  Halting dangerous global warming means putting the landmark Paris agreement into practice – without the US – and tackling the divisive issue of compensation.
  
  Climate change is already significantly increasing the likelihood of extreme weather, from heatwaves to floods. But without sharp cuts to global carbon emissions, we can expect “severe, widespread, and irreversible impacts” for billions of people and the natural world. National action needs to be significantly toughened to meet to goal of keeping global temperature rise to well below 2C.
  
  All the science, and the battering that extreme weather has inflicted this year from floods in India and Nigeria to hurricanes in the Caribbean and wildfires in the US and Europe, indicates that global emissions need to start falling urgently – in the next few years.
  
  The current pledges for carbon cuts by the world’s nations would mean at least 3C of global warming and severe damage.

  1. Methane: getting to the meat
  Carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels is the main greenhouse gas, but methane and nitrous oxide are more potent and, unlike CO2, still rising. The major source is livestock farming, in particular belching cattle and their manure.
  
  The world’s appetite for meat and dairy foods is rising as people’s incomes rise, but the simple arithmetic is that unless this is radically curbed, there is no way to beat global warming. The task looks daunting – people hate being told what to eat. However, just in the last year, a potential solution has burst on to the market: plant-based meat, which has a tiny environmental footprint.
  
  Food that looks and tastes just as good as meat or dairy products but is made from plants has attracted heavy investment. The buzz is particularly loud in the US, where Bill Gates has backed two plant-based burger companies and Eric Schmidt, formerly CEO of Google, believes plant-based foods can make a “meaningful dent” in tackling climate change.
  
  Perhaps even more telling is that major meat and dairy companies are now piling in with investments and acquisitions, such as the US’s biggest meat processor, Tyson, and multinational giants Danone and Nestlé. The Chinese government has just put $300m (£228m) into Israeli companies producing lab-grown meat, which could also cut emissions.
  
  New plant-based products, from chicken to fish to cheese, are coming out every month. “We are in the nascent stage,” says Alison Rabschnuk at the US nonprofit group the Good Food Institute. “But there’s a lot of money moving into this area.”
  
  … in the past year, sales of other meat and dairy substitutes have climbed 8%, with some specific lines, such as yoghurt, shooting up 55%. “I think the writing’s on the wall,” says Rabschnuk. Billionaire entrepreneur Richard Branson agrees. “I believe that in 30 years or so we will no longer need to kill any animals and that all meat will either be [lab] or plant-based, taste the same and also be much healthier for everyone.”

      Quite frankly, any time and effort spent trying to understand the ‘climate debate’ (it’s not a debate, it is a shouting match) is a complete waste. Get on with your life and leave the screamers on both sides to scream. The science is settled and 99.999 percent (like climate stats, that one was made up, but we all agree on its validity) of us will have no impact one way or another on the inevitability of what’s going to happen anyway.

      For one it does motivate me to find a rebuttal. That forces me to keep reading the journals and keep up to date on the issue. I read both sides of the argument, and there are areas that need a lot more research ( such as the saturation of the atmosphere with respect to CO2 – this is critical and hugely debated)

        My friend is the same with his belief in flat earth – he would never have investigated unless he had heard President Obama refer to AGW-deniers as a version of the “flat earth society”. Was intrigued what it was…and now he is a flat earther.
        
        BTW, Maggy, he is getting to the stage where he wants some rigorous examination of his curvature experiments and findings before going public as the NZ advocate, and was looking to contact you in the New Year. I mentioned you to him as a good science all-rounder. I think he is looking to pay for your services, or at least call in to Gizzie and shout you out to dinner for a preliminary discussion. I mentioned to him your feedback re refraction but he is insistent that what he is seeing on the distant horizon, which should not be visible due to curvature is still too great…

        As I’ve pointed out on a number of occasions to my good friend Scott, the Jewish book of Genesis in particular, as well as the rest of the Jewish Tanakh/Old Testament in general works with the cosmological schema common to the rest of the Ancient Near East that the earth is indeed….flat.

I like to chat to the checkout operators when I am at the supermarket.

Last night I was talking to a bright young man who told me that he was working on the checkouts to save money for university.

I remarked to him that he must be pleased that he was now going to get his first year free of fees, and his response surprised me.

His thought was that making the first year free is likely to encourage a lot of people to enroll and simply mess about for a year. It would be much better, he thought, to make the second year free, so that universities were not just filled up with time wasters.

He’s probably correct.

  Jacinda Arden will presumably tell him and all other students who work checkouts that it is now quite OK to sell booze, confectionery etc on WINZ chits (remember the big uproar over this in the Helen Clark era when a schoolgirl checkout operator refused such a sale as required by law and was hung out to dry by journos, politicians and others).

The point is that first year free benefits all those who choose to study, from those doing Dentistry through to those who would stand to massively benefit from having Level 3 certificate.   The young man should relish the moment. As a bright young person working in a checkout he is an oracle, his wisdom accepted and acknowledged on here.
  
  He will go to university, study, and read, and test, and research and sweat and come out the other end years and years away and be an educated expert.
  
  And people on here will rubbish his views in his field of expertise and knowledge because they think they know better than him.

  I’ll reply with as much detail as Tom did. No he didn’t, and the Texas shooter should have been barred under existing laws from buying a gun, but the government failed to carry out its responsibilities under the existing law to notify so that fact would be known.
  
  So, shooter shouldn’t have been able to buy gun under existing law, government (at the time under that fuckwit Obama) fucked up so he could do so, and you claim *more* laws would help ?
  
  Sounds like bullshit on stilts to me.

    He shouldn’t have been able to to buy guns for an entirely different reason i.e. his dishonourable discharge from the military. Unfortunately someone, not Obama, slipped up and didn’t enter the information in the database.
    At the end of April President Trump signed a bill that overturned an Obama-era rule designed to stop certain individuals with mental disorders from buying guns. This may or may not not have effected this bloke.

      The legislation was flawed in that it took too much of a broad brush approach.
      It had support from a number of Dems to repeal it.
      The shooter Kelley had been convicted of domestic assault.
      Anyone with a conviction for domestic assault can’t buy a gun.
      The conviction was never put on the database so when the gun retailer did the background check it never came up.

      So a guy who was was gun-controlled, got a gun and shot a bunch of people. Doh! So gun control doesn’t work.
      
      And a guy who was entitled to carry a gun saved dozens of lives because he was carrying a gun.
      
      Boiling that all down to two key facts:
      – gun control failed
      – an NRA member saved lives because of his gun ownership.
      
      Alcohol prohibition ballooned criminalised alcohol consumption and production.
      
      Drug prohibition has resulted in widespread criminal drug production.
      
      The most gun-controlled city in the US (Chicago) averages a Vegas shooting body count every week!
      
      But “feelings” help libtards with their belief that gun-control will save lives.
      
      I fear for the species.

    Yes, I agree with you. It is because he promotes himself as a small “c” conservative with ACT leanings. He is also son in law of Sue Wood, which supposedly gives him inside knowledge of the National Party. All that says to me, is ohhh F**k, is the Auckland party still in the hands of the Eden/Epsom/Tamaki/Onehunga cabel of old. If so, the party in Auckland needs surgery again. Because that is what helped f**k things up in the period 1982 to 1986.

        I agree with you. The block I spoke of have always been in place, & have maintained their presence as can be seen by the number of my contemporaries who now occupy key positions in the party. This block were never ideological, but more about maintaining government & power – hence they played to/supported Muldoon when it was necessary.

Interesting article on CO2 per country this century. USA by far has made the biggest reduction, possibly due to the massive increase in fracking. China and India have gone the other way and pumped more CO2 out than ever before

  It is wrong to account for CO2 by production. It should rather be done by consumption.
  
  For example about 70% of NZ’s CO2 production is generated in making our exports that get consumed in other countries, thus shifting the production from the country of consumption to NZ because they don’t need so many farting/burping cows of their own.
  
  If that was accounted for correctly then the CO2 would be attributed to the place where the dairy products (or whatever) are consumed.
  
  If you also did that with China, then their footprint would go down a lot and USA and Europe would go up.

    It is also wrong to ignore the carbon absorbed by farming. The only way a cow can fart methane is if it has ingested carbon through eating grass, the carbon in the grass was absorbed from the atmosphere. Cows don’t ‘make’ carbon, there are of course valid arguments over the impact of methane expelled versus CO2 absorbed but those are different to releasing carbon that has been stored as oil etc.

What they don’t tell you is Exit Glacier has been receding since before the Industrial Revolution. Btw, there are some 300,000 glaciers in Alaska alone. That is a lot of ice that will never melt any time soon.

Red Radio’s Guyon’s interview with the Super Fund showed he has no idea what “Re-Insurance” is or is all about. He went on a fishing expedition to find a scandal and all that happened was he lost his bait, hook, line and sinker. He tried the same same thing with Pat Newman in regards to a teacher carrying a student to the headmasters office. He read out a section from the rules, realised he did not understand it so he had to ask Pat to explain it.
The man is a fool.

  I heard the interview also. He is only as good as his research. Which goes to show the NZ media lost the ability to investigate, research and ask legitimate questions.
  I remember 30 plus years ago Bill Ralston & Jim Hopkins telling us at an ECB party function that proper journalism in NZ was dead because of deadlines in newsrooms & 24/7, little did they foresee the internet as well.

Interestingly, on that occasion then Labour leader Phil Goff was asked by Kathryn Ryan how he would pay for his election promises, he said he would cut military spending and have less patrols in NZ waters (3 years later he criticized National for not spending enough on the military).

Putting aside TDS, or any anti Trump sentiment, I found myself becoming increasingly angry with the TV One News presentation last evening. I spent, much of the afternoon watching Trump’s every move in South Korea, courtesy of Sky and Fox.
I reached the point at about 6.10pm where I wanted to throw my laptop at the TV and then send the account for the repair of both to TVNZ. Why? The anti-Trump coverage was palpable.
Peter Williams delivered his producer-prepared script, and I know more than enough of what takes place, to know how the garbage he reads, and the clips he presents, come from the faceless left-wing manipulators off camera, but weaving their evil and palpably based views via teleprompter. The worst part is that there is no means of writing to question their coverage. And further, the BSA is xyz useless.
TV One “News” started their coverage with a painful piece from a BBC idiot who, speaking in a voice that sounded as if he was being strangled, featured two small groups of youth quakers – one wanting “peace” with NK, and the other wanting Trump to go away. The previous evening this same BBC idiot said that there were fears in Seoul that Trump’s visit would result in a dangerous war situation. It would be better, he claimed, if Trump were to cancel his visit and go directly to China.

The Fox coverage was wall to wall, no pejorative language either way, just live coverage as events unfolded. Fox did have John Bolton (former US UN Ambassador) and Tony Gorka, Hungarian born and a hard-line anti-communist /anti- ISIS / former Trump advisor, watching and making side bar contributions from time to time.
But the nub of the live coverage was the 35-minute speech given by Trump. He was applauded on many points, and his total presentation was greeted by a standing ovation by all members of the audience.
And then came TV One’s 6 pm “news” and I screamed in disbelief. It was at that point I wanted to throw things at Williams. I would cheerfully have jumped inside the TV screen and strangled the Beeb Beeb Ceeb idiot.
To think that we have now got many months ahead with those TV One (& 3) news and Red Radio fuckwits talking about “our Prime Minister”. To put it bluntly, Ardern is not my Prime Minister, and never will be. Already the idiotic MSM is bowing down before the silly woman, praising her “agenda” for APEC. What rubbish. By the same token Peters is not to me a legitimate MP, and certainly not as legitimate Minister, notwithstanding the warrant he has – a warrant issued because of his political duplicity. But I digress …..
There, I have got that off my chest. Others may agree or disagree. That is their prerogative. But if they wish to live in ignorance and to rely upon the crap served to us by the Peters/Ardern Regime and their MSM surrogates, that is their decision.
And their misfortune.

  I have not watched TV1 news (or any TV) for about 12 years now. I get the news from the internet and read a variety of outlets for balance. I don’t read any New Zealand papers. The Guardian, although left, is exceptionally well written. Al Jazeera is pretty good, except possibly for their anti Israel bias. I skim Stuff for local headlines, but they are mostly crap. As for the farce that sits on the treasury benches at the moment, people know my views. I watched Bill tear into them yesterday. Let’s see if relentlessly positive Jacinda has the balls to go to Vanguard….

That’s more than enough. Evenings are now calm and restful. Bill was absolutely brilliant yesterday. Poor old WO will be having conniptions! Only 2 years and 11 months to go.

Interesting interview at Reason magazine about Bitcoin and the “Blockchain” IT that makes it possible.

If you regard the whole phenomena as being yet another scam you would be wrong: it’s the blockchain that is the key, and it’s really all about maintaining precise control over asset ownership. And if you want to know why that’s important, then the discussion about our current system of buying and selling stocks, bonds and other financial instruments is pretty hair-raising. She mentions a recent court-case involving the Dole company, which you can read about here: a key quote:

These issues have been brought to the forefront by the Dole case. In the settlement, 4,662 people and entities claimed 49,164,415 shares at $2.74 per share.

There is just one problem: Dole had only 36,793,758 shares outstanding.

Blockchain would likely fix that. How it works with taxes is perhaps the bigger question.

  The blockchain does add some very interesting technology in that it can be used to verify that transactions have happened and verify documents etc.
  
  The problem with bitcoin is that it is not tied to anything of value.
  
  A dollar gives you a slice of the economy. Printing more dollars slices up the economy into smaller chunks and thus causes inflation (unless the economy has grown faster than the number of dollars). Even in Zimbabwe, the dollar is still a slice of something.
  
  A lump of silver is a lump of silver.
  
  But a bitcoin is just a number that is not tied to anything.
  
  Some people will argue that the bitcoin has value due to the energy expended in mining it. That’s a misunderstanding of value. If I walk to the top of a hill and down again I have expended a lot of energy but I have created no value.
  
  All bitcoin has going for it is classic bubble economics: it has value because people think they can sucker someone else into buying it later for more money. And bubbles always burst.

    Yes, the only purpose of the “mining” is to have a physical constraint on the production by using an arbitrarily difficult calculation which does consume a lot of power. As such there as a natural equilibrium between how much power you can afford vs how much “value” is obtained. If suddenly power prices drop significantly (even for someone geogrpahically isolated) or big steps in computing power come along (quantum computing?) then the “value” can change dramatically. We’ve not really seen the results of something like that but I wouldn’t get involved on that basis. If ads on the Herald are telling me to invest in bitcoin, I’d be shorting it.
    
    That’s not a criticism of the blockchain at all, merely the mechanism of introducing new coins.

      The mining secures the chain by directly requiring complicated work within the process of building the chain. This means that the miners cannot discard already accepted blocks by forcing a “reorg” or switch to alternate end to the chain, as it becomes both costly and inherently time consuming to do so. In theory 51% of mining power is bandied about as a danger, but the cost involved in this level of undermining bitcoin and the investment in devices specifically for mining bitcoin, mean that it is extremely unlikely if not merely a canard.
      
      Quantum computing supposedly has little danger in the future for the difficulty operations used in bitcoin mining, so have little chance of accelerating the operations or allowing breaking the keys people use to facilitate coin theft.

      Block chain is just an encrypted database with linked records. I had to solve that problem of integrity of visibly alterable records in accounting software.
      The effort that goes into bitcoin “mining” must be largely make work- my modest PC does over a million full numeric operations a second.
      The excessive computing to acquire a bitcoin may give a sense of scarcity but that is not value. Value arises out of earnings which bitcoin is devoid of.

      Well in some ways stuff is going slowly and in other ways fast…
      
      The reality is that there is a lot of stuff to fix with limited resources, so priorities matter.
      
      A lot of work in the CBD is very slow because building first need to be “deconstructed” carefully so as to do it safely and without damage to other buildings. That’s a lot harder than flat-out demolition of sound buildings.

    I’m not a Green Party supporter, but I am green, and believe in the Gaia hypothesis. Nothing in that view would lead me to say we should do nothing about the effects of natural disasters. Yes, earthquakes and other destructive phenomena are natural, but that does not mean we should not rebuild communities destroyed by their activity, and I strongly doubt that anyone in the Green Party would think that either.

Nice to see that Granny Herald’s editorial staff have picked up on the significance of Winston Peters filing legal papers against four National MP’s the day before the General Election:

For two weeks last month, Winston Peters told the public he was negotiating in good faith with National and Labour, and asked the public to believe the country’s interest was uppermost in his concerns as he weighed up whether to support the incumbent Government for a fourth term, or install a Labour-led coalition.

It turns out he had initiated legal proceedings against leading National ministers the day before the election over the disclosure he had been receiving superannuation at the single rate for seven years while living with a partner.

Peters’ lawsuit is unwise on several levels. Most obviously, it reminds the public of a matter treated by all his rivals in the campaign as a genuine, though surprising, mistake.

Surprising, because no MP has taken a more intense political interest in the terms and conditions of NZ Superannuation than Peters over his long career.

Then there’s this:

It is disturbing that Peters seeks to have journalists reveal their sources through court discovery procedures. He evidently wants the court to order them to hand over phone records, notes and emails relating to his superannuation overpayment.

His attitude to news media going about their job leaves a lot to be desired and may come to pose a threat to press freedom if he now uses his position to try to put his antagonism into law.

But the main reason this lawsuit is unwise is it discredits his post-election negotiations and inevitably reflects on the Government he has chosen. It is now obvious there was extremely little possibility he could work with Bill English, Paula Bennett, Steven Joyce and Anne Tolley since he had initiated legal action against them the day before the election.

Is there a journalist in New Zealand with the testicular fortitude to ask Peters directly whether his “negotiations” with National were a sham? Even more importantly, someone needs to ask Jacinda Ardern and all those who were part of the Labour negotiating team whether Peters disclosed this legal move, or whether he played them like he played the people of New Zealand.

And to all those who voted for NZ First so Peters would keep National honest, thanks for nothing!

  He may well have been negotiating in good faith, even asked about the leaks. We don’t know that yet. I wouldn’t care which parties were involved, but it is evident that NZF may have lost votes as a result of the information. Good on Winston for exercising his rights, similar situations like this go back many years – putting them to bed one way or the other would be an obvious help. Arguably it is in the public interest when ‘leaks’ whether true or not impact on the democratic process.

    The leak obviously had an effect on voters but it is important to separate the issue about what was a private matter from the position post election.
    I would suggest that WP did negotiate in good faith as part of the NZ First Party.
    At the time of filing the papers he did not know how the election was going to turn out so it is not right to suggest otherwise.
    The ‘leak’ was a dirty tactic and is the type of behaviour that we don’t need in this country.

  The only policy I agree with is removing urban growth boundaries.
  
  They want to reduce immigration, but increase refugees. So keep out the productive people that help grow the economy (because they don’t tend to vote for hand outs), but increase the people who are dependent on the state (because they do vote for hand outs).

Churchgoers won’t like that. Or perhaps the non-PC churchgoers won’t like that. Some of the others seems as though they would happily let their churches be used as mosques.

The “Queen” is also dropped. Fucking republicans. Jacinderella’s dream is to enthrone Helen Clark as first president of the renamed Republic of Aotearoa.

The next step could be State-mandated, gender-free pronouns.
