Voting ACT

Cathy Odgers has a post on why she is voting ACT, despite the possibility it is a wasted vote. It has started a spirited debate on her blog.

They believe in:

* smaller government
* less tax – citizens will spend the extra money which will attract GST, go to other wages and services and encourage growth, so the tax take is still adequate.
* tougher sentencing on hard crime
* having a credible defence force
* allowing parents to decide the school for their kids
* done a great job holding the government to account

and I’m going to vote ACT just so they know there are people out there who support them.

If Labour get in this time, it will be the last time for a long time, so they need to know there are ACT supporters out there.

Too Right

I commented over at Cathy’s last night.

To cover it again: I will be two ticks ACT. My reasons
1. ACT’s policies are the only real hope NZ will break out of its doom spiral of bigger government, increased isolation and a reducing average IQ as the good get up and go
2. My electorate tick will hopefully get Rodney over the line – helping assure the ACT party vote is not redistributed.
3. The top echelon of ACT are streets ahead of the bottom dwellers of National or any other party – which is where a redistributed vote gets placed.

eg Imagine National gets to form a Government.
National 41% Lab 40% Act 1 seat and 4% NZF 7% and Maori 5 seats. There would be an overhang of 1 seat.

The parliament would have 52 National – List cutoff Chris Tremain – NPE. and the top five ACT candidates – Hide, Newman, Shirley, Franks and Graham Scott get home. With 52 Nats + 5 Act National lead Govt has 57 cf to Lab/Maori at 55. maybe Winnie is on the cross benches support as you go….

Act will vote for sensible National policies. Everyone on the right is happy.

Or say, National still only gets 41% but ACT don’t get Rodney home. The (re)distribution is no ACT MP’s and National get two more home – Mita Harris New Lynn and Mike Leddy Rimutaka. Well known, familiar big contributors to the national debate? Not. These two candidates are no comparison for any of the top ACT people.

Also with the redistribution Lab/Maori are on 58 vs Nat 54 – National then absolutely dependent on Winnie’s choices.

This is therefore a no brainer – If you are in Epsom electorate you vote for Rodney. Remember for what its worth, Worth gets home as he is 16 on the Nat list…

Even if you give your electorate vote to National (or labour for that matter) – and why would you for the reasons outlined by Cathy) you still vote for Rodney…cannot be simpler.

Finally, sad to see people are choosing to vote for who they think will win! Sad, sad, sad.

Or if all bar 1% of Act’s ‘normal’ vote goes to National (on the sad and misguided logic of voting for a ‘winner’ -unlikely), National will only get get another 2 no names home. Still no simple majority though. Still in Winnie’s hands and no heavy weight right sided support in the House.

To say it is a wasted vote means nothing.

Prior to MMP there were two parties, National and Labour. If you voted for example NZ First under the “wasted vote” logic, then you would never vote for them as they had no show of getting 50%. Plenty of people then “wasted their vote”.

The whole “wasted vote” logic is flawed and is merely a catch phrase used by National and Labour, the two main parties in an attempt to wrestle control from the minor parties again.

I am sure even Green Party members will agree with my comments here.

I would consider giving my vote to National or Labour in this election a true “wasted vote”. Moreso that I would have to be “wasted” to tick the box for more of the same the I know they are both capable of delivering.
