Good win for the Black Caps this morning in the T20 World Cup on a difficult wicket. If only NZ could abondon test cricket altogether (we do not have the resources to be competitive – Players, or Pitches – our players do not have the required technique or the patience because our pitches are so variable, and our bowlers do not appear to have the physique or the stamina to be consistent world class top line bowlers (Hadlee excepted). The Black Caps could concentrate on 50 over and T20 where they are up with best, and train as for baseball. Short form cricket is the future.

Schools may be sued over bullies
Schools have been warned that they run a “real risk” of being sued if they are slack in dealing with bullying.

The warning, from the biggest secondary school principals’ union, is backed by a lawyer, who says schools could face lawsuits of up to $100,000.

And Education Minister Anne Tolley has urged boards of trustees and parents to work together to ensure everything is done to protect pupils.

Slack in dealing with bullies? If a kid is a bully, it is an issue for their parents’s deal with. Schools simply experience the consequence of parent’s slackness. Under anything other than a Marxist-inflused system, schools are places of education – they should not be state-directed instruments for correction for social ills.

Tolly should be careful pointing the finger. The MoE has made it increasingly difficult to expell violent and/or disruptive kids. Oh, and I can see hungry Lawyers supporting this threat of lawsuits. Oh what a business opportunity.

If Tod Blackadder gets the same as Gits (how apt is that nickname) I have got 5$ for the cause, DICKeson penalised the Crusaders out of the breakdown, and Reid’s yellow made a Stormers win a cert. Does the Dick not get counter rucking as about the only way for a legal turnover.

There is no better way to start the weekend than hearing that news that Crusaders were thrashed in South Africa last night.

At least that might put an end to the idiotic idea (pushed by the Sheep shaggers) of the most embarrassing All Black captain of all time (Blackadder) ever taking over as the coach of the national team.

It might also wake up some people to the fact that McCaw is useless bloody captain and continues a long line of Canterbury captains who go missing when the heat is on.

Man the lifeboats! At this rate a 1cm rise will take 210 years. Perhaps if we move back to the stone age (caves, no electricity, no fuel [except for the ruling class…]) we’ll be able to stretch that terrible day out to 250 years. All keen? Great! Let’s kick things off with our ETS then.

I’m not usually so cynical about politics – even though there is plenty to be cynical about. However, the following piece describing the ‘choices’ that Britain faces in their coming election really does demonstrate what an increasing farce it all is:

I have been getting a good chuckle at all the lefties on this forum who’ve been blissfully treating righties here as simple partisans for right-wing parties the world-over. I’ve not seen too many of the latter glorying in a possible victory by Cameron and co – and even when I’ve seen it the crowing (or pre-crowing) has been a flat-out joy at the sight of left-wingers being unable to say that the people are with them – not any sense that the right-wing party will actually do any good.

Sometimes it’s tempting to think we should just leave the left in charge, so that there are no excuses as the Western social-welfare state implodes over the next 2-3 decades. Sadly though I don’t think the left would learn anything from even as catastrophic experience as that. It will always be the fault of someone else (I’m guessing capitalists).

In general I agree. However IMO schools are sometimes playing fast and loose with suspensions/expulsions. The only ‘remedy’ is High Court action which is expensive and time consuming. Schools know this and this influences their decision making. A review tribunal is needed IMO to ensure decisions are properly made but such an idea has been strenuously resisted by the School Trustees Association.

Governments cannot just point the finger at Boards of Trustees for things like bullying, boiler explosions etc. More is needed. In large urban areas, there can be special schools as currently exist in some cases, but outside these the local college is the only show in town and these need to be resourced to deal with troublesome pupils.

It would seem that a few extra dollars on vote:education would be far less than extra costs on votes: welfare, police, corrections, etc as well as general costs to the community. For example a college pupil punched a teacher a few years ago. In the old days it probably have been handled in the traditional way at minimal cost. Nowadays the episode could cost a million dollars in the long term.

This General Debate so I can share a story that is very unusual.
Monday 19th I got a cheque in the mail from Awhina Ltd of London, England for GBP7000.00. I do not know why the cheque was sent to me and had never heard of the drawer. It was hand written and the spelling on the envelope and the cheque was immaculate. I banked the cheque and was credited with NZD14,687.37. Yesterday my folly in banking the cheque was punished. The cheque was bounced and my account debited with NZD15,078.51. $391.14 down the tubes, some would say, because of my greed. Plus search costs on the company of GBP10.00 which revealed that the company’s sole shareholder and director was A.S. Houpapa.
Moral of the story; pennies do not fall from heaven; only excrement does.

@eszett – I’m not upset at all. I’m simply pointing out that the phrase ‘sea level rises’ (as used in the press release) is commonly used by the media to announce an impending human catastrophe, and it is understood my most people in that context. Half a width of a human hair per year is probably not worthy of such association. Again, if you think it is then that’s your prerogative.

I thought we’d argued this to death months ago when considering Bradford’s stupid anti family bill.

And by the way, good use of the emotive “beat” and “beating” – but all in all just the same old tired and repetitive methods used by the progressives. You guys are just so predictable – you need to change your MO to regain some street cred.

No one signed an antis smacking referrendum.

If you are referring to vots in the referendum on the question “Should a smack as part of good parental correction be a criminal offence in New Zealand?” you should keep in mind that the No vote received only 48.9% of the total available vote, seemingly the majority of voters were against you.

I don’t know who Sam Sacheva is or where he was last night. I was with 500-600 peaceful protesters outside the Copthorne. At no stage were we going ‘storm the hotel entrance’. The protest ended peacefully after 90 minutes. Yes we let the people entering the hotel know what we thought about Nick Smith, Bob Parker and their cronies. The only MP who had the guts to walk in the main entrance was Amy Adams. Alasdair Thompson was able to walk past the crowd without any physical threat.

This was not a well organised protest. I heard about the protest at 9pm on Thursday. I had to juggle other commitments to make the protest. Since the protest several people asked me “why didn’t I let them know. They wanted to be there.”

So the Press and Sam Sacheva might just want to report a few facts next time.

I know I make plenty of errors when I type. The proof reading in this piece of propoganda is poor.

One paragraph has no context so I don’t know what they are talking about. I include the paragraph before as well. Can someone tell me what this means?

” Chants included “We can’t drink money”, “You can’t steal our vote and get away with it”, “One- term Bob” and “Don’t pay your rates”.

Smith said only about 250 domestic users would be affected, and the rules would be progressively introduced, starting in two years. “

Nice one, Kris. You are the one saying if you don’t use the rod on your child you hate him. That’s not a light smack, that’s beating. And it’s perverse.

You are the one who claims that we haven’t progressed morally in the last century, yet here you are learning how to raise your child using the morals from 2000 years ago.

If anything is tired and predictable, then it’s your constant insistence that the only thing that will help us if we re-install corporal punishment.

So what you are effectively saying is that this is your one and only method to raise and discipline children. If that is the case, no wonder your children don’t respect you.

This Canterbury Regional Council bit is going on too long, and Nick Smith is not helping.
I am associated with two big users of Canterbury water. The stuff falls from the skies and runs down the Waimakariri River to the sea.
If the flow level at Belfast is high enough we can take water from the river.
If the flow level at Belfast is insufficient to mask the freezing works’ pollution, we cannot take water from the river.
What part of that can the protesters not comprehend?
And that take off is policed. Another bloke in the Rangitata catchment cannot draw off water when the flow at Temuka (why Temuka, I do not know) is at or below a certain level. I even had a registered letter from Ecan when an error occurred. I am not big on Canterbury hydrology but doubt whether Temuka is in the Rangitata catchment.

Malcolm Turnbull, one of Australia’s richest men, a successful merchant banker and a successful barrister in past lives, announces he’s no longer quitting politics because he’s concerned Australia isn’t going to introduce an ETS.

Tony Abbott, you’ll recall, rolled Turnbull for the Liberal leadership by just one vote after a showdown over that party’s climate change policy. Turnbull could have kept the leadership if he’d moderated his insistence on support for an ETS… he chose not to.

So it’s not only vegan lefties who’re in a tizz on the topic… Of course whether their panic is justified is another question altogether. As Ryan notes above, anyone passingly familiar with Archimedes knows melting ice caps are already displacing most of their liquid volume, for instance.

But when someone like Turnbull takes it all so seriously, one has to wonder, surely…?

Before anyone in NZ accept any restraints on building near the foreshore because of supposed rising sea levels, make sure your council has established whether rising tectonic plate movements are actually causing sea levels to fall in your neighbourhood.

And remind your councils that flooding is far more likely to descend from the hills behind than rise up from the seas in front.

You can see what the tectonic plates are doing in your neighbourhood by going to:

The site for the Dunedin harbour is DUND. The available data indicate the measurement site is slowly sinking. This probably accounts for Otago having a slightly higher rate of sea level rise than Auckland – around 1.8 mm/y vs 1.4 mm/y

However, the site for Whakatane (WAKA) shows the plate is rising, while the plate at Whangarei (WHNG) looks vertically stable.

The horizontal movements northward are quite remarkable. Gisborne has moved north 150 mm over the last ten years.

Scotland is bouncing back upwards from the lost weight of all the ice in the last Great Ice Age.
But the British Isles are rotating around and East West Axis so the South of England plate is falling.

These plate movements in NZ (as our plate grinds it way up over the Pacific Plate far outweigh and sea level rising – and especially so when you consider that we are actually measuring the plate rises and falls while the “rising seas” of the alarmists are the result of speculation or computer models which have failed to predict the temperatures of the last ten years. So why should we trust them about the next 100 years or more?

The earth is dynamic. Sea levels depart from the geoid by plus or minus 90 metres from one place on the globe to another.
The IPCC’s talk of “global average sea levels” have nothing to do with the real behaviour of sea levels at real places in the real world and more than saying the average man is 5 feet 10 inches tall means that all men are five foot ten inches tall. The GASL is a statistical artifact.

Chasing pornographers clearly has nothing to do with protecting VIPs so I wonder how it impacts on “the nation’s financial infrastructure and payment systems”? Is the US government worried about the proliferation of counterfeit pornography, perhaps?

Or is this a slip that provides a glimpse of the way the White House, which is all for big government, is (mis)using agencies of state to pry into citizens’ affairs, during which it accidentally stumbled on a porn ring while looking for something else?

Small businesses to score tax breaks

ALMOST two million small businesses will receive faster tax breaks under a shake-up of the tax system to be unveiled on Sunday.

The Rudd Government will allow small firms to claim the full value of some assets as a tax deduction over one year instead of several.

Treasurer Wayne Swan is expected to outline a package of sweeteners to make small businesses one of the big long-term winners from the Henry tax review. It will include tax cuts over time, and investment allowances to buy cars, computers and machinery.

Small business employs five million people and the Government wants to encourage its growth as the backbone of the economy with a pledge to slash red tape so owners can spend less time on paperwork.

Mr Swan said he would not be pre-empting tomorrow’s announcements.

“Small businesses have been a crucial part of our economic success during the global recession and they deserve to be the big long-term winner in our plans for the tax system,” he said.

Australia has 125 taxes ranging from those on income and companies to the obscure 10c Queen Bee levy, specific to the bee industry. The top 10 taxes raise 90 per cent of the revenue collected.

Mr Swan will release the 1000-page review by Treasury Secretary Ken Henry at 2.30pm tomorrow, as well as a government response.

It is expected to:

ABOLISH tax returns for ordinary workers with straightforward tax affairs;

OVERHAUL superannuation tax;

SHAKE-UP alcohol tax;

CONSIDER radical ideas to introduce a congestion charge where motorists pay more for driving in the city at peak hour;

SIMPLIFY childcare benefits.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd promised a “stronger, simpler and fairer” tax system but said there would be winners and losers.

“Some people will celebrate, others will complain and complain loudly,” he said.

One of Australia’s richest men, mining chief Andrew “Twiggy” Forrest, blasted reports there would be a new tax on the super profits of resources companies.

“What you shouldn’t do is kill the golden goose,” he said.

V2, I believe we need an total overhaul of our tax system. Why must it be so complicated?. Why so many rules?. How much money is lost in paying legions of accountants, lawyers and various parasitic worms simply to handle the taxes and Levis imposed by government?. Why do we need a progressive tax system?. What is fair about a progressive tax system? Until this government can explain to me why all this should be so I will remain unimpressed when politicians speak about tax reform.

Same old same old philu, surely you can mount a better argument then the dribble you present here. You watch and listen to to many lies philu. Of course there are problems within our industry but by in large the vast proportion of dairy farms have very little environmental impact and in fact enhance the environment. On our farm alone we must have planted thousands of native trees and fenced miles of waterways. As for our relationship with the sentient beings (oh fucking please), we treat them with as much respect and care as we can offer after all our living depends upon them.

Oh please don’t lose any sleep on whether my children will inherit the farm, they all ready have. A long time ago my wife and myself realised that our children would never be able to own the farm given the high cost of land. We put our land in a trust and the whole family now owns the farm and the children also draw a wage form earnings. One even pays his boarding school fees though this method. The only problem is they will have to buy out their siblings share if the wish to farm alone, hay no system is perfect but it’s a better start then going to the money lenders and asking for 6 million bucks.

As for your ranting about cancer causing white death, fuck put a sock in it two bob, humans have been consuming dairy products for thousands of years and the last time I looked there were still a heap of us walking around. In fact the consumption of dairy products has increased and so has the human lifespan. Goes against the bullshit you spout, maybe just maybe people are getting better food instead of mun beans and lentils and similar such shit that diseased vegans like yourself indulge in.

Did Kim hill show her true colours this morning when interviewing Anthony Lowenstein (find it here)?

Her true colours being historical ignorance, a preoccupation with the Holocaust, and projecting responsibility for that on to Arabs generally, Palestinians specifically, and a blatant disregard for basic humanitarian principles and international law.

An example of her ignorance was her allegation of historical anti-Semitism of Arabs. Firstly, Arabs are Semites (unlike European Ashkenazi Jews), and Arab anti-Semitism, as in anti-Jewish, was initially introduced by European migrants to Arab countries and, understandably, became widespread in the period before and after 1948.

Lowenstein is correct, in my view, when he says the two-state solution is a mirage, as Israel (at least, it’s ruling elite) itself does not want this solution. It wants all of historic Palestine. I am currently forming another, complementary, view on this: the two-state solution is deeply flawed in that it seeks to set in stone an historic wrong and, in the absence of a Palestinian Holocaust at the hands of Israel (highly unlikely, but not impossible to imagine), would always be doomed to end one day.

So why bother.

Antony Loewenstein and Luc Hansen have at least one thing in common – ignorance. It was particularly funny when he thought that Tzipi Livni was a man, and was proud of all of the famous Australian Jews that signed his petition, including Ben Zonar (it may as well have been Hugh Janus)

Before anyone in NZ accept any restraints on building near the foreshore because of supposed rising sea levels, make sure your council has established whether rising tectonic plate movements are actually causing sea levels to fall in your neighbourhood.

And remind your councils that flooding is far more likely to descend from the hills behind than rise up from the seas in front.
