Everybody is getting very excited about corruption in our Government – “cash for policy” – but I have not seen anybody highlighting that it’s the complex laws and regulations over industries like fishing that are the primary cause of these shenanigans. Less Government control over our lives would mean less opportunities for corruption.

Take the story of how Fleur of Fleurs Place restaurant at Moeraki could not get fish off the fishing boats landing their catch at her door at any price until she paid through the nose for her own quota and arranged her own supply of fish. A minor example, perhaps, but indicative of how distorted the fishing business has become, with regulations trumping the market.

Makes you want to vote ACT.

From the Greens agricultural policy….”and educate overseas cosumers to move the debate to ecological footprints”,havn’t these pricks done enough damage.The last thing this country needs is a focus on Food Miles.

I can’t help but feel that all this muck raking is having an effect also. A quick review of the character polls that have been running on the Herald site:

Poll:
Teach your children: Key 53% – Clark 12%
Should Helen work with Peters: Yes 24% – NO 76%
Who would help an old lady across the road: Key 34% – Clark 12%
Stranded on a desert island with: Key 40% – Clark 15%
Most likely to change a nappy: Key 36% – Clark 6%
Most likely to shout at home: Key 10% – Clark 42%
Most likely to call noise control on you: Key 8% – Clark 36%

Yes, I know they aren’t scientific and there could be a number of reasons for such a slant, but if they are even a rough reflection of people’s feelings then Labour could really be in for a bloodbath on Saturday.

Especially when you take into account the Tauranga Boys High vote (so prominantly talked up by the media- until the result came out) of a 70+% to about 16% in favour of National.

I don’t know how this squares with the preffered Prime Minister stakes at present as it seems a real anomoly to that poll. Maybe these polls are a reflection of peoples feelings about Clark but that doesn’t impact on how they perceive she can the job, which is reflected in the more scientific polls?

Maybe Labour supporters either don’t read the Herald online or don’t participate in these polls but that would seem too weird an explanation.

Perhaps the anonymity of the Herald polls is a factor and they are quite accurate?

The only real conclusion that can be drawn is that the vaste majority of Herald poll takers do not like Helen Clark as a person.

I know I biased because I am a strong Nat. I hear anger all around about Aunty Helen, I hear rude stories about her and yet she seems to fly in a stratosphere that has no reality. Labor always to reserve its vitriol for conservatives. Conservatives are more polite,except for blog nutters – why can’t the media realize that Helen Clark is Labor’s greatest strength but more so is their greatest weakness.
Her false modesty, artificial smile but biting nasty words will come home to roost next Saturday.
How will she reply to having to make a concession ? A fair bit of sour grapes, blaming the National Party etc of dirty tricks

Prior to then the polling companies seemed to be doing a weekly poll each, but there were none at all this weekend.

I know Stuff polls aren’t scientific… but check out the number of folks who don’t plan to vote – 33% !.

These polls have been sabotaged before – mostly by 9th floor staffers or bots, but I struggle to see who would stand to gain from sabotaging this one.

I was listening to Soper this morning discussing poll results. He mentioned the proportion of the population that no longer have landlines and are therefore not included in the polls.

Is there any reason to suggest that these people would poll differently to the rest of the population? There seems to be an implication that only left leaning or labour supporters would not have landlines. Is there any proof of this?

i think so. ya see landlines are very expensive.. mobiles are much cheaper for everyday calls hahaha

Dime has umm dated (probably not the right word) quite a few young ladies (also not the right word) who are on the DPB. none of them could live without their landlines.. i suspect most are labour voters.. although ive managed to educate many!

I have recently come to the realisation that not only is labour hamstrung by its own ideology, coupled with a lack of pragmatism, but that it also hampered by the fact that what is does within that ideology, it does poorly.

We have had the anti-smacking bill, but children are still killed by caregivers.

We have had the microchipping of dogs, but dog attacks still happen.

We have had 9 years of government by the workers party, yet pay and conditions do not improve relative to our closest neighbour, who have had conservative government for that period.

We have the RMA, yet we are the 6th worst offender in terms of a global footprint.

Health spending is higher than ever, but outcomes do not improve.

Education is a basket case

Labour are incompetent, and survive on spin. The law they pass is bad law and self serving bad law at that.

an Obama victory will see a peak for american socialism. he will be a one termer. all the middle class white college graduates that were brainwashed in college will wake up real fast. i dont think they realise how much money an Obama presidency will cost them.

he wants to redistribute wealth.. hell i just saw a clip of him talking about “price signals to change behaviour”.. in other words tax cool things people with money buy.

the Labour made a press release about a free tax agreement with the US.. any hope of that goes with an Obama victory.

Dime, so Alaska getting a $1.85 from Washington for every $1 they pay in tax is not socialism ?
And that extra money comes from in the main, liberal states.
If socialism is so bad, why do so many of the McCain voting states take money from liberal states via Washington, far above what they pay in tax ?
Why the corporate welfare for Texas farmers in the way of farming subsidies ?
Would you agree that Obama should make sure that states only get what they have paid in ?
And any extra is socialism which should be stopped ?

Well I’m tired of everyone else banning things I like or enjoy, so you can add to my ban list: Greenies, commies, criminals and every other fucker that needs a kick in the genitals!

BTW, as mentioned before, I AM part Maori, but the ‘white’ part dominates, thank God. Over the last 30 years in business I’ve been ripped off more times by Maori I’ve trusted, than any other race. Hands are always out but worse than that the majority just believe that they ‘own’ everything around them, so have no conscience about helping themselves to what doesn’t belong to them, as well taking backhanders as a normal part of doing business. Prime example is Winnie.

People, if Labour get back in and the MP get their way with the seat entrenchment, you’ll be heading the same way as many European countries, where ethnic groups want to have their own laws, courts etc (Sharia law, Maori Sovereignty).

I know I come as across as racist and a bigot, but it’s due to the continual erosion of our rights, useless laws, giving away of this country, and the creeping socialism, that like Redbaiter and others, I’m making a stand to have my say.

“President-to-be” Obama is a media hoax like Global Warming and “Bush Lied”. The media are EVIL, EVIL, EVIL and not a word they say can be trusted. The New York Times is on the skids financially, and their propaganda performance over the Obamessiah will be the last nail in their coffin, they won’t last long after Obama’s “shock” loss. 2004 was the year in which the “Mainstream” media in the USA lost the ability to run the political agenda, thanks a lot to “new media” and the “Fox News phenomenon”. (Remember the “Kerry has it sewn up” line that was ongoing right through to the end of election day itself? And by the way, the Bush supporters on the East Coast who were deceived into staying home late on election day 2004 aren’t going to fall for that this time). 2008 is the year of the richly deserved demise of the New York Times and other “MSM”, the total loss of any credibility whatsoever, even in the eyes of their socialist fellow-travellers. “So what if The One should actually lose next week? The brainwashed hysteria whipped up on his behalf is, to put it mildly, dangerous. The media proclaims daily that Obama has already won. He cannot lose. He is the Saviour of the Planet. McCain is a mumbling senile idiot. Palin is evil incarnate. The polls show an Obama landslide. So if the world should revolve backwards on its axis next Tuesday and people wake up and find he has lost, then either the election will have been stolen in the way we all know evil Republicans always steal elections – or the American public will be proved to be, as we all know they are, irredeemably racist. Accordingly, we are warned that there would then be riots on the streets.

Those who see a racist in every non-Obama voter are themselves the people for whom Obama’s race is his defining characteristic. They say in terms that his race is the reason we must vote for him. They are the people who, by smearing every conceivable criticism of Obama or revelation of his unsavoury associations as ‘racist’, have emptied the term of its meaning. They are the people who, posing as ‘progressive’, display daily their utter contempt for their fellow human beings who are apparently incapable of voting against Obama on the rational grounds of the disturbing information they have learned about him, because by definition such information is just a load of racist smears. It cannot be true because there cannot be any dissent.

The same media which is whipping up this hysteria has failed to tell people that some polls are telling a different story – that the gap between the candidates is closing. The same media have either failed to tell the American public about Obama’s deeply questionable record, influences, sayings or associations, or the fact that it is the Obama campaign which has tried to steal the vote by delivering more than a million fraudulent voter registrations, or its systematic lies about all of the above, the equivalent of any one of which affronts would have instantly sunk a Republican candidate — or else have trivialised and dismissed them.

Insofar as the American public has managed to obtain some of this suppressed information, it has been delivered by the Western Resistance comprising internet journalists, Fox News and talk radio. The British press, however, have taken their cue entirely from the fifth-columnist liberal US media. So the Telegraph’s Andrew Gimson reported yesterday his deep distaste, upon arriving in America for the election, to encounter on Fox News a

sustained exercise in character assassination, in which Barack Obama was subjected to volley after volley of slurs and innuendo. Viewers were assured that Mr Obama was associated with an ‘unrepentant terrorist’, was helped by ‘a convicted Chicago slum landlord’, was connected with someone else who made ‘grossly inappropriate videos targeted at your children’, and was even acquainted with a Communist poet who ‘advocated for black soldiers to take up arms against the United States’.

Tsk! Just fancy!! ‘…even acquainted with a Communist poet’ ? Presumably this is a reference to Frank Marshall Davis, the Communist Party anti-American agitator and black power racist — with an FBI file an inch think — who was Obama’s most important mentor for most of his younger life, and whose unshaken influence on Obama’s thinking is plain from everything he has done and the associations he has formed. To call this merely ‘an acquaintance’ is just risible.

In similar vein, Obama’s relationship with the ‘unrepentant’ former Weather Underground terrorist William Ayers is dismissed as of no consequence on the basis that this was a chance association. But the real issue is that Ayers stopped being a terrorist because he realised that he could more effectively undermine America through radicalising the young through education. As this article reiterates, Obama and Ayers — at a fund-raiser in whose front room Obama’s political career was launched — between them systematically funded radical school projects to indoctrinate American children in sedition. This is all part of a pattern. Daniel Pipes has further essential facts on Obama’s links with corrupt sources in a web that extends all the way back to Saddam Hussein. Join up the dots.

But what is frightening is the way so many people are suspending their rational faculties so that they shut their minds to all this on the basis that it is all just ‘smears’ — and instead fire an unparalleled barrage of smears at the other side. Thus Christopher Hitchens launched a vitriolic attack on Sarah Palin on the grounds that she had demonstrated her deranged and medieval hostility to science by ‘denouncing wasteful expenditure on fruit fly research’ which she said she would rather spend on children with special needs. This was particularly unfortunate since the fruit fly was

useful in studying disease, and since Gov. Palin was in Pittsburgh to talk about her signature ‘issue’ of disability and special needs, she might even have had some researcher tell her that there is a Drosophila-based center for research into autism at the University of North Carolina.

This has prompted an incredulous and horrified David Horowitz to rebuke his friend Hitchens thus:

… she wasn’t campaigning against fruit fly research. She was campaigning against earmarks – the $18-billion-a- year scam under which forces taxpayers to underwrite personal favors that congressmen perform for their ‘constituents,’ like giant agribusiness corporations. Such earmarks are transparent bribes since they are bound to encourage constituents who receive them to fund congressional campaigns. The fruit fly earmark was the project of a California congressman named Mike Thompson; the service provided was to the California agribusiness community, which was looking for taxpayer help with a fruit fly problem that threatened their designs to turn olive trees into a profit. The earmark was not about autistic kids. It was about a corrupt patronage system used to benefit one congressman and the olive oil industry’.

Ah, but what’s a little thing like ending corruption, to say nothing of behaving rationally, when we are all just about to be Saved?”

I wouldn’t be surprised at a figure of 33% not intending to vote. I suspect there are a substantial number of Labour supporters who have had enough of Clark’s government but can’t bring themselves to vote for National (and are too centrist to want the Greens). It seems that there may be a lower turnout on polling day and that National will surprise on the upside, due to the fact that National supporters are certain to make sure they get out and vote.

Heard on Newstalk early this afternoon a caller state he was going to vote for Winston as he felt the poodle was the victim of a media beat up regarding the use of Helicopters. What a moron!!

Alse heard a few callers ring up and complain that John Key was unsuitable to be PM because he used to work as a money trader. Appeared to be working to a script.

There should be an IQ test to vote, seriously! You don’t have to be a member of MENSA or anything, but a modicum of simple common sense would be nice.

Great to see an Endorsement for John Key from Inga Tuigamala and Michael Jones in South Auckland. Two very successful men who recognise a kindred spirit.

NeillR- that’s my assessment too. It’s much easier to offer an opinion to a telephone pollster when one is rather disinclined to vote for the untrusted incumbent, or for the untested alternative.

Incidentally the undecided ratio is now back to ~15%.

Winston’s response to the revelation that he did in fact have access to a helicopter (The Herald: see below) raises serious issues as to his state of mind or his perception of the state of mind of the average voter. Of course, he did not use a helicopter for campaigning. How can you talk to people out of a helicopter? He used it for travel! Will this prompt the addition of new terms to our folklore of medical conditions. Instead of “a sandwich short of a picnic” we may end up with “a few bucks short of a donation”, “a few dollars short of a bribe” or “a few scampi short of a bag”. We are almost getting to the stage where his entertainment value is starting to justify his salary!

NZ First leader Winston Peters confirmed today that NZ First has used helicopters during the two election campaigns – but said it was for “travel” not for “campaigning”.
His admission came after photographic evidence appeared to contradict Mr Peters’ earlier flatly denied using a helicopter to campaign, calling the suggestion “stupid”.
A video has also now emerged, which can be viewed by clicking on the link to the right.
Mr Peters said the way the question was framed on Agenda yesterday implied that he had used a helicopter to campaign from, “which of course was ridiculous because of the physical impossibility of speaking to crowds in a noisy gale”.

Just read Colin Espiner’s blog over at Stuff. I sometimes disagree with his analysis but this comment is interesting:

Now, I’m not arguing for a minute that National is going to win the party vote in South Auckland. Of course it’s not. I’ve spent enough time with Clark in these suburbs over the past four weeks to know she’s still revered here.

But Key’s decision to spend two of the final five days of the campaign here tells you two things: One, he’s confident enough about National’s overall share of the vote that he’s prepared to spend time in enemy territory, and two, National reckons Labour is not as strong here as it traditionally was.

Astute comment by Espiner because if National thought they were behind in the polls they would be unlikely to show up in South Auckland. Obviously having Inga and Jones on side could winkle out some more votes for National.

TV3’s Linda Clark, Jon Johanssen and Jenny McManus all picked Key as the next PM. Linda Clark went further and said “it will be ‘cleaner than we think”

Pretty telling huh?

The best thing to do is have zero expectations and then settle down with a drink.

Comfy?? Now, look at Campbell; hear the serious, sonorous, and indescribably tedious and pompous tone. Then just think those puppets in Thunderbirds. Have you not noticed the strings attached to his little wooden arms as they wave about in his feeble little attempt to convey an impression that anything he has to say is either relevant or worth listening to? The Walter Concrete of NZ journalism. Savour the utterly vacuous witterings.

Now, we have the panel of EXPERTS. We need the EXPERTS because we’re incapable of forming an opinion by ourselves. Listen to the criticisms (of both JK and The Leader in fact). Listen to THEIR solutions. Pardon, what was that? I didn’t quite hear. Oh, woops they didn’t have any answers but that qualifies these deadbeats and hack reporters to actually have an opinion. Pity them in their tragic little lives. Because they will only ever write about what other people do.

Take heart WebWrat. No one is going to take the least bit of notice of this little charade. As that equally vacuous little girl student said when interviewed outside The Leader’s Wellington digs “I think I’ll vote Labour because of their position on Student Loans”.
