Tribunal Reform

Sir Goffrey Palmer and the Commission are right on the money with their report calling for a rationalisation of the 100+ tribunals in .

First of all there would be potentially huge efficiencies in having all tribunals supported by one core agency, rather than have 100 different sets of staff.

The suggestion of a “heads of tribunals” who would provide leadership and co-ordination over all tribunals has merit.  They could help set policies and processes so there is greater consistency.  Also I suspect they would become a good source of advice to Ministers on reappointments also.

Having tribunals more independent from the departments they hear appeals from is also a very good idea.

They are going to do a further report on the reform options.  I hope the post 2008 takes it on board and makes changes.
