Kiwigreg’s link gives us a perfect example of stupid rightwing thinking. Firstly the department should have rejected the request for both pullover and shoes because I doubt if you can get a decent pullover for less than $70 these days and the last pair of shoes I bought cost me $200 after several years of foollishly buying at the warehouse where the shoes are big and clunky. They compound this waste by letting him take them to court … completely idiotic.
I dislike the idea of too many people going to op-shops becuase then there will be nothing worthwhile there for me to find … last purchase was $2.50 for a quality but a bit worn sports jacket, $700 at Bob Shepard’s …. Next day I donated the jacket that cost me $10 a year or so ago, it was a bit tight around the shoulders, in return 🙂 When visiting the States a few years back I found a quite nice sleeveless jacket by a top American supplier [ Katmandu equiv.] for just US$10 in an op-shop. Still my favourite jacket 🙂

Question to Starboard – why can’t blogs run themselves however they like? Isn’t it their business how they want to moderate/filter/censor?

DPF is staunchly pro free speech and open discussion, but there are some on Kiwiblog who would prefer to suppress anyone they disagree with, the only difference to them and what you claim about Red Alert is that they don’t run their own blogs.

Sounds bad, but is it? A few warrants granted, criminals prosecuted as a result.

Police say in the year to June 2009, there were 68 interception warrant applications granted and 157 people prosecuted as a result of those interceptions.

Not sure what you are getting at Petey too. Is SIS communications monitoring a factor in male suicides?

157 prosecutions from 68 sounds reasonable, but what isn’t stated is how many of the interceptions did not result in a prosecution. They may be due to unjustified interest, or not getting sufficient interest to proceed to prosecution.

Judges can have all sorts of biases. And interception warrants have to find or corroborate something illegal to have any real effect.

I’m aware of the relative powerlessness of men in family court issues. I doubt that interception warrants are a major factor, there are a lot of easier ways for men to be legally screwed.

As long as it has judicial oversight that is robust I don’t have a problem with it.
Now they need to list all the same terrorist orgs as Australia and a few more.
Unless they are using NZ as a conduit to watch them of course.

Any government can through laxity let someone slip through the cracks. But a government that refuses to admit that we are at war, indeed, refuses even to name the enemy — jihadist is a word banished from the Obama lexicon — turns laxity into a governing philosophy.

Sorry, MikeNZ, but I don’t agree.

1) Quite simply, the pen is mightier than the sword. This is a battle that must be fought with words, not just with guns. Defining the enemy as “disturbed individuals” carrying out “criminal acts” is far smarter than glorifying them as “warriors fighting a holy war”.

2) Calling the bombers “Islamists” or anything similar is tainting a whole religion of a billion adherents with the insane actions of a tiny minority. It would be like denouncing Kiwi criminals as Christian criminals because most of them are technically Christians. It is a perfect way to radicalise the other 999,990,000 Muslims by blaming them by implication – thus achieving exactly what the bombers want.

Now, I am perfectly willing to point the finger over incompetence, but the tactics being used in the battle of language have actually become smarter since Obama became president.

Gulag didn’t note this this story is by the loathsome Nicky Hager.

What a hypocrite. Hager, who claims to have used stolen emails in smearing Don Brash, objects to police and security powers to monitor net traffic. Is Hager frightened the powers may uncover the Parliamentary email thieves?

I read a few comments about Trevor Mallard this morning.
He uses Red Blurt to boost his ego as a control freak. Anything he goes not agree with is termed trolling and gets moderated or deleted. On a bad hair day the commenter gets a permanent ban. Some of us in NZ do not like ex schoolteachers pushing us around just to earn brownie points in front of their mates.

What if the climate flips into a rapid onset ice age? That could cause a lot more problems than warming. Burning more oil and coal wouldn’t help for long.

Either way I doubt any major trend will be apparent in my lifetime. A decade is a very short timespan to prove anything like this, one season means nothing.

jcuknz – $200 for a pair of shoes? I shoe our whole family for that. We buy all our shoes at No1 Shoe Warehouse – eseically good when they have their Buy 2 get third one free deal. I am happy with what I get. My son has odd feet, and I was looking at rugby boots for him this year and because he has flat and wide feet trying to find decent brands that fitted him was nigh impossible. We were looking at $200-$300 pairs of boots. Walked into No1 and found a pair that fit like a glove for $34.00. He had his best year of rugby ever, and was able to play complete game without hurting his feet. That bludger in the linked story should have budgeted.

Brian Smaller — each to their own — For years I have bought ‘cheap’ shoes and saw no point in buying different. But the trouble with cheap shoes is that you have to keep on replacing them also heavy and clunky for my old feet [ very stylish 🙂 ]. For a growing child this makes sense as they grow out of them but for an adult it doesn’t. Though with the cost of repair, $35 just to renew the heels of a pair of shoes I’ve had for well over twenty years, it makes you question things. I would say that the discount importers were to be credited with appreciating that the average kiwi has broad feet and brought in shoes to fit us. In the old days I had to search and search for broad fittings.
