  I am a monarchist, my preferred form of government is a Constitutional Monarchy.
  Although I know it is more ceremonial than anything else I like having a head of state that is politically neutral rather than the alternatives.
  
  You know if we went to being a republic, that interfering old busybodying NIMBY Helen Clark would be taking a tilt at being the first President of New Venezuela.

    Well there’s always two sides to the equation .
    
    One could just as easily make the claim that New Zealand must remain a constitutional monarchy with equality before the law for all and do away with the T o W altogether .

        No , the monarch’s ( Crown’s) “heirs and successors” are constitutionally the folk who take up the mantle.
        
        Unless one gets a radical govt that wants to tear up all previous deals .
        
        That won’t happen in NZ .
        
        And depending on what the govt of the day , expressed through parliament wants , then that’s what we’ll get.

        Hardly worth replying. However, it is worth pointing out that the New Zealand government, whether a republic or not, is fully bound by all prior treaties and agreements that are in force.
        
        Self evidently that includes the Treaty of Waitangi. Though I am certain you actually already know that.
        
        In any event can you imagine that any of the parties in Parliament, including Act, would repudiate the Treaty?

  I was actually more miffed at the now “normalised” use of “Aotearoa” rather than concerned, this time, about “republic”. – I understood the English saying,”Have you stopped beating …” was more akin to Jacinda’s “I absolutely reject the premise of your question …”

There are concerns at a potentially low turnout for local elections and a call for a return to a formal election day with polling booths as for general elections. However this overlooks the issue that there were low turnouts for local body elections in earlier days when there was a multiplicity of polling booths, hence the introduction of postal voting. When postal voting was introduced there were plenty of mail boxes for the return of ballots and votes posted Friday afternoon were able to be delivered by when voting closed Saturday.
NZ Post says it is providing a ‘bespoke’ service to ensure that ballots posed by the postal deadline will be delivered on time. However the big problem now is postal boxes are as scarce as hen’s teeth. For example a letter to DomPost pointed out that there was one only operational postal box in Newtown and this is at Wellington Hospital and is only accessible when the main doors are open. There was a second one at New World but this is currently inaccessible because of building alterations. The writer complained that more upmarket suburbs still had postal boxes but was unaware that some upmarket suburbs have nil mailboxes.
The union representing postal workers suggested several years ago that posties could clear postal boxes as part of their delivery rounds but NZ Post rejected that for arcane reasons. This is a typical case of a good suggestion being rejected out of hand for no good reason. In the old days posties did clear boxes and as far as I know this is the case in other countries such as USA.
If NZ Post wants to try and salvage some mail volumes, then it should ensure customers can conveniently post letters. Similarly if the postal service is an essential part of the election process then the Government should direct NZ Post to provide a reasonable number of postal boxes. Having posties clear local boxes would lower the ‘barrier’ to provision of postal boxes.

    Boxes could be cleared near ends of run and timing would be unimportant – box times could be posted as Tue, Thur, Fri at 9.30am. That would be better than no box. I remember years ago that a British local postie cleared a box at the end of his run.

    In the US apparently there are all kinds of propositions on the ballot, for example we could put up a proposition that no more cycle lanes are to be put in place until a minimum average of at least two cyclists per day we’re using the present ones.
    What we have now is not an opportunity to participate in democracy, but to change the faces on council websites while the staff implement agenda 2030 as directed by central government.

On the Hosk this morning, some alcohol advocate takes about the evils of alcohol advertising, and how Maori children are over exposed to that advertising.

I’m thinking, how does the TV know when Maori children are watching? Facebook and Google serve advertising based in previous content. How does a cat video turn into alcohol advertising for a Maori but not an Indian or Asian?

  They track every click you make. Part of the reason for Google Ads is revenue. The other part is to get Google tracking onto as many websites as possible. Thus Google get informed any time you click on a page with a google ad on it.
  
  Thus they know what people are doing on the www and can serve up a set of ads that will “work” for you.
  
  So yes, that ad served up in the middle of a cat video will likely be tailored for the audience.

      There is almost certainly no code of the form:
      * Let’s check if he’s Maori.
      * If he’s Maori, then show him booze ads.
      
      Instead it is a system that identifies patterns and then acts according to those patterns. This is all self-training AI stuff.
      
      Some of these are obvious:
      * Person clicked on a car ad, so show him more car ads.
      * People from location X tend to respond well to booze ads around 5.30 pm, so show them more booze ads.
      
      So while it is not strictly targeted based on race etc, it is targeted based on behaviour. This could end up looking racist along the lines of throwing crims in prison looks racist to some because more Maori end up in prison.

        But even with ad blockers etc, they can still do a lot of tracking (they can’t do some of the cookie-based tracking), but at least it saves your eyeballs from a relentless stream of ads.

      It ‘s been going on for a long time but in the modern era has ramped up with seat belts in cars , drink driving campaigns , yep all good( to a degree) but now it extends almost to everything.
      
      Tobacco’s another big one to attack . Note the National Party smashed a legal private property right at the behest of the Maori Party and health lobby for a smoke free NZ 2025.
      
      These targets are now a big thing with the control freaks and extend to every walk of life . Food production and consumption , how basic is that .
      
      More targets re CO2 .

        It’s because, with women in charge, everybody must be safe all the time. All risks are bad.
        I think we are learning the ways women are daft. We know how men are daft, but women are a newer element. (For the record, my partner & family females are for the most part competent operators).
        We have to give them constructive negative feedback. I don’t like to do it, most don’t, but I think that’s the solution. You can’t keep everybody safe all the time. Women rightly fear risk. Guys need it.

    The promoters of this rubbish need to actually go to some sporting fixtures.
    I looked at the coverage of the recent All Blacks test. I didnt see any alcohol promotion.
    Similar at the All Whites game v Australia.
    Alcohol promtion at Super Rugby and Provincial levels are negligible.
    The rugby club of which I am a member depends on local sponsorship (and parents such as my self).
    While major international suppliers of beverages are sponsors of my yacht club, they do not sponsor our youth sailing or regional, national or international sailing regattas.
    I think in short this is a solution looking for a problem.

      Very fortunate this is environmentally friendly gas, not methane produced by cows as part of the carbon neutral methane/CO² cycle.
      Other sources of environmentally friendly gas include the billions of tons of methane and CO² produced by cultivating soils to produce food for our most virtuous vegans who believe no one should fly to Fiji – except themselves and maybe family and friends.

The German people are becoming restless with the winter and an energy shortage looming and want Russian gas. This looks like a See-Eye-Aye operation to stop them from making a deal with Vladimir.   I think we know who is behind this. With temperatures falling in Europe, support was waning for the war in Ukraine and there were talks of deals being done. The Germans in particular were making noises about making a deal. The election result in Italy shook many people.
  
  This is a Hern á n Cortés moment. When he arrived in the new world with his 600 men (sorry, gender neutral people /s). He burned the ships they came on making a clear statement. There is no turning back. This means this conflict is not ending any time soon.
  It’s also a direct attack on Russian infrastructure.

        If he had blown them up, THEN invaded Ukraine your argument would make some sense. They are already firmly established in Ukraine and about to launch a major offensive on the Ukrainian lines. They don’t need an “excuse” to do that.
        
        The recent land gains by Ukraine came at horrendous cost in lives and equipment I believe. We’ll see what the autumn rains bring, then the winter snow and ice.

  Ok from experience there are 3 likely scenarios.
  1. Sabotage from a sub. Verry common and a few years back a american sub nearly got sunk unofficially of course.
  2. Fire a plug down pipe and perforate it with explosives. Very simple and cpmmon operation.
  3. Caused by anchoring or trawling. However 2 to 3 leaks in different places doesnt wash.
  If need be too repair is not a big job howver geopolitics is what this about.
  Interesting this happened in the Danish sector who have very sub surveillance for Russian subs.
  There can only be 2 likely operators responsible.

Listening to the radio this morning, I had the misfortune of hearing that a petition had been raised to support Genter’s Alcohol Harm Bill. The news reader in question, made the statement that “there was a mood for change” with regard to our alcohol laws and around advertising. Apparently, the miserable 8,000 signatures they go signifies a mood for change. That statement was then ratified by a spokeswoman from some Maori do good organisation who claimed that it used to be “so difficult to get people to sign petitions against alcohol”. Well sweetheart, I have some news for you, 8,000 signatures is meaningless. You are still having difficulty getting signatures. And the reason is, only a tiny, tiny minority agrees with you.

Was it just coincidence that the much-heralded maiden flight was intended to deliver Jacinda Ardern to the United Nations and a host of promotional opportunities in the Big Apple? Or was there work behind the scenes between Air New Zealand and the Prime Minister’s office to get this flight up and running before the airline was fully ready?

        Well my view is that we have to get Labour/Green out.
        
        I’m not very enamoured with Luxon, and while Seymour can also be a bit bendy depending on which was the wind blows, he’s also less equivocal than Luxon.
        
        So my vote at the moment will go to ACT, to help get a centre-right government in, but also hopefully to give ACT sufficient leverage that National doesn’t think their shit don’t stink.
        
        * Co governance has to be unwound.
        * Letting criminals run loose has to be confronted.
        * The Treaty has to be clearly placed in the context it belongs: an agreement that Maori and non-Maori live side by side with the same rights and obligations under the same law.
        * Fiscal policy must be brought under restraint. Spraying money like this is unsustainable.
        * Core social services – health and education – need substantial attention

        rouppe, everything you asked for has in fact been confirmed or promised by Luxon. As others have said above, Luxon can’t give an opinion on everything (else he’ll get shredded by the MSM and he’ll be no better than H1 chipping in with her 2 cents worth when it is not her role), just because a microphone is stuck in his face.
        
        Remember to be elected government National has to position itself and sound like a government, not a barking dog opposition chasing every passing car. Also, any mis-step comments by Luxon on any sundry topic will be remembered by the media, and brought back to haunt. These rules of politics apply to Luxon because he is more likely to be PM than Seymour who will be there in a support role.

    Chris Luxon is no longer CEO of Air NZ and it would be quite improper for him to opinionate on Air NZ operations or the current CEO. Also Air NZ makes its own commercial decisions so it is not the role of the National Party to get involved with this. The most important for National is to make effective use of its resources to win the next election and not to be sidetracked by peripheral issues such as AirNZ and NZ1..

        I disagree David.
        
        Firstly, if he is PM, Luxon will not be the ‘Shareholding Minister’. Those Ministers will be the Ministers of State Owned Enterprises and Finance. So, as PM, he will absolutely avoid publicly commenting on the business of Air New Zealand.
        
        Secondly, Air New Zealand is not a SOE. It was created as a company under the ‘Mixed Ownership Model’ when the Key Government partially privatised the power generators. There are strict protocols for the Shareholding Ministers to deal with these companies so as to not be seen to disenfranchise the retail shareholders. Those protocols certainly exclude shareholding Ministers from random public comments about the companies.

  I think that is unlikely. The commencement date was announced several months ago. The planning for the route has been going on for four years. (The commencement was delayed by the pandemic.)
  
  The airline was as “fully ready” as it could be IMO. The challenges of the return flight will be solved in 2024. Air New Zealand will take delivery of new 787-9 planes configured specifically for the route (and planned new ultra long routes). These aircraft will have more business and premium economy seats. They will also have more efficient engines that will provide an additional 800 km of range.
  
  The only way in which Air New Zealand could have totally avoided the risks of refuelling stops would have been to delay the route until 2024.
  
  I think it is likely that the problems will lessen. Firstly, they will get better at judging loads, choosing to leave more economy seats empty. Secondly, Ohakea base will reopen after renovations. Ohakea will then be the diversion airfield if Auckland is closed. At present, the plane needs to carry enough fuel to divert to Christchurch.

    I remember doing a “hot and high” take-off with Qantas from Johannesburg to Sydney when they had to wait for the temp drop before even thinking of doing it. They knew that with their weight and the altitude at just what point they could safely take off. They still used almost all of a very long runway to get airborne!!

  Its time for the idiots promoting Te Reo to explain to me and everyone else how Te Reo fluency benefits anyone with undertaking International trade, travel for business and leisure outside of this beautiful land, education in many specialist areas like Telecommunications, Engineering etc etc etc …..
  
  The are reasons that a luminary and Maori tikanga expert like Sir Apirana Ngata wanted Maori children educated in English. So they could be comfortable and successful in both the Maori and non Maori worlds.
  
  And Sir Apirana grew up in a Maori world where many of his elders would have had first hand experience of at least the Land Wars and some no doubt at least the tail end of the Musket Wars, as he was born in 1874! So he knew what the hell he was talking about in terms of the utility of the Maori language in an increasing complex world…
  
  All the current fervour for all things Maori is so misplaced it is almost Kafkaesque in its stupidity. Preserving the language and cultural is for Maori. Its not going to survive if they try and force it on non maori as it has no utility in most of our lives….

    No different to the other retail corporates repatriating profits off shore. What is the difference between profits for any number of companies operating in NZ repatriating money to the US, UK, Germany, India, Australia, Italy, France, Japan, or even China?
    
    The fault is with New Zealanders believing the bs we have been subjected to by politicians, bureaucrats and the commercial sector that the globalisation that has occurred over the past 40 years has been good for NZ and Kiwis. The question is are we as New Zealanders going to do something about, or just moan about it?
    
    In the case of Costco, this is a long waited for shot in the arm NZ retail has required, because NZ consumers have been being fleeced by the retail sector for a very long time. The other good thing about Costco’s arrival is the putting pressure on the Supermarket duopoly to fix some of the rip off practices they indulge in with suppliers and the brand activation companies (third party shelf stacking mechandisers).

    In a very rare event I went through McDonalds drive through a few days ago after working late, and they had Te Reo labels on some of the burgers.
    
    The queue was very long and slow as it was the day the mandates were lifted. Which gave me time to view the Te Reo translations as might a foreigner – by using Google Translate on my smart phone.
    
    I was surprised to learn that I could buy a “Palm Tree”, or “Palm Tree”, Chips and a drink as a combo.
    
    Either there was a local spelling mistake on the menu board, or the official woke Maori translator who cooks up Te Reo, didn’t reference the translation for “Big Mac” based on existing language structure, or failed to inform Google of said translation.

  I would also make the point that “facts”, much like statistics, can be easily manipulated. The Stuff reporter can cherry-pick just the particular facts that support their particular agenda and ignore the other inconvenient facts that don’t.
  
  As I have posted previously, Stuff‘s constant crusading, championing of “causes” and forceful pushing of agendas eventually led to me refusing to visit their site as much as possible. I feel that I can not trust Stuff to report on the important issues facing New Zealand and the world in a neutral manner, to examine all sides of an issue fairly and without bias or prejudice. I do not trust Stuff to present reports that might contain facts that they didn’t like but which are credible and important nonetheless.

      The loss of the knowledge of ceramics, when the ancestors of Polynesians settled the islands and dwelt on land with no clay, meant that pottery production was no longer possible/known by the time they reached NZ. This actually makes metal working (& smelting/casting/annealing) unlikely to ever be accidently discovered.
      
      While there were ancient ceramic makers in places such as Fiji (the ‘Lapita’ culture) there was a loss of technology as humans moved outwards. – Some islands did not even have stone suitable for stone tools, like stone adzes, for instance.
      
      So without the manufacture of ceramics, the accidental discovery of copper casting, then bronze and then iron smelting was almost certainly not going to happen.
      Because the first metals recovered from ore are thought (correctly in my view) as being discovered as a byproduct of ceramic furnaces.
      Even then, ceramic making cultures didn’t all discover metal working, although it was theoretically discovered in more than one place in ancient times (ancient America and Mesopotamia, perhaps China), there is much more evidence of transmission of the knowledge from distant locations via indirect means, especially specific techniques around casting or annealing.

The military are always keen to hand out campaign medals and ribbons (even handing them out to celebrate things like jubilees). But, it seems the soldiers are not keen to get recognition for their efforts in running MIQ. It looks like they see it for what it really was: an unwarranted, painful blot on our history.

  The number of Military personnel who took discharge post their MIQ tour of duty has been phenomenal and given the cost of their professional Military training has proven to be a blight on this current Govt.
  Now, given the differences in wages offered to people with military backgrounds and self-discipline by Civilian Employers, the Military can’t compete on the recruitment front.

SH1 near Awanui up North is closed indefinitely. Why? Is NZ unable to repair roads anymore? Is some prick at Waka Kotahi forming a working group to have a little think about it?.
For fuck’s sake get the Americans in to do it. Anchorage 2017 outside out motel the seal was stripped, re-layed, and roadmarked overnight. 4 lanes over about 250 meters. Overnight!!
Earthquake in Alaska 2018. The off ramp from the motorway/freeway into the airport was severely damaged. Alaska/Anchorage need incoming supplies. This is December – freezing cold. Person in charge got the asphalt/bitumen CEO and told him to get the plant running and seal heated up pronto. This road was dug out, filled, compacted, sealed, and roadmarked in 72 hours. Got that/ 72 hours, 3 days ffs.
In NZ we just close the road indefinitely. What is wrong with this picture? Too many arse warmers in NZ?

  I was in Vancouver in a motel north side of its harbour bridge about 1970. They resealed the entire bridge overnight.
  
  The southern approach to Whangarei has been incompleted roadworks for at least three years mostly with nothing happening. Unbelievable utter incompetence.
  
  Sure the SH1 gorge problem is slips, hills and instability but the political clowns running the show instead of engineers are an embarrassment and a disgrace.

    Resealing the bridge is no mean feat. In NZ just get the Americans in to do it. NZ just fucks around – all hui and no do-ey.
    In Alaska that earthquake damaged the Rail line between Anchorage and Seward. Repaired in less that 40 hours. This is in Dec, cold winter (-25C) Seward is where the fuel comes in from the lower 48. Needed for heating.
    Note, crude oil goes out at Valdez. Alaska has no refinery.
    
    That previous link I sent to Fulton Hogan in 2018. Asked them if they could do that job in less than 5 years. Got no reply.

  Singapore 1983. Staying in the Mandarin on Orchard Road. Can’t remember how many lanes there were but at least 8. Went for a walk after dinner and at least 2 lanes had been dug up to about 2 metres deep and a couple of hundred metres long. Workmen and machinery swarming all over it. In the hole were pipes and cables and all sorts of infrastructure. In the morning we looked out our window and job done. Hole filled, road resealed and repainted. She was in last night as VIP customer, trolley bulging with stuff … but $60 to join, petrol and airport parking to invercargill to then catch return flight to Auckland not to mention the transport from Auckland airport to Costco and accommodation/food ….     Real change in New Zealand would require a shock IMO. That could be the lights going out South African style, or electricity price rises UK style. Maybe escalating tension with Maori over co-governance that leads to conflict.
    
    Look at the last poll – 43 percent of people would vote Green or Labour. New Zealand is now a divided society. I might worry about the crashing education system and the housing catastrophe and the welfare underclass. But I am in a small minority.
    
    Just look at Education – the “Briefing for the Incoming Minister” prepared by the Ministry of Education after the 2020 election did not even mention falling literacy attainment as a problem.

  Look at three waters and the fact that they need a 75% supermajority for anything to change.
  
  With 50% Maori and 50% LG the Maori bloc only need to vote against anything they do not want and the LG bloc needs to get at least 25% Maori to vote LG’s way for anything to change.
  
  So the upshot is if Maori don’t like it isnt going to happen.
  
  There is NOTHING ‘co’ about that.

  The premise behind the vote is interesting. My significant other spent a lot of time working for our local PlayCentre in days gone by. A few years ago, PlayCentre head office was captured & corporatised (same as Plunket & others) by a bunch of women looking to bludge big salaries. All local assets forcibly transferred to head office. Existing staff driven out by forcing new qualifications (aka re-education). Mass refresh for the worse, local PlayCentres closing.

Just drove down Dixon St, Wellington near Pigeon Park, the great people at Wellington City Council have just succeeded in taking out 80% of the car parks and put in their lovely planter boxes in place of carparks. So keeping plants alive in there will add immensely to maintenance costs and erase any parking revenue from those parks.

My heart really goes out to the retailers, restauranteurs and business owners in that area. It’s tough enough as it is without these sort of manuouvres. I guess that’s what you get with a council full of Green party members.

I hear they have their sights on pedestrianising Lambton Quay which will just make that area into a lovely playground for the increasing number of homeless and street people in Wellington and taggers.

  What really pissed me off was my favourite TV Meal only had two days of [Use BY] remaining and when I asked the guy stacking the shelves if they had any with long life remaining, he didn’t understand me. And the Govt calls that progress FFS.

Was on the ‘front page’ of Stuff for all of about 10 minutes. Then pulled and sat down under ‘National News’ – not the front section, you actually have to drill down to find it.
Now why would this be hidden ?
Perhaps a call from the Beehive pointing out that this contravenes the PIJF agreement ? After all, Kelvin Davis says talking about this contravenes the Treaty…!
Perhaps a Stuff senior editor took the initiative themselves and had it taken down.
Imagine if this was a National Party or Act President. How long do you think this would stay up ? Perhaps lead item on tonight’s News ?

But there is no corruption in New Zealand.

  Don’t forget, Willie Jackson (Min of Broadcasting) and John Tamahere used to do a Radio Show together. I’d suggest Tamahere is being protected by his mates eh?

After all, says the judge, the seventeen of them only punched, kicked and stomped on their victims for 30 seconds. And they didn’t use guns, knives, baseball bats etc. And their victims, apart from the blood on the pavement, seem fine now.
So despite their violent history, it’s back to the community for them.
No wonder there is such a high turnover for Police, when the crims just get sent back to do it all again.

I went to Stuffed again. Once again Sharon Murdoch misses the points against 3 waters to bash the opposition.

How will the water entities will be held accountable for their actions with unelected representatives? Sure things need to change, but Murdoch is putting it as a black and white issue as if 3 waters is the magic bullet and the only way to fix things, where it’s not.

Yes, there are some parts of the country – Wellington being a good example – where the council failed to invest in water infrastructure, but that’s a long way from being widespread. Previously perhaps Havelock North a couple of years ago? That was quickly contained.

Since when does beef mince have to be consumed withing 2 or 3 days ?
Beef, when prepared and stored properly, will last for several weeks.
This is what happens for whole fillets and scotch fillets at a butcher.
It is aged beef, and superior to fresh beef.

If a supermarket is saying the “best before” date is only a couple of days then their meat is already old and unsold, probably due to being overpriced.
