A mayor of a local authority is in a contracting relationship with his own authority, he has audit office approval under s 3(3)(a) and s 3(3)(aa) of the Local Authorities (Members’ Interests) Act 1968. The approvals allow the mayor to remain on the local authority, however the local authority is refusing to disclose the yearly amount of money which is part of the approvals.

Should a mayor have to disclose the amount of ratepayer money he receives?

As a Clutha-Southland voter and National supporter can I stick up for Bill English.
Bill English has one of the largest electorates in the country, from Queenstown to Lake Waihola. Tuatapere to Tapanui. One thing you can say about Bill is the fact that he looks after his electorate with frequent visits. He also brings home the “pork” when necessary- the health facilities in Gore and Balclutha are testament to that.
He is a good politician, with real clout, and good political antennae.
His current residential problems should never have happened. Bill and his wife are both on the Clutha-Southland roll. For the life of me I don’t think they should be as they spend at the most about one month a year in the residence.
Bill has great support from his electorate, talk of people souring to him is just nonsense.
So many of his blog critics are superficial persons with no idea of the feelings of a constituency which regards party performance as being far more important than flashy charisma.

But it can’t even sufficiently fund investigations into kids being beaten up???? Some from as far as 11 years ago???

Slightly related – I noticed an advert for shaving products in the weekend that suggested men should use multiple products when shaving, 1. Pre-shave gunk, 2. Shaving cream/foam, and 3. Post shave gunk. I suppose the multiple blade thing was getting a bit hard to push. Maybe those who breakfast at McDonalds will have time for their morning applications.

Ok David. The Greens are not in a state of ‘disaster’. There is no election tomorrow. If you think we should throw our hands in the air in surrender because of a dip in the polls now, then you are wrong. My point was not, as you pretended, that Act seats would be threatened by a sub-5.0 poll, but that their support throughout the country, numbers-wise, is lower than the Greens and that it would be embarrasing indeed for the Greens to fall to that level.
How’s that for clarity and sticking to the issue?

On razor blades, I went through the same thing a few years ago about how often you should replace your blade. Google results turned up some people who use a new blade for every shave, which I thought was excessive.
Clearly another advantage in running your own blog, that you can run a poll to see what the ‘norm’ is.
One thing I found when I searched, the size of the razor industry is enormous. Gilette are reported to have spend $750 million bringing the Mach3 to market (I think it was $250million on development and another $500million on marketing, and I think that is $US). The model of giving away the handle to lock customers into buying the blades can be seen repeated in a number of other products too, most notable being inkjet printers.

Well for a start Cerium I would suggest that burying our heads in the sand, and pretending that throwing billions more dollars, and adding masses of more bearacracy, at the problem, (and pretending that changing a law, banning smacking while doing nothing to stop real abuse) is the way to solve it. I use the throw away razors. Gillette is the best, and feels great on the face, but is most expensive and only lasts for a couple of shaves. I am interested in which is the best overall throwaway. I’ve been trying to find out for years.

It isn’t a problem that is capable of solution. It is a problem that is capable of being improved. A lot of people are attempting to do that. As you say Nick a lot of money is being spent on it, I am sure it isn’t all wasted. Could it be spent better? Probably, but how?

If ordinary people did more about it, by supporting parents and families more, by standing up and speaking out when it is necessary to draw attention to specific problems, that could help, and it could mean the government has to do less and spend less trying to fix our fuckups.

I read your comments along with most others here, and I find myself asking, what does redbaiter actually believe in?

If no other political party here in NZ is good enough, and this seems to range from the greens to the Libs and every other party or group or gathering that has popped it’s head up, I wonder what it is, or which party you deem “good enough” to vote for.

Yes, governments and corruption and cronyism have all grown far too much but it is becoming very difficult if not impossible to make incremental changes for the better let alone a massive overhaul. Rapid major change has not been very successful over the last century if you look at Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot and a bunch of others who have tried.

Thanks Red, at least I have a better picture of where you come from.

As for if I am with or against you and your hearties, I am open minded about the possible scenarios around small or non existant Govt.

A problem I see is that with small or non existant Govt, something a lot worse could fill the power void, pete george struck it with parallels around Hitler Pol Pot Mao etc etc.

Major rapid change usually seems to be in conjunction with major force and power and abuse. And everything has unintended consequences.

Try and envisage the RB scenario – people power overthrows the government and does away with most of it, and sacks the MSM news delivery. Do you think everyone will immediately convert to fair, balanced, law abiding full employment capitalism, and communicate sweetly on blogs, and the only problem will be deciding what to do with the empty prisons?
