Prime Minister John Key should look across the Tasman to his newly installed Australian counterpart for a lesson in how to handle the controversial emissions trading scheme (ETS), according to the New Zealand Climate Science Coalition.

“Australia’s new Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, in her first media conference today, rebuffed suggestions that she might seek to revive Australian’s stalled version of an ETS, the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS). Ms Gillard made it clear that she will wait until after the next general election to gauge Australian opinion on the CPRS, and will proceed only if she finds there is in her words ‘community consensus’,” said the coalition’s honorary secretary, Terry Dunleavy.

“This is a lesson for our Prime Minister, who promised us pre-election that New Zealand would harmonise with Australia in legislative action on emissions of so-called ‘greenhouse’ gases. By persisting with its moderated ETS scheme in spite of the Rudd Labor government having months ago withdrawn its CPRS bill, the National government failed to honour that undertaking.

“But Julia Gillard has now given John Key a solution: defer any further action until there is community consensus. With serious opposition to the New Zealand ETS coming from farming and business organisations and countless ordinary Kiwis, as well as from within the membership of his own National Party, there is no way that Mr Key, or his ministerial propagandist Nick Smith, can claim any semblance of community consensus within New Zealand. Until that level of consensus has been established, and tested in a general election, our Prime Minister should follow the lead of his new Australian counterpart and defer implementation of the current ETS legislation due to come into effect next week. In so doing, he will honour National’s pre-election undertaking to harmonise with Australia.

“The ETS legislation will remain on our statute books as a demonstration that New Zealand is ready do its fair share once the rest of the world agrees how best to address climate issues.

“Meanwhile, Mr Key could also reflect on a variation of a famous line taken by a legendary earlier British Prime Minister: never in the history of New Zealand lawmaking have so many faced such heavy cost at the hands of so few,” said Mr Dunleavy.

I see that there was a ‘story’ (and I use the term loosely) on One News last night about how Kiwi’s don’t know the National Anthem in Maori, when Spain knows theirs in Spanish and Wales knows theirs in Welsh, etc…
They had a reporter on the street asking people to sing the National Anthem in Maori. Most could only manage the first two bars and they were trying to make out how bad Kiwis are.

HELLO?? Is Maori our National language? No, it isn’t. It’s English.
To try and compare this to the Welsh knowing their anthem in their own language with New Zealanders knowing our anthem in Maori is very weak indeed.

One has to ask how is she going to guage the ”community consensus” on a CPRS if not at a general election? All she is trying to do is prevent it from becoming an election issue………….and then pass one after labour (with her at the helm) have been re-elected.

If you weren’t too stoned to vote, you might remember that back in the day there used to be a referendum on alcohol licensing run alongside the elections. They stopped bothering in 1987 because the vote for “continuance”, ( i.e “leave it the way it is” ) had been resoundingly thrashing “state control” and “prohibition” for fifty years without exception.

I see the Maori are claiming Cape Reinga and Ninety Mile Beach and Rararawa.

May as well start at the top and work down.

That Rararawa beach is quite stunning, the sand is as WHITE and fine as flour.

Be a shame if they put a toll on that road. Could probably bear losing Ninety Mile Beach.

Years ago there used to be this old Maori lady at Taronui near Kerikeri who used to demand a couple of bucks.

I guess these days it will be $20?

That last sentence really gets me!
I know in New Zealand if you buy a dozen eggs it ALSO states the weight – these poor sods in Europe aren’t even allowed to do this! Bureaucracy gone mad, and common sense not even in sight.

Kris I actually think DNA is where G-d does a lot of His magic.

I’m not sure on it, myself, as to whether we should tinker with it. It’s a vast important field which will advance our collective understanding of how life works in fundamental ways, and what are we do – ignore all that? I’m not a fan of the ostrich approach. Whatever it is, it’s of benefit always, IMO, to know as much about the thing as we possibly can.

I agree in these very early days there are significant risks. Many of the negative issues arise due to human greed like the terminator seeds which won’t reproduce and which makes third-world farmers totally reliant on the seed company each and every year. I mean, come on. And of course you have the dangers of inadvertent cross-pollination with natural plants. The one that really gets me is the licensing of the IP for the human genome. Which of course results in a drug company owning the DNA script for say, curing pancreatic cancer, which anyone who wants it will be required to pay for through the nose. Which will result in parents being told that their child can be cured of everything, provided they mortgage their whole house, but unfortunately, we can only afford to do it for one of them. Etc. And the ability to patent life came about through a mis-guided US Supreme Court decision that allowed an oil company to patent an oil-eating bacteria it had created, which allowed drug-company corporate lawyers to gradually widen the door to get what we have today, all because the Justices didn’t understand biology.

So it hasn’t had a very bright start. But I do think long-term, in fifty years we will all be better off through it. All those issues are unfortunate but provided they are managed well, I don’t think any of them are show-stoppers.

The fact that man will manage the development and ‘distribution rights’, and knowing man’s greed and propensity to hold others to ransom, let alone the possibility of cross contamination, or that animal diseases could be introduced into the human gene pool, I have little real faith that such development will be very beneficial at all – in fact, likely the opposite.
And this, of course, ignores the issue of whether we even have ‘permission’ to do this sort of thing to start with.

But no doubt we will …

Well it’s one thing to pursue it as knowledge, and quite another to commercially exploit it. I agree that at the moment, we have a wild west scenario with no central authority. I think it’s urgently necessary to put that in place, cross-national, to manage this thing properly, on the basis that this is a unique field, unlike any other both in importance and in its ability to transform each and every species.

G-d have us permission to conquer the planet and everything in it. He didn’t stop us from understanding the knowledge that led to atomic weapons, and I don’t at the moment see Him doing so here. Our problem, as Einstein put it, is that: “It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity.”

He was right. Each and every time we start up in a new field, we fuck it up. Look at space. What have we done there? Just unnecessarily loaded up near-Earth orbit with thousands of space-junk fragments. And they’ve militarised it, however much the propaganda insists they haven’t. Look at nukes and the issues we’ve created for ourselves there.

However it’s part of human nature to push the boundaries of knowledge. Once many of us were simply happy merely to conquer territory, but since that era passed because we ran out of it, we’ve collectively focused on conquering the boundaries of knowledge. And that’s a good thing. It’s just too bad that none of our global leaders apparently ever took up the ‘How to be wise 101’ course of study, when they read for their degrees.

The point being, Pete, that we can control those risks that article mentioned in my 1:48, with engineering: i.e. those disasters don’t HAVE to happen. Fact is, there is no other energy source that produces as much energy, weight for weight as oil does when it burns. There just isn’t.

Indeed, Reid – and not just our global leaders.

However it’s part of human nature to push the boundaries of knowledge.

And I agree – nothing wrong with gaining knowledge per se.
But regarding genetic manipulation, I was actually being serious by citing the two links in my 2:00 pm comment; God was pretty down on ‘genetic cross-breeding’, and I believe this sets a precedent for us today in a similar vein: “Don’t muck with it!”

That’s right Pete, but that’s what capitalism is for. If there’s no gain, it’s not going to happen. And you can bet that each and every oil company in the world is going to be double-checking their own engineering on every single facility as they watch this unfold for BP. And they won’t forget to do that when they open up a new field in the future.

God was pretty down on ‘genetic cross-breeding’, and I believe this sets a precedent for us today in a similar vein: “Don’t muck with it!”

I don’t read into GE science any desire at present to explore the potential to create new human variants. I have no doubt that various militaries are exploring genetic capability enhancement and may even be experimenting. I think I recall a doco on it, chap called Van Damme.

I do see the current focus on understanding genetic origins of diseases as being incredibly worthwhile, because even if it is commercially rorted for the first 25 years, after that it’s public domain.

I also think that we have an incredible interest in animal genetics. We should be moving much faster on that than we are. I wish the govt would get that message.

At the end of the day Kris, if G-d didn’t want us to play in this arena, he would have designed Messrs Watson and Crick slightly differently.

A sober review of Reagan’s presidency doesn’t yield the seamlessly conservative record being peddled today. Federal government expanded on his watch. The conservative desire to outlaw abortion was never seriously pursued. Reagan broke with the hardliners in his administration and compromised with the Soviets on arms control. His assault on entitlements never materialized; instead he saved Social Security in 1983. And he repeatedly ignored the fundamental conservative dogma that taxes should never be raised.

All of this has been airbrushed from the new literature of Reagan. But as any balanced account must make clear, Reagan acceded to political compromises as all presidents do once in office–and on many occasions did so willingly. In fact, however often unintentionally, many of his actions as president wound up facilitating liberal objectives. What this clamor of adulation is seeking to deny is that beyond his conservative legacy, Ronald Reagan has bequeathed a liberal one.

In terms of his military-industrial programs? I agree, and I think he did that in part because he believed it was right to do it for security reasons, and it also had the good effect of giving the Star Wars program credibility which it had to have in every way.

Privately he changed a lot of financial markets regulation, initiated asset sales and did a lot of other things just like Thatcher and Douglas did. George Shultz was with Friedman in the Chicago School and so Friedman’s Hayek-based ideas had an advocate at the top table throughout his two terms.

And here I was, thinking a rainbow was an optical and meteorological phenomenon that causes a spectrum of light to appear in the sky when the Sun shines onto droplets of moisture in the Earth’s atmosphere. They take the form of a multicoloured arc, with red on the outer part of the arch and violet on the inner section of the arch.

Of course, I also know that every time I see a rainbow, god is having gay sex.

That’s precisely what it is, Paul. And since G-d designed the universe and everything in it including all the laws of physics and biology and space-time and all the rest of it, since He designed ALL of those, it was really rather clever of Him to gives us a symbol which just created itself every now and then, without Him having to do any work at all, wasn’t it.

I think the relevant point is Paul, that G-d doesn’t cause bad outcomes – we do. We do it to ourselves. There is always a right or wrong path on everything and we are always free to chose and if we weren’t free to do that every step of the way, what would life be like?

Evil is not defined only as assaults on a person or theft, it’s defined as anything bad, sub-optimal or less than perfect. Anything less than that is not entirely good therefore it has evil in it. So just want to set that scene.

That means that all our thoughts have to be good as well because our thoughts are what drive our behavior. So no-one ever has an inappropriate thought of any kind, they always get the right answer and then they do it.

The implications of this state of being is that our entire life down to the minutia of every single thought we ever have, is perfectly planned and perfectly predictable. At every moment everything will be perfect.

So where’s the opportunity for personal growth? How do we get triumphs over adversity, in this landscape? How do we get to ever be a winner, if everyone always wins all the time? Etc.

Muliagas seek compensation

The family of an Auckland woman who died after her power was cut off is reportedly suing for compensation. Folole Muliaga was on an oxygen machine in 2007 when Mercury Energy cut off her electricity because the account was overdue.

The Prime Minister at the time, Helen Clark, stepped in and was scathingly disapproving of the action taken. Mercury later presented the Muliaga family with $10,000, but now lawyer Olinda Woodroffe is reported to be seeking more.

In 2008 a coroner’s report found a link between the Mrs Muliaga’s death and the cutting off of her electricity.

Why don’t you look it up yourself, phil. It’s in Leviticus. Don’t forget to read about the leprosy issue as well. Another part touching on a similar issue is in Genesis where G-d condemns Women to pain in child-birth because of Eve’s part in the Original Sin.

Of course, to properly understand what these are saying you need to understand a lot of Biblical context, which takes years, and from the tone of your comment, I’m not sure you’re properly equipped in that department, and I can’t be arsed interpreting it for you because I’m scared you’d only sneer at it and I don’t take personal criticism very well.

Authorities vow to battle boy racers

Local authorities in Christchurch are preparing to fight the boy racer battle for as long as necessary.

They are pleased last night’s last big cruise didn’t eventuate.

Boy racers were rumoured to be taking to the streets en masse for one last time, before a bylaw limiting their activities comes into effect.

Christchurch mayor Bob Parker says no single measure will solve the problem. He says the council will do whatever it has to, to make sure it gets on top of it.

Mr Parker says there is a hardcore group who will still be prepared to bend the rules.

and I see the East Coast hori’s have decided today was going to be a good day at the beach. (for a midwinter swim, I guess. can’t see why anyone would bother to go otherwise.

East Coast residents will take to the beaches today, to make it clear they do not want anything like the Gulf of Mexico oil spill on their pristine coast.

They are worried about an exploratory permit the Government has awarded to Petrobras for the Raukumara Basin.

Concerned residents will link hands at beaches from the Eastern Bay of Plenty, to East Cape, to Gisborne at midday – and also light controlled fires as a show of solidarity.

Organiser Ani Pahuru-Huriwai says everyone has seen the devastation the BP spill has caused the ecosystem. She says the threat of it happening on the East Cape is really scary for those who rely on the sea for food.
