Humans are to blame. That’s the verdict of an executive-branch government report … released Nov 3, paints a dire picture of the present and future effects of global climate change, from sea levels that could rise by as much as 2.4m by 2100, to more-frequent heat waves and other extreme weather events.

“Many lines of evidence demonstrate that it is extremely likely that human influence has been the dominant cause of the observed warming since the mid-20th century,” the authors wrote. “Over the last century, there are no convincing alternative explanations supported by the extent of the observational evidence.”

“Global sea level rise has already affected the United States; the incidence of daily tidal flooding is accelerating in more than 25 Atlantic and Gulf Coast cities.”

And things are getting hotter, with annual average temperatures over the contiguous United States increasing by 1 degree Celsius between 1901 and 2016. And over the next few decades, scientists predict those temperatures will rise by about 1.3C relative to the period of 1976 to 2005.

The Climate Science Special Report (CSSR) is based on an analysis of peer-reviewed research, publicly available resources, and certain models and data sets related to climate change … overseen by the U.S. Global Climate Change Research Program, which itself consists of 13 federal agencies that deal with environmental issues, ranging from NASA to the Department of Energy and the Department of State. The group assesses the current state of climate science as part of the National Climate Assessment (NCA) program.

Ultimately, the U.S. Global Climate Change Research Program is under the oversight of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). President Trump has yet to name a head for his administration’s OSTP.

Despite fears by some scientists and environmental advocates, David Fahey of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa) and several authors said there was no political interference or censoring. It is the most comprehensive summary of climate science since 2013, showing a warming, worsening world.

Scientists calculated that human contribution to warming since 1950 is between 92% and 123%. It’s more than 100% on one end, because some natural forces such as volcanoes and orbital cycle are working to cool Earth, but are being overwhelmed by the effects of greenhouse gases, said study co-author Katharine Hayhoe of Texas Tech.

“It shows that if anything the findings of scientists have become more dire” since 2013, said University of California Berkeley climate scientist Zeke Hausfather, who was not part of the work.

    This is not some sceptical website, most articles here are in the alarmist camp. However, a drastic cooling in a few years, such as happened at the onset of the Younger Dryas could be quite catastrophic.       I dont think that means what you think it does.
      The Younger Dryas Was caused by an influx of cold fresh water held back by glacial Ice. When the ice dams collapsed the fresh water hitting the oceans halted the currents that run from the tropics to the poles. What you have highlighted is a slowing down of these currents as the poles warm faster than the tropics . Our weather is a heat engine. As the globe warms it will change currents and alter local whether patterns hence we talk of climate change .
      
      We also have a warm current in New Zealand called the east Auckland current,
      It is what makes the poor nights island so unique.
      There is a hypothesis that this could also be effected in time.

        Agree that some impact on the thermohaline circulation caused the Younger Dryas. What is not certain is the actual cause. A large number of causes have been suggested, Heinrich events, jökulhlaups, and even comets, and there is some debate on whether it is part of a Dansgaard-Oeschger cycle or some other anomaly.

  The recent, 200 years, rate of increase of CO2 density in the atmosphere is 1000 times that of the fastest able to be adduced from all geological records. This may not lead to warming at all, but it is a fact that there is no point in down ticking, kind people.

Looking forward to seeing more detail of the new government’s forward finances. I am 100% certain that ‘every respected economic commentator’ will be sharpening the pencil and setting up the spreadsheet to prove they were right to describe Mr Joyce’s fiscal hole as ‘pure fiction’.

While at the same time scouring the magical realism section of the bookshelf for justifications. (Hint it will be Mr Peter’s price to be in coalition so Labour was right all along.)

Labour’s finance spokesperson Grant Robertson said today Mr Joyce was actively misleading New Zealanders “in a desperate and disingenuous hit job”. “Every respected economic commentator has come out and said that Labour’s fiscal plan adds up. Labour’s plan has been independently audited, it’s responsible and it allows us to make essential investments in health, housing, education and police.”

        When politicians don’t have clear principles, or when they claim that they do (but really don’t), then the field is ripe for corruption.
        It is human nature to barter and trade. To offer off-the-book deals in turn for favors and special treatment in the future.
        The problem is how to achieve an overall balance between rigidly sticking to the rules on one hand, and bending them totally out of shape to get things done.
        In addition, who are the politicians and bureaucrats serving? The people or themselves? (One good test is to look where people send their children to be educated. Have you ever seen a left-wing politician or union official send their children to state schools?)

Just watched to All Black B side play the All Black C side. What I took from the game is that Nigel Owens is passed it and should retire gracefully. That the rules in Rugby are too complicated. This new one were you can’t kick the ball forward in a ruck is stupid to say the least.

  I don’t think that’s the stupidest rule though. The one that says a player can’t raise his arm above his shoulder when kicking the ball backwards if there are more than 2 opposing players scratching their arses at the time is much more stupid…..
  
  All praise to the referee though, for picking this up. Players shouldn’t be allowed think they can just get away with anything.

I find it very interesting that a failed leader of the Labour Party and serial litigator Andrew Little is now advocating to not build the New one billion dollar prison to house people committing serious crime in NZ. Labour instead wants to reduce our prison numbers by education and reducing the penalties for some crime. Is this going to be another measure to keep Labour in power with notice already for the three strike law to be cancelled and are we about to hear they will give criminals the right to vote again while serving long sentences, will this increase Police numbers to stop what will obviously happen when you tolerate crime.

      Around 70% of adult refugees in NZ are still receiving a benefit as their major income source after 12 years as residents. This is from a MBIE study done about 5 years ago.
      
      I can’t see any reason why this appalling statistic would have improved since then – it’s not like we have been getting a better class of Syrians or other Muslims in the last 3 years.

        Here’s an MBIE report from five years ago that says a third of refugees that arrived in the late nineties had left the country. Got an NZ passport and gone to Oz, I should imagine, where there are much bigger communities of their ethnicity.

    The problem is the immediate family the 600 queue jumpers will need to have with them plus the crime wave and social services expense as these cloth heads are in capable of integrating into a decent society. Makes a flag referendum, that was a $17m subsidy to NZ Post, look like a bargain.

  Not really Council projects always run 100% over budget so the hole will be more like $21 Billion.
  
  So less than half of what will be required will actually be built.
  
  My problem is that we already pay targeted petrol and road user Taxes to sort out infrastructure problems, where has that money gone.
  
  But the best approach would be to sort out the shambles that is Auckland city, starting with Council and CCO’s.

Heard a talk by a Cook Island lady last week around the history of the islands, how the tribal system works and her concern around influence of China.

She said recently they have started pumping in money which the tribal elders don’t want but the Govt is lapping up. Included $64M for a reticulated water system which a year after it went in doesn’t work and free tablets for students.

As she rightly pointed out nothing comes for free and she believes the Govt is going to have to fork out fishing licences to the Chinese as payback.

It begs the question what have our Foreign Affairs people been doing. Seems all focus went on the stupid UN Security seat and forgot about our Pacific neighbours.

To make it worse places where China is sniffing around like the Cook Islands actually are NZ protectorates.

Also a laugh yesterday with Lizzie Marvelly writing yet another sixth form essay and comparing stats from the end of the Labour Govt to the end of the National one. Her figures on unemployment, homelessness and child poverty showed hardly any difference despite Labour’s term ending a huge economic boom and the Nats having to deal with the GFC and earthquakes and finally getting the books back in surplus after a long hard haul.

I was amazed to discover that all these problems didn’t arise with John Key – Helen Clark had them too. Surprise.

  These people are not refugees – they are economic migrants trying it on. They are illegal queue-jumpers who are attempting to emotionally blackmail the Aussies and us to give in to their demands.
  
  Almost all of them (and note, mostly single men) have passed through multiple countries en route to Australia anyone of which could have provided them a safe haven.
  
  Also, many of them are Muslim and have illegally travelled thousands of miles to try to get to Aussie rather than move to Muslim countries just next door.
  
  I see many of them are Iranians, Indians, Kuwaitis – refugees my arse. And the Muslims from Burma can pop up the road to Bangladesh.

So as expected the Australian Prime Minister rejected Jacindas request to take some of the Manus Island Refugees. But it will be interesting to see and hear how the PM got on over NZ’ers being deported from Australia back to NZ because of their criminal ways and how they will be abĺe to spin that rejection after taunting National over their lack of recieving a positive result in the last couple of years.

        Yes Griff, I know you are atheist, and that is your choice.
        We are all hypocrites to a greater or lesser degree. Having been involved in the building trade for most of my life, I was as rough and ready as anyone, and it was only by the grace of God that I was able to hang onto my Faith.
        So despite trying to be true to my beliefs, sometimes the old self re-emerges, and all this does, is make me an ordinary bloke, who falls short of the ideal.
        To be fair though Griff, you started the flame war by attacking my beliefs for no particular reason other than your extreme bigotry.

This is council corruption in my view.

The resource consent should have been denied, based on it breaking the council building rules (which are there for a reason) for no real benefit to anyone apart from the people modifying their house .

Then, the council should have been sued for saying a consent was not required in the first instance.

Ultimately council are abusing the consent process to protect themselves from being sued.

These non-notified consents are being abused in many cases. We had a lawyer explain to us a few years back that a non-notified consent may be granted if it is inconceivable that anyone might complain.

Makes me mad on the neighbours behalf. I hope they go to environment court and get their deserved justice, plus the neighbour having to pay full legal costs!! In a perfect world anyway!

I have finally worked out our poor deluded commie chic.

Remember when little girls would have pretend afternoon teas with miniature cups and saucers. Some times if they were lucky, mother would allow them to pour milk from a tiny jug into their cups.

Ardern is still a little girl in an adults world and everything is new and exciting to her. She sits there smiling and giggling clapping her tiny hands waiting for admirers to bring her gifts.

I dread the day she finds out that the tooth fairy and father Xmas are not real.

The Government is reconsidering contracts for six new charter schools signed before the election.

New Education Minister Chris Hipkins says the National-led Government signed the contracts in the weeks before the election in breach of pre-election conventions.

“This was in clear contravention of pre-election protocols that prohibit one Government committing a future Government in the run-up to an election,” he said in a statement.

“I’ve asked for urgent advice on the status of those contracts and won’t be making any further comment on the matter until I’ve received it.”

All parties in the new Labour-led Government oppose charter schools and Mr Hipkins said anyone involved in establishing a school knew “a change of Government would mean change for them”.

But ACT leader David Seymour – who was responsible for charter schools before the election – said the new schools had already been budgeted for since mid-2016.

“All of that takes time, I don’t feel that the excuse frankly that he’s trying to make cuts water,” he said.

National’s education spokeswoman, Nikki Kaye, said clarity was needed from the Government about what would happen.

“These sponsors have spent time and money securing contracts with the Crown and preparing to open these schools. They deserve better than this,” she said.

Earlier this week Mr Hipkins indicated all existing charter schools would also be reviewed individually to see if they can be integrated into the rest of the education system, or whether they would be shut.

I wonder if Old.Mickey.Blue.Eyes is around, and if so, whether he can tell us whether Jacinda put TransTasman relations at risk when she sat down for lunch with Malcolm:

the tooth fairy is truely hideous in real life, in full noise and full colour ! I have had the mis-fortune to share a meal with her, OMG, it was un-f**ken believable. When she drinks from a glass her teeth hit the glass before she drinks and it clinks. Really off-putting. She also has to chew with her mouth open which reminds me of the scene in star wars episode 4, when our heroes are trapped in the garbage compactor on the death star….the food is trying to get out while the walls are closing in.

Hopefully Malcolm didn’t feel like he was trapped in a garbage compactor!
