Australian Labour

It is almost inevitable that John Howard will be re-elected to a fifth term (would require a huge swing to over-turn his majority) but Australian Labour seem keen to give him a sixth also.

Mark Latham is going to be rolled soon, and Julia Gillard is starting to count the numbers.

Gillard is a member of the left faction, and Australian Labour will not win by going more to the left. If she did get the leadership, the Labour Right would never support her and just undermine her from within.

There hasn’t been a leader from the Labour left since the disaster known as Gough Whitlam in the 1970s.

Don’t expect a John Howard retirement anytime soon. Poor Peter Costello.
