I have banned from the Standard, apparently, for “lying”. I’m not sure what the lie is. This is despite the Standard holding itself up frequently as never moderating comments, except on very rare occasions for legal reasons.

If the Standard is saying that I was lying by asserting that some of the Standard’s bloggers are employed by the Labour Party, an affiliated union of the Labour Party, Parliamentary Services, or Ministerial Services, then I can take that as the Standard saying that none of the Standard’s authors are employed by the Labour Party, an affiliated union of the Labour Party, Parliamentary Services, or Ministerial Services.

If my “lie” that some of the Standard’s authors are employed by the Labour Party, an affiliated union of the Labour Party, Parliamentary Services, or Ministerial Services is incorrect, then I withdraw and apologise unreservedly.

But if it isn’t incorrect, then it’s not a lie. The Standard should be upfront and identify whether it’s a lie or not. The Standard has already accused me of lying. They should have the decency to back it up.

I’m still amazed that the Standard boys don’t see the parallels between the principles of transparency and honesty that were the hallmarks of the reasoning behind the EFA and the lack of transparency and honesty with the Standard and Labour.

They try to attack DPF however that fails dismally because he has a disclosure statement. They then try to link him with various parts of the National Party with no eveidence whatsoever. Yet disclosure on their part seems to be a dirty word as is their constant ad hominum attacks and unwillingness to debate the issues. Curious.

I enjoy reading the Standard (even if I vehemantly disaggree with most of their posts) and think that the likes of Tane and Nome are intelligent people with clever writing and a good ability to debate.

When the same spotlight that they cast upon DPF is cast on them however, they clam up and start with the personal attacks (Robinsod style). Why?

I’m a big fan of partisan debate and discussion. It’s the basis of democracy after all and blogs are a fantastic new medium for this. And while fully admitting that both left and right have their share of bloggers that take things a little too far, I’m more than a little disappointed that The Standard lads have descended from adult behaviour to playground mud slinging.

C’mon lads, walk your own talk, eh? Debate the issue rather than the man. Publically declare the Standard to have no affiliation with the Labour Party (financially or otherwise) and lets put this bloody issue to bed and get on with what we all like doing – having a good debate over the politics of NZ.

On a more serious note, what about ol’ Heath Ledger? Didn’t see that one coming.

Anyway, is the New Zealand Rugby League taking policy and comms advice from Mark Burton/Parekura Horomia?

One would think so, given the current round of shite after shite it finds itself in. Or perhaps Tane Tutae works for the NZRL (gets to hang out with real blokes to try and develop his ‘mate’ persona, and further enhance his working class cred by posing as a leaguey) which would explain why the standard is having so much trouble coming up with a disclosure statement…the poor boy has enough on his plate already.

There’s no lie. I know that without even reading the particular exchange. Under the Electoral Finance Act, 2007 (EFA), Can you advise me please whether The Standard Blog constitutes a:
commercial blog;
a Labour Party election expense;
a breach of the EFA because it fails to disclose who runs it, or provide an address?
Am I correct in assuming that if it is a non-commercial blog, it is exempt from any disclosure under the EFA, but if there is a proven link between it and the Labour party (ie it was paid for, or authorised by The NZLP) then it should be declared as an election expense? If so, under what conditions, if any would it presently be in contravention of the EFA?
If it is in contravention of the EFA at present, would you please advise me what conditions it must meet in order to comply?
If I wished to make a complaint about the blog under the Electoral Finance Act, can you advise me what aspects of the Act that The Standard, were it to be proven to be a Labour Party communication, I should be considering?
There is another aspect I wish to ask you about, if i may. If The Standard blog is hosted or run by members of a particular union, or the Labour Party, and this was done without the knowledge of their employers, would the EFA require that some form of disclosure from the employer be produced to clarify that they were unaware of such activities, should a complaint be made?

Our failing health system….

A mate of mine spent 48 hours sitting around in hospital over xmas/new year waiting for an operation to fix his busted elbow. I was in visiting him and he told me his theory on how to fix the public health system… It’s a simple solution and I think it has a lot of merit.

He suggested that all MP’s and Dept of Health employees (and their immediate families) should not be allowed to have private health insurance. Simple as that… if the MP’s want to claim that we have a first world health service then they should be required to rely on it for their own health care.

I think he’s onto it….

Have you seen “Candy” (outclassed by Abbie Cornish) let alone “Brokeback Mountain” – a mundane love story which no one dared say was crap simply because it portrayed a homosexual relationship? If his co-lead had been a woman it’d have been panned. Johnny Depp would act rings around him (if we forgive him “Pirates”). Even Ewan McGregor (if we forgive him “Star Wars”) and any number of young, lesser known actors.

When David Cunliffe broke his foot last month he went into Auckland hospital to get it fixed no one even recognised their new Minister.

Other than a couple of places in Auckland that offer private accident services in the rest of the country if you have an accident or require acute care you are likely to be in the state system irrespective of whether you have private insurance or not.

Yes, Jenny Shipley went in one day complaining about chest pain and was immediately admitted for a bypass. The more of this sort of thing that happens because MP’s can’t sneak off for private care the better….

Imagine the outrage if the PM couldn’t travel because she was on a waiting list for a knee operation….

New Topic – Luddites at work.
Ms Kedgley of the Green Party is really a campaigner for unsafe food.
Sue Kedgley, Safe Food Spokesperson for the Green Party, declared today that ‘The Poultry Code is Paltry’, claiming that ‘the new Code of Practice for processing of poultry, while a small step in the right direction, fails to include some very simple measures to stem the tide of Campylobacter contamination of chicken meat being sold to New Zealanders.’

However, she failed to mention that the New Zealand Food Safety Authority web page reports that ‘Irradiation is the only completely effective reported treatment for reduction in levels of Campylobacter. Irradiation of packaged fresh or frozen poultry products at 1.5 to 3.0 kg has been approved by the FDA in the USA and several other countries. Currently, prohibited in New Zealand and unlikely to be approved due to consumer resistance.’

The reason food irradiation is prohibited in New Zealand is that the Sue Kedgley’s Green Party is steadfastly opposed to it for any food and has mounted a campaign of fear which unfortunately has affected New Zealand attitudes to this safe and effective means of sterilizing food.

The Green Party would rather stand by their luddite opposition to all things nuclear than prevent this disease.

I have been hospitalised by campylobacter and It’s not very nice – being reamed out with barbed wire is the best description that comes to mind.

So if Ms Kedgley is serious about protecting thousands of New Zealanders, including young children, from this nasty infection, the solution is simple, safe and proven. Irradiate the chickens between farm and shop.

But I suspect Ms Kedgley will not let facts get in the way of her prejudice and will continue her alarmist campaign against safe food.

Nicely said Owen.
However last year I also had campylobacter, wasn’t hospitalised though. What I found very good from it though was I lost 10kg in 5 days. So once and a while I think a lot more of us should get it, sadly I have since put that 10kg’s back on so I might be looking for another little dose soon.

meanwhile the Very Double Standard continues on their defamatory attacks on the FSC because we have the temerity to publish our donors…..whilst they remain funded (in the absence of any denial) by the Labour Party and anonymous despite backing a law for others to have to list their names and addresses.

Speaking of the health system, my brother (who lives in Aussie) became a dad for the first time last night. Because he pays for his own healthcare via a plan (and gets the associated tax credits for it), he, his wife, and my new niece came out of the whole birth experience and were whisked upstairs to their “suite” – two double beds, spa pool, satellite TV and breakfast menu. Bastards.

Contrast that with my wife and I, who have paid health insurance for a decade now. When our first nipper was due, we had heard the horror stories about Wellington Hospital and asked if there was any where we could go private (other than the Green Party-lets-have-it-in-the-paddling-pool-in-the-kitchen) and were told no.

Having a baby at Wellington Hospital is as close as I have come to visiting a Bosnian field hospital at the height of their civil war. Add to that the Middle Eastern trainee gynaecologist who refused to check out my wife’s privates to make sure they had returned to normal transmission (he wouldn’t even take a peek), nurses who refused to help her go to the loo etc., and its just another reason why people are buggering off to Aussie.

My brother, incidentally, pays only a tiny bit more per annum than I do for health cover.

If a service is centrally funded and is delivered as an entitlement then standards inevitably slip. Managers have no focus on customer service and there’s no need to do anything to ensure that customers are not lost to the competition. The solution is simple, put the money in the hands of the customers (call it vouchers) and let them choose, same to apply to education. Our experience has been weeks and weeks of delay as the “file” was passed between various departments, lost a couple of times and rebuilt (at who knows what additional cost) we got a result using inside contacts and some old fashioned table thumping persistance.

Who would have thought there was a solution to campylobacter, but if it involves nuclear power it’s unsafe.

Exactly – No. We were told the same and it was incidentally under National. What a crock of shit that is – birth is one size fits all. (However I must say the medical team and neo natal care we received was excellent with a traumatic birth.) The facilities… it was priceless having it explained to us that as we were required to stay more than 1 night we wouldn’t be entitled to the 50 free nappies for early departure…..

This is public health in NZ – if only the MP and Dept of Health and hospital staff and their families were not entitled to use private health care at all we might have a decent system.

Wehad a child at Waitakere 18 months ago. Both the service expertise and post-natal care were excellent, and the facilities well used in general.
The ante-natal care was also top notch. The Midwife also was as good as they get.
So we are three satisfied customers.

IP, even if what you say about some of the Standard’s bloggers are employed by the Labour Party is not true that does not make it a lie – you could simply be incorrect. If Parliament used the same stardard there would be a lot of MPs forced to resign for misleading the house.
