I see Labour have put up election billboards around. I thought that could only be done 28 days or something prior to the election?

They just say “You are in X electorate”, in the usual red colour with the Labour logo.

  Meanwhile over at the Standard, the are getting upset over a complaint to the Electoral Commission over a poster.
  
  Seems some Labour person thought it was smart to use Jacinda in the same stylised fashion as Obama and put the word “Aroha”on it. But no mention of it being an election poster. The only problem is we are less than 3 months to election day.
  
  So, Labour has been caught by their own rules, and now they are crying that the complainant is a party pooper. Message to the Labour party ,”tough” your rules, live with them and stop trying to fix the system to your advantage.

    The Aroha posters were a cunning campaign fundraiser. If you bought a poster then the price also included the purchase of a second poster that they would put up publicly. So the question is was this election fundraising . The artists are saying no that it doesn’t contain a Labour logo. I would say clearly yes and they should have to declare it and declare the amount which is an election donation. It’s also a bit spooky. Who wants giant pictures deifying a political leader plastered all over their street.

  However from Friday, the rules on election spending kick in, with the beginning of the three-month regulated period. Every cent spent from Friday onwards must be accounted for.

  It’s not the more cases that concern me, that was inevitable with people coming into the country. What concerns me is that it is apparent we can have no faith whatsoever in the Government’s quarantine and testing systems. Why don’t they test people at the airport as they go through customs? The people are already “captive”, in a line coming off the plane, just test them one after the other before sending them anywhere. That would be the most efficient (and therefore least obvious to the Government) way to do the first test. Then the first result would be back much sooner.

    The airports have been a joke from the outset. Despite all the well crafted speeches given by Jacinda, processes at the airport have almost non-existent. It was only Bridges getting the petition going during the lockdown that forced any action. And all that was taking people to hotels for 2 weeks.
    
    What we’ve had is PR, smoke and mirrors hiding the truth as to what has really been happening.

  I am still not sure why they can’t deliver 100% testing of new arrivals on time? I think there is a shortage of kits or test lab resource constraints they are lying about.
  
  Additional issue is the woeful capability of contact tracing to meet its own targets (4days ? 5 days?) that Ashley is glossing over and the sycophantic press are looking the otherway rather than holding him to the fire.

    I presume that there is a separate quarantine area at the airport – the most obvious thing.
    Then they should have prioritised testing facilities and a LABORATORY right at the airport to facilitate immediate test answers. I would have thought that was the most obvious and sensible thing to do.

  Indeed you can’t eat carbon credits, but then neither can you eat providing legal advice, mending shoes, driving a bus or many other ways in which people spend their days. What people do is, they turn these activities into money and then they use that money to obtain food, clothes, housing and other things that they need in life. That is generally how people are induced to provide goods and services that other people want.
  
  If planting pine forests does not similarly provide farmers with the means to make a living, preferably a better living than they could make by putting the land to other uses – then you may be very confident that unless they are remarkably stupid, something for which I have seen no evidence, they will not plant pine forests.

        It isn’t the farmers planting trees. It is rich overseas owners buying NZ farms and planting them for the carbon credits. Remember how the partners in the coalition weren’t going to have overseas buyers? They opted out of this promise if they were going to plant forests.

        to meet thresh hold the stand of trees needs to be planted at certain densities and also minimum width and acreage , I suspect that is to prevent farmers and councils claiming credits for hedges and shelter belts.

    The large foreign corporates pushing this are not interested in producing lumber. They get everything they value (carbon credits for a balance sheet) by planting and walking away. No siviculture, no thinning or pruning. Just turning productive land into non-productive, fundamentally working against NZ’s interests.

    This has been happening for many decades. I am an investor in a forest partnership in the Masterton area. It was established 40 years ago on a steep sheep station. Of course the station is gone, it is a 1000 hectare forest, now being harvested and also replanted. Carbon credits were claimed for the replanting.
    The only farms that will be being converted will be on steep country with high erosion potential. They will not be highly productive farmland.
    Anyway who has travelled in the back country will know that way too much steep back country was turned into farmland. Putting it back into forestry, both for harvesting and as permanent forest sinks makes sense to me.
    In short this is a bit of a beat up. Good farmland is not being converted.

        On my road in the Tararua, perfectly good rolling country has been planted in pines. Their first winter and they’ve already grown about 2 feet on the fertile land. My forest was planted on Bola-land back in ’91. It is half harvested, and replanted, and the rest when conditions return to normal – haha. So much for retirement planning.

      Wayne, we planted radiata out Tinui way in the early 80s on exactly the country you describe (when such land was purchased by us at $500 an acre…)
      
      It is very tough country to make a living from with even sheep and beef a very marginal proposition.
      
      Be aware though that with the market distortions now present via carbon credits etc we are seeing otherwise productive country turned over to forestry and there are quite genuine concerns being raised by the affected communities.
      
      I see it as very similar to the SMPs of days gone by – it was not an accident that we had 70 million sheep in NZ in the 1980s and with SMP removal those numbers have fallen to 27 million or so. I’m sure you’ll know well, if you incentivise something sufficiently people will flock to it where it wouldn’t ordinarily make sense to do so.

      some outfits down here now refuse to plant the really steep blocks as the way h&s is progressing theyll unlikely be able to harvest it upon maturity as manual felling/hauling will likely be banned by then.

      Yes it is, in many parts of NZ and worse still in pines , pines, pines. Monoculture forestry putting NZ at economic risk – just as we have finally “learnt” about the fickle business that tourism is we will be confonted with the outcome of putting all our eggs in one basket eventually. AND many of the pines planted will not be harvested. Better we were replanting native timber trees, matai, kauri, rimu,totara and so on and sustainably harvest.

  The worst part of it is that planting forests with the intention of cutting them down and replanting, does not reduce greenhouse gases. The wood has to go somewhere. If treated it can last a long time but will eventually decompose, releasing its CO2 back into the air. In the long term (which is apparently what we are supposed to be worried about), the only thing that reduces greenhouse gases is to leave fossil fuels in the ground. Everything else just creates a cycle. We’re harming our economy and reducing our food supply for no environmental benefit.

    The risk is there.NZ is now a nett importer of some foods.
    
    Trees have their place but it is not on good productive farmlands.
    Much of the new plantings are simply because farmers are being regulated off their land..
    Examples
    Water consents to use something that has always been part of the land, and without which there is no life
    landscape provisions so others don’t see the colour of your crops and sheds ,or the road to a hilltop
    The bullying and consenting costs of the RMA aided by regional councils enforcement teams has made Pastoral farming unsustainable for many.
    So pretty much their only option left is forestry, and that is best done by corporates who can handle the bullies.
    Don’t blame the farmers

    Just watching a YouTube video by Tim Pool regarding this. There was an official press release by the Republican Party which was interesting. They routinely cull fake applications for tickets and have put the blame on the declaration of emergency by the mayor due to threats of violence by protestors. (Who by their actions, could be argued are terrorists??). The entrances were reduced to one from three due to protest actions meaning some who would have turned up to attend were not able to enter. Add in Covid 19 fears and many that had signed up were not going to attend anyway. Apparently in the USA, both parties encourage as many to sign up to attend even if they’re not going to physically go.
    Tim notes that he counted around 2 million people watching the rally online via the various web channels, so it’s hard to exactly know what’s going on.

  Is a vaccine really viable? I don’t know, but corona viruses have proven very challenging in the past. The common cold is a corona virus (well multiple strains of corona virus) and there’s no vaccine yet.
  
  Given that history, we cannot have viable policies that are predicated on there being a vaccine. We must assume there will never be a vaccine. If we do one day get a vaccine then that is gravy.

    Wuhan has a population of 11 million and the whole of Hubei province has a population of 59 million.
    
    For a population of 11 million there are about 375 deaths a day. An order for 10,000 urns is therefore enough for less than a month of normal deaths.
    
    So woopie doo, at a time when the supply chain has been disrupted, they put in an order to cover 4 weeks. Sounds like just getting in a bit more stock to me.

Not a viable farming practice only good for any steep country the farm may afford

      The government has passed a law saying carbon credits will be priced at $25 dollars minimum, so whoever plants up land in pine trees is guaranteed an income.
      
      Once they’re planted up in pines, it will be near impossible to revert the land back into a farm.
      
      Surprisingly “Friends of farming” National signed up to this, even though it is going to cause the destruction of farming communities.
      
      Because it’s not just crappy hill country getting planted out, it’s also quality farming land.

        Brett – there’s significant concern within National as to the One Billion Trees policy. I am fronting a remit at a party divisional conference this weekend calling on an incoming National government to conduct an immediate review and cost-benefit analysis of OBT, for precisely the reasons you talk about. Planting marginal hill country land in pine is OK, but not prime pastoral farmland.
        
        Interestingly, National’s Wairarapa candidate Mike Butterick is a staunch opponent of OBT, and was one of the early spokesmen for 50shadesofgreen, a group of mainly rural people set up to oppose OBT. There have been multiple farm sales in Wairarapa. Questions also need to be asked as to why Labour, when it changed the Overseas Investment Act, it left an exemption in place to enable overseas purchasers to be land as long as it is planted in trees.

    It’s OK to harvest them if you don’t burn the wood. If you leave them to decay the carbon goes back into the environment.
    
    The best idea would be to turn the wood into building materials that will stick around for many, many years.

Apart from the human tragedy, would there be compensation claims if sudden preventable deaths become linked to a traceable negligent border breach?

Have the Treaty implications been considered beyond those of unemployment and other cover-19 complications so far addressed by the Budget and other measures?

While Māori Party co-leader John Tamihere calls Pākehā ‘asymptomatic racists’, terminology which is so very fucking covid-19 trendy – but at the same time ignorant: because if “‘asymptomatic ” (showing no signs), how does he detect our supposed racism? – he misses the point that, as yet, Maori have almost totally escaped this pandemic, contrary to very negative health predictions, and only a vast resurgence should qualify them for a quarter of all state funding.

(And why does the Maori Party, releasing its flagship ‘Whanau First’ policy to do away with Māori inequality, demand a quarter (25%) of all government spending go on Māori projects, when their population share is 16.5%)

John Tamihere has so far “jumped the shark”?
And who can explain why cover-19 has not so far hit Maori and Pacifica as predicted?

Covid testing. Have a shocking cough and headcold so went to the drive through at Henderson yesterday lunchtime (nothing on the Shore) Got a text befor 8 this morning – Negative. So yes, they are on the ball.

At the start of this there was no testing at the airport, just leaflets. Test kits were in short supply although Bloomfield said they weren’t (lie) So the testing started at the airport, but as soon as the reporters and cameras left it was back to handing out leaflets. The rubbish bins were full of them. My neighbour works for Air NZ.

  I think community testing organised by primary health care centres in the city suburbs is fine. For now as long as they get access to kits and a speedy response from the labs. Anything centrally organised by the government seems to suffer from lack of basic delivery. No idea how rural testing is going.

Garner and Richaddson were winding themselves up for Jacinda this morning. Early on, it was only Ruby lips who was left defending her “syncopantic” colleagues in the media, who both Garner and Richardson accused of lapping up everything they were told by Jacinda.

Garner now has it in for David Clark, and the longer Jacinda keeps him in his job, the more Jacinda is becoming Garner’s lightening rod for attacking her the government. This keeps up Clark will get pushed, but it is now almost too late.

while I understand we need to enable it to work but its utter bullshit to update my device without my consent.

The Standard is good reading for a laugh this morning. Our opposites in their echo chamber are still trying to reassure themselves and peddle the myth, that Woodhouse is to blame for the latest cases and endangering public health.

To believe and peddle such a myth you have to be incredibly dumb or insincere or both.

Their argument was that Woodhouse got the information, withheld it from the authorities for a “gotcha” moment in the house last week.

What the clowns at the Standard fail to realise is that:
1. Woodhouse got his information from a leak from within the MoH.
2. Bloomfield & co were privy to the same information, but chose to withhold or spin a different version of evdnts;
3. Before Woodhouse “went public” he had to check his facts and working with the National team, confirm how the information was released.

How could Woodhouse endangered public health releasing information that the MoH already had and should have been acting upon?

Would any action have been taken had Woodhouse politely spoken to Bloomfield and co about a case the department already knew about?

How has Woodhouse endangered public health by embarrassing Jacinda, Clark and Bloomfield of their failings to put in place systems that have endangered the health of New Zealanders?

For the record Woodhouse is an opposition MP, he has control over nothing. Jacinda and Clark assured New Zealanders that they were putting in place systems to ensure returning Kiwis were properly isolated, tested and quarantined. The systems they put in place failed. So, were the measures put in placed always doomed to fail? Or did they just lie?

So, to those in the echo chamber of the Standard, it your Prime Minister, your Minister of Health and Ashley Bloomfield who have endangered the public health of New Zealanders, not Michael Woodhouse who scored the ultimate gotcha on a bunch of abject failures and liars.

I am curious to know about the 10s of thousands of people pouring into the country. They can’t all be tourists caught out abroad. I suspect most of them are actually long term expatriots who have decided to come home because they mistakenly heard we were covid free. Why is the tax payer having to pay for them to be put up in hotels for two weeks? What will they do for work when we have a huge and growing unemployment problem? Will they therefore go on the dole thus increasing the country’s burden? Why are airlines providing flights for them? Shouldn’t we have had a cut off date for returnees? Lots of questions, no answers.

  It does not matter why they are returning home. If a New Zealand citizen manages to get themselves back to New Zealand, they cannot be refused entry. The airlines are providing flights because they are in the business of flying people. The only responsibility of the airlines is to refuse boarding to any passenger who does not have authorisation to enter New Zealand. (And they are fined if they fail to do so.). However, by definition, all New Zealand citizens can enter New Zealand, so of course the airlines will provide flights if they are profitable.

  No tourists are entering the country, unless they are NZ citizens or permanent residents, which probably doesn’t qualify as ‘tourists’.
  The tax payer is paying because the managed isolation is mandated by the government.
  It’s not a prerequisite it have a job to return home.
  You can get the unemployment benefit if you normally live here and have been a citizen or PR for two years.
  If you buy a ticket the airline would love to fly you here.
  No. If you’re a Kiwi this is your home. Besides you might not have a visa for anywhere else.

It seems the hotels in Auckland appropriate to house the people in managed isolation have reached capacity and some people are being bussed down to Rotorua.
One would imagine there are some hotels down there that are quite pleased about that because occupancy rates are rock bottom.

    The people “flooding our borders” are citizens and permanent residents. Citizens can never be refused entry to New Zealand. (The same principle applies in every country, or at least functional countries.) Technically, New Zealand could refuse entry to permanent residents. However, that would require an amendment to the Immigration Act. It would also cause considerable hardship by separating families. (Many New Zealand citizens are married to New Zealand Permanent Residents.)

  Friends of ours arrived exhausted after 26hrs of travel. They were loaded onto a bus at Auckland airport thinking they’d be going to the city. After leaving the airport they were told the bus would be traveling 3.5hrs non-stop to Rotorua. There were no toilet facilities on the bus.

Peter Williams is saying on Magic Talk that at least three new COVID cases will be announced this afternoon; at the Novotel Auckland Airport, the Grand Millennium in Auckland, and a case from Rotorua.

The Novotel case came to light last night, courtesy of a journalist quarantined there, but the other cases suggest that the MoH and the Government are struggling to keep a lid on things, and that disgruntled people in quarantine who feel let down by “the system” are going straight to the media. If nothing else, it’s keeping the pressure on the Government, after all last week’s blunders.

Now a police officer is dead, his family are unhappy about being quarantined because it’s disrupting their grief and the funeral.

  Calling for opening of the borders does not necessarily invite incompetence, lack of foresight and lack of accountability.
  
  It is astounding that the government cannot identify the thresholds that must be achieved before the next level is achieved. This has been a consistent theme from day 1.
  
  The conclusion that they don’t know and are still trying to work it out is inescapable.

What is a citizen? We are increasingly giving tax payer support to “NZ citizens” who may not have been living in our country for many years. For example Ozzie kicking out NZ criminals who have lived in OZ all their lives, people who went to OZ or USA for high income, then lose their job and come home to state support. As well as the quarantining debacle and expense. Should Ex pat NZers be required to file a nz tax return each year, if they intend to access NZ services again in times of health, unemployment, or retirement.

  I am an NZ citizen. I lived in Thailand off and on for 25 years. More on than off.
  I paid tax every year on what little income I made from renting my house when I was abroad.
  American citizens have to file a tax return annually even if they have no income and I believe it’s not a straightforward process. On the other hand their pension is paid out wherever they are; same with Brits.

  If you are resident offshore you can’t fly in just to get a new hip or something.

    Someone who chooses to live and make their life overseas does not deserve the benefits that others have earned, in my opinion.

    What’s so special about emergency treatment? You are either a citizen plugged into the health system or you aren’t.
    
    If you are an NZ tax resident then you are liable for NZ income tax on world-wide income (with credit for payments on said income paid elsewhere). If you are not an NZ tax resident (out of the country for 12 months) then not. Paying NZ tax on your NZ rental does not make you an NZ tax resident.
    
    If you aren’t an NZ tax resident ….. gets a bit vague. Come “home” (for a “visit”) …. get diagnosed with something bad …. is this our problem?

Given how lax the quarantine protocol has been, you would think there are already coronavirus cases circulating in the community but they have not been picked up because so many of them have been turned away when trying to get tested. Someone should ask Ardern for a cast iron guarantee that this is no cases in the community!!

They have done very well so far, with the aid of wildly inaccurate predictions made by a bunch of mathematical modellers who have never diagnosed or treated a patient in their lives, they have succeeded in putting much of the world under house arrest, closing down the global economy, shutting schools, exterminating vast numbers of older folk, sentencing millions of untreated patients to death and more. There was never any reason for any of it, of course. We knew that and they knew it too. The virus which was the subject of all this legalised mayhem was never more dangerous than the ordinary flu. The number of people killed by the prescribed treatment, the lockdowns and the social distancing, will, far, far exceed the number killed by the coronavirus.

Bainimarama’s plan for “bubble” holidays in Fiji for Australians and New Zealanders:

Upon arrival, travellers would have to spend 14 days in Fiji government quarantine facilities and then be required to pass a Covid-19 test to enter the general public.

This would be at their own cost or that of their respective government.

Perhaps they would have to go back into quarantine on their return to Australia or NZ.

The mother of all Maori “land” claims, or Maui’s biggest fishing story yet ….

The Maori-dominated New Zealand Geographic Board, has sought and obtained a Maori name for the submerged continent of Zealandia, of which New Zealand is an unsubmerged part.

In 2018, after hints from the Geographic Board, GNS Science asked Auckland university lecturer Manuka Henare to come up with a Maori name. Henare had found Maori names for three New Zealand naval vessels – e Kaha, Te Maru and Te Mana.

The name he came up with for Zealandia is Te Riu-a-Maui, which means “the hills, valleys and plains of Maui.”

The GNS Science web site notes “the convention with dual names is that the Maori name comes first e.g. Aotearoa/New Zealand, Aoraki/Mt Cook.”

No problem with dual names, in Maori and English respectively, with the Maori name for use in the Maori language, and the English name for use when the language is English.

“A new Health Order will make it explicit that arriving Kiwis need to return a negative Covid-19 test before leaving isolation or quarantine after 14 days. Those that refuse can be held for up to a month.

It also refreshed the ban on cruise ships and tightened up the rules for crews on foreign ships, effectively ending much of shore leave.”

Jesus wept: it only took this so-called “government” to now put these rules into place.
At least 3 months after the start of the crap !

  I had to laugh watching the news tonight. NZ Post are building a new facility for processing and the reason given was because of the problems they had coming out of lockdown. The only reason for these issues were because the government demanded couriers do not deliver anything other than what they deemed essential. Then the biggest problem was NZ Post did no preparation for having to deliver and sort those parcels when lockdown lifted.

  The crews of overseas vessels are treated v badly. There are now MAJOR mental health problems with people trapped on ships and some whose contracts are ended but are still on the vessel and arent getting paid.
  
  UK Maritime Safety people are now on Pax vessels anchored off the UK investigating the mental health problems. Many ports especially US domt let crews ashore FULL STOP and these poor buggers are basically in prison. They get paid bugger all and are treated like shit.
  
  I was at sea when it was still a good job now it is very poor.

    I have been following this story, much respect for them sending a boat to get their crew
    
    Morale is high aboard the San Aspiring in the Southern Ocean after 15 kiwi fishermen learnt their retrieval boat is halfway to collect them.
    
    The vessel is located off the Falkland Islands, off the coast of South America, fishing for toothfish, and many of the men have been at sea for more than 140 days because of Covid-19.

well the shootout in auckland that resulted in the loss of an officer involved a dozen or more shots.
o dear did he have time to reload or did the shooter have a firearm that cindy and nash claim were successfull in ban/buying back? (%27 is not successful btw)

Would explain the only detail on firearm as a long barrel rifle. will be interesting once they release more details.

  My 22 rifle held 15 bullets in a long tube under the barrel. There was a bullet shaped hole at the end in which you placed bullets one by one and listened to them slide into the tube. It took about a minute to reload. You could shoot 15 shots a minute.
  
  Because the rifle held more than ten bullets it was outlawed and the government paid $750 to buy it.
  
  The replacement 22 rifle holds only ten bullets in a magazine but you can replace the empty magazine in a couple of seconds with a fresh one holding another ten bullets. With this new “legal” rifle you can now shoot 40 shots per minute.

  Two bob, wouldn’t your comment indicate we are on the right track in getting rid of semi autos, which can transform any drugged up half wit with scant idea of how to shoot into a murderer or even a mass murderer. I would say these things are hardly essential for the functioning of society and their effect is like that of nuclear waste, remaining deadly to human life for for years after their original purpose has expired.
