    Everything is about spin, appearance and theatre.
    
    So we had pretend quarantine? So what? At the time the sheep felt better about it.
    
    Unfortunately there are always consequences.
    
    They are now here. Closing the borders and locking people up is the modus operandi of a police state. Deploying troops to ensure we stay locked down is merely step 2. Next it will be revealed that there are wreckers and haters amongst us, and the military will be needed to keep order…
    
    We will learn to love the Cadaverous Dear Leader, who loves us so much and has sacrificed so much for us….
    
    Or alternatively we could wake up, grow up and recognise that there is no cure for a coronovirus, and we will have to live with it and achieve herd immunity.
    
    The only solution is to protect the vulnerable, and to be a bit careful. wash hands etc.
    
    Imprisoning the well – or at least those who aren’t connected, or don’t care – is a failed experiment, and no amount of pink haired loons lecturing at us is going to make a virus go away, or bring back jobs.

  Some people have a passive/aggressive personality.
  All questioning needs to be on their terms.
  You get one shot.
  If the question meets the requirements, it is acceptable – smiles and nods all round – and this leads to a kind response next time.
  If the questions are too challenging, you won’t get many other opportunities to ask again another time and the aggressive trait is on full display.

  In every event there is always a tipping point. A point where enough supporters turn on the Leader and their Party and say enough is enough we dont trust you you have lied to us.

        Now tell me, Swifty, which one of those esteemed personages was / could ever have been, considered venerable, lovable, and / or adorable? I put it to you, not a one of them.
        
        Alright, I’ll be kind: had he had the chance, Don might have begun to approach a certain “adorableness”, in women’s eyes only (primarily because of his gentlemanly awkwardness), and yes, for some reason that entirely escapes me, “that nice Mr Key” seemed to hit it off with some women, too.
        
        The simple fact is, it is almost impossible to be a right-wing politician, and be venerable, lovable, or adorable. Why? Because that is simply not how they “hang”; they don’t have the common touch. Generally, they come across as unlovable and unadorable, and therefore unvenerable.
        
        How many of National’s leaders will be remembered the way Savage, Kirk, Lange and Adern are / will be? Answer: none.
        
        Why is it a bad thing that some Labour leaders have engendered emotions approaching veneration, love, and adoration? Are you suggesting that “the sheeple” (as some KBers like to describe the People) are simple, unintelligent, easily led, despite the fact that, come October 2020, National will have been in government for 47 of the last 71 years?

        I’m sorry, but I’m not in a position tonight to pen a considered response, but maybe at some future time.
        
        I’ll make a very quick point though – you seem to imply that leaders are venerated by some people because of their adorableness, among other things, or because of how they make some people feel.
        
        You are making a mistake if you think that applies to me.
        
        I judge people who are in positions of responsibility on their results. Almost exclusively on their results. My ‘feelings’ generally don’t come in to it.
        
        This is why I fail to understand Jacindamania. Nor have respect for Jacindamaniacs. This is because I ask what has she actually achieved?
        
        Pre-COVID great swathes of important indicators of NZ’s wellbeing were going backwards. Post the COVID response that she, and the Labour Party, has engineered we will see our wellbeing indicators march backwards at a rate that the signs are will be breathtaking.
        
        Also, I am not someone to venerate anybody. I can have tremendous respect for someone – for what they have accomplished, for what they have achieved. But, I’m sorry, I look for far, far more from those who lord over us than simply making me ‘feel good’.
        
        Be sure, mark you, that I fully understand many NZers do not think (feel) similarly.

        And, Durden, wasn’t that one of the most disgraceful displays of mass-hysteria and deceit ever perpetuated by the Labour and Green parties on a gullible NZ public that we’ve ever witnessed? Capably supported by the unions and other lefty-allies and which demonstrated that they are entirely without principle.
        
        The TPPA was supposedly going to bring about the end of civilisation as we know it, we would ‘lose our sovereignty’, we would be ordered about at the whim of overseas corporates and our entire livelihoods imperiled. National was ‘selling us out’ and of course “Aotearoa is not for sale!’
        
        Massive public marches, hikoi, demonstrations, flooded social media, public meetings etc then ensued.
        
        But what then happened after the 2017 election? Labour changed a couple of minor clauses, as you say slapped a new title on it and passed it otherwise unchanged.
        
        And what did we then hear from Labour and the Green’s allies? “Well done Jacinda and the team for passing this wonderful trade agreement!!”
        
        Those of us who followed this issue unfold could do nothing but stare open-mouthed at the naked hypocrisy and deceit that we had just witnessed – and marvel at the credulousness of our fellow citizens.
        
        Honestly in decades to come there will be Labour, union and Green people still dining out on the TPPA story – how National did all the work, copped all the (Labour and union-initiated) flak and abuse and then Labour just sailed in at the last minute, passed an almost identical agreement and received all the plaudits – while being lauded by their supporters as having saved NZ from National.
        
        They will be heaving with laughter at how many dupes they have supporting them in New Zealand.
        
        And what makes this all doubly-two-faced from Labour? They have happily signed us up to HUNDREDS of international agreements over the decades. Ever hear a peep from their supporters about the loss of sovereignty that they involve?
        
        The whole thing was a totally manufactured political beat-up by Labour and the unions from start to finish.

  I have heard Ms Ardern two or three times already claim that members of the opposition put pressure on by begging for people to be exempted for travel round the country and overseas, go to funerals, visit sick relatives, have parties etc.
  And because she and her government are so kind, they had to give in to these demands.
  National and ACT has made everything so much more difficult, you see?
  By the way, what happened about that pandemic Committee Mr Bridges chaired?
  Any report back, recommendations, conclusions?
  Or has that all been binned, just like Bridges?

        Yes, there are plenty of issues with quarantine aside from compassionate leave. Nobody is tested at any stage unless they self report symptoms, and intermingling with new arrivals into quarantine is possible.

New Zealand detected no cases of COVID 19 crossing its borders for 23 days from among the nearly two thousand international arrivals each week until two women were granted compassionate leave to depart quarantine early to drive to Wellington to comfort a family member. In Wellington they tested positive for COVID 19. At the same time Australia has reported it has detected a dozen or more cases of infection crossing its border over the same period. Surely St Jacinda’s protecting powers are truly divine? Or are we being spoon fed bullshit by incompetents?

    A fair percentage think that the whole pandemic thing has been over-egged.
    The Government can impose anything it likes, but if the people don’t believe, it’s all a waste of time.
    I think people realise that, yes, if you are frail in health (for whatever reason) you may very well succumb – just as you might in any regular influenza season. Healthy people may feel very ill for a few days – as they do with real ‘flu, but will recover.

  Can’t imagine the border control processes NOT having let in the virus. There are cases out there have simply not been tested and confirmed so far.
  
  The crappy contact tracing system given the acceptable “tick” by the Labour list candidate Ayesha “Quid pro quo” Verral will be under stress right now trying to follow-up 320 potential contacts in the trail left behind by just the two woman.
  
  And god alone knows how many unidentified cases exist from mistakes like the exceptions for Christchurch Tangi and Hamilton Tangi and whoever this person from the US was who met over 40 people the day after arrival.
  
  Because all actors involved are lying or obfuscating.
  
  Our media are just useless pussies – no digging and no asking hard questions. Maybe some citizen activism is required. Just common people with phone cameras hanging around areas near quarantine hotels and local pubs etc.

The simple fact is this whole administration failed, and worse still, they all stood on that podium, doing their “little dance“, made Trump-like misleading statements to the public that were fringing on lies. Ardern failed on housing, failed on child poverty and now failed on implementing her own rules. Basically, an abject failure after three years in government. All she has to write home about is more debt and joblessness. Let’s all pray this latest balls up of hers doesn’t lead to another 3.9 lockdown, more job losses and another $50bn in debt.

  They keep on toting lines like “I don’t personally do the test” as their defense, yet they would gladly hold the CEO and directors of an organisation to account for the actions of their staff. Does this imply the CoL knows its too incompetent to implement its own policies and guidelines?

More importantly and scary is why is jacindas 1st option when things dont go her way is to use iron fist/intimidation/crackdown approach?

    I agree wholeheartedly (and I’m ex military). If the MoH and Police can’t manage this themselves it’s a pretty sad state of affairs. I’m not disagreeing the military along with any number of specialised organisations/businesses shouldn’t consult and assist to develop a robust system but the act of implementing and managing the controls shouldn’t be the responsibility of the military, we’re at Level 1 for gods sake, not war footing or disaster response. Just gives them someone else to blame when things go to shit.

  Two bob: the irony is that the Labour govt are now counting on the NZ Army to divert attention away from the total ineptitude of Jacinda’s pet/family friend ex-Police commissioner Mike Bush – who once again is at the epicentre of this latest Covid-19 stuff up (along with more and more being revealed by the hour). He was responsible for managing the quarantining of these arrivals to our country, and the exposure of more and more cock-ups show the lazy prick has been totally MIA.
  
  Well why should we be surprised? His toxic character mix of ignorance and arrogance ensured his track record as top-cop was totally abysmal. The Christchurch mass killer obtained his guns thanks to the slackness of Bush and his team failing to follow their own pre-existing checks and rules. But he’s still spinning bullshit to cover that up, and led the charge to divert blame from himself (and sucking up to his pay-master) by confiscating 1000’s of guns from law abiding NZ citizens.
  
  But probably his ugliest performance was his extraordinary public interference (above and beyond) to shut down talk of Jacinda’s current squeeze’s [Deleted – Mod.] hobbies. That reeked to high heaven…even more so when Cindy rewarded him with a Companion NZ Order of Merit gong!
  
  But the Bushmaster is still lying and waffling and obfuscating his way through his latest cock-up, and the question must be asked: is he just incompetent and totally lazy and useless, or is he corrupt? Jacinda is apparently too weak and/or compromised to sack him (or anybody else for that matter). We need a commission of inquiry into his performance over the last 3 years, he has been in centre of too many muck ups for it all to have been a coincidence.

  It’s interesting that some in the “left-wing media” are attempting to denigrate Michael Woodhouse for not informing the MoH first (before he made his “allegations” in Parliament yesterday).
  
  (I just heard Jane Patterson on Morning Report refer to this a few moments ago).
  
  But as I reckon, as you confirm with your statement “The Health officials didn’t believe this meeting was worth reporting, when saying they went straight to Wellington” that even if Michael Woodhouse DID inform the MoH first … that they wouldn’t have believed him (and Bloomfield would have denied it).
  
  So Michael Woodhouse did the right thing.
  
  Interestingly TV3’s The Project interviewed Michael Woodhouse last night (I decided to watch to see what angle they would take). Well it was quite a sight to behold – the Project’s hosts conducted themselves (i.e. their questioning) rather well but you should have seen the glare in their eyes when they were looking at Woodhouse – it looked like to me that the hosts were pissed off that someone had dared to upset the PM’s halo! It sure was a sight to behold if anyone can be bothered looking for the clip!
  
  Regardless Michael Woodhouse conducted the interview well and batted away their questions, well done that man!

Oh what a difference a day makes.
Yesterday morning there was talk about two ladies driving non stop Auckland to Wellington let out early from quarantine.
I believe there are just 15 personell in place to put this information together so Jacinda can put it out to the world and make it look at good as possible.
“Hard to make a silk purse out of a sows ear.”
By question time, the ladies were kissing other people on the way and had 300 contacts.
By last night there were a flood of people that were known to have broken quarantine, most known to the authorities but not reported to the public.
Bloomfield went from darling to looking like a guy promoted way beyond his station, totally out of his depth.
A person flys into Aucklasnd from the US and goes and mixes with 40 people the next day.
Kids run away from the police and one cannot be found, the other decides how they will finish their quarantine.
Prediction, there will many many more as none of the government departments really have a handle on this at all.
The fish rots from the head, it must have had several heads.
Jacinda’s gaggle of information experts are going to have to work overtime to supress their way out of this, the journalists in NZ in general should hang their heads in shame, they have been compliant through this whole episode.
I don’t hold my breath that anything will change.

A (Maori) Health Authority could be quite useful if it is based on the social investment approach with a dose of personal responsibility on top. Develop a risk profile, add these folk to a database, keep track of their appointments and other factors and implement rewards and sanctions.

There is a working model already – the Young Parent Payment scheme where teen parents get more money if they meet their obligations and more ‘support’ if they don’t.

Different rewards and sanctions obviously, but for example race based elective surgery priority could be amended, or additional support could be funded..

And much better for an Authority not to be based on ethnicity.

The social investment approach under the last government was to identify school pupils at risk, targeting support rather than scattergun $$ based on decile. How about it National?

  Unless they’re going full apartheid mode, the Maori Health Authority people will not have any assets to direct. If they don’t own hospitals and have budgets for buying equipment then it is hard to see how they will function properly.
  
  If, as is likely, they end up with a say in how the Pakeha hospitals are run then that will mean two health authorities trying to direct one hospital. That’s going to be a disaster.

The Guardian (UK) says the two covid-19 infected women, who travelled Auckland to Wellington, worked with health authorities on a “safety plan” before departing.

Where is any enterprising journalist to ask what was actually in that plan with apparently no “comfort stops”?

But any question will be shut-down with “that is private, operational level information, which we refuse to discuss” – despite the operational level issue could have effected every person in the country – perhaps via infection (maybe life or death for some) or via the economic consequences of another lockdown.

And was a crash scenario – with both women perhaps unconscious – considered?

Something like this was always going to happen, only the details were unsure.

All that power, all the ego-rub of being in the media and on TV etc, of coarse the luvvies didn’t want that all to go away.

The borders have been extremely porous through the whole exercise. There have been huge violations by gangs. People in quarantine have just fled or, no doubt, wagged off for a day or a night on the tiles.

It was just a matter of which one they chose to publicise to re-awaken the fear. Bureaucrats love this stuff.

We never returned to normal and we probably won’t for a long time. There are many silly little rules and inconveniences that achieve nothing except theatre.

Fear makes people submissive and compliant. It also makes the “success” seem more successful.

  IIRC Ms Ghahraman only came into the Parliament because of the Special Votes.
  
  Here’s the thing – the Greens only received 8.4% of the Special Votes and the Greens gained an extra seat (GG).
  
  OTOH National received 36.3% of the Special Votes but actually lost a seat as a result!
  
  (Because National obtained a high party vote and also won most of the electorate seats hence the MMP system “reduced” National’s party seats in order to maintain “proportionality”).
  
  So who would have thought that Golriz Ghahraman would become the “poster-girl” of why MMP can be a flawed voting system – oh how ironic!

Very recently, in the Himalayas, Chinese troops fought Indian troops.

20 Indians including a senior officer and an unknown number of Chinese were killed.

The clash is, or should be, of interest to the world because both parties are nuclear armed, have massive armed forces and both countries are trying to make themselves important in the world.

News of this clash is buried deep inside NZ news sites behind such things as Prince Andrew’s emails ‘prove’ cooperation and pro-Cindy crap from some pink-headed harridan.

As an aside, the fighting that killed the soldiers was actual fighting, without firearms but with staves, fists etc.

Note his raising of the ‘race pay gap’ in which he insinuates but is careful not to explicitly state is wholly due to whites discriminating against non-whites (I’m sorry, I refuse to use the euphemism POC).

A small point to note – if as he states ‘whites’ earn more on average than Asians in NZ then I would go as far to say that we would be alone in that throughout the world.

If you put average ‘white’ NZ earnings (personal or household) up against average Chinese or Japenese or Korean NZ earnings I GUARANTEE the latter will show as being higher.

This will come as no surprise to most here – given the importance those cultures place on education, entrepreneurship, independence, thrift and self-reliance (how many times have we seen whole Chinese families, for example, working together in a business – and how many times have you seen whole Chinese families queuing outside a WINZ office?)

I went to the Treasury site to look up the numbers but couldn’t find any relevant analysis. I did find this though, which conveniently only compares Whites versus Maori and PI, ‘Asians’ not even mentioned:

So I would like to know where McConnell gets his information from that says “Asians are paid 11% less than anyone else.” I think when he says ‘anyone else’ he means ‘whites’ otherwise his statement is nonsensical.

I have no evidence to support this view but I do wonder if let’s say for example, he has seen some pay data which includes under a broad ‘Asian’ category 50,000 or 100,000 Indian students who are also working on low wages pumping gas or working in a liquor shop then of course that would massively skew the ‘Asian-income’ findings.

I remain absolutely convinced that if any ‘race pay gap’ exists in New Zealand it will be entirely due to personal choices made by the people surveyed and throughout their lives.

To suggest or imply that it is due to some racism or systematic discrimination in our society is not only an unsupported assertion it is a disgrace and should be condemned.

  Hardly. Todd’s response to Grant wasn’t nearly as effective, or as amusing, as the Minister’s.

  Wouldn’t it be fun watching Winston this afternoon answering on behalf of the prime minister? A golden opportunity for Todd to personally make the government squirm will likely go begging, because he, like Jacinda, has likely decided that, being a Thursday, he, too, will be elsewhere.

I remember when

Watched an interesting interview on “Breakfast” this morning.
They interviewed Jess Moloney, CEO/Founder of Moloney Moloney, on the use of Social Media as a tool for use during Elections.
She said that 75% of the population tune in to social media for at least 2 hours a day.
When Jacinda was elected leader of the Labour Party there was a corresponding rise in both her and the party’s popularity.
This rise has not occurred with the change of leadership in the National Party.
This does not predict a great future for the old white male type leader, or even experienced older politicians of either sex.

Some foreign sounding guy calling himself ‘CJ’, and claiming to be a NZ’er quarantined at the Ellerslie Novotel, just called Kerry Woodham to complain about the treatment he’s been getting from the staff there. (We actually heard him talking with Ryan Bridge at dinner-time last night as well.)
As my partner said, if what he has to say gets back to the hotel kitchen, he’ll have a lot more to worry about than just getting a dose of Covid.

        I spent a few hours on Disappointment Island back in 1980… the first botanist to go there since the 1907 expedition.
        
        I hadn’t been warned that the place is full of blow-holes…. which you can’t see as the edges are surrounded by tall tussock grass and large-leaved plants….
        As I didn’t fancy a fall into the southern ocean… I literally crawled my way around a few square metres and couldn’t wait for the zodiac to come and take me off the place.

How does student know nigger is derogatory ?Is it to be removed from dictionaries. Should the N be removed altogether and just dots nod nod wink wink be used?   And the word nigger is also apparently okay when it’s used in movie dialogue, as in Django Unchained where it’s tossed around like confetti.

Does the lack of proper procedure at the border reflect the failure of both the media and social media?
The media’s job is to draw attention to the problems and failures of Government policies and their implementation. They failed to do this, instead, they were content to pick the low fruit at the media briefings.
Worse than that they, with the assistance of social media, constantly criticised Simon Bridges when he did his job of holding the Government task.
As a result of their lacklustre conduct, stories about failures of isolation procedures and border control were either overlooked or not detected.
Instead fluff pieces on Jacinda’s popularity at home and abroad filled columns intended for news.
Attention to the problems and failures would have increased our safety and meant that stories now emerging would have been sorted long before now.

The biggest issue for me is one of Labour being incompetent at the business of Government as a whole.
By this I mean that the role of Government is to look beyond the immediate and, because it has the resources that no other organisation has, to look at the future pathway options and do the scenario planning that provides blueprints for action when unlikely events do happen.
To my mind, the ball was dropped back in February or March (at the latest) when the prospect of widespread pandemic was imminent. That was the time when the planning teams for phases II, III, IV and V of handling the disease control should have been worked on.
If we can prepare plans for Auckland being wiped out by a volcano, we should have had effective border control, quarantine, re-opening procedure, compassionate, diplomat, new infection, visiting yachts, shipping, freight planes, charters, school re-opening etc etc plans developed and tested in advance of their implementation. Personnel assigned, legislated authorities put in place, roles of police, military,Immigration, other Ministries clearly defined, cross-functional teams developed (in isolation if necessary) and so on.
This was a make-it-up-as-you-go-along process and has been called out as such consistently over the past 4 months.
It has been denied and glossed over but has been proven to be true by a catastrophic series of blunders and cover-ups. Think PPE, butchers, The Warehouse, testing capacity, quarantine, David Clark, Trevor Mallard, the Cindy and Ashley Show, farcical press conferences, absconding isolation subjects, roadblocks, police harassing surfers and park-goers, gang tangi’s, to name just a few.
Lies, no accountability, destruction of the nation’s economy and wealth creating ability. what a shower!

  We’ve gained practically nothing from our Lockdowns… we are just as likely to get fresh imports of Coronavirus-19 in the next few months as we were in February.
  
  You would think after all this time and the $$$$$$ that have been thrown around, that we could have a border, quarantine and testing system up and running in an efficient manner.

  Lockdown was never going to prevent deaths, other than those caused by an over-whelmed hospital system using triage processes (as happened in NY).
  
  Coming out of shut down should only mean that the DHBs have sorted their supply chains and stockpiled PPE, made as many ICU beds available as possible and increased national supply of ventilators and high-flow oxygen. As a bonus, now looks like we have *some* evidence that dexamethasone is effective (and cheap) I hope Pharmac is sorting the supply chain on that ASAP.
  
  Until there is 60-80% exposure (or a vaccine that 90%+ people will actually take), herd immunity won’t kick in. But the lockdown was meant for maximum survival for those that do get sick, it was never going to prevent virus transmission in the long term. Oh yeah, unless you close the borders completely (even to citizens like me), NZ will constantly import cases – stopping them from getting into community transmission it critical. Pity about the Ministry of Health incompetents then, aye?
  
  Another wave is all but inevitable, particularly in the 60+ age group (with death rates rising exponentially in 10-year increments). And for those saying that the mass protests across the world haven’t [yet] been followed by mass deaths – granted. But those protesters wore a lot of masks (some estimates are 75% plus), were outdoors and primarily younger people under 40. They probably are transmitting it but they’re mostly in the asymptomatic/mild disease categories.
  
  Personally I don’t think its ethical to throw older people and those with underlying disease (cardiovascular, immune etc) under the bus. But then I’m also not Josef Mengele or Hans Eisele.

As shown in an article early last month re: lack of commuting in AKL suburbs and socio-economic comparison during lockdown [I forget if it was $1uff or the herald] cell phone data is easily harvested from the towers themselves. Also, as has been mentioned by others, its a real stretch that two women from the UK cannot use google maps (or similar).

  Can’t remember where I saw/heard it a few weeks back, but someone (Jacinda? MSM Reporter?) was explaining the backstory of the (then) daily 1pm “covid” press conferences.
  
  Apparently the PM’s Covid team would talk with Mr Bloomfield a couple of hours beforehand, to discuss facts of the day and the messaging that would be used at 1pm stand-ups.
  
  (It was explained that this was to ensure both the PM and DG of Health didn’t provide “mixed messaging” when conveying critical information to the viewers and msm).
  
  So I guess this “messaging” is still occurring and “helpful” people aligned with the PM’s office are still offering “suggestions” to Mr Bloomfield on what to say?
  
  If so perhaps Mr Bloomfield better quickly realise that this “help” is “spin” and then one day when the “help” dries up then expect something new to happen – it’s called “meet the wheels of the Labour bus” and “take one for the (Labour) team” by being sacrificed and asked to resign!

Friend who usually holidays in Oz has taken his break in NZ, namely Napier/Gisborne/Whakatane. He describes how motels are generally booked out and I reply that is good, shows kiwis are travelling internally. Sadly tourism isn’t the case as most motels on the East Coast are full of ‘homeless’, with WINZ paying top room prices, no questions asked. Friend was lucky enough to secure one room in a motel and the owner apologised for the lack of accommodation, but needs must when no money is coming in from tourists. How long can this continue as it is bloody ridiculous genuine holiday makers are barred from getting decent motel rooms by a slush fund?

  This is a bit of a hard one.
  
  Suppose I own/lease a motel and things are dead slow. Along comes MSD who volunteer to rent the whole place for 6 months at full rate. What am I supposed to do? The clientele are probably not people I would normally want in the place, but – as you observed – needs must.
  
  A dollar is a dollar and all that. There will doubtless be some refurbishment after six months, but at full rate rental this is affordable.
  
  I know of one motel in Tauranga that did this and discovered he could even put dormitory-style beds in a disused meeting room (it had a toilet and shower) and charge for that too.
  
  All I can observe is that AFAIK, MSD don’t even beat on the moteliers to get a better price.

        That’s $2k/night = $730k/year or about $50k/unit/year.

        david, yes they do pay for any damage, but as one motelier told me, there are some homeless families who were so bad at renting in the private sector he has ended up with them. And yes they are right bastards to accommodate, so genuine occupiers get tarred with the same brush. This can only end with the motel industry getting to the stage where their image is tarnished badly. If this crap eventually disappears and I was to own a motel I would state quite clearly I was WINZ free.

        If I owned/leased a motel and I could get 25% overall occupancy for nice people and 100% for a group that included lowlifes sent by MSD (both at full price) I guess it might not be an easy decision.
        
        Tarnishing the image of the motel industry might be some way down my list of priorities. I guess you would have to be there ….. 🙁

Has it struck anyone how expensive these quarantine facilities are that these new arrivals are being housed at? Do they really have to stay in central Auckland in the height of luxury at the Pullman Hotel for eg. It’s not like they can go sightseeing anywhere round the town (or shouldn’t be)

Often times these NZ resident arrivals will be people who left NZ long ago and have not paid any tax into the system for many years. Maybe they could make a contribution to the quarantine housing cost?

Also anyone who’s been to the Novotel Ellerslie knows that that is a hugely expensive place to stay due to it’s proximity to the airport. Often $200-300 a day. Why can’t these people be housed at Whenuapai or some remotely located accomodation blocks somewhere in NZ? Maybe next to a deserted paddock and they could be let out once a day on to the paddock for fresh air and not endangering any of the team of 5m.

In China don’t people get taken out somewhere in the wop wops to some deserted block for quarantining? How much is this costing NZ? Is there any budgetary constraints on the quarantining? It’s not like NZ Inc is going to be flush with funds after Covid.

  Wild assumptions on Kiwis not being treated a sregular human beings on arrival(you want to put then in to huts in Whenuapai(of which there is buggar all spare accomodation by the way)
  
  Consider this.
  Top end hotels are empty due to lack of overseas(read people with money) visiting New Zealand.
  The Government has already thrown billions at paying to keep people being paid and businesses staying viable.
  Lower cost accomodation have been taken over by Governmnet paying to accomodate homeless.
  
  Now consider that the Governmnet will NOT be paying the $200-$300 a night you muse as the cost.
  
  Personally. I think is a good move by Governmnet.
  One of the few I must admit.
  
  It keeps the prisoners happy(being in upmarket digs)
  It keeps the hotels(and staff) viable until sanity returns.
  In the big scheme of things(Think Shane Jones $3,000,000,000 election/slush fund)

Yesterday the Mayor Queenstown was in the news suggesting that Queenstown be used for isolating foreign students (and provide much needed jobs and income for hospitality etc).

(I thought “great idea”, after all the students will stay in place and not ask for exemptions to travel before their two weeks are up …. but pity the timing was out when the media interviewed him when the s*** hit the fan about the two women travelling etc).

Hehe I wonder … if one were a “smart senior CoL Minister” right now, shouldn’t they get on the phone to the Queenstown Mayor pronto and take up his offer …but to house ALL returning travelers in self-isolation in Queenstown? That way the Govt can be spared the embarrassment of covid infected travelers tiki-touring and getting lost around the North Island between Auckland and Wellington, and wrecking their election chances??!!! 😉

  I think Bishop must have been approached as a Hutt MP as the women were doing the rounds trying to get their exemption through. Tv3 news also reported last night that the pair had approached them before the shit hit the fan. They must have wanted tv3 to run a news story to get the exemption through.
  
  Of course Bishop would have been expecting, regardless of the outcome, that proper quarantine procedures were in place. Is that the best Labour can think up?

  Bullshit Alex. MP’s advocated on behalf of constituents all the time. Bishop lobbied for these women on the basis that the MoH would grant them a compassionate exemption based on them meeting the testing requirements. It’s not Bishop’s fault they were released without having been tested; it’s entirely the fault of the MoH, and by extension, of the Minister of Health, who is ultimately responsible for decisions made by his Ministry.

  Are you suggesting that he prevailed upon MoH to grant leave without precautions (testing, etc). If so then surely you will be able to provide the link because you could bet your bottom dollar that Clark would have made thousands of photocopies and would have been dropping them from the rooftops.

And to add to the drama, the bloke “appointed” by Jacinda Ardern yesterday to take over responsibility for quarantine facilities, has actually been in charge of quarantine facilities for the last month!!

In breaking news, it’s been revealed the military official who was yesterday announced as the new head of our border controls has in fact been in charge of isolation facilities and repatriation for at least the past month.

The Prime Minister yesterday said she was bringing in the military to resolve current border botch-ups, but Checkpoint has had confirmation tonight that Air Commodore Digby Webb has already been in that role.

Checkpoint understands he was actually in charge of the unit when the decision was made to grant a compassionate exemption to two sisters who were released from managed isolation early before they were tested for Covid-19. But the Ministry of Health signs off on compassionate exemptions, not Air Commodore Webb.

The pair later tested positive and more than 300 people are now being contact-traced.

Kiwiblog poster Scott Hamilton’s campaign on the 19th century pirate Bully Hayes, which led to an Akaroa restaurant agreeing to change its name, hasn’t met full public support.

In fact, reports the Christchurch Star, in invited public suggestions for a new name, the leading suggestion is to keep the Bully Hayes name.

“The strongest suggestion that’s in the box, by a the biggest majority, is to keep the name,” restaurant owner Wayne Jones told the Star. “Also by email and Facebook it’s the strongest.”

Jones said he had been sent an article from an official Niuean web site that “actually debunks [the] majority of things people are saying. The majority of those things are not true.”

Jones has rethought the name, and has issued a gracious and generous statement….

…I’ve had a few angry messages from conservative New Zealanders who seem to believe that the Pacific slave trade is a mirage created in recent years by ‘woke academics’. I don’t think the phrase ‘woke academic’ fits John Coleridge Patteson, the first Anglican bishop of Melanesia & the William Wilberforce of the Pacific. Patteson died fighting the slave trade.

Patteson ran the Melanesian mission in Auckland & later Norfolk, where young men were trained in Christianity & various trades. In the 1860s he began hearing terrible stories from them, of ‘catch catch boats’ & stolen villages. Patteson began to write & speak against the slavers.

Thanks to the Anglican church’s Project Canterbury, we can now access some of Patteson’s denunciations of slavery. They make sad reading, with their accounts of canoes run down & their passengers seized, & islanders made to sign contracts they could not read.

Patteson travelled through the Pacific collecting stories of slave raids. Imperial administrators and some his superiors in the Anglican church began to resent his detailed and withering reports.

Patteson was a brilliant linguist, who eventually learned about a dozen Melanesian languages. He became steadily more sympathetic towards the region’s indigenous cultures, & argued against missionaries’ attempts to impose Western dress & manners on them.

In 1870 Patteson was recovering in Auckland from exhaustion when he realised that a schooner called the Lulu, a boat funded by Auckland’s business elite, had arrived with 27 ni-Vanuatu slaves. Patteson began to campaign against the introduction of slavery to NZ. ..’
