Has anyone given any thought to the idea that raising the driving age to 16 won’t actually change anything for the “at risk” 17-19 year old drivers, and in fact just ensures they are less experienced? A bit like raising the drinking age to prevent 14 year olds binge drinking really.
Also about it being in line with the school leaving age – yes, 16 is when you can leave school, but you still need to actually have a license not a learner’s permit. The idea of a learner’s permit log book appeals though as then there is a definite amount of experience, rathar than an amount of time passing.
I really feel this is a bit ill concieved, and reeks of the government just copying bad ideas from other countries.
I want to see statistics about how many crashes are due to the age of the driver vs the experience of the driver, and what other factors are involved, before I can support this move.

Is anyone aware of whether the family of Halatau Naitoko was going to be paid any kind of compensation at all? This story just got me thinking today.
I’m not normally one to call for more govt spending on anything, but it would seem only right that when a breadwinner and hardworking young guy lies dead at the hands of the police (accidentally of course) that there would be some kind of help given to his family.

I think the minor licence tweaks are small change, I don’t think they are important. What is important about it is whether this twiddling is symptomatic of playing safe on everything or just on things that aren’t critical.

The Herald editorial touches on this:

This is a very conservative Government. If there was any doubt about the caution of John Key’s Cabinet it has been dispelled by its decision on the driving age.

It augurs badly for bigger decisions that need to be made soon.

Ie tax and welfare reform. Can Key be bold where it really matters?

On the driver age, you really have to ask why the Nats would want to take another cut out of Rural dwellers, for little or no gain. Do they really want to alienate voters?

Who else are the rural voters going to vote for?

Paradoxically, political parties don’t have to worry too much about pissing off their core constituency, since those people aren’t going anywhere anyway. It’s the ones on the borders that they have to court.

(of course, they can push it too far — witness Labour and the creation of the Maori Party)

Idle thought: If I were in charge, I’d put a restriction on the power-to-weight ratio of vehicles. Basically, I’d limit _everyone_ to wussy cars only. Then, I’d introduce a new licence class, above the current “full” licence, that allows you to buy powerful cars. This new class would have stricter requirements, regular testing, and wouldn’t be available to people until age 20.

Results:
– No increased cost / inconvenience to anyone
– People can still drive fast cars if they want to
– But people who go for the new licence will have to improve their skills, raising the average driver ability

Phase it in over 10 years or so so that we can increase the number of trainers, and so that expensive cars don’t lose value too quickly.

I have been looking on the net for any information that the NZ government will be sending aid to Chile and so far their pledge seems to be zilch. Also, there have been no appeals for donations on any radio station that I have heard. No 0900 pledge campaign. Nothing.

I think that this is really bad. What kind of a country are we?

nickb, I know Richard, the bloke who was peppered with fragments of one of the bullets that missed Halatau Naitoko. Richard now lives with them permanently in his left arm, he’s left handed, because they’re to close to vital nerves to be removed safely. He was a self employed blacksmith but since the shooting he’s been unable to work and has had to close his business. The police gave him a one off payment of $2000.

Talking about paying for welfare and other stuff, it looks like one US Senator possibly unhinging could prevent pays for unemployment benefits and many other things, such is the way things work (or fail to work) in the Senate.

Hundreds of thousands of unemployed workers faced an end to their jobless benefits Monday, and the federal government furloughed about 2,000 employees without pay, as a result of Bunning’s efforts to block legislation that would fund $10 billion in federal programs.

Well I fall in neither camp because I believe there is need for change, just not on age. All they are doing is putting inexperienced 16yr olds on the roads instead of inexperienced 15 yr olds. In my opinion this change is likely to have a negative affect on the driving ability of 16 and 17 yr olds, so on that basis it is a deeply flawed change.

I think restrictions on the power of vehicles is the way to go. Does anyone know a 15, 16 or 17 yr old that really NEEDS a turbo charged Subaru or GTR?

But now some students are already monitored by electronic device, as some parents will follow soon. The force instills fear: because one has a record, he/she is expected to remain silence. This has been recently demonstrated by the British subject stranded in India, and the beneficiary who boasted about advocating free speech and civil rights.
In other words, if you speak up you are likely to be a target of the regime by restricting your freedom and access to services. Be afraid and remain silent or face the might of the @#$%^& ruler….

I don’t care what Australia gave. I don’t want our government giving any taxpayer money to charity. If people want to donate, then feel free. There will be private charities who can take donated money and get it to where it is needed.

No, but my son at 15 could have got his licence and used our old Holden to get to his holiday jobs. Now I either give up work to taxi him about or he sits on his arse all day doing nothing.

Yes. Especially if it came from private individuals concerned about us. I would be happy enough if our government sent some docs/rescue workers over there, or perhaps all our RMA bureaucrats to oversea the construction of Chile’s new buildings (that would speed up construction/recovery in both countries).

But if a major earthquake flattened one of our cities I would be surprised if we got any significant help. Out of interest, how much international help did Japan get after Kobe? or Italy after Udine? Anyone know?

Raising the driving age is completely indecorous: how often are teenage drivers involved in casualties actually 15 years of age? Many of whom are actually between the ages of 16 and 21.

The agricultural industry stands to suffer, at 15 children are often required to drive the family tractors, etc. Due to the distance of some schools in rural areas, it was common practice for students to drive to and from school: this will now be more difficult to obtain as the period between a learners and a restricted becomes longer to achieve.

This is National trying to “look good” in terms of “tougher penalties” for the small-minded, some of us haven’t forgotten that Jenny Shipley lowered the drinking age to 18 as a desperate election bribe – but lets not go there.

Today there are restrictions on motorbikes. You cannot drive over 250cc until you get a full license after 2 years. I don’t see why a similar restriction couldn’t apply to cars. Not necessarily on engine size, but on power.

Usually this is where compulsory insurance also can play a role.

I’ve just finished reading Ann Coulter’s “Guilty”, wherein she eviscerates the mainstream media for the lying politically partisan cowards and cheap con artists they all are.

I defy anyone to read that book and not be utterly revolted at the tactics of Progressives and Liberals posing as journalists. All this comparison with Aussie license ages is spurious for another reason.
In NZ a kid can buy a reasonably good car very cheaply including being able to pay for it or finance it. Try buying a cheap car in Aussie.
Cars that here would fetch a few thousand dollars sell for over 10 thousand there. Kids don’t buy them because they can,t. They don’t have the cash. Ironic really when one considers the wages rates but still Rudd has fixed that as kids at school can no longer work part time. Rudd has stopped employers from employing them.

Do the Nats do any research that doesn’t get feed from bullshit castles in Wellywood. Apt name by the way. Holly wood has been making up shit for years. Looks like Wellywood is on the same track.

A power to weight ratio is probably more valid restriction, even on motorbikes.

I believe that is what the government is actually proposing now.

Weight is relevant to a motorbike because heavier ones are harder to ride and control, power has nothing to do with it. Weight does have a relationship with engine capacity with bikes which is why the restriction is by engine capacity.

Power to weight ratios for cars are also irrelevant. Bad riving is bad driving no matter what the car. The authoritarian approach to this sort is idiotic and produces absurd results.

This is the type of muddle-headed thinking that creates aother generation of people who have no idea what the value of anything is until they eventually get a job and discover that you actually have to work to buy the shit you want, not bludge off Mum and Dad. Except that tons of them still bludge of Mum and Dad when they should be out on their own. It is bad enough here where kids under 14 cannot get paid jobs.

I disagree, I think it’s sensible. Poor driving experience has certainly got to do with it, hence you should restrict the access to the more powerful cars and motorcyles to young drivers, who tend to be inexperienced.

That’s what the government is going to look into as well

Currently holders of learner and restricted motorcycle licences are restricted to riding motorcycles of 250 cc and less. This is because larger and more powerful bikes increase crash risk; and novice riders have more crashes per vehicle kilometres travelled
than experienced riders.

However, recent advances in technology are limiting the effectiveness of the restriction. A number of powerful highperformance
250 cc motorcycles capable of high speeds and rapid acceleration are available on the market. These motorcycles are not suitable for novice riders due to their power, riding position and handling. Advances in motorcycle power and performance are likely to continue.

To better reflect the intent of the cc restriction, we could replace it with a power-to-weight ratio limit of 150 kilowatts per
tonne. A 660 cc restriction for learner and restricted motorcycle licensed riders would also apply to ensure motorcycles are not
too physically large for novice riders.

This restriction would give novice riders access to a greater range of motorcycles appropriate for their level of experience, including more that have safety features like automatic braking systems. It will also provide a more progressive step to larger
bikes than the 250 cc restriction. Evidence from overseas jurisdictions shows a power-to-weight restriction encourages novice riders to stay on a less powerful bike for longer than a 250 cc restriction after their restriction period ends. This is positive for safety as familiarity with a motorcycle reduces crash risk.

New South Wales and Queensland ban the use of V8s, turbo and supercharged vehicles, modified vehicles and certain high performance six cylinder vehicles. There are exemptions for those that need to drive a high-powered car for work. We will investigate whether vehicle power restrictions for young drivers should be introduced in New Zealand. This investigation will include evaluating the effectiveness of the Australian restrictions in reducing young driver crash risk.

A request for help…..

Is anyone aware of a good child support blog for fathers?

And I am not a person whom is not trying to pay there way by any means, just have some questions….. Child Support told me today that I need to live with a woman with kids to reduce my payments, amazing that you get stung for being a single parent and being single, give me strength….

Come on, guys. I want to contact Jim McClay to thank him for joining the civilised nations of the world at the UN and voting for further investigation into the Goldsmith reports on war crimes in the Gaza massacre.

And I wish to politely enquire the basis of this statement:

JIM MCLAY ( New Zealand) said his country had voted in favour because it supported credible investigations into the conflict, but had abstained from previous votes which endorsed the biased action of the Human Rights Council on the issue.

Just announced in Australia, healthcare funding is to be stripped from states and territories and centralised within the Federal Government.

Nationalisation of funding, if not delivery. I’m a little unsure on those details, but the report said all GPs come under the Federal Government but individual hospitals deliver the services.

STUPID IDEA!

I’ve been driving one way my whole life and all of a sudden they expect you to do something else? It won’t just be me either. If they do change the rule it will be total mayhem on the roads!

It was a stupid idea in 1977 to change from what we had, but we coped.
NZ is the only country with this rule, but we are special….. We need to be told what to do. Just watch the fuckwits at the intersections when the lights fail. omg omg no lights help. They have no idea.
We coped in 77, so we cope now, just wake up and be aware on the road.

Remember Mohsen al-Attar and his precious Third World perspectives law course? According to him, thanks to Farrar’s coverage of it:

What this bunch of simpering wheedling parasites will not deal with is the simple fact that if all of the claimed listeners contributed only $60 per annum each they could have their damn commie propaganda station to themselves. Yet they insist on having it funded by people who don’t even want it or listen to it or believe government needs to be in the entertainment business. Self interested narcissistic abusers of the democratic process.
