In my first look through it I did not see any. What I did see was New Zealand referred to by that name once in the first 20 pages, and Aotearoa used 53 times in the same 20 pages. There is a lot of ideological grandstanding going on in this report. What it doesn’t contain, despite James Shaw’s claims otherwise, is very much evidence to back up the ideological positions taken and even less calculation of the economic impacts. I await with interest any reactions from opposition parties.

        I was fortunate to be born in New Zealand, and am proud and happy to have lived my life so far in this special country.
        
        There is no no logical or convincing reason that I can see to change the formal name of our country to Aotearoa, an objective that some persistent protagonists seem determined to achieve. To remove future uncertainty about how our homeland should be named in formal documents and communications, our Government should include a general referendum on the subject at the time of NZ’s next General Election, due to be held by January 2024.

    The world is moving on this issue. Boris Johnson has banned the import or manufacture of petrol and diesel cars from 2030. GM has said they won’t build petrol cars after 2030. So it is hardly a dastardly left wing plot to move to EV’s.
    
    National has to appeal to newer generations, and look ahead to 2030.
    
    The big issue for National is the livestock issue. National won’t agree to the 15% reduction. It is particularly stupid to impose such a limit, particularly given that New Zealand has the lowest level of emission per kg in the world. New Zealand, right at the moment is utterly dependent on agricultural exports, probably at the highest percentage of total exports for the last 40 years. I imagine Grant Robertson is well aware of this fact.

National should be arguing for what’s right, not playing the Women’s Day/The Project game that John Key and Jacinda Ardern have specialised in. It’s incredible how weak National have become.         The point about Boris Johnson is that the move to EV’s is world wide. New Zealand, irrespective of the government, will not be standing apart from that. Of course you will still be able to buy second hand ICE vehicles beyond 2030, so you will get your fix out till around 2050.
        
        However, I am looking ahead at my next vehicle, and the one after that. Probably a Plug In Hybrid around 2023 to replace my existing 2018 diesel and a full EV sometime post 2025. I reckon with 700k range.

      The world market for dairy is fixed. So every tonne of dairy product not produced in NZ will simply be produced somewhere else most likely Nth America or Europe.
      Removing 15% from the national herd will make no difference at all to global ruminant emissions.
      However if farmers are forced to reduce numbers then they will probably feed more supplements to increase per cow production and the make up the the difference. There will be unintended consequences.

        Thompy, on Country Calender I think it was, I saw some type of feed a farmer was growing for his stock that was reducing emissions – so we might see some herd sizes able to increase and premiums from such stock products also grow.
        Kiwi farmers have always been among the most innovative and that hasn’t stopped.

      “The world” is fully capable of falling in love with mad ideas, doesn’t mean we have to follow them.
      Properly accounted for there is no benefit economically of environmentally in going electric over petrol/diesel. The most environmentally friendly option ( LPG or nat gas directly powered vehicles) doesn’t appear to have been properly considered at all. Perhaps it would show up one of the previous mad ideas – completely shutting down gas exploration.

      The solution for New Zealand is hybrid vehicles that use both electric and fossil fuels. This will soften the impact on our primary industries who face challenges complying with reductions in herd numbers and also in farm management.

        Having two engines, one of which is redundant at all times, is energy-inefficient in terms of production, uses more energy to move it around (two motors plus batteries for one is a lot heavier than one motor) and doesn’t solve either problem.

      NZ farmers have 1% of the world’s ruminants. Ruminants apparently produce 15% of the planet’s methane emissions. Methane is claimed to be responsible for 15% of the one degree of warming so far.
      
      Even if you believe Methane at 18 parts per million in the atmosphere can do any warming (it is easy to prove it cant) then removing 15% of NZ’s livestock willl result in 15% of 1% of 15% of 15% of one degree.
      
      Thats 0.00003375 of a degree. Unbelievably bizarre.

If Cindy was really serious she would have ordered them to use second hand Nissan Leaf imports from Japan. https://www.theregister.com/2021/01/29/eu_commission_vaccine_contract_redaction_fail/ so the EU released a redacted version of a contract, and made a mistake in the redaction that allowed the full text to be read. Turns out they were trying to force AstraZeneca to provide all their manufactured vaccine to the EU before providing any to England (keeping in mind the vaccine in question was developed at Oxford and they partnered with AstraZeneca to be able to handle the capacity).
This includes all the vaccine manufactured in England (one clause says: for this specific clause relating only to manufacturing, England is considered part of the EU, and is not considered part of the EU for distribution). This would have been in breach of the contracts already in place with England.

  The EU also backtracked on export controls on its vaccines entering Northern Ireland in a bid to prevent the region becoming a backdoor for jabs to be sent to the UK mainland. Would have been a hard border, described by Northern Ireland First Minister Arlene Foster as “an absolutely incredible act of hostility”.

      The Poms built MASSIVE chillers on the South bank of the Thames (Vauxhall) to store the European butter so they could still buy NZ/Australian butter to sell in their supermarkets.
      ie buying twice as much as they needed, keeping our exports alive.

Am I the only person that thinks bringing in 570 contract foreigners to “save” 400 Kiwi jobs is a bad deal?

The deep sea fishing industry is mainly Maori owned (Sealord etc). Half the point of that was to improve Maori employment. But some how each NZ job needs almost 2 foreigners to make it work.

What happened to the myth of Maui the awesome fisherman? What happened to the Polynesians (including Maori) being these amazing seafarers? Why do we need Russians for our fishing fleets?

“Sealord chief executive Doug Paulin said the industry has had issues attracting New Zealand workers for many years. He said many other jobs rated higher in young people’s priorities.”

Yeah no shit. Work is for losers. With the dole and a few side hussles why go out to sea?

“Some in the industry aged 23 to 25 were already buying homes, he said.”
Own your own home? You gotta be mad when you can just get government houses.

Yet another industry being killed by welfare.

And the fruit picking stuff is not much different.

  Welfare reform is essential or we’ll just continue the downward slide. But I don’t agree with refusing to let workers in just because we are holding out hope of welfare changes that neither major party supports and could take decades to have an effect.

    Part of that welfare reform has to be to allow a higher threhold than $80 before tax, before someone is taxed/benefit abatement of 70%. Why this level has never been lifted beggars belief. This level was the same in the late 90s when the minimum wage was $7.08. Now a person attempting to transition into full-time work can only work about 4 hours before there is negligible net benefit.
    
    If welfare reform is simply code for ‘make the lazy bastards work’ I think it’s unhelpful. If it’s about incentivising people to work, then absolutely. On this allowedly right-wing blog saying anything supportive of the poor is, I know, deeply offensive but maybe thinking about solutions that work might be best, rather than ones that fit an ideological world view.
    
    We might also match welfare reform with tax system reform, so that capital gains beneficiaries stop getting a free ride.

      I’m generally center, center-right on most things but on welfare I agree that ‘make the bastards work’ isn’t working. Obviously this will be down-ticked as it isn’t a ‘hang the buggers’ post!
      I like a lot of the work English, Bennet and Joyce were implementing prior to the 2017 election – targeted data driven approaches would have seen huge structural changes to this country but nope, ‘hugz + feelz’ it was.
      As an example, I had experience working with prisoners in the ‘working prisons’ scheme – was doing housing refurbs for the old HNZ. I absolutely believe in the old adage of do the crime, do the time (and feel we should be harder at sentencing tbh), but it’s pointless locking them up and waiting for them to re-offend and rinse and repeat. Working prisons is brilliant – it tries to break the cycle and often succeeds. The HNZ refurbs was a bloody brilliant scheme – get them hooked on work before they get out, targeted support as they get out to integrate them back into society (and a fair few getting recommends from the tradie instructors) and the re-offending rate plummets. I wish we could get more of this kind of joined-up mature thinking from National rather than the labour-lite we are currently getting. I often wonder how much better our country would be if that old codger had swallowed his pride in 2017 and backed National – or more of the ‘keep them honest’ idiots had remembered his form!

        In the 1960″s I too had experience with prisoners in the workforce. I lived near a justice prison facility where the selected inmates were bussed to local businesses for work. Over the years I employed many. Being employed and trusted was something they appreciated. The employers were not seen as guards and the inmates earned enough money to set themselves up for the first few weeks after release. The community was also supportive. It was a win win situation

    You are correct in that there is no easy solution and whatever solution is found will not be happening anytime soon but, do we ever run out of workers overseas who are desperate enough to travel halfway around the world for a job.
    
    We are pouring millions into the Cook Islands, don’t they have unemployed that can come here and work? What about Nuie or Tokelau, places that exist because NZ taxpayers fund them almost 100%.
    
    I worked, very briefly, in the employment service many years ago and the “lazy bugga” problem existed even then but at least we had penalties in place. Now, the “lazy buggas” rule the roost it seems.

      As an example of how restorative justice might work, she cited the beheading of the John Ballance statue in Moutoa Gardens in 1994, but did not mention that her son was the offender.
      
      Mark Turia said last month that he would smash the statue again if it was replaced. He was sentenced to three months in prison for wilful damage after refusing to serve a sentence of periodic detention.

  Otherwise there would be practical seamanship schools, preferably in the East Coast of the North Island or whever Maori unemployment is high.
  
  As I understand it only recently, and very modestly, have deep-sea fishing vocation programmes begun at secondary school level.
  
  Did you ever see a television ad. aimed at young New Zealanders, and more finely aimed at young Maori, about the good money and the adventurous life of deep-sea fishing?
  
  As for fruit picking, sticking with cheap Asian labour will ultimately price many New Zealand orchardists out of the world market.
  
  Orchards that will survive and thrive will be like the German-owned T&G Global (it originated as an NZ co-op). Its Hawkes Bay orchards are co-operating in robot-picker technology with a Californian firm, Abundant Robotics, which is part-owned by T&G Global’s German parent firm.
  
  At present, the focus on robots in Hawkes Bay is picking at high tree levels, which contain most of the fruit.
  
  So they are starting by complementing the human pickers. That’s typical of the way robotics is introduced in industry.

The fire, which also featured on the TV3 News, was certainly all engulfing.
Points I found interesting was one, the extremely thick black smoke which was like a smaller version of the Rangiora tyre heap inferno.
Secondly, that the blaze was so extremely intense.
How much of this is due to the types of materials used in building modern homes.
Do we pay enough attention to the products we buy to enhance our lifestyles.

I’m just back from a couple of weeks holiday (which was very enjoyable), not looking forward to starting work again tomorrow (today being Auckland Anniversary Day).

However whilst away I was staying at a series of NZ government owned facilities (no it was not a department of corrections or police cell!!!) that had the following policy clearly articulated in writing and reinforced by staff at verbal briefings held every night.

1) Do not give free handouts to the locals under any circumstances. It may seem kind but it is very damaging to the locals.

2) The consequences of giving free handouts to the locals is that they become dependent on receiving these gifts.

3) Furthermore a consequence of the free handouts is that the locals no longer teach their young how to support themselves independently.

4) Additionally another unfortunate consequence of the free handouts is that the locals no longer have to spend their days in productive activities. They consequentially then begin to engage in destructive and anti-social activities.

The policy seems to be working in the areas I visited. Three of the locals I was fortunate enough to meet gave a spectacular display and appeared healthy and energetic.

For those of you who are wondering the government facility was a series of huts in the south island high country. The locals were the resident Kea population.

Given that Kea are the most intelligent bird in the world, the DOC policy is food for thought with respect to unintended consequences of welfare.

BTW many thanks to “Rodney” the Kea (identified by his tag bands) and his two mates (unidentified) for the spectacular aerobatic display.

Just heard Rod Carr on Morning Report regarding Climate Commission report … he truly believes the closure of Tiwai Point aluminium smelter will free up electricity for the North Island (to power EV’s and to compensate for the culling of gas use).

Some thoughts in response … despite this costing hundreds of millions (probably be billions in the end) to build new transmission lines and related infrastructure! But are they crazy, what about “resilience”, there seems to be many articles of late of the South Island Alpine fault-line rupturing due to a major earthquake (that apparently is overdue based on past timelines), so when that happens expect power outages in the North Island for months and months? But no worries thank goodness for the Huntly Coal Powerstation, that’ll supply emergency power, right? Buzzzz – wrong! The muppets also want to close Huntly down!

And then they want to cull the gas industry? No way! More gas expansion please and No way should NZ close down its gas industry when no other country is also being so stupid to do so! Gas gives us self-reliance! And what about the gas burners heating hospitals, schools and industries? Where are the billions coming from to convert to other forms of energy?

Please National and ACT – close this nonsense down and reassure the people and industry that under them, they will put NZ first by ensuring that any changes will not occur ahead of other countries, will not occur until alternative energy sources are affordable and will not disadvantage NZ’s competitiveness and productivity.

  Judith Curry: Well, I think natural gas can do anything that coal is doing. So natural gas is a much cleaner transitional option. You need one or the other in the near term. When the wind isn’t blowing and the sun isn’t shining, you can’t fire up a nuclear power plant, turn it on and off. Having wind and solar in the mix really means you do need coal or natural gas because you can switch it on or off. So the more wind and solar you add, the more reliant you’re going to be on gas. Regarding battery storage, until we get new storage technology, there isn’t enough lithium in the world for all that storage. Rethinking and re-engineering the grid could also better redistribute wind and solar generated energy.

    Wind and Solar don’t generate sufficient energy for its own transmission over distance. In other words, they may power a small nearby town providing the wind is blowing within a narrow speed range and the sun is radiating sufficient heat.

God, every time I think something Jacinda says is as stupid as it gets she comes out with something worse. Has she wondered about where the power will come from when about 3 million cars are plugged into the power grid each night? What if there is a major power cut? Will people be able to get to work? Has she wondered what will become of all the cars currently in NZ which will then be forbidden? Man, she takes virtue signalling to the nth degree. It says much about NZers that they voted for her. I am so ashamed of them.

  I have often wondered when an electric vehicle owner needs to travel some distance. Maybe charge part way through the trip and later stops the night with friends or family. Asks to use the charging port in the friends system and fill up. This charge may cost the house holder $30 or $40. Friendship would be tested if it happened regularly.

Why has Labour forgotten their 50% support came from people voting tactically for them to NOT have the Greens in power?

So here we have Jimmy Shaw and his band of merry fools wanting further economic upheaval, higher energy costs (as NZ is forced to import energy to make up for shortfalls) and the shutting down of industries costing thousands of jobs and livelihoods. All approved by a smiling Jacinda (who is in the wrong party, she should have been in the Greens).

Expect this to be Labour’s last term in power for quite a while (since they are disregarding the message from the middle/swing voters that put Labour over the line and into power).

And all National and Act need to do is ramp up messaging such as:

Vote Labour/Greens = they want to take your cars away!

Vote Labour/Greens = they want you to use bicycles instead of cars!

Vote Labour/Greens for higher energy costs, blackouts, and third world poverty!

  They talk as though what we do in NZ will affect only that part of the atmosphere above NZ: that we can alter and control our temperature independently of the rest of the world, that OUR air can be made cleaner, that OUR waters can be purified.
  Never do they talk in terms of global action, they never dare mention China or India and what those countries do every day to the earth’s air and water.
  I have never heard James Shaw mention ocean currents, or air currents, or prevailing winds.
  Nor does he ever acknowledge the impact of natural events such as the continual eruptions of Icelandic, Hawaiian and Indonesian volcanoes.

Note this was from a poster sufficiently politically aware to insert Maori language macrons on the relevant letters in an English-language coment.

It raises the question: has there been any thorough, probing discussion anywhere of the white purge of Oranga Tamariki?

This has been one of the most interesting Maori wins since Gate Pa, yet where is the discussion? What are the positions of the Opposition political parties? Are they frightened to open their mouths?

    Maggy, it reminds me of the Christmas wish lists my sister and I wrote as children. We didn’t hold back in our requests for princess palaces, fairy carriages and abilities to astral travel, all the while expecting the latest board game or something needed for school.
    
    Alarmingly, under this wish-list, my new house, completed Christmas 2019, will be illegal in only 4 years. I will not be able to cook or have hot water. One imagines this will be true for most of the new houses built recently in NZ. I want to laugh but something tells me it’s not a joke.

ACT just sent out a letter apparently this bill does away with a lot more than LPG, ‘The report recommends that Government ban petrol cars, gas heating and gas cookers. Ban coal from industry, reduce the number of farm animals by 15 per cent, and make people live in higher density housing (but also build it from wood because cement production is very energy intensive)’. Also ACT says they were the only party who didn’t vote for it! By 2025 we hope this government will be gone.

  Most of this stuff will simply never happen. They promised a billion native trees last time, and deliverered next to nothing. If they manage a few trees this time, that will probably be the extent of what they will actually do.
  
  NZ is already carbon neutral so the whole thing is pointless. We have massive forests to offset carbon emmissions but we cannot (apparently) count them because they were not planted after 1989. We can only count new forests.
  
  Not sure of the percentage of houses built each year, but the rule says no gas in new homes after 2025, so if we replace 1% of housing stock per year (as an example), gas cooking in homes is not going to disappear for decades, and you can be sure of an exemption of restaurants and all sorts of other things.
  
  Your BBQ won’t disappear either, but, I would like to see everyone that goes camping with their electric BBQ plugged into their Teslas, that would be very amusing to watch. Have they not also considered that many people use our great walks and outdoors, and there are hardly any DOC huts that have power, so you must use gas, or, are we all going to carry around massive big batteries in our packs that we won’t be able to charge up…..
  
  Picking on the dairy industry won’t help either. NZ industry is much more efficient than anywhere else, so if we reduce production, someone else will produce more, and it will produce more so called environmental damage so we will be causing a problem rather than solving one using this idiotic thinking.

The good news around Covid is that all around the world, infections are dropping like a stone. The UK, Spain, India have all dropped 30-50%, in the US, the average number of cases is 30% lower than a week ago. Of course, the experts are rushing in to keep people afraid, but the reality is that for most of the Northern Hemisphere, this virus appears to have run its course, particularly with summer on the way.
Here, on the other hand, we have no infections and therefore no prospect of herd immunity, and our govenment seems happy to stand back and invite others to go first. Siouxsie Wiles in Stuff also supports some form of social contract so healthy young people in rich countries are not getting vaccinated in preference to older, unhealthy people in poorer countries.
New Zealand has the third highest obesity rate in the OECD. Diabetes is three times more likely to occur in Maori and Pasifika populations than in Pakeha. South Asians also have high rates of diabetes.
One in six New Zealanders have respiratory illness. Maori and Pasifika are 2-3 times more likely to be hospitalised for respiratory illness than other groups in the population.
Close to 20% of the population is over 65.
The point is this. We have a much greater vulnerability than almost any other country apart from Australia. If the border cannot be guaranteed to be utterly impregnable, this virus will get out, and will get out again. Why are our politicians sitting back and watching? Why is Ardern not getting Pharmac to move above snail’s pace? Complacency, New Zealand’s greatest character trait, could be leading us to ruin, socially and economically.

      HIV test? No, they don’t test for HIV after, or for antibodies. I wasn’t in a trial group, just one of the early phases. You wait 15 minutes after, unless you’ve reacted to a vaccine in the past, in which you wait 30 minutes. Similar to a flu shot.
      
      The CDC does online check-ins on how you’re feeling. There is no isolation required, but I did choose to take a sick day out after my second shot due to feeling lousy. First shot left me a little groggy, but not enough to effect my work performance.
      
      For Moderna, the trial found it is 50% effective after 28 days, which is when the second shot is administered, and 95% is reached two weeks after that second shot. Idk if they have updated data since the trial.

  We’re still in lock down and new case counts in Ontario are still nearly 2,000/day. Down from post-Christmas 4.000/day but still a long way from zero. We got a token amount of vaccine for long-term care

What is generally regarded as our local council here in Wanganui without an “h”, has been spending rate money on non core activities for years. Most always run at a loss but the egos’ must be stroked so they barge ahead. Finally one of the worst is going belly up and the local “newspaper” ran a front page article exhorting “local leaders” to do their best to save it. from debt, bankruptcy and loss. This non core activity is a flying school which the council bought when it was going helly up . Yup, they knew that.
Since then the council has also bought two large local building, a mtor inn and a religious retreat to house the students .
Now because of Covid, the school is running short of pupils, most of whom are overseas students and we are told that the school wants to bring in 80 students from India, one of the hottest of the Covid areas.

In view of the total absence of the most simplest example of common sense, words fail me.

  They bought an existing flying school in Feilding that had good contacts into India and a steady stream of students. They built a hangar and upgraded the aircraft inventory to deal with projected increases in student numbers.
  
  I think the idea was to get some more utilisation of the airport. So far so good. They did it properly – bought a motel etc to house the students etc etc
  
  Then along came covid.

If you want to know how frequent use of words, phrases and lies work, just do a find [Ctrl f] on this page and see how many times the word Aotearoa is used in lieu of NZ or New Zealand.
Similarly, the phrase Climate Change is now used in most MSM-produced stuff as a lead item.
Then there are the lies. Hardly a day goes by without some if not all MSM outlets propagating lies about Cindy’s magnificence.
All these actions have an influence on our kids/grandkids, their conversations, comprehension and attitudes.

I heard James Shaw being interviewed on NewsTalkZB this morning about the new climate report, and Mike Yardly asked him the question about what we’re going to do with all of these batteries that have a limited lifespan and can’t be recycled? Shaw basically said it was early days and that by the time it rolled around he hoped that a solution would be found.

Mike: let me just run through a few sources of concern which I know are triggering a lot of discussion […] When the rubber hits the road here James, what the hell are we going to do with all these batteries? People are struggling to get an answer that is satisfactory on that.

Shaw: Well, it’s because it is a very new technology and here in New Zealand we do not yet have means for recycling of batteries. The good news is it’s at least 10 years before the battery in a vehicle gets to the end of its life and in the last term of govt we did set up a product stewardship scheme to manage that. So, I’m pretty confident that as with most new technologies that we will be able to find ways of reprocessing and recycling.

In other words, it’s all based on wishful thinking. Let’s just start the programme now and hope that a solution is found in the future to the massive problem it presents. It’s par-for-the-course for greens and other liberals though. Pushing through policy that sounds nice but which is not practical ion the real world. They are dreaming. And it will kill our economy.

  It’s a non-issue. A dead EV battery will have $1000’s in valuable metals (Lithium, Cobalt, Nickel, Manganese, Copper, even Steel and Aluminium) in highly concentrated form sitting inside it which there will be no shortage of enterprises interested in recycling for profit. But aside from that end of life EV batteries that are still functional will be put into peoples houses to provide backup power and allow them to go off grid more cheaply.

What is the point of using money raised through taxes to subsidise electric vehicles? Someone on a low to middle income who can’t afford a $50,000 EV will not be able to afford a $45,000 EV either. All such a scheme does is provide a subsidy from people in South Auckland to people in wealthy areas who would buy an EV anyway. People in South Auckland spend $5,000 to $10,000 on a car and they are not getting an EV for that money.

This is what the Climate Change Commission says:

“The main challenge currently is the upfront cost of purchasing an electric vehicle, which is more expensive than the internal combustion engine equivalents. For example, the cheapest new electric vehicles on the market in Aotearoa cost around $50,000. Owning an electric vehicle today is challenging for those living in areas of high s ocial deprivation and those on a lower income. Lower socioeconomic groups may not prioritise such a purchase. For people for whom access to electric vehicles will be challenging, good access to public transport is particularly important. New Zealanders living in areas rated high on the deprivation index would benefit from investment to improved public transport, particularly in areas such as West and South Auckland.”

A couple of years back, my partner’s mum nearly got sucked in by a Nigerian Prince, who was very very keen to marry her.
All she had to do was deposit 80k into his lawyers Trust account, and that would free up the release USD 18mill to Ma’s nominated bank for safekeeping. She’d then receive First Class air tickets to Lagos for the wedding.
