  These are not permanent decision making positions.
  
  These are just people – who you trust – helping set up meetings, organise stuff and get the transition in place.
  
  Given how even half og GOP have sabotaged Trump’s efforts, it makes a lot os sense to pull in his family who he has worked with.

    Indeed. And as the President-elect needs executive skills they can rely on, they often go to members of the campaign team – some of whom they do later bring into their executive. Nixon did it with Mitchell, Haldeman and Ehrlichman in 1968…fateful choices given what happened when a bunch of Cubans broke into the DNC in 1972 😉
    
    With our Westminster system we sometimes overlook the US President is an 18th Century elected monarch – albeit one with constitutional checks and balances. “I serve at the pleasure of the President” is the determining factor on whether you have a job.
    
    And Trump counts as the biggest Washington-outsider since Jimmy Carter – who was at least a Democrat and so had some initial sympathy in overwhelmingly-Democrat DC. As Trump relies on his family in business, I wouldn’t be surprised if his daughter ends up as his chief-of-staff.

    I should also add that Democrats and the political left-wing just loooooove the idea of an activist, even “Imperial” presidency when it is guys like JFK, LBJ or Obama issuing executive orders.

    Trump is basically an independent, rather than a Republican. He spent much of the latter part of the campaign skirmishing with the Republican Party. it wouldn’t surprise if even now he can’t easily tap into the full Party machine.

      Yes, I’ve come to the conclusion that is the best way to assess him.
      
      Eisenhower, while also a nominal Republican was in effect an Independent (the Democrats at one stage were trying to recruit him as their 1952 candidate). He never bothered to support the party or Republican candidates for congress. Often relied on his vice-President, Nixon, to do the running around to organise the necessary party support. Pence may be delegated to do the same.
      
      And Ike had a successful Presidency, one that is even better in retrospect.

The right place at the right time. Our man for all reasons and seasons Prime Minister of NZ John Key has taken charge of the devastating destruction left after the 7.5 massive earthquake to places like Kaikoura. There he was in the middle of the destruction assessing the damage in Kaikoura area.,and talking to the most affected, reassuring them that complete help, and assisstance was on its way.NZ has been most fortunate to have such a dedicated PM and such a caring person as well. Talk about “Johnny” on the spot,there will never be such an appropiate saying,or adage.

      I did have to chuckle at all your downticks. Given the number of “Righties” on this blog threatening to vote for Winston next year to “send JK a message”, I’d have expected more support on that front.
      
      It’s very weird: why can’t it be acknowledged that JK has proven to be far superior to his opposition as a political leader – while at the same time acknowledging that part of that success has been a failure to take on tough, meaningful fights that, if won, would do the country a lot of good.
      
      Incidently, given that you were gone from KB for several years, having had a gutsful of much of the tone and “debate”, what’s brought you back here?

        I think I hereby give up permanently on this country’s “centre right”, I can see the Left has won the culture war, we have had Helen Clark, terms 4, 5 and 6 anyway. The “political wilderness” syndrome Labour is in, is just a clever tactical gambit. They don’t need to be in office anyway.
        
        Appreciate your lonely support, Tom Hunter. Your clarity is a rare thing these days. I suspect some of the others I used to know, have also stopped bothering.

      What was Key supposed to do? He can do only what he can get a Parliamentary majority to agree to, and Parliament has consistently blocked every Government attempt to reform the planning laws. You can thank Peter Dunne and the voters of Northland for that.

Not trying to be dismal or alarmist – but remember the pattern of Christchurch.

Significant quake during the early morning, that did significant damage but the timing was fortunate for human life.

Wake-up call.

Few months later…..?

Has policy making in Wellington, especially the urban planning, EVER really responsibly considered the disaster resilience? In fact the turn the urban planning has taken in more recent times, there is a certain misanthropy to it, the planet must be saved from evil humans, therefore they must not be allowed new affordable suburbs, but must be concentrated in chicken-coop and borg cube housing right on fault lines and in the path of Tsunamis.

Not to mention the Kafka-esque lack of road space, so that even a 3am Tsunami warning causes gridlock on arterial roads. Of course the proles should catch a train to safety.

Sad about those affected by the Earthquake. I wish them well.
I assume we will now hear via the media the wailes and bitching from those who are attempting to get as much as they can from EQC – the real villains.
When will EQC revert to what it used to do which was to say to the householders get a builder and we will pay them direct up to the statutory $100,000 limit. It is up to the property owners to take responsibility with their Insurance Company for excess of the statutory limits.
EQC are not responsible for employing builders – they have a policy of indemnification – eg pay for repairs – none of this stupidity following Christchurch of becoming a builder.
Who changed the rules over this ?
Treasury I expect – political expediency.
Who is going to pay for the uninsured buildings ?
Are we the taxpayers going to find that we are going to take over those costs again ?
Infrastructure, I am happy to subsidised the Councils for this – this a Council/Government responsibility.

Many leaders around the world phoned JK to offer NZ assistance after the earthquake, including an attempt by Donald Trump to reach the PM. Perhaps he will try phoning John again today?

It is good to hear from JK that NZ is in a good financial position so was able to decline the kind offer from world leaders for their offered assistance.

    NZ might have the finances to pay the $b’s of dollars for repairing the earthquake damage, but there is an amazing amount of roading infrastructure to repair.
    
    Is it possible NZ could accept international assistance in rebuilding our roading infrastructure so our transport industry can get moving as soon as possible?
    
    On the otherhand, NZ companies do have plenty of experience rebuilding our roads, and there will be plenty of money to be made in the process.

A couple of months ago there was a proposal released publicly that has been under investigation since 2010. The proposal is to establish a ferry link between Whanganui and Motueka; check this out:

A bold plan to start up a ferry service between Whanganui and Motueka could make make major savings in both time and money for those needing an inter-island link.

Whanganui businessman Neville Johnson set up Midwest Ferries in October 2010, and has been investigating a roll-on, roll-off ferry service for the past six years.

He told the Chronicle that recent discussions with major industries shifting freight between both islands had confirmed for him that a service was viable.

He reckons a start-up fund of $50 million would make it happen. That would cover the dredging, land reclamation, vessel leasing, infrastructure, costs of employing 20 shore staff and administration costs.

Moving inter-island freight is an expensive business but Mr Johnson said his investigations showed that a Whanganui-Motueka link would cut hours off trucking times which, in turn, meant financial savings for companies.

While the Whanganui ferry link has been flagged before, he has taken a different approach.

“No one had gone to the marketplace – the transport industry especially – to assess their interest in a shipping service through Whanganui to the South Island,” Mr Johnson said.

Using the Whanganui District Council-owned port at Castlecliff would not need any ratepayer contribution, he said. In broad terms his idea is to dredge seven metres depth in the port and through the harbour entrance.

The southern terminal would be through Motueka’s waterfront, and the same issues would need to be overcome there – creating a serviceable depth in that port and reclaiming much needed land behind the wharf to handle the vehicles coming on and off the ferry.

It’s very early days yet with this proposal, but the Government has already committed to a proposal to upgrade of Whanganui’s port precinct, so the timing of the ferry proposal in advantageous. And the events of the last 36 hours have shown that the freight route across Cook Strait and along the east coast of the South Island is vulnerable.

This could well be a visionary idea for which the time has come as a result of yesterday’s massive earthquake. It certainly merits further investigation.

    Much less viable simpleton1; to get to the port of New Plymouth is a much longer sea journey around Cape Egmont. From Whanganui however, it’s a direct route across to Motueka

      It would bear investigation, to consider New Plymouth as perhaps other points for and against may be thought of. Even to be an emergency port in certain storms.
      I am aware the New Plymouth is not a perfect port either with the surge and tides.
      
      Yes a bit further to get around the Cape Egmont, and still further on the journey for some, if the destination is more north.
      
      Wanganui would always be a bar harbour, which at some times, with certain weather conditions could be dangerous, even if dredged out.
      
      If using a bar harbour is ok as boats would be not be drawing a great depth, then Manakau Harbour also be ok.
      My preference is to then head down the largest channel in the Manukau and establish a green fields port of one of the peninsulas down towards Waiuku way, where still reasonably deep water. (Not suitable for large deep draft ocean going vessels)

      The Manakau/Waiuku Port idea is a step too far.
      I did wonder a bit about it a few years ago, when protests about petroleum, lpg, gas, etc. tank farms in Auckland as those products could be shipped in by coastal vessels (designed with a shallow draft) that can negotiate bar harbours.
      A tank farm would then be safer being further away from a population, and safety zoning would prohibit a residency build up.

  KS I assume the truckers would go down the coast and then over to ChCH and Dunedin etc. I haven’t been down that way for a long time but will those roads cope with all the trucks ? It should be boom for tourists ( camper vans etc.)
  Also would the Wanaganui river mouth require continuous dredging like in the old days ?
  I’m not being negative , just curious —like you I think it is well worth further investigation.

    I’m sure some ongoing dredging would be required Ross, but that would all be factored in to the overall cost. Q-West Boatbuilders has just signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Whanganui District Council to be the anchor tenant of the redeveloped port precinct, and there have been several very well attended public forums over the port revitalisation as a whole. The timing for Midwest Ferries could not be more advantageous; at the Whanganui end, at least.

  The Wanganui part I understand but why on planet Earth would you have Motueka as the other terminal? As Nelson/Golden Bay has no rail & crappy road access it may be seen as a captive, if limited, market.

    Why not Wanganui/Lyttelton? That’s a route that makes no sense nasska. The whole aim of this plan is to REDUCE travelling time, especially for the road transport industry. Whanganui/Lyttleton would be a 12-hours plus journey, with the added complication of traversing east to west or west to east via Cook Strait.
    
    It’s my understanding that this proposal is designed to have road traffic head down the West Coast then through the Lewis Pass and Springs Junction. From there, it’s a pretty straightforward run (earthquakes excepted) on to Christchurch.

      My point is that once a freight vehicle is loaded onto a RORO ship there are not a lot of additional costs. The only figure I can find for sea distance from Wanganui to Wellington is 82 nautical miles which a modern ship should cover in 4 – 5 hours, maybe less. Wgtn/Chch is 165 nm so the whole journey could be covered as an overnight service.
      
      It’s certainly not my sphere of expertise but it could be worth costing the proposal in the light of the massive outlay involved in restoring the Kaikoura railway.

      From Motueka you’d be headed down the “back” road through to Tapawera and Golden Downs to Highway 6, then Murchison, left onto Highway 65 to Springs Junction and then Lewis Pass and out to Culverden and Highway 1.
      
      Nowhere near the West Coast unless you were diverted (as you probably would be now) to Arthur’s Pass. Also a hell of a lot longer route and not one particularly suited to Trucks though it could work.
      
      The Port of Mouteka is hardly equipped to take anything bigger than a large launch as of now, can’t see it easily (or cheaply) upgraded. It’s shallow, with tight entrance and quite unsuitable for a large craft. Only good side is that it isn’t a particularly active entrance so if dredged out it would probably need less maintenance dredging. Plus a much longer sea trip that most people are happy to get over and done with anyway, Cook Strait is particularly bad, but the Tasman is hardly any better.
      
      Have to say it looks like complete pie in the sky stuff to me. Might address a small local market I suppose.

  Its a bit of pie in the sky. Tourists and local passangers wont make it viable they will need FRIEGHT! Whanganui is not the easist place to get to, not on main trunk line and roadways north a bit windy and narrow. I however wish them luck but hope that once again Ratepayers will not be stuck with paying for another of councils grandiose ideas.

      Geonet like to use terms like “20km east of Seddon”. In reality they are right under the proposed Clifford Bay terminal. If that terminal had actually been built it’d be toast today.

    It’s not a council proposal VicParking. Midwest Ferries is a private company, and the shareholders would be seeking private investment capital. And Johnson has already consulted the trucking industry:
    
    He said a Whanganui-Motueka ferry would work because it cuts hours of travel time for transport companies.
    
    “We’re looking at a ferry 135 metres and drawing about 5.5 metres. You’d get a maximum of 40 truck and trailer units on a vessel that big.”
    
    But it’s not just trucks. Midwest Ferries would target campervans, cars and passenger fares.
    
    “We reckon 28,000 crossings a year makes it viable. A crossing in this instance is one vehicle going one way.”
    
    Six years ago Mr Johnson canvassed the transport industry (he was secretary of the Road Transport Engineers Institute for some time) and said the response was overwhelming.
    
    “On the basis of that work we had 42,000 indicative crossings from about 80 transport industry operators.”
    
    A Whanganui link cuts four hours off travel time for trucks going from Auckland to Christchurch, over Cook Strait through Wellington and Picton.
    
    “The saving that brings for the industry is massive – and this is before we looking seriously at tourist buses, campervans and the like, attracting vehicles down State Highway 4 rather than State Highway 1.”

  Great idea but I believe it should bypass Motueka and go to Lyttelton.
  
  The coast road south of Kaikoura will take many years to replace / repair and will eventually finish up as a first class scenic highway.
  
  I have driven along there 100s of times pre earthquake and although scenic it’s a right bastard with its tight corners etc….
  
  Not suitable for truck/trailers.

Looks like the inland route from Kaikoura to Culverden will be ready for action by the weekend.
Perhaps the long term (and cheaper) solution is to progressively upgrade this road over the next 3-4 years and turn it into SH1. Abandon the wrecked coastal road south of Kaikoura (and maybe the railway line as well).

    It all comes down to two things:
    
    A) What you need.
    
    We don’t have the traffic volumes to justify a multi-lane highway. Besides, those multilane highways don’t work so well when choked with all that traffic. Try the 101 between Silicon Valley and San Francisco at rush hour 5 lanes each way of traffic jam!
    
    B) What you’re prepared to pay for.
    
    Japan and California have over 10 times the population of NZ. That’s 10 times more pockets to tax to pay for roads. Are you willing to pay 200% tax to get freeways we don’t need.
    
    Oh, btw, those multilane freeways also get broken by earthquakes….

  Not a silly idea, but a hell of a commitment. Maybe we should start further North though and go up the Awatere Valley from Seddon via Molesworth and eventually Jolies Pass to Hamner. The Inland route still uses the coastal route to Kaikoura and that’s just as bad (or worse) than the road South of Kaikoura.
  
  Be an even bigger task though; a lot is fairly open and not high value land. There’s the small pass between the Awatere and Acheron Rivers to cross, then the much harder Jolies Pass (or use the alternative Clarence Valley Road).

  (1) there are no easy terrain options for a road from Picton to Christchurch. All the options will have to contend with chokepoints at some stage.
  
  (2) there are no easy seismic options for a road from Picton to Christchurch. All the options will cross multiple fault lines.
  
  (3) building a wholly new road isn’t affordable.

  First we had 1st and 2nd wave feminism that was about “empowering women”, telling them to sleep around and never settle down to have children.

I see the sad effects of this now as tired old childless hags in their late 30’s who, not wanting a man whilst they were in the prime of their life, missed the boat and now live lifes of bitter resentment – 99% supporting radical leftwing views as they support the system that so destroyed them.
  
  Then we had 3rd wave feminism with it’s pushing of “rape culture” (Remember Pete George on here!), trying to scare off females from normal teenage behaviour so that all (particularly white) males are viewed as wannabe rapists.
  
  This fourth-wave feminism though that has arrived is the most destructive with its message that Whites are evil and that White women should “Shut the fuck up” because they are “oppressors”.

    Alex, thank you;. I’d forgotten that the fleet’s in town (for the RNZN’s 75th Anniversary)- and of that fleet only one specific vessel is worthy of SJW attention. A certain navel vessel belonging to the United States of America, USS Sampson. Presumably because the ships owner has nuclear weapons.
    
    We are of course assured by Penelope that she is an ‘equal opportunity ‘ protester, and because of that we can reasonably expect a large protest to be mounted in front of the CNS Yang Cheng, since China is also an ‘owner’ of nuclear weapons.
    
    At least, that is what SHOULD be happening (in the interests of ‘fairness’) but, as we know, it won’t be.
    
    Which raises an interesting point IMHO.
    
    Since it is really bad form to protest against one of your own, by not doing-so does that mean that our supposedly ‘independent’ Penelope get her orders from Bejing….?
    
    And if she does, will they pay her rates?

      Recently, in Australia, Labor senator Sam Dastyari (a self-styled corporate corruption crusader – a bit like Penny) was found to have engaged in questionable practices himself.
      
      Mr Dastyari asked a company with links to the Chinese Government to pay a $1,670.82 bill. That revelation was bad enough. But then we learnt that other Chinese-linked companies had assisted Mr Dastyari with his personal expenses, including legal bills and entertainment and travel costs.
      
      Things became even more farcical when Labor Leader Bill Shorten said what Mr Dastyari did was ok. “I am prepared however to give him a second chance because I think he can make a contribution to this country”.

The news media generally ran with the government’s shrieking denunciations of Hager, and kept repeating the line that “ordinary people” don’t care about “Beltway” issues.
        
        Such behaviour by the perpetrators and their corporate media yes-men is to be expected, of course. But what really saved the Key regime from the consequences of these embarrassing revelations was that the Labour Party refused to accept the gift it had been given, insisted that the revelations of massive government criminality were “a distraction from the real issues”, and lined up with the government to heap ridicule and abuse on Nicky Hager and Kim Dotcom.

law—and Guyon Espiner says nothing at all, merely snickers.

We’ve seen before how the lack of serious reading and its consequence, a lack of knowledge, by RNZ hosts like Kathryn Ryan, John Campbell, Jesse Mulligan and Bryan Crump too often leaves them prey to clever political spin and to guests who are sometimes nasty, cynical, or fanatical—and often all three at the same time.

Just as concerning, though, is the seeming lack of any professional discrimination by the Morning Report team. Susie Ferguson seems just as susceptible as her predecessors (like Geoff Robinson or, in a best-forgotten spell in the early ’90s, the notoriously ill informed Mike Hosking) to swallowing and regurgitating wholesale any political spin coming out of Whitehall or Washington, D.C. And, as horribly demonstrated in the following interview with Dan Whitehead, her colleague Guyon Espiner is not much better.

This morning Espiner devoted three minutes to discussing the latest moves against publisher and journalist Julian Assange, who has been the object of U.K. and government fury ever since he released evidence of U.S. forces murdering Iraqi civilians, as well as the even more damaging release of government files revealing massive criminal enterprises perpetrated by the U.S. and U.K. against not only nameless and unheeded Pakistanis, Iraqis and Yemenis but against the citizens of their own countries. It will come as no surprise to anyone to learn that neither Guyon Espiner nor Dan Whitehead even so much as mentioned the “Collateral Murder” video or any of the other state crimes Assange has revealed to the world.

The truly terrifying passage starts from the 2:14 mark on the tape. Dan Whitehead, without betraying the slightest sign that he understands the enormity of what he is saying, suggests that the U.K. government might bestow on itself “extra powers to go inside the Embassy and bring him out.” If the U.K. government, no doubt being hectored and bullied by the State Department, actually bowed to this pressure and took such a step, that would be a grave, unprecedented violation of the right to political asylum, leading to predictable consequences all over the world. That someone, even a cynical British radio flack, could say such a thing without a second thought is worrying enough, but even worse was the fact that Guyon Espiner did not react at all. Instead, all he had to offer was a “philosophical” little snicker/snort and an anodyne signing-off comment.

GUYON ESPINER: Well let’s head overseas now, and after more than four YEARS holed up in the Ecuadorian embassy in London, Julian Assange has been QUESTIONED by a Swedish PROSECUTOR over RAPE allegations, the Australian founder of WikiLeaks has DENIED the claim, he insists these claims are politically motivated, of course. Dan Whitehead is our correspondent in London. Dan, good morning to YOU. What do we KNOW about, errrr, how this process is playing out?

DAN WHITEHEAD: Well very LITTLE, to be HONEST, I’ve spoken to the Swedish prosecution office, errrrr, this afternoon here in the U.K., and they have said they will be refusing to give a running commentary on the investigation as it continues. What we DO know is that the Deputy Chief Prosecutor of Sweden attended the Ecuadorian embassy behind Harrod’s, in Knightsbrige, here in London where Julian Assange has BEEN for more than four years now, she was in there for FOUR YEARS. Quite a convoluted legalese process which went under WEIIIGHHHH. Questions which were pre-arranged were ASKED to Julian Assange by a, an Ecuadorian, uh, official. Uh, there was opportunities for the Swedish, uh, prosecutor as well as a police representative to interject with follow-up questions but no NEW questions DURING these four hours. Uh, three days have been set aside here in London for the questioning, we DON’T know whether that, those days will be used, or whether the questioning has indeed, uh, been ended. Errrrm, but as it stands at the MOMENT, Julian Assange remains INSIDE the Ecuadorian Embassy, he is of course FIGHTING that extradition order over fears that he will be, uh, sent to the U.S.

GUYON ESPINER: And what happens after those, uh, three DAYS?

DAN WHITEHEAD: Well the Swedish authorities will review the evidence, errr, the ANSWERS which Julian Assange GIVES will be given to the Prosecution Office in Stockholm in a WRITTEN form. It is then up to the prosecutors in Sweden to see whether or not they have enough EVIDENCE, errr, to press those charges, and then we’re in another legal GREY AREA which really [snorts ruefully] has been the sign of this entire SAGA over the last four years, because it all depends on whether or not Ecuador then HAS to give UP, uh, its political ASYLUM, uh, so that he is sent to Sweden, or whether or not the U.K. gets extra powers, um, to i-indeed go inside the Embassy and bring him out. If this case is DROPPED, errr, which IS likely, which is not unlikely but is a POSSIBILITY, given that the other THREE charges against him were dropped last year—the prosecutors ran out of time—if this case is dropped it’s not the end of the ROAAAAD for Assange, he can’t simply walk OUTSIDE of the embassy here in London because heeeee, uh, the U.K. authorities could STILL arrest him, uh, because he BROKE BAIL, uh, his bail conditions during this extradition request from Sweden when he went INSIDE the Ecuadorian Embassy in the FIRST place. So the U.K. au-, police still have the authority to ARREST him under THAT charge of breaking BAIL conditions. So this saga looks set to continue.

  The real issue here is these buildings were built under the new and improved building Code —drum roll & Tui Ad.
  Meanwhile other older buildings around town that have been there for 50-100 years have had red stickers put on them by the so called expert “inspectors” and owners are left in limbo because they cannot afford to bring them up to the hopeless Code and they cannot sell because no one else wants to have the hassle.
  As a side effect all the rest of us have to pay higher insurance premiums to pay for the stuff ups of the “experts” —or the insurance companies use it as a convenient excuse to rip us off.

    For Wellingtonians this damage to buildings on the reclaimed area should come as no surprise, except to wonder why it hasn’t happened before. As was proven in Christchurch, reclaimed land invariably reacts badly in earthquakes and while it could be excusable for earlier constructions (even as far inland as Lambton Quay) to say that the information didn’t exist, for the likes of Te Papa etc it was studiously ignored and we were assured that in the event of an earthquake there would be no damage. The Stats Dept building proves otherwise. It will be interestign to see what happens after the mess has been cleaned up; no doubt the WCC will deny all and any responsibility – then gouge the building owners for repairs. Ive finally given up on the failing newspapers online version. They have stuffed so many banner adverts on the main page it takes an age to load. This is evan though I have 100mps fibre. Every time you want to watch a new video (20 seconds long) they stuff a one minute advert in front of it.
There print version is going down the drain and now they are making a major attempt to send their online version the same way.
