Ha ha ha, fantastic. Good to see the Australians have some balls. The cringing left can thank themselves for this little riot. The passivity of the police and the establishment have forced them into vigilantiism. As for racism, its hardly surprising given that the Lebs are viciously racist themselves (Anyone remember the gang rapes of a couple of years ago?) Their attacks are all racially motivated, so its not surprising that the reaction is also racist, of course no one ever criticises the Lebs for that, oh no, its whitey who is expected to cop a beating or a rape and take the blame for it because of their race.

This demonstration might actually do something to curb Leb aggression and intimidation. Contrast the reaction to that of France, if the government had just increased their benefits and promised them preferential job treatment, I doubt there would have been any subsequent decrease in the numbers of Leb attacks.

Chances are of coure, that a bunch of Lebs will turn up next week with guns and shoot the place up…they are serious motherf*ckers.

These people were welcomed into Australia as refugees from a war zone. Within one generation they have started to emulate Beirut in Western Sydney. It is well known that these youths will randomly attack “white” Australia’s.

Good on the local residents for putting their foot down. These “Lebs” have no respect for the police, but I bet they are running scared now.

johnie do some research. There are gangs of lebanese kids in Sydney. They are gang rapes, into theft (ever heard the phrase “we are going to fuck you leb style”?)and extortion and all the other fun things that low lifes get up to. They add the muslim touch which means mistreating women is perfectly acceptable.

Last weekend one of these groups invaded a beach, beat up the lifeguards and harassed ordinary people. Is this OK? Is it especially OK because they are a muslim minority? Do muslim minorities get a free pass because of their ethnic status?

As it happens I think the revenge was bloody stupid, and it has backfired, as around 100 cars seem to have been vandalised by the same groups of lebanese “youth” in a tit-for-tat revenge attack.

What this has done is highlighted that there is an issue that the bleeding heart liberals can’t wish away.

Interesting how the police are appalled by the Aussie reaction, but not the lebanese provocation isnt it?

There is no excuse for rasist attacks. This includes majorities and minorities. What certain groups in society are able to get away with because of liberal lefties like Johnie is unbelievable.

Look how the white trash at McQuarie Feilds were dealt with. Full riot police and multiple arrests.

Yet ethnic gangs can roam the streets with almost total immunity to prosecution.

Interesting how the police are appalled by the Aussie reaction, but not the lebanese provocation isnt it?

That might be because the police have already made arrests related to last weekend’s attack. And because this was mob violence on a scale that dwarfed what happened last weekend. Among the highlights:

– A young woman beaten and kicked on the ground for the colour of her skin.

– A young man asaking the crowd to stop and then leaving, pouring blood, after being bottled.

– An ambulance crew attacked by the mob.

– A mob descending on a local hotel in pursuit of a Middle Eastern man, chanting “string him up”

– Chaos on a train as two men doing no more than trying to get away were attacked by thugs

There are hundreds of thousands of people of Middle Eastern heritage going about their lives in Sydney. The idea that they should be randomly attacked as payback for the actions of a small number of hangsters is reprehensible. I’m genuinely shocked by what has already been said in this thread.

From the Daily Telegraph article on last weekends life guard assaults . . .

Police will allege that as the three lifesavers were walking from the beach to the boardwalk about 3pm four Middle Eastern youths began yelling at them in Arabic. The lifesavers said to the the youths: “What are you looking at?”

The Middle Eastern youths allegedly told the lifesavers to get off the beach and that they “owned” the beach.

The lifesavers allegedly responded by telling the youths that if they went in the surf, they would need rescuing because they could not swim.

Strong coarse language was allegedly used by both groups. The taunt about swimming turned the aggression physical, with the four youths bashing the lifesavers and another eight to 10 Middle Eastern males joining them, police will allege.

Attacking people because of their supposed ethnic background is just dandy? no matter if they have committed any crime or not, simply being from a particular spot on the globe is enough to justify this sort of violence? That is what the loony right postings above seems to think.

Fights over “the beaches” between different groups of youths have been happening in Sydney long before the wave of Lebanese migration.

Has anyone bothered to ask the Aboriginies what they think about other groups claiming they “own” the beaches yet?

I have never lived in Sydney though did spend a couple of years in Cairns – had nothing like this up there.
I guess this could be framed in that the Lebanese in that beachside area were oppressing other ethnic groups, particularly the “Anglos”. The Anglos erupted out of frustration at the abuse they had suffered from the “Lebs”. While I don’t condone the reaction, it is understandable due to the oppression they suffered.
This is an argument the left use all the time, so I guess it can be used here.

Sometimes, especially when in dinner party debate with my more erudite right wing friends (old school urban/rural tories most of them, its all about conservatism with a small “c” and noblisse oblige from the ruling elite), I wonder if maybe the difference between right and left is just the tools used to achieve the same outcome only with slightly different emphasis.

Then I come to place like this, and read the virulant racism and not so crypto-fascism of the National Front dick heads like anti hippy and I realise that that you judge a person by the company they keep – and I remember thats why I stay away from the right.

Oh bugger it, no one bit – perhaps I was too subtle.

The gang I referred to is the Bra Boys, the white surfie gang that organised yesterday’s “protest”. They’re well known for violence (30 police officers were injured in a confrontation with them in December 2002) and rape, and have a nice little line in assaulting Asian shopkeepers.

You may consider this useful context for further discussion. Alternatively you can carry on with the unthinking racist blather.

What’s “nasty, mindless and racist” about pointing out that violence perpetrated by individuals of Lebanese origin and is a significant problem in Sydney, particularly in the southern and western suburbs? Maybe we should all just be “nice” and pretend that it never happens?

The violence which occurred at Cronulla yesterday was a direct result of the lack of willingness by the NSW government, and by consequence the police over a long period of time to actually do something about it “Oh no, we can’t criticise the Lebs for forming gangs, intimidating people at beaches, racially motivated attacks including aggravated assaults and gang rapes targeted at “white” people, that would be racist. Lets abuse and vilify the people who complain about it instead”

The official statistics indicate that the rate of crime committed by immigrants of Lebanese origin peaked in the mid-90s at around two and a half times the rate of the non-immigrant population.

Around the same time, there was also a peak (about double the rate of non-immigrant Australians) in crimes committed by another immigrant group: New Zealanders.

Should I report for a salutory beating the next time I get off the plane in Sydney? Or would that be different??

I find it amusing that people expect me to be keeping track of every thread every few hours. I do actually go offline from time to time.

Both sides involved with the violence are pretty much as bad as each other I would say. And I never subscribe to groupist thinking where you judge someone off their group identities rather than as an individual.

Most of you seem to have forgotten what this really was – a mindless rampage by beer-fuelled yobbos out looking for a rumble on a hot weekend. Most of those who took part wouldn’t understand the issues surrounding racial tensions in urban communities if you locked them away for a month with a sociologist. Any target would have done. It’s little different in origins and execution from the thuggery that now plagues so many sporting codes. As long as people are in some way different from one another, there’ll be some idiot out there with a headful of alcohol and a grudge, looking to muster a mob and cause trouble. There is NO EXCUSE for this sort of behaviour – ever.

I’m pretty surprised it happened. I know ozzies are overtly a bit more racist than I’m used to experiencing here, but I thought it was mostly just bluster.

I think in most cases it still is, but I don’t think that’s one of the good things about Oz, or that it shows any more balls. Attacking people because of their ethnicity is not courageous behaviour, whether it’s Lebanese doing it, or ‘Skippies’. That such a thing happened indicates a failing of Sydney society all round. I think most ozzies will be shocked and sickened by what happened.

More violence will not solve this problem.

For what it’s worth (as I was clearly being facetious above) the riots were shocking and grossly racist. Just as racist as Lebanese gangs raping white women (choosing whites deliberately – read the court transcripts of that wellknown rape case) and calling them “white pigs” whilst doing so.

It’s easy once you get the hang of it. So long as you start from the position that every action taken by an ethnic minority (so long as he/she is brown – not some nasty Eastern European or SE Asian) must be the fault of someone else.

Give it a try. It’s very liberating.

Well there’s a lot of everyone throwing blame here and I would like to sugest that people take some time to backtrack events ove the last couple of years.

It is clear that this didn’t happen in a vucuum and there is a serious problem.

Simply saying that this was a one off bunch of yobbo’s isnb’t going to make it go away.

Ther has to be a soultion and I would sugest that a strong police presence combined with a zero tolerance policy applied to all without fear or favor would be a start.

This method was applied vigorusly in Singapore where race riots were afternoon entertainment during the 50’s and 60’s.

The rule is you start trouble you get pounded. Trouble ceased.

The blame game can be played till hell freezes over with a nil result.

PS: Serious question: the ghastly series of rapes in 2000-2001 were overwhelming committed by one vicious gang of Lebanese/Muslim youths who were subsequently brought to justice. Does anyone have actual data on what has happened since? In other words, to what extent can the claims – which in no event anyway justify random racial attacks in revenge – be backed up with eveidence?

Or do you feel sick that your country of origin is now ruled by the majority, ie: the Bleck Borstards? If I’m wrong, then maybe you have an idea how it feels to be a kid of Middle Eastern origin, born in Australia, but abused as a “Leb” by drunken thugs, as some kids were at Cronulla. All it took was a name, or a dark skin, to be a target. Australia is a nation of immigrants, many of whose ancestors arrived in chains and some of whom later hunted aborigines for sport. What does it take to be a “real Aussie” these days? Do you have to look like Shane Warne or Kylie Minogue? Or have a name like Barry McKenzie?

Let me see if I can summarise what I’ve just read here from the guys who seem to be in support of the ‘white backlash’:

Because some Lebanese are violent and thuggish, it’s okay for the local whites to retaliate, even though that retaliation was directed seemingly at random towards anyone who looked of Lebanese extraction.

I don’t think any of those coming from the Left have condoned the violent actions of by far the minority of Lebanese. But it seems those on the Right ignore the causes (i.e. – inherent racism, poverty, lack of assimilation…) in favour of the more easily resorted to response of merely suppressing the violent symptoms – which means the problems don’t get solved and the violence just gets repeated.

No-one – Left or Right – should condone violence like this by any group. I don’t read anyone condoning it from the Left but I do on the Right. The irony of calling for the Middel (sic) Eastern community to take responsibility for their yobbos while making allowances for whites to behave in the same way is missed by those making those allowances.

The “passivity of the police and the Establishment” caused by the Left; “the whites have been forced into vigilantiism” (sic) – it’s okay for whites to be racist since the ‘Lebs’ are anyway (crap logic by the way) – it’s not really that well thought out, is it? Shallow reactionary kneejerk, cousin marrying, no teeth redneck racism.

I think it’s probably very relevant to point out that conservatives have been in power in Australia for a lo-o-ong time. And they’re the ones who haven’t fixed the problem – not the bleeding heart fruitcake left.

I only hope the Australians don’t start taking their frustrations out on NZers? You know they are mighty touchy on the Apple issue. And Kiwi migrants taking their jobs. We could be next!

At least we are safe enough here with a Govt that respects cultural differences, and is prepared to talk through issues.
We may have ended up in the same boat as Austrlia if Brash/Hide had their way concerning race relations in NZ.

It’s probably more accurate to call this “young male” riots than race riots. (The Bra’s appearently have a few Polynesian members).

The local Cronulla community seem to have had a genuine concern about Lebanese gangs. The issue has sadly been hyjacked by a small number of spooky whites who have their own agenda. It’s possible that the Police have not taken a hard enough line on gangs, Lebanese or otherwise, in general.

There was for a time a belief that, because of liberal sentiments, violence and racism comming from ethnic communities was not dealt with ruthlessly enough but this doensn’t seem to be that great an issue in Sydney anymore. I really can’t believe that the Sydney Police would be treated Lebanese gangs with kid gloves for such a reason.

A quick perusal of a few the more,shall we say,out there, right wing Aussie blogs and sites will show that the call to arms for this event has been out for several days. Every wannabe skinhead bovver boy and his simpering aussie trash bride has had this marked as the social event of the week.
Generally there seems to be an idea that ANYONE who is not white is ok to bash(except strangly enough Pacific Islanders – as they’re on OUR side????).
Never mind that,as has been pointed out here, most of those people were innocent of any wrongdoing. Doesn’t seem to make any difference to these dickheads.
To me both sides seem like a bunch of cowards. They seem to only step forward when there are enough of them to have little chance of actually having to have a go one on one.

For what its worth I have just finished reading ‘Out of Eden’ by Stephen Oppenheimer. The book is about the latest mtDNA evidence of human migration around planet Earth. It seems, dear readers, that all of us, with the exception of true Africans, are recently related to each other. Every Asian,Arab,Euro,PI,South American human on the planet has a common ancestor within the last 70,000 years. We are all in fact cousins. We all know that blood is thicker than water so lets try a bit of love aye?

I think its probably relevant to point out that Labour has been in power in New South Wales since 1995 and that the state government has control over day to day policing. It has been Labour with the assistance of Peter Ryan that has brought in institutions such as the Anti Discrimination Board which have created the current problems.

I also note that the NSW police is well known for deliberately under reporting crime for public relations purposes. This was the origin of the whole cabramatta scandal, where the Police Minister claimed gang violence etc in Cabramatta was at an historic low, about a month before somebody blew the whistle and the true scope of the lawlessness was revealed.

Russell G, the Federal Government in Australia is Conservative, but the NSW government, which is responsible for policing (naturally) has been Labour for years.

Kia ora guys from the land oz.

U guys just to clam down a wee bit. This has been waiting to happen for sometime the state (NSW) government has failed as the as had Muslim community failed by standard back by leting its youths carrying on the way do. The Locals for not allowed the cops and the justice system to its jobs.
I’ve seen and experiecne this the ugly side of this violence by muslim youths in sydney when i was working in sydney driving trucks for one ofthe breweries sydney (after i left the NZ Army in 98)they gave the canterbury bankstowns/ lakemba areas to us kiwis as the white australians at depot made it a no go area as was around eveleigh st in redfern.

There was just another case of rape by muslim in sydney by a pakistani born 27 yr old raping a 13&14 yr old girls back in Jun- Jul in 02 (souce weekend australian pg 3 Dec 10-11. as for 98/99 rapes i last heard there was appeal by the defence as the sentece was to hard/high but i’m not sure the details of the appeal.

At the end of the day the people the knew this was going to happen sooner or later and everyone that could have stop it sat back and wash there hands of it and now they are trying to cover there ass. The people i feel for are the cops (the cops at the coalface knew this going to happen)and they were let down by the pollies, police hierarchy and co. The people who want to go to the beach without having to worry about the thugs froms both sides.

This story has media beat up written all over it. The headlines have been “Race Riots in Sydney” and “Hate Crime on the Beaches”, but come on, if you get 5000 young men together, give them a hot sun and even hotter beer to drink OF COURSE they will get violent. Shit, look at ‘the mount’ or any beach side New Years destination in the years before the alcohol ban.

I dont think racism makes much sense, but it is understandable that people will define themselves along racial and cultural lines. By my reckoning this beach invasion was a long time coming in Sydney. With history of the Lebanese mob, the Greek mob, the Italians, the Croats, the Serbs, the Macedonians, the Thais, the Malaysians, the Japanese and the Pakistanians it was only a matter of time before the Australian mob surfaced to assert its dominance.

But the message was clearly expressed by participants in interviews with the media, “You can come here and live and be free like the rest of us, but dont come here and start shit.”

Calling this a race riot is like calling National a bunch of facists. It may make you feel superior, but it doesnt make you credible, intelligent or right.

Yes, as the Cronulla locals seemed to indicate. I don’t think they’re very impressed with the “balls” of the rioters.

Interestingly, there’s a related discussion thread on The Australian newspaper website that seems to be running about 50-50 between horror and “good on them”. I’d be worried about that if I lived there …

Well that report is genuine. Your statement is a little disingenous though – crime committed by NZ people was between 1 and 1.5 for 6 out of the 8 years reviewed, and only between 1.5 and 2 for two. It was significantly lower than the Lebanese rates.

The report also states that the country of origin of offenders stopped being collected in 1995, which makes me wonder where the figures for 1996-1998 came from.

Of course this whole problem, like the Cabramatta fiasco earlier, has come about because Police have NOT been arresting enough of the Lebanese gang members. Paul Ryan’s suppression of true crime figures during his tenure for PR purposes is well documented.

Dunno. The author wasn’t exactly a bleeding heart liberal though. But it wouldn’t have counted most of the Lebanese gangster anyway – the leaders of the rape gang were born-and-bred Aussies, weren’t they?

And here’s something I read just now on Metafilter, and it’s a perspective that makes sense to me:

Disclaimer: I was born in Sydney, and my brother lives in Cronulla.

This is not, as delmoi claims “all over one guy getting beat up”. The Shire has developed a siege mentality over a number of years, and the locals’ gripe with Lebanese ricers goes way back before this particular incident.

The inhabitants of the Shire exemplify a stereotypical “Australian” culture – surfboards, barbecues, a Sunday arvo beer at Northies, a cattle dog in your ute, Barnsey on the stereo, 2.3 children jumping over the sprinkler under the Hills hoist, safe behind a white picket fence.

The Shire seems to be predominately white; at least, it seems to me that there are far, far fewer people of Mediterranean and Asian descent around that in, say, the southern or western suburbs. There never used to be an “us” and “them” attitude, at least one defined by race – there was the Shire, and then there was everybody else in Sydney. It’s a white enclave, much like Cabramatta for Vietnamese people.

Over the years, Shire residents have become concerned about an increasing number of incidents in which Lebanese ricers have disrupted the peace, particularly around Cronulla Beach. I have no idea why they started. Perhaps perfectly peaceful Lebanese visitors were hassled by locals. Perhaps less-than-innocent gangsta-wannabes saw the Shire as a symbol of a society that scorns them and thought they’d rock the boat a bit. I’ve seen both happen on my Sunday afternoon visits, and both make me sick.

Isolated incidents of cruising the beach, yelling insults out of the car at your enemy and having insults hurled back became more frequent. They escalated as young Lebanese men felt the need to prove something to these white guys who thought they owned the beach, and young Shire men felt the need to protect their turf.

Bashings became more common – not frequent, by any means, but enough to nag at the insular Shire’s sense of wellbeing. Lebanese guys would drive into a quieter part of Cronulla, pick somebody leaving a pub or cafe, and then either start hurling insults, trying to provoke a fight, or just leap out and start wailing on them. Shire lads would respond by preemptively kicking the crap out of anybody who wasn’t wearing a Billabong shirt and singing Advance Australia Fair.

I think the violence, and in particular, targetting people based purely on their race, is deplorable. I just wanted to point out that it’s been simmering for years, and it won’t be easy to put the lid back on this boil-over. As long as Lebanese hoons see the Shire as someplace to raid for glory and live out their “bling bling” gangsta fantasies, and as long as the residents of the Shire sees these incursions as a threat to their way of life, it’ll probably continue. I suspect there’ll be gunfire soon, and the victims will probably be innocent people trying to live a happy life, not the fuckheads on both sides who thrive on hate and drama.

I lived in each of Melbourne and Sydney for 2 years, and Melbourne has got nothing like the ethnic tension of Sydney. While Melbourne is pretty multicultural (though maybe not to the same degree), the various groups are much better assimilated. There is a fair bit of vietnemese gang activity I understand (there were a couple of high profile assaults and murders at Salt nightclub a couple of years ago), but it is generally confined to the vietnemese commnuity, so you never hear about it. Likewise with the Italian Gangsters. 25 Unsolved gangland murders last I checked, but all internecine. All feuds between the various gangster personalities.

What really sparked this I think was the constant, senseless harrassment a lot of Sydney-siders suffer day in day out from these leb-gangsters, and the fact that they just seem to get away with it.

Immigrants don’t have to move to Australia. They could just stay in Lebanon. If they do move to Australia they should leave their bad attitude behind and try and integrate into the Australian way of life (isn’t that why they’re going there?) or they should just leave. Same goes for people moving to NZ.

The rioters rioted (charging around beating people burning cars and such) – there is no excuse for that sort of behaviour. the fact it may have had somthing to do with racism is no excuse (strangely some people seem to be hinting that it is).

A seperate issue is if there is a problem with lebanese gangs (rather like saying is there a problem with white criminals – it is true pretty much by definition)
and more generally are lebanese more violent than whites and whites more violent than asians or men more violent than women or tall people more violent than short ones.
(if you are going to have a riot agains one of them you might as well riot against all the former catagories)

Enoch Powell’s “rivers of blood” speech was made in his dotage. Senility seemed to set in early with the old chap – a couple of decades earlier he was advocating armed force force to quash Indian independence in order to maintain the Empah.

Whatever, the expression was used in relation to the UK, and it has come nowhere near even remotely been borne out by subsequent events – despite what certain festering little pieces of arrested development might wish.

BTW, Enoch taught Latin & Greek at Sydney Uni in the late 1930s – Gough was one of his pupils.

The reason why they give us the tough jobs to us Kiwi’s is because of who we are and we don’t take any shit from nobody,ie we didn’t take our fists to a knife fight put it that way and they (lebs/muslims) are all a bunch cry babies when u stand up to them just like some skinheads i know back in NZ or the TNI from East Timor. Hence why they go for soft targets but anyone in a group will take the soft option.
No i’m not a maori or someone from the islands but a half oz,half kiwi.

This comment sums up the situation well, and illustrates why a “racist” interpretation of the situation is not only valid but merely natural. A person’s appearance and colour communicates to whom they belong; when one misbehaves they draw the whole family into disrepute. This is a very necessary understanding of accountability, to ensure parents, grandparents, aunties and uncles actually fulfill their role, do their duty, and raise the next generation with standards, decency and civility.

Also, as Anti-Hippy said;

When it comes to standards, decency and civility, it seems the Leb gangs have none for Australian Brits. They won’t respect Law and police; and their culture and religion allows them a seemingly legitimate anti-West expression. I suspect it will not be long before it is apparent to all how irrelevant is the bleeding-heart rhetoric. It is already starkly obvious the failure of “multiculturalism”. The institution of race is deeply embedded within thousands of years of cultural identity, and it is not about to disappear anytime soon.

It surprises me that among all the raciest blather in this thread today that nobody is actually asking what can we learn from the Sydney Riots.

The same racial tensions exist presently here among a variety of different groups and personally I believe it is simply a matter of time before we see a similar display of discontent with the situation.

Most likely this is will occur in South Auckland which arguably contains the greatest mix of enthnic groups in NZ, is already a leader for racial based conflict, suffers from high levels of povety and has some of the lowest levels of policing.

Governments can’t elminate racism. If I’m going to hate somebody for the colour of their skin, the country they come from or any other reason, then legislating against it isn’t going to stop me. What Governments can do is ensure that all persons are treated equally and are punished appropriately if they fail to do that.

Social and community leaders however can elminate racism (not easily but a hell of more easily than what Governments can). For them to be leaders they already have the respect of their relevent communities can speak out against racism etc.
