Open borders

Not PC argues that NZ should have open borders and allow anyone who is not a convicted criminal, a would-be terrorist, or carrying infectious diseases.

This is where libertarianism goes extreme. I believe that citizens of a country do have *some* collective rights and this includes the right to define how many people can move to live here from other countries.

If NZ became the only country in the world with open borders, we would soon have a population of over ten million, a welfare state (after a while migrants qualify) of huge proportions, massive unemployment, a shortage of land and property, a “begging” class of those without education or skills, oh and around 2 million more students getting interest free student loans.

Sure open borders would work if the world was a fairer place and all countries had similar wealth and education levels. But it isn’t. And yes it is unfair that people born in a third world country often have a miserable existence with little future. But a small country especially has very limited capacity to solve their problems.
