Three questions for John Key:
1) Is the National Party going to lose the election because compared to the hard-out superior political machinery of the Labour Party, they are a bunch of pansies?
2) Why doesn’t National get their collective fingers out and stop being such a bunch of pushovers?
3) Is the left correct – there is a ‘secret agenda’ but actually it is to lose the election?

Which would explain 1 and 2….

I’m beginning to feel like the odds are completely stacked against the right in the election.
(And it’s not called the right for nothing)

TV1 and TV3 are completely left leaning, exhibit A Duncan Garner’s pathetic excuse for a story
over Bill English being recorded saying “winning is everything”

Listening to talkback last night Pat Britton couldn’t contain his excitement over the dip in the polls, and even suggested
that because a well known blogger was slow on posting recently that somehow he was not being fair to Winston.
Note to Pat, David is not at his desk at the moment.

A couple of nights before he had our Minister of Education crowing about how they were now the first government to be debt free – guess he isn’t part of the inner circle. Apparently Wishart calls him the Artful Dodger, seems like a very
befitting name under the circumstances.

Sometimes it seems that only those of us who are reading these blogs are properly informed, thanks to the great
information provided by David, Whaleoil, The Hive, No Minister and Busted Blonde and others.

So far in this election, the left have secretly filmed the National Party Conference and the Finance Minister has stolen all
of our money so that National will struggle to do anything as government.

But all our stupid MSM can do, is ask Helen what she thinks of the secret recordings, and never ever ask her or any of the other politicians on the left any hard questions.
Some people even think that Winston is now in the clear, because the SFO didn’t lay any charges.

Say what you like about the States but they have a robust media, that digs dirt on both sides.
Ours is working only for one side.
Helen has no intention of winning this election fairly, but will release another secret recording days before the election,
just enough to tip some undeciders her way so she can win another Term.

Is anyone else feeling a real sense of injustice about what’s happening here?
And how can we get the truth out to properly inform people, when our media won’t?

The scandal that is the mismanagement of the NZ economy, seems to have escaped your attention.

Deficits for a decade, maybe National do actually want to throw the election. Stranger things have happened.

Something is about to change voters minds quite soon. Just before the election.

I thought Key’s campaign opening last night was very very good. I got dizzy watching Clark with the background swirling around too much.

Who the hell is that political lecturer from Akld Uni doing the “impartial” analysis? Cabbage. He couldn’t have used more pro Clark and negative Key buzz words in his 3.30 mins if he tried.

Appalling effort on impartiality from TV1.

Just as well no-one watches them

I have to agree with Lee C. Why the hell isn’t National on the attack? Hells bell there is now plenty to attack Labour over. I have written about this on my blog.
There are no medals for second place in this election- John, Bill, and the Nats in general- pull finger, get off your arses, light a fire cracker up your backside and get going! Banzi! Attack!

Yes- the left are exposing themselves more and more as crooks and cronyists, dishonest scum who will do anything for power, and as you say, the people who read blogs know this, but the general public does not because the mainstream media are crooks too and all part of the Labour Party and are brazenly assisting Klark and her gang in their deceit.

We are in the grip of a bunch of crooks who want to make New Zealand a soviet style socialist totalitarian state, and they just might, through the deceit and deception we are now witnessing, achieve that objective. That’s what is making you uneasy. The knowledge that this dishonesty is going on, at the same time as you seem powerless in preventing it.

The left are the enemies of freedom, and their soldiers are NZ’s mainstream media. The media, TV One and TV Three are the stormtroopers of socialism. Kept in the pocket of government by their innate political sympathies but also by Klark’s numerous bureaucracies, “commissions”, and their associated “public good” advertising budgets. The duplicitous propagandists calling themselves journalists and reporters are just cheating partisan fraudulent scum, who know that their financial well being depends upon the election of the Labour Party.

At the risk of sounding like that idiot Phool….I told you so!.

For months now I have been uneasy about the campaign strategy the Nat’s have decided on, it is spineless and pathetic.

Can you imagine what Labour would be doing if the roles were reversed, Labour would be attacking the Nat’s about the constant stream of sleaze and corruption that has followed the PM over the last nine years, they would be non stop in reminding people that the Nat’s stole $880,000 from the tax payer, they would be merciless in their attacks on waste in the public sector and brutal in the way they attacked political appointees in the public service.

Most importantly they would be attacking the biased right wing media at every opportunity.

The Nat’s need to understand that the very future of NZ depends on this election, we simply cannot afford another three years of corruption and mind blowingly incompetent mismanagement of the public purse.

Voters in New Zealand do not need reminding about what is bad about Labour, they do need reassuring that National is a safe choice.

What PhilU needs to get his head around is the economic reality.

It actually does not matter who wins the election in terms of economic change in New Zealand. There are not going to be enough tax payers to maintain the lifestyle of the tax recipients (public servants included).

So PhilU, enjoy your lifestyle while you can as even the Labour party will have to cut state spending in the future. The pie has shrunk and will shrink even further in the near future. There will not be much of a slice left for the likes of you.

Even under your much vaunted Labour/Green coalition.

Another bout of rogernomics is on the way!!

I’m with Glutaemus on this. John Key is actually too much of a nice guy to suffer the inevitable fate that will be his if he WINS the election. Democracymum and the others are quite right about the media, we are being taken for fools, the media actually have no interest in the current socialist government actually paying at the polls for the wreck they have made of the economy and NZ society; it is contrary to their whole worldview.

“Philu” is completely beyond the pale, talking as he does about the “economic carnage caused by greed is good philosophy”, completely prevaricating about the fact that we have had 9 years of socialism and income redistribution. But look, most of the media actually thinks the way “philu” does, that is how stuffed we are as a country. If John Key does become PM, does anyone here believe that the media won’t give him 3 years of hell, regardless of what he does?

I am afraid the future of NZ rests on either the media learning its lesson, or Kiwis coming to completely mistrust the media, and what’s more, mistrust most of what they are told by anyone paid by the government, including schoolteachers. Whether we get 3 more years of Heleban now, or an interlude with a paralysed National government followed by the unleashing of the 4th Reich of the Heleban, clearly we have to actually go bust as a country, with the government running out of creditors willing to lend it money, before it will be accepted as “common knowledge” among Kiwis that socialism, and only socialism, is responsible for the whole mess, because there will be nothing else left to blame. A lot will depend on how long the socialists can get away with blaming everything on “the great free-market-caused crash of 2008”, or blaming everything on global warming, or the weather, or foreigners, or religion, or businessmen, or “refuseniks”, or whatever.

But of course, meanwhile, the media will have progressed from being willing allies, to being explicitly regulated and controlled by the Heleban, blogs like this one will have been banned or regulated out of existence, talk radio likewise. So it may be “too late”, thus does the feckless “free” West fall.

I think s.russell is right about the Nats putting more work into reassuring voters they are a safe pair of hands. The global financial meltdown has created a lot of uncertainty, and when voters feel the future is uncertain they will be more inclined to go with what they know. Cullen’s “prudent” management of the economy and Labour’s social safety nets will be seen by many out in the heartlands as the safer choice. Perhaps this explains the swing in TV3’s poll yesterday?

The Economy Numbers are being overlooked by the MSM.

All we get is constant sound bites of HC talking about trust, whilst looking smug, and JK and BE on the back foot saying Labour are Pathetic.

What Labour recognise is that the ‘sheeple’ associate HC with Trust. (Not because she has an ounce of Veracity in her.)

And on the other hand they link ‘pathetic’ with JK. It is a real front row sledging situation. Labour are pulling back poll points, and

frankly it doesn’t matter a jot.

From now on JK, BE, and any other Nat or ACT spokesperson have simply got to start using re-assuring words, like trust, safe hands, and the like.

Sarah Palin said the other day, its hard for her to confront people who buy ink by the barrel. This is freedom’s biggest challenge. Breaking the grip of the left media political bloc, as powerful a political influence as has ever existed. The politicians cannot do it without our help. If you value freedom, you must attack the media.

You must tell your friends. Stop buying their papers. Stop watching their channels. Stop listening to them on radio. Most importantly, if you’re in business, don’t advertise with them. Sure, you might need to advertise, but we have to starve these bastards out. They’re already suffering, from natural economic fluctuations, but also I am sure because many people feel as I do and will not spend another dollar supporting these soviet style propagandist scum.

They can be beaten and their grip on power can be broken. Sure, they’re buying ink by the barrel, but we have the internet, (and the left will eventually take that too if we let them), and we can make a difference. Key and McCain may be weak and ineffectual, and betray us so often, but that only means we must do more ourselves. Keep talking. Keep spreading the word. Keep calling the media/ left power bloc for the corrupt gang of totalitarians they are. Believe me, when you have right on your side, just expressing your opinion loudly and persistently is not as ineffective as you might think.

All the more reason to attack Labour! If voters go with what they know they’ll be getting a govt and economic manager who has never managed during a crisis, never managed govt during the 1997 Asian financial meltdown, has made quite clear he will not restrain govt spending, has a past record which shows he will not deliver on their future tax cuts promises, will not expand Kiwi saver to the lowest paid, will not give a damn about the economic consequences of the ETS, a coalition partner which considers farmers to be devils with horns and tails that need to drained of their profits and chained up by red tape and broken and a Labour party leadership that has broken the law so many times that such actions are now almost regarded as normal and hardly worth commenting on.
So.. what should National do?
ATTACK!

P.S Nats are doing damn well in the ‘heartland’ by that I mean provincial centers and small towns, especially throughout the South Island. Its urban Christchurch and Wellington etc that they need to get to work and of course the city that really decides who wins NZ elections- Auckland.

Sure, we’re stuffed as a country, and both you and I Phil Best, know the reason for this is that the right have been weak and ineffectual. Ideologically confused and manipulated by leftmedia, a media many on the right stubbornly refuse to acknowledge as their enemy. Sarah Palin comes along, a real person ready to challenge the intellectual/ leftmedia totalitarian power bloc, and many on the right blindly gulp down the kool aid distributed by the media and attack her more intensely than they do the left. The common factor is that parties of the left are benefiting, whether in office or not, and the common cause can only be global financial/economic developments. The deeper analysis is that parties of the left offer security while parties of the right offer opportunity. In a climate of fear such as these events are creating, people instinctively turn to the left: towards the parties that are most likely to protect them if the economy falls into the crapper. Instead of wanting to get themselves free of Nanny state, they will say “Help! Help! Nanny! Save me from the scary monsters!”

Note too: these polls reflect the mood of a week ago. Over the past week things have gotten much worse. How bad are they going to get? We don’t know. But even if markets all rally tomorrow, huge damage has been done, and confidence has been perilously undermined.

Unfortunately for National, fear trumps every other emotion……”

To which I would add a repeat of my earlier comments…….we will need to get into a jam that can ONLY be blamed on Socialism before we will wake up. And we WILL get into this jam, under the next Heleban Government over either the next 3 years or the following 3, 6 or 9 after John Key’s temporary government has had 3 years of hell from the slimy snivelling socialist lapdog media. I would prefer to just get it over with. If National gets 3 years of government now, the socialists will use that as their excuse for things not being rosier, for the following decade or more.

To all of those people that thought complaints about anti-terrorist legislation, which was rushed through parliaments around the world in the aftermath of the Twin Towers collapse, were unwarranted: Britain has just used anti-terrorist legislation to seize UK assets belonging to one of Icelands largest banks.

I think that justifies just about all of the claims about why we shouldn’t give governments more power when things go a little wrong, because they’ll abuse it later when something else goes wrong. The “anti-terrorist” legislation has now had the precedent set for what it can be used for in the UK and that precedent is scary.

I’m sorry Redbaiter, but even as a fairly conservative person who would vote for McCain if I was an American, Sarah Palin as McCain’s choice for Vice President is an insult to the American people.

She is being attacked by the media because with her current level of experience she is manifestly unqualified for the position of Vice President. It is great to be able to appeal to ‘Joe Sixpack’ but even ‘Joe Sixpack’ knows that while they can relate to her, and probably even like her on a personal level, it is another thing to put her in such a position of power. If Palin had more experience then she could be a good choice, but the interviews, debates and speeches I have seen so far indicate that she is simply out of her depth and she shouldn’t be there. Being President (which is always a possibility) is about being able to clearly articulate a message and get things done in Washington. McCain has proven he can do it, Palin simply has not.

I can appreciate the political savvy of choosing her as it gave McCain something to appeal to the more socially conservative part of the Republican base, but there were and are better choices out there than Palin.

I wrote: “Randal, whatever you think of my posts, one thing I have not done is resort to personal insults as a form of argument. It seems to me that you just can’t engage with someone who has a different opinion to yours.

All I have done in this instance is to ask a perfectly reasonable question about why you are not putting anything up about the Dale Jones police investigation. I think this is perfectly reasonable and thought you might actually do some comparisons and contrasts with Steve’s situation. I notice you have not at all disputed my accusation that you would be all over National like a rash in the same circumstances. Therefore, I take it that you agree with me on that point.

Therefore, I think the evidence in this respect suggests that the name of this blog is one word short. Instead of “The Standard” you should be calling yourself “The Double Standard”.”

This is what I mean when I said and “many on the right blindly gulp down the kool aid distributed by the media and attack her more intensely than they do the left.” She is being attacked by the media for one reason only and that is that she is a real threat to the power bloc they are part of. You display the exact mental weakness that the left exploit so well, and its why the so called right have been losing for three decades or more. If the “media” were ever non partisan, and going to attack any one at all on the grounds of “lack of experience”, they would be attacking Obama and Biden,who are both far behind Palin in that respect. You’re apparently too dull to even perceive this obvious bigotry.

Most people who follow politics see bias in the media.

Both lefties and conservatives see bias against them.

I’d suggest it would be fairly easy to list all the political journos and for both sides to come to broad agreement as to whom represented each side. Some of the very best journos, like political scientists, are those whom you can’t place into either category. Templeton is one of those.

So it undeniably exists. Is it a problem though provided media organisations employ both sides? NewstalkZB has both Leighton and Soper, The Herald has O’Sullivan and Misa.

It’s when an organisation gets infested with the damn things that I have a problem. RadioNZ and TVNZ being two current examples.

The thing that really annoys me is lack of coverage of screamingly important stories and lack of depth. It’s a global phenomena and is completely unhelpful in that by doing this the media have abrogated their significant role in educating and informing the public. I mean hello, there are fucking reasons why we have so many uneducated sheep in society and one of them is to do with the fact that someone feeds them so much mindless pap. Continuously, year after year. It’s self-evident from the rise and rise of the blogosphere there is global unsatiated demand for detailed serious information on any number of topics. All you have to do is package it properly and it will sell, big-time. Why they can’t see this is beyond me.

The are trapped in their own degenerative cycle. Dumbing themselves down further and further each day, fewer intelligent people pick up their rags or swicth to their channel/ station, so they’re forced to sink deeper into the socialist sewer.

BTW, don’t think that Leighton Smith isn’t controlled. IMHO, he’s forbidden from expressing his true feelings on political issues by the management policies of his station. In line with the strategy I address in my first paragraph.

“chrisw76”, I have to agree with Redbaiter. If you are a “conservative”, why the F. do you not appreciate the “experience” that Sarah Palin so obviously DOES bring to the table? It is one thing to have spent years in politics, making accommodations with the machine, and it is quite another to have risen rapidly through the ranks precisely because one is different, and fresh, and principled, and challenged the status quo, representing solid, rock-base conservatism all the way. If you DON’T see Sarah Palin as an answer to prayer, you are NOT a “conservative”, go and join ACORN.

As for Obama becoming President of the US, what “experience” does HE have? A childhood and youth of mentoring from a Communist radical, a move to Chicago precisely because that is where the Black identity politics game is centered, years of poodling along on the Left extreme of the “Chicago machine”, serving on an educational board dedicated to anti-Western, Anti-Judeo-Christian agendas with Bill Ayers the WeatherUnderground man, serving on the boards of charities that handed tens of millions to Mr Ayers causes, his columns in a radical Left community newspaper that could have been penned by Chris Trotter, years training ACORN staff in the tactics of shaking down banks for loans and “affirmative action” and subprime lending to the disadvantaged, his connections to Democratic subprime lending advocacy and the lavish support he enjoys from Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, not to mention the church he attended for 20 years, and the pastor who christened his own kids, not to mention the Chicago radical Left strongarm tactics by which he got the Democratic Senate candidate nomination…….BAH.

If that man becomes President of the USA, the whole WORLD is doomed.

I never said that Obama didn’t suffer from the same problem and in fact said that if I was an American voter McCain would probably be my choice. What I did say was that from examining her speeches, debates and interviews I found that she was out of her depth in comparison to her running mate and that he could have chosen better. My real problem is that I don’t think she is a threat to any Washington power broker as they would just run rings around her.

If you disagree with this, then feel free to provide some actual evidence and rationale as to why Palin is a good choice for VP. You might be right that the media misrepresents her. I don’t know because I don’t follow American media that closely. What I have done is gone to the source and formed an opinion. That opinion happens to be similar to that formed by the media. It is quite possible that they simply don’t like her because she is the Republican VP. On the other hand they could have looked at the same things I did and come to the conclusion that she isn’t the best person for the role. Hard to say really…

Dunno if they’re dumbing themselves down RB. IMO they’re focused on short-term commercial imperatives which has resulted in them rationalising the decision to forsake the opportunity to improve the product offering over time.

TVNZ years ago screened at 11:30PM an excellent doco series on the history of oil – the origins of Standard Oil, Mobil, BP and Shell – written by the same guy who did Commanding Heights.

It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy that such a show will get low ratings. Coverage of the second coming would get low ratings at that time of night.

The trouble is, at this point in time, they’ve done prime-time pap for so long that people have become educated to accept nothing less.

What they don’t see is that they could turn this around by doing the exact opposite and over time it would prove more commercially successful since by definition they’re always aiming at the highest earning demographics. All they have to do is to accept that for awhile this will be unprofitable but the morons can’t see that. They’re idiots.

Like others I am unable to understand why National doesn’t attack Liabour on ‘TRUST’ they have so many exposed examples of betrayal of trust in their tenure that need to be reiterated time and time again. We now have them protesting ‘prudent management’ by Cullen when he has not only bought a loss making Railway at four times its value and in spite of Treasury recommendations not to, but also has purchase a South Island farm valued by the Goverment at $40 million because of its view and then taken it out of production in order to set it apart for campers and picnickers.

I am familiar with Fox content but watch it rarely since I consider it’s a transparent propaganda tool aimed at morons.

I like Investigate, but haven’t read the others.

Oh in case any one is confused about saying that I lean conservatively, I mean fiscal conservative, not social conservative. I honestly don’t give a damn about what people get up to in the bedroom, think drugs should be legalised (and taxed) [WTF should I pay excise tax on a bottle of Pinot Noir when Cannabis escapes tax free], think the abortion issue is grey not black and white, don’t favour the death penalty as an option (though would probably shoot to kill an intruder in my own house), and have not been particularly religious since I noticed that power corrupts at the age of 5.

I have been thinking of essaying along the following lines for a while. This is an analysis of the “Socialism versus Freedom” issues that the lefty trolls like Philu go on about.

Every country in the world has a “Gross National Income”, that is made up of the totals of everyone’s income. In all Western countries, this income gets “redistributed” to some extent, plus there are services we all enjoy, provided by government in return for taxation.

In a very poor country with NO “redistribution” and very low incomes, it is quite clear to see if most people earn $500 per year, their quality of life is determined by what they can get for $500; plus, they may have the benefit of a road or two and a well or two and suchlike, provided by their government or society.

In a typical Western country, we all get to benefit from extensive infrastructure, this is possibly worth a few grand per annum to each of us. We get security, a police force. We get free education, worth a few grand per year when we’re being educated. We get free health services, worth thousands to those who get them. This is already a form of “redistribution” as we all get the benefit of these things equally while our contributions are unequal.

Then we get straight-out income redistributive policies where cash itself is transferred from those who earn it, to some who have not. We also get subsidies targeted at some people for the purposes of addressing a disadvantage they might have. Subsidised housing, transport, and so on. Then of course, there is a retirement income.

I was reminded recently of some writings of Roger Douglas 20 years ago, in which he pointed out that some of the most disadvantaged people in our society, say a solo mother with 3 children, actually enjoy in the region of $100,000 worth of expenditure on their lives. (And he wrote that 20 years ago). Now, take a society in which there was no such redistribution or subsidy; and imagine how well someone could live if they had 100 grand per year with which to PROVIDE FOR THEMSELVES. In fact, we don’t even need to imagine how well somebody DOES live on 100 grand, who has health insurance and who sends their kids to a private school, even when they ARE paying the tax level required of an “income-redistributive” society.

This raises the obvious question, and socialists themselves need to be asking themselves this question, if the independent earner of 100 grand can live so well, why does the RECIPIENT of the same MONEY transferred from the taxpayer, mostly provided in goods and services, have to live so badly?

THIS is the achilles heel of socialism that Sir Roger was bright enough and honest enough to latch onto early in his otherwise red-diaper career. Anyone who has not confronted these realities is either ignorant, perhaps deliberately ignorant, or so consumed by “soak the rich” envy that they simply do not care about outcomes for society.

Sir Roger, the evil bogeyman stooge of the “exploit-the-poor” business roundtable, likes the idea of just giving the solo mum the 100 Grand. For which he is demonised and slagged off against and condemned to political oblivion.

tknorriss – I’ve had a similar rocky relationship with the VDS (Very Double Standard) although in fairness I never went in with a completely open mind – but did go in wishing to see if alternative views might be entertained. They aren’t any more than sonic is here. SO, I just got to the stage, where I decided to stop commenting there. I visit and I read, but have come to the conclusion that they are uninterested. But there is more. I am convinced that the Standard was set up by Labour and the EPMU, and is hosted and run by personnel from the above, and was set up with the main intention of smearing John Key and using its presence to feed such suggestions about National to the media, thereby using a ‘faux-paranoia’ meme to persuade swinging voters that National is evil.
SO now I just take the piss out of them on my own blog (while i’m still entitled to have one, because after Labour get back in, it will be subject to improved regulation under a revised EFA, just like kiwiblog will be – But not the VDS, of course as that one will survive intact as ‘in the public interest’.)
This is just one of the reasons that I am so pissed off with National Party being a bunch of naif ‘soft-cocks’ who appear happy to take whatever Labour serve up through the media, ‘sans-lubricante’.
Labour are just better at it than National.

Have you seen Commanding Heights PhilBest?

It’s an excellent background to the guy who Douglas got his ideas from. Thatcher, Reagan and Milton Freidman were all students of this guy who is called Hayek. He is of similar status to Keynes.

Not sure if I completely buy this bit of Commanding Heights but its explanation of the origins of the belief from the left as to the evils of capitalism is as follows.

In the 80’s you’ll recall the South American debt crisis. One of Friedman’s accolytes went to Argentina during Pinochet’s regime to implement Hayek’s reforms and he did this during Pinchet’s regime. The lefties seized on this opportunity to create through proaganda, a Pavlovian association, so in the minds of the public there was no difference between on the one hand those reforms and on the other hand that particularly brutal distatorship.

I don’t buy the Commanding Heights these that this was the origin because lefties have been around for a long time, but I have no doubt that over time many lightweight lefty morons have been sucked in by such tactics.

What puzzles me about the lefty anti-capitalism sentitment is that the laws of economics are quite rational and understandable: i.e. it’s not rocket science. There are millions of lefties who are intelligent enough to understand them but it’s as if there’s a short-circuit in their wiring and they just can’t get past the fact that economics is not just about ‘oh the humanity.’

It’s as if the fools are fucked in the head.

What you say about the Left tying Capitalism to Fascism goes back well before Pinochet, they do it with Hitler too. The trouble is, those Left/Right analyses break down when there are so many traits not shared by non-Left movements. There is no nexus between Hitler and Libertarianism at all, and very little nexus between Libertarianism and “Paleo-Conservatism”, i.e. the religious/tradition-celebrating Right.

Making the alternative to Socialism, Fascism, in the minds of the ignorant majority, is one of the most cunning ploys of the Left via their control of media and education. Again, read Hayek “The Intellectuals and Socialism” to realise why Socialism has got control of these institutions.

I find the feminism issue an interesting example of the influence of the mechanisms that are used to influence public thinking. By getting control of the universities and using the media to wrap the issue in humanitarian terms they disguise the fact that the issue did not originate in the 60’s but in Soviet Russia in the 20’s.

This disguise has given it a much greater uptake in the West and it’s deliberate and transparent manipulation.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not commenting on the merits or otherwise of the movement, simply on the mechanisms used by social engineers to manipulate public opinion.

The fact they did it and how they did it, is beyond doubt and perfectly provable to those who bother to do some objective research. I consider the question of why they did it and who did it, to be one of the more interesting aspects.

On another aspect of your comment Phil, I wonder how many people understand that Facism is the ultimate expression of socialism.

As I understand it the definition of Facism is creating partnerships between business and the state which are then used for political purposes. Take from Germany the IG-Farben/German Govt partnership that saw the company using slave labour for war production. Those poor bastards were guarded by the govt.

The thing is, socialism = collectivism. Collectivism is the antithesis of personal freedom. Why lefties don’t get that, I have no idea. Oh wait, that’s right, I do: they’re fucked in the head.

This whole issue reminds me of a panel discussion I attended in 2005, involving a group of Australian, British and American defence officials. The topic was their countries’ perspectives of current security issues.

The Aussie made a very perceptive comment. He stated that the biggest threat to NZ’s security wasn’t terrorism, or drug trafficking, or religious fundamentalism, or the collapse of governance in the Sth Pacific. Rather, it was the fact that 53% of our population was living on Government welfare. This, he said, would completely paralyse the ability of any NZ Government to respond effectively to a crisis.

Experience as governer of a very small state is not adequate for the Presidency and she fails on management experience for the same reason.

Ability and intellectual horsepower so far not evident although she can deliver speeches and talking points thought up by others quite well.

Popularity esp when you’re talking about American politicial crowds does not have any association with political ability. Look how poorly Ron Paul rates and he’s more capable than anyone in Congress.

As a sometimes reader at this site I cannot understand who most of you are trying to persuade. Very few actually address any problem. It seems to be a counterproductive process to endlessly yell “liars. cheats, stolen election, fascist, ‘ ad nauseum. As probably a left leaning floating voter, there is so little in the rants above that would possibly persuade me. The few who attempt to discuss get drowned out by the screamers. Fair enough. I too cannot find a link to Paul himself actually considering her, so I could be mistaken. riki, I said in February that when Obama and McCain got to around this point in the cycle, that the media would throw some dirt at Obama that would cost him the election.

Look, you may be right, time will tell. I however believe that whatever Palin turns out to be, both her and McCain if elected will prove to be a total disaster worse even than Bush. It’s that bad.

Obama is almost but just fractionally less bad, and he carries the possibility of a JFK-like spirit which would be interesting. I wouldn’t vote for either even if I could.

For the record most people in the UK think Palin to be lightweight, and a potential liability. Only because Alaskans don’t seem

to get out much. An attractive candidate with a lot of bottle. Some admirable qualities. She is however a literal heartbeat away from

incredible power. Most Brits find that really scary.

GM, I think National pushed the wrong line when attacking labour over the trains: What everyone remembers is them attacking labour for “buying a trainset”, when what they really needed to push is them being “ripped off” (or for even more impact “ripped off by Australians”). Much of the public don’t care for ideological discussions as to whether state ownership is good, or even believe it is good for the government to own assets. By alligning themselves more toward the centre, national is obviously trying to solicit these people’s votes. As such they need to direct their attacks toward what the centre to centre-left people will respond to. Stressing state ownership will only serve to attract people who will inevetibly vote act or national anyway and are thus preaching to the converted.

Also with regard to labour being proud of what is in fact a poor situation: remember last election Helen Clark repeatedly mentioned that being “very very very close firends” with the US was something to be proud of, and made use of it in labour adverts. The actual context of the statement was whether NZ was an ally or a friend of the US. As we had our troops fighting with US forces, anything less than ally is insulting (and incidentally not worth of a free trade deal). Interestingly, no major media service ever called Labour out over this. I suspect none will really question the next spin line they spew out either. Their ability to make deductions and agressively question politicians has severely atrophied under the labour government.
