dad4justice: I agree whole heartily with you. However if we want to seriously address child abuse (which I believe most NZ’s do) then we must again look at the issue of abortion in this country. That is the first and most horrid form of child abuse you can get. And before some get all up in arms in regards “woman’s right to choose” just have a look at photos of what happens to a “living child” through the process of abortion.
If we don’t value life from conception (aprox 18000 abortions per year in NZ) then there is no wonder we suffer the degree of abuse amongst our precious younger children.
For once let’s start joining the dots. And yes the Family Party does have such policies as you require. http://www.familyparty.org.nz

That all hangs on the result in Mangere and East Coast Bays Danny-boy, which we don’t have any polling data for yet – watch this space.

But actually, assuming half the voters who vote for us are ex-Labour (a pretty reasonable assumption based on the level of support for the party in South Auckland), your figure is completely incorrect. Your calculation only works if we are only taking votes off National or Act, which is highly unlikely.

Here is Victor Davis Hanson in the day before yesterday’s Washington Times: THIS ADVICE APPLIES EQUALLY TO NZ:

“…….Americans cannot charge all we desire on unlimited credit. Surely one of our presidential candidates can warn the American people to save a little more, use our credit cards a little less and pay off what we already owe.

The government can only hand out more entitlements by borrowing even more to pay for them. Raising taxes on anyone in a recession is insane. But even crazier is cutting them further at a time of skyrocketing national debt without commensurate reductions in spending.

So who will tell the people that we can’t raise – or reduce – taxes and can’t borrow for any more new programs until we first cut expenses and begin paying off the trillions we’ve already borrowed?

In a hugely productive economy that creates each year some $13 trillion of goods and services, the government has the resources to make real headway in paying down our $10 trillion national debt in relatively short order – if we have leaders brave enough to quit promising to spend a few more hundred billion here and there that we simply don’t have.

Will some candidate explain to the wheeler-dealer public that most real estate is not going to double or triple in value every few years? Instead, houses should once again be seen as homes to live in, rather than investments to get rich from.

If 70 percent of the American people scrimp to buy a home, we can’t endanger their financial solvency by waiving the rules for others, who can’t or won’t pay the mortgage debts they freely incurred. It’s time to tell the public that you must budget to buy a house, see it as a place to raise a family and pay the mortgage you took on. And if that’s not possible, then keep renting.

The problems on Wall Street, our energy woes, the election-year fight over taxes versus more programs, and the housing crash have one common denominator: massive debt. They are simply the collective reflections of our own spendthrift habits of buying things with borrowed money that we now either can’t or don’t want to pay back.

In this year’s presidential race, the honest candidate who stops promising endless bailouts and has the guts to lead us out of debt could well end up winning.”

“……Neither candidate is speaking economic truth. There is no clear explanation of how government policies caused this mess. Neither candidate understands that if markets are allowed to adjust prices to reflect actual values, then the economy will return to solid footing faster than if government continues to nationalize businesses, inflate credit, and engage in the hubris of central planning.

Instead, economic nonsense emanates from both camps. McCain, for example, wants government to prop up housing prices even though the housing crisis was caused by policies and practices that resulted in houses reaching prices far beyond the affordability level of many Americans. The market is trying to correct over-inflated housing prices to lower, more rational levels, yet those who would be president want prices to remain at lofty, unsustainable levels. Of course, the reason for this is to try to keep the myriad financial assets based on home mortgages from crashing. But until those malinvestments are liquidated, the scarce capital will be used to prop up essentially bankrupt firms instead of creating new wealth, thereby retarding economic growth.

Speaking of capital, the Federal Reserve is reported to be supplying trillions of dollars of capital to financial institutions. These reports aren’t quite accurate. True capital represents actual savings. When the Fed “injects liquidity” into the financial system, it is creating ersatz capital out of thin air. That “capital” has no economic substance, but it does have the potential to distort economic decisions, just as any other inflationary policy distorts activity by making capital appear to be more abundant than it really is.

Politics is entirely responsible for the present crisis being as extensive as it is. The reason is that no president wants to let market corrections happen on his watch. Thus, instead of letting Long Term Capital Management collapse in 1998, which would have punctured the stock market bubble and triggered demands for prudent limits on the creation of derivative instruments by financial firms, President Bill Clinton and the Fed managed to pull some strings, paper over the problem, and issue easy credit. The result was a bigger stock market bubble and the beginning of the real-estate bubble. Rather than let the market sort things out after 9/11, Bush leaned on the Fed to lower interest rates, and the housing bubble really took off.
Today, because of those earlier political interventions, there are more malinvestments than ever. The liquidation of these massive malinvestments would be so jarring that all of official Washington is striving to postpone the day of reckoning with government controls and more easy credit from the Fed. Sooner or later, though (and it looks like sooner) economic reality will prevail and the necessary adjustments will take place. To the extent that any president can delay that inevitable process, the ultimate adjustments will be that much more painful.”

House prices have never fallen more that 10% previously in one year, except for 1931 when prices collapsed following the abandonment of the gold standard.

I suspect that New Zealand will follow British experience. The British crash is significant because it is occurring without a grinding recession and high unemployment to force sales. Yet the correction is occurring closer to the peak than in the 1990’s, and the fall is steeper. Most models assume a correction greater than the 20% that occurred then, partly because the housing crisis is going to hit the economy very hard. Goldmann’s predict a fall of 35%. Former Monetary Policy Committee member, Professor Goodhart of the LSE predicts a “dire” situation.

The banks will eventually face a flood of bad debt, arrears and repossessions. Some parts of the market are very vulnerable, especially the high loan-to-value mortgages and the buy-to-let market. Some lenders are already in trouble, and have tried to recapitalize. Generally, the market lost confidence when banks offered rights. Both HBOS and Barclays share prices promptly fell below the proposed issue price. Bradford and Bingley also suffered a catastrophic fall in share price and a ratings downgrade. While shares are plunging, worse will follow when people walk away from a house in which their equity has been destroyed by a falling market. Banks will take terrible losses, made worse by gearing…….”

“……..On 23 July, 2008 the finance company model which had served New Zealand well for generations melted. The occasion was Hanover’s freezing of $554 million of funds owned by 16,500 investors. The cause was a universal credit crunch, very harsh New Zealand conditions and the indifference of both the New Zealand government and the Reserve Bank to the crash of 26 finance companies and the misery of thousands and “Mum and Pop” depositors.

The model was that much property development (as well as some hire purchase) was funded by finance companies rather than banks. They attracted funds by offering securities such as debentures to depositors. The yield was higher than bank deposits because the risk was higher. Many investors did not know how high the risk was. The system got property developed. But it depended on a functioning market for property, so developers could repay the finance companies. It depended on depositors rolling over their funds, and not withdrawing too much. It depended on finance companies scrutinizing proposals carefully, and accepting good collateral.

The model broke because the market is now dysfunctional. The Reserve Bank deliberately targeted property, and imposed the highest interest rates in the OECD to deflate prices. This has contributed to a recession. Finance companies cannot now get money back from developers. Nor can they maintain enough liquidity to satisfy investors made nervous by the failure of 26 companies. The model needed steady growth. It needed good managers. Managers have often been bad, and it is admitted that some deserve to fail.

But even if some companies deserve to fail, is it fair that the mum and pop depositors carry the can? Because the Reserve Bank regulates the financial system, could it not have given more warning? Could it not have told people about risk? Its Financial Stability Report ( page 29) is unfeeling:

“However, failures in the sector are unlikely to have widespread negative effects on the financial system or the broader economy, despite some pressure in certain sectors, such as property development.” Note “some pressure” on property development. How insulated from the real world can people get?

It is understood that the Government will stand by the banks. The BNZ has been bailed out a couple of times in living memory…….”

Bean says surging house prices a few years ago did not result in large rises in consumption, and if inflation slowed, “there is no reason to extrapolate that into a sharp deceleration in consumer spending”. Most economists are shocked, and predict that consumer spending will almost grind to a halt. The speed of the current housing downturn indicates to me that it is very severe, and more like the 1930’s than 1990’s.”

“…..But let’s step back a bit from the amazing events of the last few weeks and ask two key questions:
what caused the Credit Crunch and how will it change the way we do things?

The immediate answers are ‘too much debt’, and, ‘we’ll have to learn to live without too much debt.’

Some bracing facts about our level of indebtedness are needed to convince New Zealanders how serious the situation is. Firstly, New Zealand households are much more indebted than those in America blamed for all the sub-prime debt that triggered the credit crunch.

Our household debt to disposable income ratio has risen to 163% from 110% in the last five years. This is well above the 130% seen in the United States. Our household debt servicing cost to disposable income ratio has risen to 14.4% from 9% 10 years ago. Our debt servicing burden rose above America’s for the first time ever this year.

New Zealanders borrowed more than NZ$50 billion extra from foreign banks and investors in the last 30 months. We did it through our banks. The Credit Crunch has now frozen global credit markets, making it difficult for our banks to easily and cheaply roll over that debt every few months. That heavy borrowing was reflected in our high current account deficit and the borrowing needed to service that current account deficit.

For the last five years or so much of that borrowing was used to pay for imports and to invest mostly in each others houses, pushing up house prices. But there has been an ominous change in the last year or so. We have stopped borrowing so much to invest in housing or pay for imports. We are now borrowing to pay the interest on the previous borrowing.

New Zealand’s interest payments and dividend payments to the rest of the world accelerated to a record NZ$4.44 billion in the June quarter. About NZ$2.2 billion of that was interest payments. Our foreign borrowings rose a further NZ$1.6 billion in the June quarter.

This means we borrowed more simply to pay the interest on the previous debt. This is like using a credit card to pay the interest costs on the mortgage, but on a national scale.

The man credited with the discoveries that unleashed the atomic bomb, Albert Einstein, once said this: “The most powerful force in the universe is compound interest.” He was right. Compound interest on unpaid debt will destroy everything in its path.

New Zealand has an atomic bomb of debt which is about to blow up the New Zealand economy for a decade or two. If we are lucky the Reserve Bank and our major banks will be able to manage a controlled explosion that leaves plenty of walking wounded but is not fatal to everyone. The worst case scenario is an almost complete cessation of new lending. The best case is a sharp reduction in new lending growth spread out over two to three years.

This is where the changes of behaviour have to come in. New Zealanders generally, our politicians specifically, and our banking system in particular have to acknowledge a massive change of behaviour is needed.

Put simply, we need to stop borrowing more overseas as a percentage of GDP and actually reduce it. We must do that because if we don’t our creditors will do it for us in a more violent way. That means not borrowing any more overseas for a decade or so. In real terms that means New Zealanders need to stop spending and borrowing around NZ$1.5 billion a month or NZ$375 per person…….”

What I’m sayin’ is that there’s no evidence that the Family Party are gonna make the 5% threshold or win an electorate seat. Ya might say that such votes are “redistributed” amongst the parties that do qualify (hence 0.4 for Greens and Labour), but more accurate ta say that yer vote ain’t counted an’ it’s as if ya never voted. If ya wanna change the government, ya wanna make yer vote count.

You are trying to justify over 18,000 deaths a year by abortion because a tiny proportion of them (a few per year you can count on your fingers) may be killed later by violence.

I think it is much better to give them all a chance at life. Abortion by suction (most common method) involves the baby being torn to pieces alive with no anaesthetic, far worse than what happened to Nia. So although I don’t condone what happened to her at all, I certainly feel over 18,000 babies being torn to pieces is far worse than maybe 10 (ie <0.1%) running the risk of being killed later in their childhood.

What they didn’t say is that they are moving their HO into swanky new premises in the Viaduct Basin and have just completed a complete re fit of the old market buildings after GE moved out. Now they want their customers to pay for the new premises.

MyNameIsJack: You make your choice, both absolutely break my heart. Pain is pain. I don’t know how much difference it makes if it is felt inside or outside of the womb. All I do know is that in both cases it led to the tragic death of young New Zealanders. Their inherent potential died with them and our country is worse off for it.
How much potential has been lost every year by these 18000 abortions? Remember we all once were in our Mothers womb. It should be one of the safest places in the world, yet today it is one of the most dangerous. Thank goodness we survived!
Something has to change if we want this Nation to rise to its full potential as most of us certainly do.
The only freedom this current lot gives us is SEXUAL freedom, everything else they want to control! We certainly need a major shift in thinking to get ahead.

I could never understand the mindset of any individual who thinks it is ok to do this to a baby in the womb, yet scream loudly and publicly about how evil our society is when a baby perhaps just a few months older is abused or killed. Seems very hypocritical to me.

I have been saying for a while, that I actually DON’T want the Nats to get in now, because we need Labour to be incontrovertably blameworthy for EVERYTHING that now happens; not having the convenient scapegoat of a 3-year John Key government that “did the wrong things” in response to “the international crisis of capitalism”.

At the same time, I have been predicting doom all round if Obama wins the US Presidency. I am now starting to think along the same lines as I am for NZ. Let the Democrats win the Presidency, Senate, and Congress. Let them DO their “New Deal”. The glorious train wreck of “big government” will come all the more swiftly.

By old-fashioned restrictions, read Christian morality. Huntford noted that this came together with efforts to downplay or attack Western culture prior to the French Revolution. As Mr. Olof Palme, who was Swedish Socialist Prime Minister from the late 1960s until 1986, said: “The Renaissance So-called? Western culture? What does it mean to us?”

“As political and economic freedom diminishes” said Aldous Huxley’s in Brave New World, “sexual freedom tends compensatingly to increase.” This fits perfectly with Huntford’s description. The state strips away your personal, economic and political freedom, yet grants you sexual freedom in return, boldly hailing itself as your liberator. Sweden in 2008 is a society with no real freedom of speech if you deviate from the ruling ideology. The more crushing ideological censorship and political repression become, the more frantic the displays of “sexual freedom” get. Sex is freedom; freedom means sex, and only sex.

State authorities present this as liberation of women and sexual liberation, but it is actually about breaking down rival sources of power: The traditional Christian culture and the nuclear family. Actually Toad, with regards to Lockwood Smith’s comments, the toilets that one finds in other parts of the world are quite different to here. There have been instances of New Immigrants who are used to using squatting type of toilets seen elsewhere in the world having great difficulty in mastering the foibles of the modern flush commode.

I have read accounts of new immigrants perched on flush toilets in the manner more often seen on the squat pans more often seen in asia and other parts of the world. Employees of these new immigrants would have to take steps to make sure that these employees are comfortable doing something that is quite natural to us but very weird to them.

I can tell you from experience that it is just as bad for the likes of you and I going to a squat loo for the first time. There is a bit of a knack to it!

There are some divisions that are necessarily made based on race. Our DNA doesn’t care about ideology.

Are you disputing that Asians often have smaller hands than some other ethnic groups?
Are you disputing that smaller hands could be a desirable attribute for some jobs?
Are you disputing whether or not some employers have been having to teach workers how to use a toilet or shower?
Do you think this should be an employer’s responsibility?

Where do you think Lockwood Smith got this from, if not directly from employers.

The only slim point you have is that perhaps Lockwood Smith was implying that because someone may be asian, they may be better suited to certain work because of having smaller hands. This is true. they MAY, if they do indeed have small hands. You wouldn’t hire anyone (asian or otherwise) with enormous hands if you wanted them to do a job that required small hands would you?

Having a problem with that is like having a problem with a tiger having stripes being better able to hide in long grass than an elephant.

Some drugs cannot be given to people of middle eastern descent (because it will harm them). Is that “racist”?

Men can’t give birth to babies. Is that “sexist”?

I can’t swim as fast as Michael Phelps (do I care? No). If someone reminds me of that are they “elitist”? Should we make Michael Phelps swim slower so everyone else can get over themselves?

Bloody egalitarians should be lined up…. we are all different as we should be.. we need to get over it. Focus on the positive – what you can do, not what you can’t.

PhilBest: No I hadn’t read that, it certainly makes scary reading considering we are watching exactly this happening in New Zealand right before our eyes.
If I had to face financial loss or the loss of my family, I would choose financial loss any day.
I believe a shift is happening in New Zealand and I trust all the hard work the Family Party has done on the ground in Mangere pays off for them.
If they win a seat (and personally I believe they will) and even get 2% of the vote they will get about four MP’s in parliament and a pro family party must be good for our country.

Re the “small hands”, it is not only true, it is smart. e.g For centuries the Italians have been using women and children to pick olives as strong men ruin the crop. It is just smart. Following your doctrine, it is ok to use the woman and children, but not to say publicly that you do. That is stupid.

You seem to confuse honesty and reality for racism and bigotry. Again, that is stupid.

Perhaps if you climbed down of that high horse, you might have a better perception of reality.

There was little real debate about immigration in the heavily left-leaning media that year, but an all the more passionate witch-hunt looking for racists, and by that I mean whites only. The left-wing coalition government, after a meeting with immigrant organizations, announced that racists, apparently meaning white natives only, should be “smoked out” of all public sector jobs.

The same government in October 2008 funded a conference in Oslo involving “dialogue” with a number of hardline sharia-sponsoring groups from the Middle East, including the Egyptian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood. The section Fred og Forsoning (“Peace and Reconciliation”) of the Foreign Ministry financed the research project “Fault Lines of Islamism” [pdf] led by Bjørn Olav Utvik of the University of Oslo. Gry Larsen from the Labor Party, representing the Ministry, was scheduled to meet with representatives of these groups. The left-wing government can thus meet with radical Islamic groups, but want to silence those among the natives who don’t want Muslims with such views to settle in their country. No “dialogue” with them.

Two ambulance drivers in Oslo, both of them white native Norwegians, were in August 2007 involved in what became a massively hyped case supposedly involving “white racism.” The ambulance had arrived to pick up an African man who was injured. As ambulance driver Erik Schjenken months later explained, the man “pulled down his pants and urinated on my colleague’s leg. My colleague was surprised, pulled away and called him a pig. That’s when we viewed the man as a problem, and decided it was best if the police took him to the clinic.” Ali Farah, the Somalian man in question, had more severe head injuries than the drivers assumed at that point. “We made a mistake, because we interpreted his urination as willful and a provocation, but NOT because we had racist or discriminatory motives,” Schjenken wrote.

Based on weak suspicions of “racism,” the mass media, leading intellectuals and politicians launched what can only be described as a witch-hunt against the two ambulance drivers. “This would never happen to a white man,” said the prominent Norwegian-Pakistani lawyer Abid Q. Raja, representing Farah and his family. Author Anne Holt, who once served as Minister of Justice for the Labor Party, wrote an essay in newspaper Aftenposten which in my view amounted to a verbal execution of the drivers. Both of them were suspended from service and became the target of widespread, negative media coverage. They were later cleared after an investigation of the incident by the Norwegian Board of Health Supervision. However, the Equality and Anti-Discrimination Ombud, or the Multicultural Inquisition as I like to call it, ruled that Farah was a victim of discrimination and that the ambulance personnel broke the anti-discrimination laws. As noted before, the anti-discrimination law states that natives are guilty of “discrimination” almost as soon as they are suspected of it.

It should be mentioned here that this African man was injured in the first place because he was beaten by another African man, from Ghana. In Norway, a country straddling the Arctic Circle and with no colonial history, one African man beats another African man, and the result is that the white ambulance drivers, who have dedicated their lives to helping other people, become the targets of a lynch mob led by the country’s media. Driver Erik Schjenken needed professional help as he was brought to the brink of suicide.

According to Hans Rustad from the major blog Document.no, the ideology of anti-racism in some cases resembles what we have seen from Communists regimes. The term “racist” is similar to being called a “class traitor” under Communism. The mere accusation is powerful enough to destroy lives. Rustad fears that anti-racism in some cases leads to lawlessness. Ambulance driver Schjenken was a well-regarded employee who had performed thousands of calls and saved many lives, yet because of one error of judgment, which in my view was understandable given the situation, his life was ruined. All because he had a politically incorrect skin color while the other person was non-white……”

Abortion is either bad or not. The family party are not advocating the removal of it – how is that any different from other parties? Why should the family party (formed from a fundamentalist religious group whom I do not agree on on most points) be the ones to decide which abortions are moral and which are not? Is Richard Lewis somehow gifted with the ability to make this determination? Abortion is absolutely not a policy issue that puts the family party ahead of other parties for those who don’t support abortion.

Remember, the Family Party are pro-abortion – they do not want to see it made illegal – they just want to tell women of their choice that they are, or are not allowed one.

PhilBest & GJ, great points about true freedom vs sexual freedom, I had never seen it quite that clearly before.

Toad, there is nothing wrong with Lockwood Smith’s comments. At Lincoln University the problem with asian students crouching on toilets and breaking toilet seats in the process became so bad that they had to put little signs with a person crouching on a toilet with a line through it (like a no smoking sign) in all the cubicles! Granted they only lasted 2 days before they had all been stolen to decorate student flats, but it showed that this is a real problem for some immigrants…

Let’s be straight here. If you are the child IT IS BAD! in fact terminal.

From my reading and understanding of The Family Party they are 100% pro life.

However their policy comes from the viewpoint of lets get the existing law working properly and let those contemplating an abortion see all of the facts and evidence before making a decision. They certainly are not shown that currently.

People will always be free to make their own decisions, but let them do so with the facts.

If this was done our current abortion rate would halve and people would still be exercising there freedom of choice. Sounds pretty sensible to me!

However we are being very realistic about what we will actually be able to achieve as a minor party, and therefore this is not the only policy we are proposing. We also have policies that are smaller and would be more easy to obtain the support of over 50% of the house for and therefore get implemented, while saving many lives. These include requiring parental consent for teen abortions, providing alternatives to abortion (adoption, support services to keep the child), requiring education before having an abortion including seeing a scan of the baby, promoting abstinence before and alongside (not instead of) contraception in sex ed etc. Each of these would make a dent in abortion rates, and together they should cause a significant reduction.

Your statement that we are pro-abortion is therefore completely false.

The Govt/DOC has just purchased St James station in Canterbury.

They paid 40 million of our money for a farm that has only around 900 cattle , 1000 sheep and a few horses.

St James is mostly PASTORAL LEASE, so this means they paid 40m for land we already own! they also said the current tenants can continue to live there as long as they like, this effectively means they paid 40 million so that the former tenants would remove all their stock while retaining there home. (talk about winning lotto)
This is crazy when the books are in the state they are in!!

DPF saw the blog mobile outside RNZ House on the Terrace just before lunch. Man that truck is huge!
Figured it must have been you driving(nice parking) as the last time I saw it (Tinakori Rd)
the driver had the pedal to the metal and was swinging hard to right!!!
Perhaps the blog mobile was then piloted by Mr Oil?

Mr Dennis: I should point out that I am anti-abortion and religious – so this is not an atheistic attack on you and your party.

You said: “Your statement that we are pro-abortion is therefore completely false.”

Your policy says:

“Our goal: The Family Party aims to significantly decrease the number of abortions in New Zealand.”

“Require parental knowledge and consent for child/teen abortion procedures (Amendment to the Care of Children Act)”

Those two statements are not anti-abortion – they are pro-reduction in numbers of abortions. It still leaves the so-called “right” to murder your baby intact.

If you really are anti-abortion, you should campaign on abolition not reduction.

Finally, I agree with your policy points on abstinence education and legal status for the unborn child. I do not support your policy on contraception. Saying “don’t have sex, but if you do use this” is tacit approval of sex and does not help the problem.

I gathered you too were anti-abortion, I did not see your post as atheistic in the slightest. On abortion, our constitution states:
“9. SANCTITY OF LIFE
Protect and uphold the sanctity of life for all New Zealanders, extending to the unborn child.”
Our goal to “significantly decrease” abortion numbers is an acceptance of the political reality and a realistic goal, not an endorsement of abortion.

Likewise our intention to introduce abstinence education before, then alongside, the current contraception education is not an endorsement of contraception for teens, but rather a practical policy we can actually implement that will hopefully reduce the number of teens having sex. We take no position on whether contraception is right or wrong as this is an issue that Christians are divided on (the Catholic church being against all contraception while many Protestants accept some methods as ok within marriage). I too believe that the current education program encourages sex, I went through it not that many years ago myself, and it certainly needs major change.

National get Tauranga Boys’ tick

Tauranga Boys’ College, known for correctly picking election results, is tipping a big win for the National Party.

The results of a student vote just out, tip a landslide win for National. The party vote was 71 percent for National with Labour a distant second on 16 percent.

The vote on the Tauranga electorate was much closer, with 48 percent picking National’s Simon Bridges. New Zealand First leader Winston Peters is trailing just six percent behind on 42 percent.

The students of Tauranga Boys’ College have an uncanny record – they have predicted the result of all but two elections over the past three decades.

An old chestnut i know but one still worth commenting on.Pot is not the recreational drug that it used to be.The THC content has increased to the point that it is a far more dangerous and an addictive drug than those who grew up in 60’s and 70’s and probably the 80’s knew.So what you say,my point is that out there are people that are quite willing to give you a sample bag of P while buying what most people deem harmless.

I found Maori to be slightly useful in Papua New Guinea. At least it convinces the locals I’m not Australian 🙂
Some local words are similar- in pidgin ‘to eat’ is kai kai, which is fairly easy to remember when food in Maori is just ‘kai’. OTOH, Maori doesn’t help with crocodile (puk puk).

I’d still rate Mandarin, Spanish and Arabic as more useful languages to acquire.

3 news had a story on Lockwood Smith’s comment but took the unusual step of getting background from the vineyard owners who had these migrant workers employed. They seemed to support what Lockwood was saying. Rather balanced from what we have seen from tv3 of late I thought.

The other story was the continuing fallout from Owen Glenn and his discussion with Helen Clark over the lack of business experience within Labour. Helen Clark seemed to agree with that assessment, and did so proudly, while sneering about alcohol consumption, but not in her glass of course!

Key also agreed with that assessment of the Labour caucus.

The Republican National Committee appears to have spent more than $150,000 to clothe and accessorize vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin and her family since her surprise pick by John McCain in late August.

According to financial disclosure records, the accessorizing began in early September and included bills from Saks Fifth Avenue in St. Louis and New York for a combined $49,425.74.

The records also document a couple of big-time shopping trips to Neiman Marcus in Minneapolis, including one $75,062.63 spree in early September. The RNC also spent $4,716.49 on hair and makeup through September after reporting no such costs in August.

$5 grand for hair styling and make-up? As Americans face a depression?

Let them eat cake indeed.

Some weeks ago someone – Stephen I believe – asked why so many people down under have so much invested in an election and politicians that they cannot even influence via a vote.

While I won’t answer that on this thread if Lloydis and Cha are going to continue to post the usual brain-dead stereotype reinforcements I guess I may as well respond with stereotype breakers like the following:

The “people’s ticket” ordered a little snack from room service at the Waldorf, as the N.Y. Post’s page Six reports:

While he was at a meeting at the Waldorf-Astoria at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Michelle Obama called room service and ordered lobster hors d’oeuvres, two whole steamed lobsters, Iranian caviar and champagne, a tipster told Page Six.

I’d guess the bill for that snack came in at around $350. Iranian caviar ain’t cheap — even if you negotiate for it yourself. What the hell . . . Your campaign contributions (soon to be your tax dollars) at work.

Does anyone else remember Gerald Ford toasting his own English Muffins in the family quarters of the White House? Michelle’s style is a little more Leona Helmsley, who’s ad campaign featured a picture of herself in one of her hotels, with the slogan, “a hotel fit for a Queen.” Can you do that at the White House?

The party of the poor and oppressed indeed.
