Here’s another good piece from The Australian on the ALP’s factionlism.

Some points are political appropriate for NZ too:

“The political class of these successive generations – union officials, ministerial staffers, employees of the ALP offices – has in common a complete adaptation of career, mobility, mating, pack mentality, ideological carapace and camouflage so as to secure their seats in a parliament somewhere. In the 1970s, as blue-collar unions were no longer able to rely on talent emerging from the ranks, their benighted, ageing leadership brought in tertiary-educated young blokes with a stint in the ALP.”

“Young Australians might, upon graduation, practise law, trade foreign exchange, do missionary work in Africa, teach children, learn a trade, go adventuring. In which case, they have probably walked away from a Labor seat in parliament. To take a real job in the world of work, as do most Australians, as do most members of the Labor Party, is contrary to the principles of natural selection, certainly ALP selection. Adaptation dictates a career inside the political class. They take jobs in unions, with ministers and in the ALP. With considerably less ability than is required to make it to the top in the public service or the private sector, they rose to positions where they commanded the “A class” shares. You have to drill down many levels in such companies as BHP-Billiton to find the levels of mediocrity that exist in the upper reaches of the ALP.”
