Good piece by John Armstrong in this morning’s NZ Herald (I can’t find an online link to the article yet.)
While he is critical of Dr Norman, Armstrong comments “How many times do we have to witness the NZ Govt bent double in fawning supplication to the Chinese authorities because a visiting dignitary from Beijing might have suffered a minor loss of face because a Tibetan flag might conceivably have fallen within his or her peripheral vision or hearing for a couple of nanoseconds”

Several days ago – to paraphrase Blackadder – I was introduced to a genuinely new experience, reading something unexpected from yee old Jew hater, Luc Hansen

And people need to remember that “peace activist” does not necessarily imply pacifism. Even Ghandi advocated violence when one’s back is against a wall.

I was intrigued by this and asked for links, and Luc later supplied one

This turned out to be a sad little YouTube video (then at 102 viewers), in which a young woman at a forum asks whether the Palestinians would be better off following the practice of Gandhi. One Norman Finklestein, who makes the claim that even Gandhi advocated violence in the service of resistance, shoots down her question. He supports this by explaining his understanding of Gandhi and does so in his usual repetitive, didactic manner:

Gandhi says, if you do not have it in you to act non-violently – and for him it’s a very high standard, for him to act non-violently means to be willing to go, as he puts it, smilingly and cheerfully into gunfire and allow yourself to be blown to bits, that’s, for him, what non-violence meant….

so he says a lot of people don’t have it in them and he says that if you don’t have it in you to meet that standard, and you are humiliated, abused by someone else, then he says you have a right to hit back and hit back hard, because for Gandhi there was nothing worse or more disreputable than cowardice.

If you read his writings the two things you keep reading are manliness and manhood, which he prized, and cowardice, which he loathed. And he says if you don’t have it in you to be non-violent, don’t go running away and using as a pretext that you’re non-violent. He says if you’re running away and using as a pretext that you’re non-violent. He says, if you’re running away, you’re running because you’re a coward.

That’s the real Gandhi, not the Hollywood Gandhi.

So I took a look at what Gandhi himself had written on the subject of using violence in the act of self-defence. Some of the relevant quotes are found in this link at mkgandhi.org.

Reading through those quotes in context, makes it quite clear that his arguments are a natural result of his philosophy of Satyagraha. In particular his argument that it goes beyond mere passive resistance (which it is usually held to be in the West). As he said in his famous 1920 letter The Doctrine of the Sword:

Forgiveness adorns a soldier. But abstinence is forgiveness only when there is the power to punish; it is meaningless when it pretends to proceed from a helpless creature. A mouse hardly forgives a cat when it allows itself to be torn to pieces by her.

He did not want people to think that non-violence simply meant sitting around waiting to be killed, or running away from a fight. He wanted it to be active; an act of courage through the willingness to be killed. Naturally enough he argued that this required the opposite of cowardice, and this also enabled him to argue against people who claimed that pacifists were cowards, by arguing that people who wish to kill and yet try to live themselves, are the real cowards.

It is this last thing that produces his repeated arguments about using violence in self-defence: Gandhi is effectively shrugging his shoulders and saying: well, if you are a coward, if you do not have the strength to stand up and die in the act of killing, if you have this weakness – then you may as well just go and be violent, even train yourself in the act of violence, for you cannot understand Satyagraha because it is the act of the strong, not the weak.

These arguments about courage and cowardice were Gandhi’s way of not only arguing back against those who thought pacifists were cowards, but also a way of persuading and needling people to be actively non-violent, to put themselves in harm’s way to defend the weak, but to do so non-violently.

It is most definitely not the same thing as advocating violence, even in self-defence. One example of how this false argument can be made is to use a famous Gandhi quote from the Sword letter above:

I would rather have India resort to arms in order to defend her honour than that she should, in a cowardly manner, become or remain a helpless witness to her own dishonour.

There are Finkelstein’s key themes: cowardice, honour, manliness. But in the full quote Gandhi makes his point quite clear:

I would rather have India resort to arms in order to defend her honour than that she should in a cowardly manner become or remain a helpless witness to her own dishonour. But I believe that non-violence is infinitely superior to violence, forgiveness is more manly than punishment.

and further on :

……..But I do not believe India to be helpless. I do not believe myself to be a helpless creature. Only I want to use India’s and my strength for a better purpose.

It was clearly his point in these quotes that he was refusing to accept that there were only two choices – cowardly running away or using violence. Once you had overcome cowardice and were willing to die (e.g demonstrating this willingness by using violence in a situation where you opened yourself up to be killed) you could, and should, move towards non-violence.

If there was any further doubt about his stand it was made utterly clear in his infamous letter describing what the Jews in Europe should do in response to the Nazi’s. There was no doubt even at that time that the Jews were a group that had been ….humiliated, abused…. and worse. But – contra Finklestein – Gandhi did not advise the Jews that they had …..a right to hit back and hit back hard. In fact he advised them that:

The calculated violence of Hitler may even result in a general massacre of the Jews by way of his first answer to the declaration of such hostilities. But if the Jewish mind could be prepared for voluntary suffering, even the massacre I have imaged could be turned into a day of thanksgiving and joy that Jehovah had wrought deliverance of the race even at the hands of the tyrant

You can disagree with Gandhi – and I do. You can even argue that he was a bit of hypocrite or downright weird – and I do. But this is about a reasonably prominent, Far-Left-Western intellectual inverting Gandhi’s argument to service his own ends of promoting Palestinian violence.

When it comes to Finklestein I don’t think hypocrisy or double standards are terms that can actually cover this.

Moral depravity seems the most accurate description – but that is a term I would reserve only for mendacious thinkers like Finkelstein – not for the mindless parrots who applaud him.

Letters from America, interesting reading.

Were I without family ties, I might consider expatriating to one of the quiet, out-of-the-way towns in Central- or South America that I drove my VW bus through in 1977-1978. Spending a year and a half living life at a slower pace and speaking in a second language was world view-opening for this California born American. Through it all, I met many wonderful, amazingly generous people. Unfortunately, I also saw a lot of grinding poverty and misery. I finally lost count of how many times I stared into the barrel of a loaded submachine gun held by an edgy 19 year-old soldier at some border crossing or roadblock.

My experience was life-changing, and made me appreciate the blessings of life in the United States – such as they were then. Thirty years later, I am not sure what I would feel coming home from such an adventure. I am saddened that governments at all levels have completely lost self-control. I am distressed that corporations now find it more profitable to pay off politicians for special subsidies and protections than to compete. I am depressed that Americans now walk away from commitments and belly up to the entitlement bar without any compunctions. We have spent the last forty years eating our seed corn and frittering away our wealth on trifles.

I am having great difficulty facing my young adult children with the news that their lives will be harder than mine has been…that college might have been a waste of time and money…that funding my granddaughter’s college savings fund may be an exercise in futility…that saving and deferred gratification were cruel jokes that a manipulated stock market, zero interest rates, and future inflation will render worthless.

My family is here, so I’m resigned to remaining here to see whatever fate delivers. I feel strongly that we’re close to the tipping point, after which collapse is inevitable. While a real, final dot.gov crash will make for very hard times, in the end it may be the only way to break the fever that is killing the country. Perhaps then we can dust off the Constitution and rebuild.

I enjoyed reading the “The Persistent Myth of American Economic Dominance” as I enjoy reading many of the articles here at The Daily Reckoning. Anyway, it was asked, in this article, for us to share our stories with you on “Getting out of Dodge.”

I went down to Chile in 2008 with the idea of just vacationing and learning Spanish. I found to my surprise that Chile is a great country and an economic power in its own way. It has low government debt, etc. Anyway, I found a job with a tech company making about 15% less than I was making in the US, but my money went so much further. I was able to buy a 2-bedroom 2-bath condo with all the amenities and 24/7 security for about $120,000 US dollars. There was also no income tax. Basically you just pay a 19% sales tax on everything. It was just so simple to live there. The government left you alone and expected you to work for what you got. They also have a privatized retirement plan where you pay 12.5% of your check to a company who manages your stock portfolio for you. Then you pay 7% for your private medical care comparable to US health care. It was nice to never have to fill out any tax forms and to keep roughly 80% of my paycheck every pay period.

My wife and I came back to the US after a few years there to give my wife, who is Chilean, the experience of living in the US. I think what I learned from my experience in Chile is there are lots of other countries who understand much better the importance of freedom and keeping government intrusion to a minimum if you want a healthy economy.

My wife and I recently expatriated. We are fortunate that although we were both born in the USA, due to accidents of birth, we hold passports of EU countries allowing us to live and work in the EU freely. Getting a foreign citizenship (and passport) is essential prior to expatriation; this is totally legal in the USA and you do not have to forfeit your US citizenship as a consequence. However, very few will be able to get a foreign passport so easily. The hard way is to live in a new host country for a long period of time and apply for citizenship. Some countries are rumored to sell passports, but this smacks of fraud and I’d be very suspicious of the utility of such a passport if push came to shove.

A better way is if your parents or grandparents were foreign born, to check out whether this could entitle you to a grant of citizenship. Germany for one, grants automatic citizenship to children of German nationals born abroad (until recently this only applied to German fathers, not mothers); this is the best way possible since your foreign citizenship is not something you have to apply for – you already have it and perhaps are just not aware of it. Ireland grants citizenship to grandchildren of Irish nationals regardless of where born, but genealogical proof is required. Expect these rights and programs to become more limited or even to vanish over the coming years, so your readers should investigate the opportunities as soon as possible and avail themselves quickly; there is no downside to having a foreign passport ‘at the ready’, and it makes international travel much easier even if you do not expatriate.

We thought long and hard about giving up our citizenships, but in the end we could fathom no logical reason for hanging on, other than blind inertia. As your article points out, the US government has made it very difficult on expatriates in many ways and it’s hard to justify blind loyalty when your own country treats you like a criminal.

The act of expatriation is disarmingly simple and quick, but best handled by an attorney in a foreign country who specialized in this. You have to be living overseas to do this, and you have to have a foreign passport otherwise you would become stateless, and as a result the embassy people won’t let you renounce your US citizenship.

If there were a poll on the issue I think eighty percent of Americans would want to stay put, while twenty percent would pack for an offshore destination.

I don’t think the issue is as clear-cut as staying in the US or leaving it. Staying or leaving is a shadow issue cut in half. Half the problem is that too many of those who would stay – regardless of how unlivable the US becomes – are confessing apathy and resignation to the rapacity of a government that considers itself too big to fail. The other half of the problem is that those who would choose to leave the US would be confessing to surrender of all hope for the US.

The only ones who seem to know where they want America to go are the Progressives, the Socialists, the statists, and the one-world control freaks, who, if floated head to toe, would form a gooey bridge from Brussels through Ivy League campuses to the White House and Congress.

The real issue is for Americans to realize that America has been hijacked by the most cynical and diabolical crowd ever assembled in Washington, DC. After that realization dawns, we must re-dream America. We must not settle for pretenders representing us in our nation’s top offices. We must re-claim, renew, and reorient America. That’s the issue.

I can only share a perspective of a small business owner. We are a manufacturing company with approximately 25 full time and 8 part time employees. We have been in business 26 years and my sons represent the third generation. I do not expect business to be easy and we don’t mind working hard. But I don’t understand this feeling that I get from the current administration that we are the enemy. I would repent if someone would tell me what I have done wrong. Hugh Smith Of Two Minds recently quipped that one would have to be insane or a masochist to hire an employee in America. I wonder how long we can remain insane enough to keep this up.

A few years ago I lost my job of 31 years at a mid-size bank, and, to carry me over to retirement, I took a job as a store cashier. It was my trip to the real world. I live and work in Cleveland and the clientele flowing through our store daily is enough to give one pause. A large number of customers are on the food stamp card. Or, as I prefer to call it, the Junk Food Card. The big game is for two people to live together – one with some income and the other drawing unemployment or welfare (or even both drawing welfare). It is very common for food card purchases to consist entirely of pop, candy, ice cream, etc. Then out comes the big wad of cash for the beer and cigarettes. With most of these people it seems very likely that they have no inclination to work at all, and gaming the system is how they wish to live.

Then there are the folks drawing disability. Most of them look quite healthy enough to be working – maybe not at a job they had been doing previously, but still capable of gainful employment. Many of our other customers are older people on fixed incomes. People who are working steady jobs are in the minority.

The problem here is obviously that the failure to maintain entitlement programs – which truly cannot continue to be funded given today’s local, state, and federal government deficits – will almost certainly result in anarchy. The thought of where Cleveland will be in a few years is absolutely frightening. Making things worse, the intelligencia has all fled the city, leaving opportunists to run the government. Every week the news reports are highlighting another local politician that is under investigation for fraud in office.

I don’t think I’ll be moving to a foreign country, but I’ll definitely be selling my house in Cleveland and moving to some small town somewhere that has all the amenities I require – with more favorable demographics. And I can understand that moving to a foreign country could be an even better alternative in the long run. So, basically, I’m all for “getting out of Dodge”!

I left the mortgage industry in 2003 and started a stone masonry business. My clientele are wealthy and still spending money. They are moving further out into the countryside and a few are building hardened shelters under their homes as well as installing generators with over capacity propane storage, chickens, gardens, trout ponds, orchards, and enough land to isolate and hide the operation from passersby. A one to one and a half hour ride to town is not out of the norm. They are not all retirees.

My employees, friends and family are involved part time (full time, 2nd shift) in food production. We pasture raise broiler hens, beef, pigs, and vegetables. Canning and dehydrating is back in vogue. We are preparing for the worst hoping for the best, raising children, and trying our best to stay in God’s grace.

I can see a common thread through all of those anecdotes. They all blame someone else, some form of higher government, then run away – even going so far as to build bunkers?! I won’t go so far as to call cowardice on them, I’ve run enough in my life to know about running, but sooner or later (good?) people have to stop and face what’s bugging them if they want change. It should be clear to anyone over 30 that social change doesn’t arrive with a presidential slogan, or new government, it won’t come with welfare or minority social policy. I think it arrives when one person voluntarily meets another, half way, and a start is made towards a mutual good.

Goff ‘not convinced’ Carter’s apology sincere

“I’m not sure yet that he understands why a genuine apology is needed and that taxpayers have the right to expect their money to be spent frugally and with reserve,” Mr Goff said this morning as he headed into the party’s weekly caucus meeting.

He said he accepted Mr Carter’s written apology issued last week was genuine.

“But he needs to believe what he says. I don’t know that yet.”

I’m “not convinced” Goff has any idea how he needs to deal with this. “I don’t know yet” whether Goff can move Labour forward decisively but it’s not looking promising.

“While defending his own policies President Obama has routinely been rude and sarcastic to his predecessor, George W. Bush. Yet Obama appears to be making the resident of the previous White House look like a genius compared to his own serious missteps in office.

Case in point – Interior Secretary Ken Salazar’s performance and the communication of priorities on the issue of oil rig safety in the Gulf of Mexico.

It seems incomprehensible that members of the administration still have jobs when it is now being reported that the federal government was appraised by BP on February 13 that the Deepwater Horizon oil rig was leaking oil and natural gas into the ocean floor. In fact, BP was fighting large cracks at the base of the well for roughly ten days in early February.

Further it seems the administration was also informed about this development, six weeks before to the rig’s fatal explosion when an engineer from the University of California, Berkeley, announced to the world a near miss of an explosion on the rig by stating, “They damn near blew up the rig.”

It’s also now being reported that BP was asking for the administration’s help on this matter long before the deadly accident and the now gushing well of tar, which leads to some questions:

1. It appears, Mr. President, that you were informed by BP about problems on Deepwater Horizon on February 13 and the company wanted your help. What did you say?
2. Given this new revelation, how can you can sleep at night knowing that your inaction cost the lives of eleven men in Louisiana?
3. Did you inform the victims’ families about these facts when you invited them to the White House for last month’s photo op?
4. You’ve said, time and again, that the buck stops with you. Doesn’t that statement seem like something bordering on propaganda when you follow it up with what appears to be a false sense of outrage by telling you’re looking for rear ends to kick?
5. When this news was breaking midday on Saturday about the latest BP developments that you and the Vice President were out on the golf course. Was it the 40th time you’ve played a round in 18 months? (Just for a point of reference President Bush played golf 24 times in eight years.)

But Mr. President, you seem to have very little leadership experience and it appears you have even less skill. Being a good dad and nice guy who sees the world as he wishes it to be is not exactly a resume of exacting leadership.

Your advisers have failed you and you have failed the American people on nearly everything we’ve asked of you.

Where you go from here is really your call, but you should consider two options if you genuinely love the country you work for and those of us you report to.

First, change your tactics. Second, appear to care. Attempt to engage and empower Americans who can and will go solve this mess. Otherwise resign.

For the good of the nation, change your patterns or change your path… but change!

Apparently too many old boys have been turning up pissed out of their skins in recent years and causing problems in the crowd, so the schools instigated breath testing at the gate to control this.

Mrs sister had her car ripped off the other week, no cops bothered coming out to our place, when the cops found it about 100km away, we went to pick it up, and had to clean marijuana, drug parephernalia, and lots of big knives out of it ourselves! Over 1000 people applied for 90 positions at the new Mount Maunganui McDonalds store, which opens on July 20.
Store owner John Warder was “amazed” at the calibre of the 1000 applicants.
“We’ve had a real mix of people,” says John.

This did not come as a big surprise though.
“It was a really, really good cross-section. In today’s market, we were expecting a big response.”
The 90 advertised jobs were for standard positions, but John says they were so impressed with the quality of job seekers, they identified six or seven trainee managers.

Viking2’s story illustrates how feeble the current government’s efforts to promote employment have been and are … we need more than cycleways … they without doubt can point to good increases in job availability but the story above illustrates how much more needs to be done if the country is to cope with the increase in GST come October and other austerity measures being introduced by foolish conventional thinking governments around the world. At least the British increase to 20% VAT[GST] is not on food. Not that that should be taken as a cry for changing the sensible and uniform NZ approach to GST.
