  What should be remembered is Tulsi Gabbard only left the Democrat Party late 2022. Also don’t forget that Donald Trump was once a Democrat.

  This is why some people shouldn’t get a vote: place a moderately attractive woman in front of them and have her spout a series of platitudes, and they’re falling over themselves with excitement. Why? Because she’s a woman and having a woman as a VP candidate is sign of how enlightened the GOP is?
  
  Gabbard’s just a liberal who sees gap in the market, as far as I can see. Moreover, it is evident from that clip that she is selling a book. She’s part of the system through and through. She’s a former WEF Young Global Leader, and she and her donors know she can attract a good proportion if thirsty male GOP voters, perhaps winning over the “soccer moms.”

I think a good indicator of the state of the nation was the lack of humour yesterday on April Fools day. There were some stories but the media was too scared to promote them.
The nation has become a humourless place mired in the swamp of fear to say anything in case some moron in a dark room with hoody over their head takes um-bridge.

I think the biggest joke at the moment are EV owners. If you charge at a public charger it now costs the same as a petrol car to travel a Km – 19cents. If you charge at home its less – 11 cents a Km. These include the RUC charges.

My 4 year old Xtrail costs me 21-24c/Km for petrol

Add to the EV kilometre charge the original cost – up to 40% more car for car. Now add the tyre extra costs 35-50% more for EV tyres (the car is heavier) and they wear out 20% quicker.
Now add the second hand value – or more correctly the catastrophic collapse of the cars value.

Then add the extra cost for insurance – and remember that it wont be long before the ferries will refuse to carry them, and ………

  My EV works for me. Bought it “second” hand.
  I only charge at home. And use solar. Have been since 2019.
  
  If I drive beyond 120km I use an ICE or fly. I hate (refuse is too harsh a word) charging it at commercial sites.
  
  I am flush with capital but cashflow poor. I choose to pass my capital onto the next generations.

    The article doesn’t give the cost if you’re only charging from solar, but you also need to work in the cost of having your solar installed, which from when I costed it was significant.
    So jkt, what does your EV cost/km when you factor in the cost of your solar system over 5-10 years?

  People don’t just buy EV’s on price, certainly not for the EV’s in the higher price brackets. Some people, which I can imagine will shock some Kiwibloggers, buy them for climate change reasons.
  In NZ just about all charging is done at home. With smart chargers, the charging is done when power prices are at their lowest, typically 2 and 3 in the early morning.

    In truth, EVs are no more beneficial to “the climate” than ICE cars. In fact more than a few studies say they are more CO2 intensive.

    That such lies prevail in govt (politicians) and media is one of the main reasons people are so utterly disillusioned with both of these groups.

    It dropped 45% in the first year…
    He is well off but he still didn’t like that.
    Apparently Giltraps are sitting on a large pile of unsold EVs. A lot of Polestars- which are good cars.

    Charging at home may well be a good option for now, however…
    
    Current generation EV’s have increasingly large battery packs. The new EV9 from Kia for example has a 99.8 KWh battery pack.
    
    Plugging this in at home on a standard power supply will take 40 Hours to charge from 10% to 100%, so most people will go for a larger capacity home charger which will add an extra $1500, providing the existing wiring is suitable.
    
    This will reduce charging time to 14 hours from 10%.
    
    If they have three phase power to their charging point, this reduces to 9 hours and draws 11kW to do so…
    
    the question is if you have a street of say 20 houses, and 25% of these houses have EV’s what is the effect on the grid.
    
    The average family of four has a power usage per day of 21 kwh per day.
    
    These 20 homes would use about 294 kwh of power a week, or just under 600kwh per fortnight for the street.
    
    an EV9 has a Full Charge range of 500 km.
    
    The average family car drives 270 km per week or about 40 km per day.
    
    So you would expect each car to need to be charged fully about once a fortnight on average. Therefore, each car would use an extra 100 Kwh per fortnight. It wouldn’t be all at once, but it would have to happen.
    
    These 5 cars would nearly double the power consumption of the whole street. Can our infrastructure cope?
    
    Do we have enough generating capacity to cope with the increased load?

      You are mostly right but also slightly wrong on this one.
      40km driving per day means most EV owners will generally only do a part load and will only full charge when they go on a long trip. Even here most people will use their ICE for long trips.
      
      Most Tesla drivers will have all the bells and whistles. And the “Tesla” suburbs will get upgraded and the cost will be distributed across the entire network. Broad tax base.
      
      And that is why it is fair that we have a progressive tax rate.

However I do not understand the Government’s policy to increase the share of renewable energy. With the share at 80 percent, what will taking it to 90 percent do? It will be a drop in the bucket as far as meeting the Paris Accord commitments.

I maintain that the Government’s climate change policies are utterly fanciful.

  Bene: I am somewhat alarmed that he is planning to “take decisions” on the return of three strikes; that sounds very much to me like the beginning of a reversal of his committment to the electorate to restore it . I notice also that it is well down his list of priorities – number 33 I think.
  
  There were about 15,000 first strikers, 450 second, and only 30 third. That is clear evidence of what is called “specific deterrence”, i.e. deterrence of a particular class of offender.
  
  For the 500 odd second and third strikers who kept offending seriously, they were locked up for longer than hitherto, thus keeping them away from the rest of us for as long as possible.
  
  Coincidentally, this morning Stuff carries a story about an Indian liquor store owner who has had NINETEEN aggravated robberies across his various stores. Aggravated robbery was of course a “strike” offence, and would be again.

    It’s not so much down the list but in the section it belongs in. First section is economy and cost of living, second is law and order, then public services.

      That was my interpretation too. The number sequence can imply priority, but it is also an easier way of identifying tasks than using non-numeric bullet points.
      
      As for DG’s concern about ‘take decisions’ on three strikes, it might mean fixing first, before introducing the legislation, some of the problems which have arisen and DG himself has noted, eg, the judiciary’s refusal to fully implement the law as intended, the overly broad inclusion of a relatively mild offence in the three strikes legislation.
      
      Well, one can hope.

    The cheapest way to achieve more renewables would be to subsidise on site solar. Or just increase the cost of network power and those with capital and positive cash flows will adapt.
    
    Footnote:
    The more we spend on renewables the more we need to get ready for black outs.
    Fortunately, we are late adopters and there are many countries developing the technology to accommodate/manage blackouts, so we can just learn from them.

        But, yeah, hail stones are a risk. A decent hail storm can cause a lot of damage, no argument there.
        Insurance companies will insure them if you are prepared to pay the premium.

  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Luxon and his coalition partners are doing a great job. He’s getting stuck in and reversing the whole toxic Labour agenda and putting in commonsense policies.
  
  A new category of serious youth offenders, bringing back in 3 strikes. Lots of great stuff.
  
  Regarding climate change I would just say we have a very woke electorate, sections of which regard climate change as a type of religion. For them it’s the secular equivalent of the second coming. I would argue that if before the election National rejected the climate change scenario, they would have been unelectable.
  
  What I would also say is that they are not going to pay the millions of dollars that Jacinda had us up for to combat climate change. Also they are looking to restore oil and gas exploration and the possibility of reopening Marsden Point.
  
  So I consider Luxon is doing as well as can be expected and each day we are seeing some important incremental wins. 😊

    As any oil/gas exploration can be cancelled at the whim of a single person, no oil company is going to take any notice, unless there’s a major, major prospect. No significant seismic surveys have been done in the recent years so the latter is unlikely to be identify.
    
    As for the Marsden Point…the government would have to underwrite such reopening and continuing operation. Not going to happen.

        I know how the industry works. Spent 20 years in the O/G. You just can’t switch it on and off. The money involved is just phenomenal. A daily rate just for a rig is approaching 500K at the moment and there’s great shortage with almost 100% utilization.

        How can Taieri know this about Marsden Point Scott? Because its pretty easy. Since Megan Woods advised Channel Infrastructure that the refinery wasn’t a strategic asset, it’s been shut down. And parts of it have been taken down. There are therefore parts (pipes, tubes etc) that are open to the elements, and that includes salt water. Those parts are now useless. It would cost more than the market cap of the company to repair|rebuild the refinery. So, unless the Government stump up with the money (and it would be in excess of a billion), any reopening is never going to happen. If you want to give someone some stick about it, write to Megan Woods. Without a shadow of a doubt, the most inept and worst candidate to ever have the portfolio.

    It is not millions. It is about 20 billion and counting just to 2030.
    
    How are they going to avoid this expenditure? Either they are committed to the Paris Accord or they are not. The PM says he is committed.

    As Wayne Mapp repeatedly tells us (and he is right) a large part of our Community believes in Catastrophic Climate Change.
    Despite the IPCC saying very little is changing.
    Its needs a re-education solution.
    Appointing a new Climate Commissioner would be imperative if we were to do that.
    Some one here mentioned Sean Rush- an Expert Reviewer for the IPCC who worked on AR6 as a good choice.

Well now, isn’t this amazing, when all the expert consultants said it would run at a juicy profit. The Hundertwasser centre will probably rack up 10 million in losses by the end of the decade.
What really pleases me is despite this and all the other waste, they’ll keep rate rises under 20% this year. #gratefulforcouncilprudence.
What’s another $4k rates to me when we have an award winning new council HQ that saves ratepayers even more money? (According to consultants)

  I’m sure Kawakawa’s Hundertwasser toilets is similarly a burden on the local ratepayers, but it’s right in the middle of the main street, which is also SH1 and the main thoroughfare to the rest of the Far North.
  Plenty of people stop there to have a look and also visit the nearby shops, which pretty much constitutes the entire CBD.
  The museum in Whangarei is right off the beaten track, which you have to go looking for.
  The dunny in Kawakawa has turned the wretched little town into a bit of a tourist centre

    Hey MCos, have you recently visited the Kawakawa Hundertwasser toilets? I was there a few years ago, and they were a dump, dark, dingy and felt dirty. I’d only go there again if I were about to burst.
    As far as the rest of the main street was concerned, my wife and I struggled to find a decent restaurant to get lunch, and eventually settled on a miserable pie from a dingy cafe. There were a few eclectic shops that were worth looking into once, but I’d not go out of my way to pass through there again.

In 1845, Congress established Election Day as the Tuesday after the first Monday of November. The Act sought “to establish a uniform time” for Americans to cast their ballots for president. Historically, voters needed to provide a valid reason – such as illness or military service – to qualify for absentee ballots.

But Covid served as a pretext to overturn that tradition. Just 25% of votes in 2020 occurred at the polls on Election Day. Mail-in voting more than doubled. Key swing states eliminated the need to provide a valid reason to cast absentee ballots. The virus and racial justice became justifications to disregard verification methods like signature requirements.

Rejection rates for absentee ballots plummeted by more than 80% in some states as the Covid regime welcomed an unprecedented increase in mail-in voting. Politicians and media outlets ignored rampant voter fraud in the months leading up to the election. They treated concerns surrounding absentee voting as obscure conspiracy theories despite a bipartisan commission describing it as “the largest source of potential voter fraud” just a decade earlier.

  A qualified secondary school teacher is working for a diploma to become a primary teacher. To pass, she has to find 15 sources of maori creativity giving them their maori names plus macrons, and then translate and explain.
  
  Apart from all else, the macron is a hoax, I think all Maori educators know this, it looks like jobs for the boys and girls.
  The macron is applied with no obvious pattern, so by definition is arbitrary and a tax on scarce time for students.

What on earth is Easter Tuesday? When was this ever a thing?

Teachers says this has been around since the 1950s. I was a school student in the 80s and 90s, during the time when there were only 3 terms a year. There was no such thing as Easter Tuesday.

I will point out that for 12 weeks a year children have scheduled holidays and do not attend school. I do expect Teachers to use this time to have holidays, but they do not need to have the whole 12 weeks off. Whatever they gain from Easter Tuesday and teacher only days can be achieved during the 12 weeks children are not at school. There is still plenty of time remaining to take at least 6 weeks annual leave, which is more than can be said for the parents of most of the children they teach.

  Grizz when I started at the BNZ on 6 January 1964 Banks, Lawyers, Accountants, Insurance Offices and I think Government Offices were always closed on the Tuesday after Easter.

        Totally agree R. I worked in Admin at a school. Over the 12 weeks of holidays the teachers have each year, not counting teacher only days, it was extremely rare to see any of them at school in the holidays which I mostly worked through. I know some of them were off overseas the minute the school shut and I know of others who took on other jobs during the holidays while still earning their teacher salaries. Ghost is, no doubt, seeing admin staff.

        I go to a clinic and regularly see one of other of two GPs. The older guy is part owner and works a three day week. I saw him in January because the other guy who is generally easier to get an appointment with was taking the month off to holiday with his teacher wife.

        Both my son and his wife are teachers. Whenever I see them on the weekends one of them appears to be bashing away on their laptop doing schoolwork
        School teaching is not an easy gig, particularly if you want to get ahead.

  Because of changes in popular sentiments, they’ve been forced to move away from the “Israel First”, “legal immigration good”, and “socialism is the biggest threat” “conservative” platform of 2019/2020. It was an anachronism.

I know it is very sad for the family to lose the father and grandfather, but jumping in the pool when you yourself cannot swim? What were they planning next? Such deliberate acts should be met with deadly force by security. Why are we such wimps in this country ? Nobody fears the law any more, especially young people: the decline in school attendance and lousy results are entirely due to lack of respect for authority, including the teachers. Mind you, looking at some of the teachers they certainly don’t command or deserve respect: many seem to be mouthpieces for the Greens and Labour and unions and the gender-benders.

  The offender did it. Everyone who saw him can identify him as having done it. Why can’t the police charge him the same day, he goes to court Monday, convicted Wednesday, sentenced to 10 years’ hard labour / chain gang work on Central Plateau Thursday, appeal heard and denied Friday, locked up Saturday, and on the seventh day everyone can take a break.

  But we can have a massive police presence at a non violent paint protest but so called ‘equality’ types / trannies can riot and bash old women in public to almost literal acquiesence by Plod ( who were nearby) and very little in the way of commentary from the so called mainstream.
  
  A senior Labour MP can literally be jeered off a Hamas stage in Auckland and have to be escorted by a police posse away , with no commentary from Green MPs who followed him onto the stage but screeched genocidally .
  
  This is not normal , this is totally disfunctional.

  The perpetrator on this occasion was 62yo.
  So not a young person, not a school pupil
  The article was about lack of security in the Wairarapa Hospital A&E. The inference being in the good old days it wasn’t necessary
  I went to the WINZ in Masterton maybe thirteen years ago when I was resting between jobs.
  I struck up a conversation with a security guy who looked like he was supplementing his NZ Superannuation and would have been useless if push came to shove
  What all this has to do with truancy & discipline problem in our schools, I don’t know

    My post was about this, if you missed it:
    “Nobody fears the law any more”.
    Not kids, nor 62-year olds, or anyone in between.
    ( That 62-year old deliberately armed himself with a machete and went hunting his victim in the ED of a hospital: in other countries he would have been shot ).
    Because there are no consequences, and there is a severe lack of respect for people and property and values.
    Where teachers were once respected ( feared ? ) and bad behaviour resulted in chastisement or punishment, kids these days literally get away with assault as teachers cannot respond. Add to this lack of respect and lack of proper social behaviour the incredibly bad examples set by some of our politicians: their physical appearance ( dress, tattoos, hats, adornments ) as well as their language and general stupidity.
    How many of our kids are going to cope with real life is beyond me.

No wonder kids are playing up in class and getting away with it. Adults are just too bloody soft. Case in point: I’ve just been to a cafe for coffee. In comes a mother with two children (Another teacher only day apparently!) She just wants to get a take away coffee and tells the children. Youngest goes “I want, I want, I want” mother says “no”. He repeats it grizzling and stamping his feet. Mother
says “No”. So he repeats it again and guess what? Mother says “Yes, OK, what would you like?” So what did she teach him? Just keep at it and you’ll get what you want and I bet this will be a pattern for his life. Uggh!

    surfing: I have had kids – and am now a grandfather. Lifesgood is spot on. I remember vividly seeing scenes like that when I went supermarket shopping, often with my (then) young children.
    
    One time in particular I remember is a kid in front of us performing just as Lifes is describing – and the stupid mother eventually giving in. My children on the other hand asked once for a lolly pop and were told “Not today”.
    
    Astounded mother in front of me says “How do you get your kids to behave like that? Answer: “Consistency madam, and refusing to reward bad behaviour, as you have just done”.
    
    Cue stink eye from the silly bint, and a dramatic nose-in-the-air exit from Countdown Helensville.

  Yes, 4 and they learned very early in life that what NO and YES meant. Besides an occasional testing of the boundaries, we never had the problem lifesgood describes. My 2 grandchildren already know the boundaries, and they are 17 months and 3 1/2 years.
  Set the boundaries, be consistent and Mom & Dad must always be on the same page WRT the rules.

Buses may not be able to run after July 1st.

Thank goodness for all the Ratepayers money the last Labor led Council spent on cycle lanes, speed humps, and rainbow crossings. At least they will keep the city moving.
