Suicide is getting more coverage, is that good or not? Or should it remain untalked about?

Publicising methods of suicide are surely not going to make much if any difference, if someone is serious about doing it surely they’ll find a way anyway.

Much higher death rate than the road toll, trying to ignore it won’t make it go away. One mother speaks out:

A mother who lost her son to suicide says more reporting of the issue is needed to generate change.

Christchurch city councillor Gail Sheriff says she won’t stand at the upcoming election after receiving abusive phone calls for going on a $4000 ratepayer-funded trip to study sandcastles in the United States.

Anyway, on the Nats’ Fire at Will law extension, how about this?

Responses from the advocates of this law very welcome. I think you will struggle to find any justification for the way this employee has been treated, and her lack of legal redress for it.

Like the dairy worker who was conned into joining the union not long after getting his job. Union called a strike Worker lost his job along with his mates and now has been replaced with someone else. Doesn’t help him nor his 5 kids.
Despises the union for what they did. Doesn’t give him his job back.

And where are the smart arse unionists, well back in their office looking for another way to rort and destroy others.

The Budget……………… An accountants advice………………. NZ version
Let me help you understand the “Economic Stimulus

This year NZ taxpayers will receive ‘Economic Stimulus’ = less tax –
but more GST.

This is indeed a very exciting program, and I’ll explain it by using a Q & A format;-

Q. What is an ‘Economic Stimulus’ tax break?
A. It is money that the government will give back to taxpayers.

Q. Where will the government get this money ?
A. From taxpayers.

Q. So the government is giving me back my own money ?
A. Only a smidgen of it.

Q. What is the purpose of this payment ?
A. The plan is for you to use the money to purchase a High-definition TV set, thus stimulating the economy.

Q. But isn’t that stimulating the economy of China ?
A. Shut up.

Below is some advice on how to best help the NZ economy by
spending your extra money, from paying less tax and more gst:

If you spend the stimulus money at K Mart, the money will go to China or Sri Lanka

If you spend it on Petrol, your money will go to the Arabs.

If you purchase a computer, it will go to India, or Taiwan.

If you purchase fruit and vegetables, some will stay in New Zealand, some will go to USA, Indonesia or Australia.

If you buy an efficient car, it will go to Japan or Korea.

If you pay your credit cards off or buy stock it will go to bank
management bonuses and they will hide it offshore.

Instead, keep your money in New Zealand by:

1) Spending it at Garage sales

2) Going to Football games

3) Spend it on prostitutes

4) Buy beer

5) A tattoo

6) Get stuff on Trade Me

These are the only New Zealand businesses still operating

Package recommendation:

Go to a Football game with a tattooed prostitute that you met at a
garage sale and drink beer all day! Then spend the rest of the night
trolling through Trade Me for a bargain so you can spend the rest of
your gifted tax money.

I don’t believe anybody can say conclusively that increased coverage of suicide in the media is a wholly positive thing. It’s relatively well-known that spikes in suicide numbers often occur immediately following high-profile suicide cases.

However, I’d welcome anything that gets the debate about suicide out into the open. Depite all the hand-wringing and terrible stats, it’s a conversation that never seems to be aired. It would seem, in light of the evidence, that the restrictions on reporting details of suicide cases should remain. What’s needed is more public awareness and education around suicide and mental health.

I’m generalising, obviously, but in my experience Kiwis seem to have very backwards attitudes to depression and mental disorders. It’s where the whole ‘harden up’/’she’ll be right’/’stop whinging’ thing really causes problems. Following the Toran Henry story, the amount of vitriol flung around the blogs and message boards at that poor woman was incredible, with many saying her son’s death must be a direct result of poor parenting. So many myths surrounding suicide prevail – until suicide touched my life, I thought I knew a fair bit about depression and suicide through school and the media – research afterwards proved I was completely wrong. But it’s something nobody really gets educated on, because it’s so taboo.

Would a hooker warrant such a press release? I am no fan of Michael, but I wouldn’t bat an eyelid if he slept with a hooker. Who cares? Don’t think it would hurt him politically either, not too much anyway.

So we can conclude from this she’s sane, reasonable and doesn’t wear mascara 😀 However, what muck-raking scumbag of a “reporter” and which media outlet thinks this is “news”? Laws does more than enough in his public life deserving of contempt and criticism, his private life is totally irrelevant unless it reveals some hypocrisy. For instance if he ever falls on hard times and ends up on a benefit, he deserves what will undoubtedly come his way.

Of course to some degree this is self induced. If he didn’t peddle himself to Wimminz Daze and these other rags by allowing himself to be pictured with his family, there wouldn’t be any interest in why he’d taken up with someone else. But that’s not sufficient excuse for this nonsense passed off as news.

I hope the publication in question languishes unsold on the shelves but of course it won’t… NZer’s have been trained to desire salacious gossip over complex stuff like principles and policy.

Anyway, on the Nats’ Fire at Will law extension, how about this?

So the “actor” says: “…to be fired in the last two weeks coming up to Christmas by the 90-day law is just…” and what I want to know is: how can a real situation, portraying a real actual case, in every way, so as to be believed by your average reef-fish, cleverly designed, happen last Christmas re: the 90-day law when it only came in not that long ago?

Tainui to build two Whanau Ora centres
Waikato Maori will build two Whanau Ora centres as part of a plan to address poverty and under-achievement in the region.

The centres would be part of the iwi’s initiative to strengthen relationships between Maori service providers, mainstream providers and government agencies.

Tainui Te Arataura chair Tukoroirangi Morgan told a meeting of about 100 senior leaders from the public and private sectors in Hamilton tonight that short-term funding and inadequate resources had failed Maori.

..short term funding and inadequate resources have failed maori??? They have had billions and billions thrown at them… maybe maori have just failed maori all by themselves…and Tuku Morgans involved…it smells already.

Maoris seem to respond to community trusts when they’re well run. Dunno why, myself, but they do.

IMO, A-class trusts like Waiperewa add heaps of value relative to the input. Tuku’s not dumb, either. He’s done a lot, in his life.

Looks like DPF is coming back to a storm in an eggcup. Labour may have a field day accusing the Government os subsidising Kiwiblog – there is (or was depending when you read it) an IRD banner ad at the top advising people to prepare for the GST increase. Now of course Google pays Kiwiblog for the ‘billboard’ space and chooses what to place there. But Labour is unlikely to let thatget in the way of a good story.

Why is it that the unions believe that if you employ someone you have to adopt them. Th ‘TV girl’ was laid off because the Owners sold the business allowing the new owners to choose their own staff. She would have received severence pay. She was invited to apply for a job with the new Owners. They chose to employ her on a 90 day trial. It did not work out for whatever reason. Big deal. Business is not welfare.

Of course Toad and his ilk can dredge up a few sob stories from so called aggrieved people being fired during their 90 day trial… after all, these types of people are most likely Green and Labour voters. Work shy, willing to blame others for their failings and sooks.

Good to see Paul Henry give Helen Kelly over at the CTU a proper interview and calling her out on her absurd claims about the 90 day law. This law works well overseas and it’s not our fault limp wristed unionists can’t do a proper days work. No employer would fire a good employee. Toad can cry crocodile tears as much as he likes, but nobody buys into this.
