A hilarious book
June 12th, 2011 at 7:00 am by David FarrarBob McCoskrie blogs:
Family First NZ is calling on bookstores to ban the sale of an offensive book entitled “Go the F*** to Sleep” by Adam Mansbach.
My general rule of thumb is that anything Bob wants to ban, is probably worth seeing
By chance, someone has sent me a copy of the book and it is hilarious. Here are some of the lines:
The cats nestle close to their kittens now.
The lambs have laid down with the sheep.
You’re cozy and warm in your bed, my dear.
Please go the fuck to sleep. The windows are dark in the town, child.
The whales huddle down in the deep.
I’ll read you one very last book if you swear
You’ll go the fuck to sleep. The eagles who soar through the sky are at rest
And the creatures who crawl, run, and creep.
I know you’re not thirsty. That’s bullshit. Stop lying.
Lie the fuck down, my darling, and sleep. The wind whispers soft through the grass, hon.
The field mice, they make not a peep.
It’s been thirty-eight minutes already.
Jesus Christ, what the fuck? Go to sleep.
This is going to make such a great Christmas present to my friends who have small kids.
The Wikipedia article on the book is interesting:
When Adam Mansbach’s daughter Vivien was two, she would take up to two hours to fall asleep. Exhausted and exasperated, one night Mansbach posted a note on Facebook, “Look out for my forthcoming children’s book, Go the — to Sleep”. Following his post, friends of Mansbach responded enthusiastically, so that Mansbach began writing what was then only a hypothetical book.
What a great way for a book to happen.
Go the Fuck to Sleep was subject to an unintended viral marketing campaign after PDF copies of the book, presumably from advance copies sent to booksellers, were distributed via email. While the book was originally scheduled for release in October 2011, by the end of April the book had hit #2 on Amazon.com‘s bestseller list
It’s interesting that in this case, illegal electronic copies of the book led to it bcoming a best seller.
You can pre-order the book from Fishpond. On sale 16 June.

I know of a book that gets promoted to children that is full of stories of rape, murder, incest, torture, drunken parties and all sorts of violence. Perhaps McCroskie should arrange for the Bible to be banned as well?

I saw this book on-line in pdf form about 3-4 weeks ago, and nearly wept with laughter. As a father of 2, I can recommend it to any new parent as a healthy dose of realism during a time when all about you are going “awwwwww, how sweet”.

I think Bob needs to be careful that he doesn’t end up as a modern day Patrica Bartlett. Jeremy Corbett said it clearly “he needs to relax for once”.

I think the writer of this book should be thanking Bob McCoskrie for his promotion!
Fundies never learn.

If all that Bob McCoskrie has to complain and write about is this “offensive” [his word] book, then his priorities are totally wrong.
Perhaps he should concentrate on the real issues relating to families – starting with working out how to stop the sickening bashing of our kids by so called “family’ members. McCoskrie focusing on that will be a good start.

Just wondering how would he ban it when people could get it at half price from overseas

Banning is such a stunning success whenever it is tried as a solution.
Vote:Prohibition of alcohol in the US in the 20/30s is probably the greatest example of that.
Sheesh, ignore the lessons of history at your peril.
McCroskery does some great work but Patricia Bartlet as a predecessor?, take a time out Bob and give your ego a snifter of gin and bitters or maybe just wipe your chin.

Bob,
I find you offensive,, who the fuck are you to try and tell me (us) what I can and cannot read.

perhaps Bob should investigate the Streisand effect (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streisand_effect) before he makes any more public statements

I had an idea to setup a bogus Family/Morals organisation and then get paid by PR people to send out press releases calling for their clients to be banned. Perhaps some extra services like a picket could be available.
For all I know Family First is in fact using this business model.

Bob McCoskrie is typical of those who live in a dark cupboard with a candle & a Bible for company. His opinions should be read as those not of a family man but those of a raving religious lunatic.

Christopher Robin (Milne) said he resented what he saw as his father’s exploitation of his childhood and hated the books that had thrust him into the public eye.

…about inspiring a book saying “small kids are a nuisance and Dad wished I’d shut up”?
(too late to add the edit)

Bob is right.
Most parents are complete idiots, and will probably read it to their small children thinking it’s completely appropriate.
Or else they will find in its pages the approval they need to beat and abuse their children even more.
Thank goodness we have Bob McCockhead here to do our thinking for us!

kowtow – please don’t ever have kids.
It would be a shame to pass your humourlessness on to the next generation…

Yea, because no one noticed it until Bob spoke up. Oh wait, TV3 did a story days ago.
