    NZ coal is high grade coal and is to good to burn in a large thermal power station. That is why Genesis imports low grade Indonesian coal. Victoria, Australia traditionally used low grade ‘brown’ coal for its LaTrobe Valley power stations which supplied much of its electricity.
    As things pan out it seems that Huntly is being used significantly more than intended. It looks as if all three available Rankine (steam turbo alternators) units (the fourth unit is used as a source of spare parts) will be in use this winter especially because of late commissioning of new Contact geothermal plant and a continuing squeeze on gas supplies. It would be better if the Huntly Rankine units were scrapped and low capital cost gas turbines used for ‘last ditch’ generation (using gas or cheapest acceptable liquid fuel). But then Jacinds’s ‘captain’s call’ have pushed effective preferences towards coal..

      There are environmental downsides to every form of energy (especially wind and solar). According to numerous specialist grid energy engineers and energy economists it would make most sense to drill or frack for gas in the medium term. Then significantly up the spend on R&D to find cost effective and minimally polluting alternative energy sources (including advanced nuclear).

Let’s analyze the evidence.

Drag Queen story time tour cancelled

Hastings District Council and Rotorua Lakes Council cancelled three events combined last month, citing safety concerns and disinformation.

This is what happens when you yourselves used those same tactics to cancel legitimate speaking tours.

The scheduled shows would have seen two drag performers read stories about inclusivity and acceptance to children.

So it wasn’t just children’s stories, it was LGBQTI+ propaganda.

  Also from the article re drag queens tour being cancelled, it is reported that the guy who painted over a rainbow crossing has been fined $16,093 -presumably the cost of reinstating the original surface.
  Although having married into the family of Brian Tamaki won’t have helped either perhaps.
  What makes this hard for the lay person to accept is that there appears to have been no consequences for the activists who walked into the Te Papa museum carrying several kinds of tools and paints in backpacks – then scaled an interior wall to deface an exhibit because they didn’t agree with it.

She offers up statistics which shows a very large gap between the numbers of children who are criminally harmed according to police records and the numbers of children in the care and protection of Oranga Tamariki.

Is the rate of intentional injury increasing for the very reason that Oranga Tamariki is taking fewer children into state care?

If the answer is ‘yes’ then the whole drive to leave mainly Maori children with their whanau for cultural reasons is flawed.

      Also it is overwhelmingly maori kids that are being uplifted, due to abuse, neglect and exposure to drugs and gangs etc. One of the hysterical (in every sense of the word) reasons that some taxpayer-funded part-maori female lawyers gave for not repealing Section 7AA (as the coalition are going to do) was that “this would unfairly disadvantage maori as 60% of tamariki being uplifted are maori”.
      
      Yes, that’s rather the point you dopey trougher. Every child born into a maori family (in the loosest possible sense of the word) is already disadvantaged. By the time OT get their shit together and actually uplift the poor kids, they’re already further disadvantaged, but not irretrievably so.
      
      Preventing their placement in a safe, loving foster environment, regardless of the ethnicity or skin pigment of the carers, is almost certainly going to doom them to a life of crime, drugs, welfare dependency and/or prison, if not to an early death at the hands of their culturally-acceptable so-called carers.

Lindsay has dug deep into available data on numbers of police call outs and hospitalisations of our most vulnerable and drawn an unsurprising conclusion.     it’s an interesting point and I think the words you are looking for are “exogenous” and “endogenous’ or in common English “marrying out” or “marrying in”.
    There are many variations on this, can you marry out of your tribe/kinship group and still retain your status, and what of the status of your children?
    Polynesians (wide-ranging seafarers) have always been exogenous, the British (also wide-ranging seafarers) have been somewhat exogenous, the working class even more so and sailors even more than that.
    The European aristocracy was always highly endogenous, marry out of your social class and you risk losing your social status.

I remember when

Once again the green advocates are allowed to promote an idea without any critical media response.
The call to grow kikuyu grass lawns and then to not mow them was a typical example.
Kikuyu grass, like many imported plants, is considered by many to be an invasive weed.
It grows from a thick network of rhizomatous roots and sends out stolons which extend along the ground, rapidly forming dense mats and suppressing other plant species.

Might plant some and watch it battle for supremacy with the paspalum.

    The kikuyu is winning hands down …. its stolons (and rhizomes) creep forth in all directions all year long. The nasty paspalum only raises its heads (leaves and flowering stalks) in late summer….. and won’t make too much progress trying to seed into a sward of kikuyu.
    
    If I didn’t regularly mow the lawns, there would be a metre high fringe of kikuyu around my property, threatening to take over the rest of the hill.

  I have to say, in hindsight, the number of supermarket single use plastic bags that I’ve seen blowing about the place has dropped to pretty much zero.
  
  Other things aside, that’s a win. I still buy and use single use plastic for my kitchen bin.

        The “biodegradable” plastic thing is somewhat of a con it would appear. They do degrade much faster than straight out plastic, but the kicker is what they degrade into. Sure there are some plastic-like substances (corn based and so on) that “bio-degrade” but they tend to be not very good as containers and bags.
        
        At the supermarket I just pay an extra 25c per shop for a thick paper shopping bag. I chuck it away when I get home.

    I don’t recall ever seeing single use plastic bags blowing about the place, at least not in New Zealand.
    
    I’ve definitely seen thousands of them in SE Asia, including in every waterway (Halong Bay is a cess-pool unfit for swimming, if you’ve been there recently). I understand something like 95% of the plastic that finds its way into the oceans comes from just 5 rivers. They are all in Asia.

        None of us who receive super have previously paid for it. That is not how the New Zealand Superannuation works. All we did is pay for the super that our parents received. Now it is the current generation of taxpayers who are paying for our super.
        Of course, many superannuats are paying much more tax on their other income than they get in super. Perhaps 10 to 20% of superannuats are in that situation. But most are not.

        The present system replaced a user pays system of some sort that would have meant by now the superannuation payments would have been from our own contributions, as I understand
        That would have meant, I expect, pensioners would have received the money no matter where they were resident, unlike the current system

        It doesn’t really matter what exactly we paid for as we had no say on how it was being spent.. What matters is that we did pay on the understanding that we will be looked after when we no longer can pay. It is the role of the government to decide how our contributions are allocated and spent. None of these “x is more environmentally friendly” tropes stack up if you look more closely at the other side of the coin.       Soap powder is biodegradable (I used to make it for a living), cotton is a natural fibre, NZ electricity generation is one of the most environmentally friendly globally. The wind is free.
      
      The reason no one will ban plastic nappies is that they’re more scared of women than concerned about the environment.

    Plastics come from fossil fuels and can be burned at high temps as fuel. “Recycling” plastic is overwhelmingly a scam (as in literal mountains of the stuff from the 1st world piling up in third world countries or just being dumped in the land or oceans to hang around for centuries and tangle up wild life).

  A rumour? Under which of Brown’s ministerial portfolios? Surely this would be down to Simmonds under Environment and Seymour under Regulation.
  
  As much as I would welcome it, it’s hard to see that happening. Kiwis love turning necessity into virtue and this is one such case.
  
  The backlash would be substantial and I don’t think Luxon would want the grief for such a small gain. The Teals are a powerful lobby within the National Party and no doubt would see this as, um, “divisive”. Far as I know they want to take such regulations further and ban single-use plastic bottles, which means most of the bottles in the chiller at the local dairy.
  
  On the upside, if they can swing it no law needs to be repealed because the ban was by Order in Council under the Waste Minimisation Act 2008.

  Imagine if the right showed some out of the box thinking and did something like reward companies with tac credits if they reduced plastic use in packaging… the only reason coke comes in a plastic bottle and not glass is because it’s cheaper…. tax break for using glass and setting up a rebottling plant… job creation and less waste plus you get to watch greenies crap the bed as you show how to work with business to reduce waste and create jobs.

    Bring back bottle drives for clubs and the like.
    I went on countless bottle drives in the late 50s, early 60’s. 3 or 4 bottle drives would by a brand new rowing skiff…… 1000 dozen empty beer bottles was considered a good collection.
    Scouts did them too.
    Ahhhh… second thoughts, would probably have to put out cones and trucks be escorted these days.

    Yes, the corporates would make a lot of virtue-signalling noises but plastic bags don’t cost them at all.
    
    A time-in-motion study at any checkout, especially during busy times, would reveal a nightmare. Even several years after the ban, the use of customer bags creates significant bottlenecks.
    
    If the bag ban is reversed I’ll donate to Greenpeace, and I loathe Greenpeace.

      It’s really crazy.
      Basically, allowing the testimonies was based on a 1901 murder case (People vs Molineux) where the precedent was supposedly created.
      However, that case was overturned on appeal (a higher court) so the precedent didn’t actually exist.
      
      The retrial is therefore absolutely cut and dried.
      
      4-3 though.
      
      “Judge Singas dissented, arguing the majority’s ruling “perpetuates outdated notions of sexual violence and allows predators to escape accountability.” – so an appeals court judge thinks he’s a pig and should be held accountable, the law be damned.

  One would have thought her competence would have been understood by now.

    I have first hand knowledge of what is required to be an effective Minister. It is very different from being in opposition where most, but not all, politicians just get to throw rocks.
    
    I was staggered at her “deer in the headlights” performance with her media interviews. I suspect that Chris Luxon will keep a close eye on her performance in her remaining portfolios. I do feel sorry for her but it is a tough business.
    
    Phil Twyford was another example. The sheer scale of his incompetence could never have been predicted from his performance in opposition.

  It sounds like there is zero diplomacy/talking going on between the West & Russia. That just means there is no sign of negotiated peace anytime soon.

  The only real benefit of doing our own refining is cheaper and readily available bitumen and C02 Gas.
  
  As I understand it.
  Hence the commercial decision to close the refinery as the cost benefit analysis didn’t support continuing, especially with a very large upgrade requirement on the horizon.

If Te Papa do not use the “Littlewood Draft” then Te Papa is part of the Coup – the takeover to tribal rule in New Zealand. These Islands are not R. T. Rower, they are New Zealand!
“If Te Papa now aims at “providing a fresh view (of the Treaty’s meaning) to inform contemporary conversations” that clearly implies that Te Papa intends to become involved in the twisting of historical reality in support of iwi demands for ever more power and authority.”

with some of his business colleagues.

  A few years back, while at a rooftop bar in Melbourne, I was approached by a gentleman who prefers the company of other gentleman. I was civil in my discourse then, when my drinks arrived, I went back to the table where my wife was laughing her head off. There’s no need to offer these guys violence, are they any different to the guys hitting on women in bars?

The story didn’t include the fact Lal is in a state of continual outrage at anyone who disagrees with him.
Other than that, the story was just about some whining drag queen looking for a payout because he was cancelled. Boo f##king hoo.
