  I didn’t like everything Hitchens said or did, but on the issue of radical Islam I agreed with everything he said. Douglas Murray has done a good job of fearlessly picking up Hitchens’ torch too, worth keeping and eye out for his content.

      As always, if you do a little digging, you can find out why someone holds (or held) the views they did.
      
      For a start, Hitchens was an alcoholic and a womaniser, so it’s easy to see why he’d be anti-religion – it would restrict his lifestyle.
      
      And then, also very importantly – and all roads lead back to this, much to the chagrin of many commenters – Hitchens was Jewish. Thus, the hatred for the Catholic church, as well as of Islam, being the Jews’ and Israels’ biggest enemies respectively.
      
      This also helps to explain Hitchens’ intense shilling for the war in Iraq and other middle east follies. By any measure, he was a spokesman for the Neocons, because he was one.

        That is bizarre thinking. He was an atheist for the same reasons that I am an atheist. Believing in a supernatural entity is delusional. BTW he was certainly an alcoholic but AFAIK he was happily married to Carol Blue.

        Regards Hitchens, he was first and foremost a Marxist albeit a fallen one. That’s where his atheism comes from because Marx believed the solace offered by religion in the face of suffering was an impediment to the revolutionary impulse which would free the masses from their oppressors. That’s why he called religion the opium of the people, it dulling them into acquiescence.
        
        That said, Hitchens went on to construct a fairly robust polemic against religious belief as can be found in his books and the often rowdy yet deeply-intellectual debates he engaged in with those of all religions.

        I am a big fan of H.G. Wells; not only for the reason that he was a very strong advocate for the ‘STV in large constituencies’ electoral system (see ‘Ch. 21 — The Disease of Parliaments’, here: An Englishman Looks at the World (gutenberg.net.au) [1914]).
        
        But Don, the quote you reproduce [H.G. Wells was a product of his time, and place (including in ‘society’)] is not proof that Jesus Christ (who, yes, I accept did exist) was “the Son of God”, because, in my view (not, of course, that that means anything to you) the Abrahamic ‘god’ simply does not exist. Such an entity is nothing more than the product of “men’s” imaginations.
        
        And let’s face it, Jesus Christ was not revered in his own lifetime. He, over time (from about 312–325 CE), became an accidental “dominant figure in all history”, through the collective opinion and efforts of others, who had their own agenda.

        The relationship between the Nazis and the churches was mixed.
        
        For example, senior Catholic clergy seem to have been prominent in the “rat lines” that allowed hunted Nazi leaders to escape to South America after the war.

        C’mon, Bolly, that’s nonsense.
        
        As far as I’m aware, Hitler was at least ostensibly a Christian (probably Catholic). He just didn’t act like a true Christian, but then, there are many commenters here who claim to be Christian, but you wouldn’t know it from their comments.
        
        Stalin (especially) and Mao quite possibly were not necessarily unbelievers; as I understand it, their communist philosophy simply had no place for an authority higher than “the Party”.
        
        As for Genghis Khan, I suspect he would be better described as a heathen, or as a pagan, rather than an atheist. And as for Tamerlane, he was more likely a Muslim than an atheist. If not, then surely, he too, would be better described as a heathen, or as a pagan.
        
        So, my point is, Christians (particularly Catholics) committed their atrocities to “convert” heathens to Christianity (or simply to maintain their hold over people), whereas atheists / heathens did not commit their atrocities to “convert” Christians, or anyone else, to atheism, or to ‘heathenism’ / paganism. They committed their atrocities for reasons of power, politics, etc.
        
        That is the big difference.

  If you support free speech, then people have to be allowed to carry swastikas. Should a tiny minority be able to determine what is and isn’t allowed to be said or expressed in public, or what opinions can be held or conclusions reached, just because they don’t like it?

  It may have been abolished by Major in 1991, but a remarkably short time later (1992) it was replaced by a virtually identical tax, which is still in force today. It’s called the Council Tax, and does more or less the same thing as the old “Poll Tax”.

David Seymour’s New Zealanders rights and responsibilities bill (from their website https://www.treaty.nz ) confirms –

1 – the New Zealand Government has the right to govern all New Zealanders
2 – the Government will honour all New Zealanders in their control of their land and all their property
3 – All New Zealanders are equal under the law with the same rights and duties

But each of these rights and responsibilities are covered by existing laws.
Some examples –
1 – The New Zealand Government’s right to govern all New Zealanders is established under the New Zealand Constitution Act 1986 and the Bill of Rights 1990.
2 – Property rights are protected by the Property Law Act 2007, the Bill of Rights Act 1990, and the Public Works Act 1981, ensuring that individuals have the right to control and enjoy their property.
3 – the principle of equality under the law is enshrined in the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act 1990, the Human Rights Act 1993, and the Electoral Act 1993, ensuring that all New Zealanders are treated fairly and equally by the legal system.

How can the New Zealanders rights and responsibilities bill be proposed as law, when the proposals are already law?

  Yeah. I find this one or Seymour’s initiative hard to get my head around. He’s essentially put into plain English the 3 ToW articles. I think what he is trying to do is to actually specify the ToW principles which to date have been left to others outside parliament to define. Both past and this current attempt to identify said principles is erroneous. They are superfluous. If anything is needed, it’s an act by parliament to eradicate the principles from all legislation and then final clarification from parliament of where the ToW stands in 21st century law, if at all. I have my thoughts on that too.

    While his speech to more than 10,000 people at Tūrangawaewae Marae in Ngāruawāhia was largely optimistic, Kiingi Tūheitia criticised the Government’s Treaty Principles Bill, which aimed to redefine the Treaty principles, and called for Te Tiriti o Waitangi to be written into legislation so politicians “can’t change nothing”.
    He didn’t make specific references to any proposed legislation but did indicate his strong condemnation for the Treaty Principles Bill, created by Act and agreed to in its coalition with National. “There’s no principles, the Treaty is written. That’s it.”

    Can they confirm that the Maori Advisory Council, in its privileged position of presiding over the New Zealand Water Regulator, still exists or not after the Coalition Government dumped “3 Waters”
    
    The 3 issues ACT wants to place in law, are already law, so what is ACT and New Zealand First’s next move?
    
    (Cassandra, I have been listening a little. Why does ACT not now bypass stumbling stone Luxon – he is not listening – and actually get on with their next move: what they plan doing after their law is established, because as said above, it is already established.

      It’s to reinforce those laws because they are overlooked ‘due to the Treaty’. If you believe Maori are in partnership with the Crown (the Government) then the Crown is not governing Maori. That ‘partnership’ could one day evolve in to a Government but as currently structured not – proven by when there’s a legal challenge on something it is Maori v the Crown.
      And on property rights, ask Fletchers or whoever it was how well the Government upheld their rights at Ihaumoto. In fact due to Ardern virtue signalling, the Government actively worked against the land owner’s right to do what it wanted.

      Who says they are not? I’m pretty sure Seymour and his impressive group of new MPs and ministers can do a number of things all at once.
      
      Further, it’s a *coalition*. There are limits to what one partner in that coalition can do without the consent of the other two. Here’s an example: Luxon and Peters have both poured cold water on the Treaty Principles bill and the referendum.
      
      So what is ACT to do? Well, apparently nothing since there is no support for that bill past first reading and committee stages. It all seems moot.
      
      But there’s significant grassroot activism for a citizens-initiated referendum on this thing, which ACT is perfectly free to encourage, and given enough support it will have great influence on government policy regardless of any limitations within the coalition agreement.
      
      Note: we’ve already seen the coalition being frustrated by contracts entered into and clauses enacted by the previous government, many of which aren’t simply a matter of law changes to overcome. Not everything can be handled under urgency or by the majority running roughshod over what went before, and neither should you want that. Down that path lies peril.

    Absolutely correct. Although these laws are already in place, they are not being enforced. We have activist judges in this land. I really think this action is aimed at stopping the judges from making interpretations of the law.

  You’re missing the point, which also seems to be lost on Peters and Luxon.
  
  That being that similar provisions already enacted have not prevented the corruption of the judiciary and bureaucracy in their pursuit of an Antipodean two-state solution in the form of co-governance and unequal representation before the law.
  
  The crucial second pillar of Seymour’s proposal is that although the bill will be enacted by parliament it can only come into effect after a referendum ratifies it, thus giving the law an imprimatur which is about as robust as anything can be in our malleable parliamentary system of government.

Install a shower in the corner of the bathroom. With no separate enclosure. The bathroom floor is continuous so you stand on the floor to have your shower.

No matter what you do half the bathroom floor is covered with water. 😭

  Used levelling compound to slope the floor to the drain (~30mm fall)
  Custom made shower curtain rails are cheap.

      My Parents lived in one in Taumarunui. Single bedroom unit. The whole bathroom was one floor, shower (with curtain) toilet, and basin. Very small mirror cabinet.
      It was in a group of about 8 to 10 units. Nice place, except the trains come past about 150 meters way.
      We slept on bed/settee and kids on the floor.
      I kid you not, the whole bathroom was just one floor. Non slip in the shower area.

  We have a wet area with no enclosure, minor slope to the drain in the ceramic floor tiles and what they call a rain shower head. Use a small towel to stand on while drying and to wipe up the minor spreading and no problem.

I know its All Fools Day but with it are my thought for it.
Why is it we are watching and listening to all things negative by our so called media in all its forms.
Is it because they lost the election, whereby New Zealand elected totally against their views the first MMP Coalition Government so it remains form them to denigrate not only politically but socially all the country.
When will people consider their own thoughts that New Zealand is, be, and can again, after the disaster of the previous Government which will take years to try and correct.
Much of the damage is irreparable but peoples attitude can once again supersede that.
If only New Zealands can onec again have a positive view on life here against many other countries elsewhere where famine and warfare continue we can see a future for our children.
There are very many excellent ones with us against a media produced poor ones, but the media continue to condemn all of us again.
Remember Telethon when most of the country pulled together even for a short time.
Please think positively despite the personal problems many have and lift our Country again.
We stayed over 50 years ago, here on a three years contract, because we saw a future, and still do.
Despite disappointments we are going positive.
Thinks about it, ignore the wingers, of which there are many.
Many overseas people would join us here if they could.
Let us Make New Zealand Great Again.

  The Texas hailstorm damaged solar panels video was very interesting. Most of the solar panels were damaged in a multitude of places (ten or more hailstones per panel). Right next to those damaged panels were many solar panels in perfect undamaged condition.

I came across this study yesterday.

It is a study to analyse the location, characteristics, and well being of state house tenants.

It’s main conclusion is that Kàinga Ora tenants have higher “life satisfaction” than private tenants and comparable well being and life satisfaction as folk who own their homes. 🤡

I just don’t know what you do with that conclusion. 🙄 It is clear that state house tenants do not have higher wellbeing than other folk because 90 percent are unemployed.

This study received considerable funding from MBIE. David Seymour might want to ask some questions about the research that MBIE funds.

Also it is another example of the perversion of the state trying to measure and influence wellbeing. You get idiotic conclusions like this. We would all be better off as Kàinga Ora tenants.

  Many people are happy with what they are getting on a lifestyle of the benefit and KO.
  
  Often it is dissatisfaction that motivates people into getting a better job/income etc, so if people are satisfied by what they have then why bother with seeking a better life?
  
  Of course there are other people there who want to see what they can accomplish in life and will have a lifetime of striving to improve themselves. They are never quite satisfied. They are also unlikely to be KO residents.
  
  The talk of poverty in NZ is complete bullshit. Anyone who thinks there is poverty in NZ has never been to Africa.

  Being on a benefit does not equate to unemployed. Some of those folk are likely seriously busy.
  New Zealand ‘informal economy’ is estimated at $26 billion each and every year. (worldeconomics.com) That’s a lot for a small country like ours but will include plenty if not legally resident or employed by enterprises like the one recently in the headlines (and not in a good way). .
  
  Social housing rent is based on income as declared. Pretty good chance there will some of those households with informal income. In fact they do pop up in the media time to time, though not so much in the past few years.

Some guy commits a major act of domestic terrorism (the first significant instance in our history), while, at that moment only a few blocks away there is an anti-domestic terrorism course taking place, with, as I understand it, participants from multiple countries. Shortly thereafter, Christchurch is swarming with non-uniformed masked men carrying automatic weapons.
      
      To all but the least curious, this seems odd at the least. Was the convergence of events ever explained, because it is prima facie something begging for an explanation?
      
      What are the odds of that being a coincidence? I’m not a statistician, but they must be astronomical.

  It would be nice to see some reasoned analysis of why these folk don’t like rainbow crossings. I suspect that it is not because they hate people who are same sex attracted. If we reflect on the last 40 years, that battle has been won long ago by such people.
  
  So what has changed in the last three to five years? My hypothesis is that many people are not comfortable with the explosion of trans ideology. The discomfort has nothing to do with gay people. It is simply that somehow trans extremists have been embraced by the “gay community” or there has been a forced merger. I don’t know which is correct.

    No, it is the gay community. But people aren’t immoral in themselves, the things they do are. Nobody hates homosexuals, they hate what they do. But this isn’t new and in fact we see this deliberate conflation in many areas of political life. The act being critiqued is substituted for the actor doing it, and “therefore,” the critic hates the actor. Wrong.
    
    If you are a Christian, you believe that homosexuality is a sin. The liberal orthodoxy can have its “sins” (racism, sexism, Whiteness etc.) and enforce them and impose them on the basis of considering them “hateful” and “immoral”, yet when Christians act in opposition to the tenets of liberal orthodoxy, then they get their knickers in a twist. The worst thing is that non-liberals tend to accept wholesale the worldview of the liberal, and let themselves be controlled and restricted by it. That’s why the liberal orthodoxy is the orthodoxy, because everyone tends to accept it and the moral contours it engenders, whether consciously or not.
    
    In short the hate expressed as a matter of course by liberals against those they consider sinners is a moral necessity, whereas if a stand is taken against liberalism, they can’t handle it, even though what is being done is exactly the same in principle as what they do.
    
    As I have argued before, you cannot accept homosexuality and then be surprised when transgenderism becomes the next “battleground” because the one is a logical progression from the other. You have to reject it all.

      I had a brother who was homosexual. He lived an apparently normal life without overtly parading his preferences, and had a wide variety of friends, some of whom were a bit ‘over-the-top’ as we said back then.
      The problem with some of today’s young people is that they have no sense of their own ordinariness
      and to make it worse, they get all the attention they want by flaunting their ‘difference’ and provoking outrage among ordinary folk.
      We all need to treat them like attention-seeking 4 yo and ignore them. Especially the media who act like smart-arse 9 yo’s & encourage them.

      Che, transgenderism is not a “logical progression” from homosexuality. It has nothing to do with it and is, in fact, homophobic. Transgenderism holds that biological sex isn’t immutable or binary and is “assigned” at birth. It doesn’t support the idea of same sex attraction because it believes that biological sex is trumped by an “inner feeling” of “gender identity”. Gay women in particular are screwed over by the trans movement which attempts to aggressively bully them into sex with natal males who claim to be lesbians (the idiots clearly struggle with the concept of consent as well). The homophobia, misogyny and anti science delusional nonsense of the trans movement which dominate Stonewall and other alphabet lobby groups is precisely why a breakaway group called LGB Alliance has formed.

  This is one of Labour’s success stories, a point bag cost around $70 in 2003, and while prices were already falling Labour bought the gram price down “28 percent compared to four years ago (down from $563 per gram in 2017/18 to $406 per gram in 2022/23), although 2020 saw a record low of $390 per gram.” In their first term!!!
  The issue is perhaps that while a gram might now be say $300, it unlikely anyone except a professional dealer will be able to get two point bags for their $70.

The Herald. When Labour lifted benefits it’s all wonderful. When the national coalition do it, it’s not enough.

Labour’s social development spokeswoman Carmel Sepuloni said this Government’s “measly” 2 per cent increase to the minimum wage meant lower paid workers would again fall behind inflation and go backwards in real terms.

Indexing benefits to inflation rather than wage growth meant many New Zealanders will get less this year, as the Government instead gives a big tax break to landlords, Sepuloni said.

You’d think it was an April fools joke if you didn’t know how stupid they were.

Headline.

“Auckland Man says Destiny Church Member assaulted him for raising Rainbow Flag in Tree.”

Paragraph 2. “Zane Wedding told the Herald church security punched him twice in his eye”

10 paragraphs of accusations and claims telling Zane’s story.

Paragraph 12, “Destiny Church has hit back, describing Wedding’s claims as “mischief-making” and suggesting the tree climber already had a black eye before being spoken to church security.” ““I sincerely hope he is not trying to accuse us of this, for the sake of a bit of drama to suit their case.””

Paragraph 17 final paragraph: “Police said inquiries were under way to establish exactly what took place, and whether an assault occurred, but confirmed there were no injuries reported as a result of the incident.”

In responsible journalism the police statement should have been the 1st paragraph.

Media mislead the public that Destiny Church assaulted someone and caused a black eye. When Destiny Church deny it and police who have been called to the incident, don’t have any reports of an injury and haven’t charged anyone with assault.

Media are acting as police, judge and jury and propaganda outlet.

Is focus on worker diversity contributing to Boeing’s plane faults?

The office of Texas state attorney-general, Ken Paxton, is looking into parts supplier Spirit Aerosystems because of “apparent manufacturing defects” in parts that “have led to numerous concerning or dangerous incidents.”

Documents Paxton’s called for from the company include those with details of internal discussions around Spirit’s efforts to create a diverse workforce “and whether those commitments are unlawful or are compromising the company’s manufacturing processes.”

A Spirit-made door-plug panel blew off an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 Max in January.

  In 1980 or so, Prince (now King) Charles was very much opposed to smoking and was the patron of some anti-smoking outfit.
  
  He was once quoted saying that kissing a smoker was like licking an ashtray.

And did you see where that poor girl who died in Queensland on Good Friday
from a suspected drug-overdose, was from here. Only 40. According to her FB profile,
she described herself as a….. ‘Shamanic Medicine Woman’.

Hmmm, maybe keep off bridges in the USA

An Arkansas River bridge reopened after a barge struck it Saturday afternoon near Sallisaw.

All lanes of US-59 were closed at the river, just south of Sallisaw at the Sequoyah and LeFlore county line just before 1:30 p.m. They reopened around two hours later.

Engineers with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation conducted an inspection, and they found that it was safe to reopen.

  The barge drivers/pilots fall asleep because it is a very monotonous job. There is a company in the USA that sells a product that sets off an alarm to wake the driver if the rudder hasn’t moved for a while.
