2012 MP of the Year
As much as I hate to say this: Russel Norman.
Not because he is correct, or even vaguely good for NZ in a position of real power, but because he has done an excellent job of keeping the Greens and his own profile up with the electorate as a whole. Along with Turei, he has managed the Greens caucus effectively [exceptionally would be an overstatement IMO]
2012 Labour MP of the Year
Rajan Prasad. Often underestimated by the MSM and the public, the leadership survey in the sidebar shows that Kiwiblog pundits appreciate his talent and leadership qualities. And he achieves this without upsetting his colleagues and being demoted to the backbench [possibly through the cunning strategy of being right at the back to begin with.]
2012 National MP of the Year
John Key. The man is masterful. Even when pundits think he makes mistakes, the electorate think differently.
2012 Minor Party MP of the Year
Russel Norman – as above
2012 Press Gallery Journalist of the Year
Give them all a drink next week to celebrate.
2012 Public Servant of the Year
Unquestionably this goes to Mikenmild. Not only does he devote his day to protecting us poor
Vote:sapscitizens from ourselves and to ensure that our lives are suitably regimented for us by the ever-loving, ever-present, omniscient, beneficent State, but he also somehow finds time to enlighten us here constantly with his insights and musings into… well, everything really.December 5th, 2012 at 3:22 pm
DPF, what would be better, instead of having people vote on these, would be you simply announcing the winners and giving your reasons.
Vote:December 5th, 2012 at 3:27 pm
Hottest MP of the year- Julie Anne Genter
Well, is there any point in any of the others???
Vote:December 5th, 2012 at 3:33 pm
2012 MP of the Year – Russel Norman
Russel Norman has by far been the most effective Opposition Party Leader and has struck a perfect balance in articulating a new Green vision for this country and holding the current Government to account.
2012 Labour MP of the Year – Jacinda Ardern
Jacinda has largely kept out of the public eye of the leadership woes, which is an achievement for someone who is an obvious future leader of Labour. She has instead used her time to take on Paula Bennet head to head and show Labour is a true opposition on social issues.
2012 National MP of the Year – Paul Hutchinson
Paul caught the hearts of most on the left when he supported marriage equality and then again the following week supported to keep the alcohol purchase age. He was actively engaged and genuinely undecided on both issues, these would be seen outside of his normal views, these votes brought out the best in an otherwise quiet MP.
2012 Minor Party MP of the Year – Julie-Anne Genter
Julie is smart and articulate. She is effective and engaging, her efforts as a new MP haven’t gone unnoticed.

2012 MP of the Year…………Russel Norman
For exactly the same reasons as outlined by bhudson @ 3.16pm
2012 Labour MP of the Year…………Chris Hipkins
For getting under Hekia Parata’s skin and having a few direct hits. Let himself down with his nasty comments about Cunliffe recently, however.
2012 National MP of the Year…………Tony Ryall
Continues to be a star during question time and has made health (the portfolio that no one wanted) into something looking like a dream job
2012 Minor Party MP of the Year……………Winston Peters
Always enetretaining. Also gets a few hits in during question time and for showing up the rort that is Whanau Ora
Not to sure about the other two nominations.
Vote:Now please can I do my nominations for the worst? Pleeeeeeasssseeee.

2012 MP of the Year: Tony Ryall – he quietly gets things done
Vote:2012 Labour MP of the Year: David Shearer (only because of the total lack of talent in the party)
2012 National MP of the Year: Tony Ryall
2012 Minor Party MP of the Year: Russell Norman – and opposition MP of the year
2012 Press Gallery Journalist of the Year: Patrick Gower
December 5th, 2012 at 4:24 pm
2012 MP of the Year – Tony Ryall. Rarely seems to have put a wrong foot forwards and seems to run a pretty tight ship in his area of influence.
2012 Labour MP of the Year – I’m gonna go with Chris Hipkins, as much as his slightly sanctimonious look and tone of voice grate, he has been extremely effective at getting in at issues (about the only person in the Labour Camp who has done this). I almost put him as MP of the year.
2012 National MP of the Year – Gerry Brownlee, purely for that sledge with the famous North Haverbrook monorail, was genius.
2012 Minor Party MP of the Year – Russel Norman, for reasons well spelled out by other comments already about his ability to change the perception of the Green party. I don’t follow the policy but respect what he has achieved here.

» 2012 MP of the Year
Russel Norman – like him or not he’s done an incredible job of getting the issues out there and raising the profile of his party.
» 2012 Labour MP of the Year
Cunliffe – he’s an effective communicator, your opposition MP stats show he’s by far the hardest working and highest profile opposition MP not in a leadership role. Plus he’s kept things interesting in Labour – the party may be a bit divided but at least they are having meaningful conversations about direction and values and they’ve pushed through some serious democratic changes as a result of all this. The leadership drama’s are largely blamed on him, but the reality is that it’s about people not having confidence in Shearer – if it wasn’t Cunliffe everybody would be looking at Robertson and making stories out of his ambitions.
» 2012 National MP of the Year
Chris Finlayson – he’s been a quiet achiever and has managed to make big progress on some Treaty Settlements (which will actually have some historical significance well beyond the daily back and forth of issues).
» 2012 Minor Party MP of the Year
I think this probably goes to a Green MP as well – I agree with some of the above posters that Julie Ann Genter has made a big impact for a complete newbie. However, I’d probably give it to Kevin Hague – he’s played a key role in Pike River as a West Coaster, scored some good hits on the government over the shambles at ACC and engaged constructively with the government over marriage equality and updating our adoption laws rather than just grandstanding like some Labour MP’s have done.
» 2012 Press Gallery Journalist of the Year
I always read Armstrong, he’s more balanced than some and occasionally has a different perspective.
» 2012 Public Servant of the Year
Vote:I’m not sure if board members count – but I’d say Paula Rebstock – love her or hate her she’s been a thought leader on a range of major government reforms in savings, welfare, health – you name it…
December 5th, 2012 at 5:37 pm
None.

2012 MP of the Year – Tony Ryall, Health is no longer the free political hit it has been for 30 years.
Vote:2012 Labour MP of the Year – Chris Hipkins
2012 National MP of the Year – Assuming non cabinet, Jami-Lee Ross. Otherwise John Key.
2012 Minor Party MP of the Year – Hone Harawira (Loathe him, but he punches well above his weight)
2012 Press Gallery Journalist of the Year – Paddy Gower, everyone thinks he’s biased against them so must be doing his job.
2012 Public Servant of the Year – Fran Mold’s partner (not sure if I can put his name here.) Just about cost David Shearer his leadership.
December 5th, 2012 at 6:53 pm
MP of the Year Stephen Joyce
Vote:labour Mp Chris Hipkins
National Mp Tony Ryall
Minor Party Mp Peter Dunne
Journalist – Armstrong
Public Servant Commissioner of Environment for pointing out the scientific safety of fracking
December 5th, 2012 at 7:32 pm
MP of the year – Tony Ryall. Totally on top of his portfolio – as shown by last week when for the first time in ages he had a PQ on health. Used to be a daily occurrence under previous administrations.
Vote:Labour MP – destroys the hapless Parata just about every day in the house.
National MP – Michael Woodhouse – always on top of his game. Why he’s not in cabinet instead of Parata/Foss/Wilkinson is beyond me
Minor party MP – Julie Ann Genter – for non political reasons. I find her strangely alluring.
Journalist – Colin James. Assuming he qualifies – always impresses me on the Nation with his considered non hysterical observations or any political column which he writes.
Public servant – Bollard/Wheeler for refusing to listen to these idiots (Norman/Parker) who think by dropping the OCR by a couple of points the dollar will suddenly plummet.
December 5th, 2012 at 7:55 pm
Oops that should read Chris Hipkins as labour mp of the year
Vote:December 5th, 2012 at 7:56 pm
2012 MP of the Year – Russel Norman
Vote:2012 Labour MP of the Year – David Cunliffe
2012 National MP of the Year – Tony Ryall
2012 Minor Party MP of the Year – Winston Peters
December 5th, 2012 at 8:36 pm
2012 MP of the Year – John Key. The man just keeps fronting up to everything. Though really tested this year more than any prior year, he has real staying power, and an amazing leader for his team. Very very impressive.
2012 Labour MP of the Year – David Cunliffe. The man has the skills to be leader or a heavyweight No. 2 as Cullen was to Clark. He needs to regain his place on the front bench. Runner Up – Jacinda Ardern. Shearer should keeps his friends close and his enemies closer. Make Labour a meritocracy and they will collectively see its fortunes rise.
2012 National MP of the Year – Tony Ryall. Heath is off the political radar. Many other good choices to choose from though (anyone but Parata), making National a great team with serious talent on offer and the best party of choice to govern NZ Inc in 2012 and going forward.
2012 Minor Party MP of the Year – Russell Norman. He often fronts for the Left on the telly, and really must be scaring Labour silly. Needs to bring his party more centrist on balancing Environment and Economy.
2012 Journalist – Fran O’Sullivan. Good insight, critique of all, and healthy common sense/ realism. Avoids sensationalism.
Vote:December 5th, 2012 at 10:42 pm
2012 MP of the Year – Lockwood Smith
Vote:2012 Labour MP of the Year – Chris Hipkins
2012 National MP of the Year – Jonathan Coleman
2012 Minor Party MP of the Year – Julie-Ann Genter
2012 Press Gallery Journalist of the Year – Brent Edwards
2012 Public Servant of the Year – Paul McGill, Fire Service
December 6th, 2012 at 2:16 am
MP of the Year – David Cunliffe
Vote:Labour MP of the Year – David Cunliffe
National MP of the Year – Chris Finlayson (Judith Collins would have got it had she already decided against compensation for David Bain)
Minor party MP of the Year – Tariana Turia
Public Servant of the Year – John Allen – whoever can give themselves a $40,000 payrise to lead an underperforming department – while cutting jobs – and not attract any criticism – deserves it!
December 6th, 2012 at 2:33 am
Oh – and Journo of the Year? Matty Mclean – for his wonderful submission to parliament on the gay marriage bill.
Vote:December 6th, 2012 at 4:30 am

2012 Press Gallery Journalist of the Year
Tina Wickcliffe.
2012 Public Servant of the Year
Vote:Joris De Bres.
December 6th, 2012 at 7:35 am
Since there were no criteria specified, I am doing it based on actual valuable contributions to the country, not on being successful at playing the game of politics.
2012 MP of the Year
Chris Finlayson
2012 Labour MP of the Year
Louisa Wall. The standard is low but at least she did something I agree with.
2012 National MP of the Year
Chris Finlayson
2012 Minor Party MP of the Year
Catherine Delahunty, for frequently reminding us what nutjobs the Greens are.
2012 Press Gallery Journalist of the Year
Duncan Garner, for improving journalism by switching to a job where he is actually supposed to be providing opinion, not news.
2012 Public Servant of the Year
Vote:Peter Jackson, because I refuse to accept that the state sector serve the public and the private sector do not. If David meant to say ‘state sector employee’ then it would be Roger Sutton.
December 6th, 2012 at 7:39 am
@ Jack McDonald at 4:30 am:
Would you mind explaining your reasoning behind that?
Vote:December 6th, 2012 at 7:43 am
@Nigel Kearney, I agree with your Line-up. It is exactly how I would line the MP’s up. Perfect. O:-)
Vote:December 6th, 2012 at 10:20 pm
@DPF,
Just a small reminder that the Public Servant of the Year award had not received many nominations. In fact I don’t think a single person has received more than a lone endorsement.
Accordingly, I think it only proper that you bow to general popular interaction – there is little for any of them – and plump for mikenmild the doyen of the public service commentariat here on Kiwiblog.
Come on, you know you want to…
Vote:December 7th, 2012 at 12:55 am
@graham I guess it’s more for his role over the last few years not just 2012 but I think he has been excellent at challenging racism and discrimination in the media and the public realm.
Vote:December 7th, 2012 at 7:32 am
@Jack McDonald,
You mean like Hone Harawira’s white mo’fo’s comment?
Vote:December 7th, 2012 at 7:36 am
I’m still going with the fire service chappie who demonstrated some rare integrity the other day with a frank apology for his service’s shortcomings. I think public servant of the year should be someone we can all applaud, and de Bres is simply in too divisive a role where whatever he does will leave fairly sizeable minorities outraged.
Vote:December 7th, 2012 at 7:56 am
I second bhudson’s motion: comrade mike&mild, true doyenne of the public service, deserves the award hands down.
