I do feel a tad sorry for her. She resigned after doing something wrong, yeah? (Getting involved in the application process of family members while head of the immigration service?) And she didn’t actually have a PHD, as was stated on her resume, right? BUT, before making the poor judgement call and getting involved in the application process, she must have done a fairly good job, right?

She rose through the ranks of the public service well enough under both National and Labour, I think, so a few people must have thought she was doing a good job. And if she’s done a good job up until getting involved with applications of family members, it’s not particularly relevant to criticise her for her whole career.

Now, there’s no acceptable excuse for getting a job under somewhat false pretences, and it was stupid to get involved in the application process, but it seems to me that a poor start and a poor end don’t make the middle poor, if you get what I’m saying.

JiveKitty – you are a bit naive I think. There is an enquiry planned because the place has been in trouble for some years and news today that there is a claim that workers have to meet quota’s for letting immigrants in (god – what next) means that the core is possibly pretty rotten.
I think you will find that not only has Thompson been ‘hanging crooked’ at the start, the end and all the way thru, but that she has plenty of associates who have acted the same.
Obviously by the time she basically orderred the Dept to let her relations in, she was well practiced in the art of ignoring the law.

I sincerely hope that the pending claim against the probation service succeeds, because that will open the door for claims against public service staff who think they ARE the law, and that the actual law is something rather removed from them (as Thompson obviously did)!!
The first place I would start is the Justice Dept – who are probably the most disorganised outfit in the country and full of – well I wont say liars – but they are very good at not telling the truth, or saying something that is misleading

I must say I always had my doubts about Ms Thompson . Not that I ever suspected she was telling pokies about her PhD

But the old antenna honed from 35 years of employing more people than most have hot dinners did twitch a number of times.

Something wasnt quite right She all the signs of someone is easily able to con others by saying all the right things at the right time when below the surface is little of substance

Firstly, I’m with Barry on this one. Not inclined to feel the least bit sorry for Thompson. Secondly, I seem to recall a lot of kiwiblog (ir)regulars in high dudgeon over this latest example of “Liarbore korruption” blah, blah. So i thought it might be helpful to all concerned to point out the bipartisan potential that this issue has.

I’m still reserving a certain amount of judgement for the inquiry. While she was clearly wrong to claim a PhD she never got, she did spend seven years at LSE and I suspect was very close to getting one. I do regard that fraud (and it is still fraud) as different to the Maori TV guy who literally invented degrees and institutions he had never studied at.

Its amazing how many get away with CV fraud. Especially given in this age the ease with which one can check an alumni association or with an institution directly to verify claims.

In the olden days it was much more difficult Im talking steam powered times when you had to write to an institution and if it was overseasa write the countries government to check if it actually existed.

Still after making a mistake or 2 in the early days one soon learnt the benefits of checking and duble checking before hiring.

And of course now with the Socialists policy of ‘once you hire you cant fire” its even more important to make sure you havnet got a PAM on the payroll.

I may be a bit naive, but I don’t recall anything else really being proved. We’ll see after the inquiry. I don’t like the idea of guilt by association, or assuming guilt before it is proved. While some guilt has been shown, I don’t see it, yet (it may come), for her whole career. That is all on why I see it as unfair.

As for Philu, you really are clutching at straws. Why don’t you try to bring reason into an argument? This is not really an issue in which John Key is involved, and taking cheap shots at him just because of your political view really does very little for the debate, and annoys people. Of course, others stooping to your level doesn’t help either, because I suspect what you desire is a response at said level.

Wow, I’m off to revise my CV immediately. I was very close to getting elected on the NZF list before it all went pear shaped so I’ll just fudge it a bit and claim I was an MP. I contributed extensively to a PhD study on teleworking and was interviewed by Jack Vowles for a book on politics and featured (disparagingly, naturally) in Michael Laws’ quickly-remaindered tome, so I’ll add doctor and author to my list of achievements.

Oh, and I almost got to have sex with Miss World once (well, I was her official escort to a function).

But hey, close enough is good enough in MaryAnneWorld, right?

One could talk about the whys and wherefores of Ms Thompson’s work until the cows come home. No doubt some people will.

The fact is she’s a liar, and a big one, and a consistent one. I’d like to think that being a liar would disqualify her, and anybody else, from a position in the p-u-b-l-i-c s-e-r-v-i-c-e. It’s the least we can expect.

I agree with that sentiment kiwitoffee.

It makes you wonder how many more senior figures in the public service might too be holding the truth from their employers. At least it makes John Key’s task of reducing waste in the public sector an easier one.
