NZ Herald on BDM Bill

The NZ Herald has an excellent editorial on the latest attack on our freedoms – the Births Death and Marriages Bill, which seeks to remove public access to the record of such events.

The motivation may be sincere, which is to make identity fraud more difficult. But it is a massive over-reaction. In fact I would go the other way and the BDM Register and the Citizenship Register available online for everyone to access. That way if someone is using an identity, then it is easier to check if it is genuine etc.

Again credit goes to the minor parties, who have teamed up with National (which oppossed the bill at first reading) to demand changes.
