I watched with disgust the illegal occupation of Council land in Northland. All treaty negotiations including those relating to the foreshore and seabed should be put on hold until the Maori Party agree to the rule of law. Any MP who does not has not place in Parliament.

When is National going to enforce the law? A woman was assaulted and the police refused to law charges.

Someone famous admits sexually molesting a young child, stating he thought it was his partner.
But the case gets postponed because of lack of DNA evidence!?

Surely the fact the incident happened is not in contention! And there are plenty of times that DNA cannot be recovered after sexual assault – it doesn’t mean the trial shouldn’t go ahead!

Has The Entertainer changed his story and done what my lawyer friends always say to do in times of legal trouble: “deny, deny, deny”?

A quick Google of Roy Wade makes him seem like a reasonable (i.e. not too soft on crims) judge. Hopefully he’s making sure the case is watertight before going to trial (although I didn’t think that was the judge’s role). I’d be disheartened if there were some backroom dealings because of this guy’s fame.

If they re-analyse the sample and still find no male DNA, the trial surely must still go ahead.

What The Comedian ALLEGEDLY did was far, far worse. His PR people actually admitted the offence when it first came to light, but said that The Comedian was drunk, and that it was a case of mistaken identity. The shearer told me the other day that some states in the US had passed laws banning the docking of lamb’s tails because it is cruel. So we have bred sheep for 10,000 years to have wool that does not fall off, and the animal rights people want tails left there to collect shit and get fly blown. Sheep get daggy enough as it is. Wankers. I am sure it is coming to a supermarket carpark near you, complete with a freshly washed lamb to show how unnecessary docking is.

Ah – No. That’s a typically Kiwi perspective (because we just love more government). I had the same conversation with my niece in D.C who was jumping up and down about the incompetence of the Federal Government – and she’s a right-winger on many issues.

I made the point to her that the US government was designed deliberately from the ground up to not “work” by making it fight against itself: President vs Congress vs Senate vs. Supreme Court vs. State Governments……..

The idea was to prevent any government from imposing vast, insane schemes – led by small groups of “experts” – upon the population. Since that’s the basic thrust of the left-wing I can understand the frustration they feel at the US.

If you think it’s such a bad system compared to NZ because “government working” is better than “government not working”, I invite you to contemplate the ever-growing amount of rules and regulations – growing perhaps only a small amount per year but adding up thanks to an effect not unlike compound interest – and ask yourself whether you feel you’ll ever be able to stop the well-meaning bureaucrats who nuture those rules and endlessly create new ones because that’s there job.

The US has similar problems, but they at least have an institutional design that gives them a chance at breaking the cycle. Here in NZ – not so much.

Maybe I should have said “good government working” – which in my view would mean minimising it’s own footprint, and limiting and simplifying rules and regulations.

President vs Congress vs Senate vs. Supreme Court vs. State Governments……..

I understand the US being structured to fight against any part becoming too powerful, but one very powerful component is missing from this – the lobbyists and their big pockets.

Al Gore’s much-hyped Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX) will be dead before the end of the year, and will end carbon trading.

Global warming-inspired cap and trade has been one of the most stridently debated public policy controversies of the past 15 years. But it is dying a quiet death. In a little reported move, the Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX) announced on Oct. 21 that it will be ending carbon trading — the only purpose for which it was founded — this year.

Although the trading in carbon emissions credits was voluntary, the CCX was intended to be the hub of the mandatory carbon trading established by a cap-and-trade law, like the Waxman-Markey scheme passed by the House in June 2009.

CCX’s panicked original investors bailed out this spring, unloading the dog and its across-the-pond cousin, the European Climate Exchange (ECX), for $600 million to the New York Stock Exchange-traded Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) — an electronic futures and derivatives platform based in Atlanta and London. (Luckier than the CCX, the ECX continues to exist thanks to the mandatory carbon caps of the Kyoto Protocol.)

The ECX may soon follow the CCX into oblivion, however — the Kyoto Protocol expires in 2012. No new international treaty is anywhere in sight.

And yet the MSM says nothing.

I wonder why? Is it that they are all leftist and don’t like to think they have failed, or is it just that they don’t like to admit they were wrong for swallowing the global warming line, hook and sinker?

And why does NZ still have it’s ETS, if not to tax the poor NZ taxpayer?

You answered the question already. Regardless of how Key’s Labour-lite government tries to disguise it, the ETS is a new tax paid for no other reason than to fatten the state coffers.

So much for the mythical National Party, the party of lower taxes, supporter of private enterprise, and personal responsibility. Unabashed liars is what they are.

Isn’t it more like a tax to pay for our obligations under the Kyoto protocol?

Labour wanted a carbon tax initialli, I believe, and the Greens have always preferred that option, but National torpedoed it. So now we’re stuck with this.

I suppose the other option is regulation — set emission standards and enforce them. But the government felt that a market-based system was better ideologically.

Fletch, I have no particularly strong feelings about climate change. But I would point out that if an informed buyer was prepared to pay US$600m for the CCX and ECX that suggests they must have some high-quality revenues and earnings – which seems inconsistent with your point that those exchanges have utterly failed.
