US energy secretary faces criticism after describing a girl who told him about the importance of electricity in an African village. Rick Perry has said he thinks using fossil fuels can help prevent sexual assault, sparking criticism from the Sierra Club, which accused Perry of exploiting the struggle of those most affected by climate change.

“… from the standpoint of sexual assault. When the lights are on, when you have light that shines the righteousness, if you will, on those types of acts.”

The Trump administration has been pushing to increase domestic production of fossil fuels for export, with Perry specifically challenging what he calls an inaccurate narrative pushed by environmentalists that fossil fuels are harmful because they contribute to climate change.

On the 2012 presidential campaign trail, Perry called for the Department of Energy to be abolished.

NASA, Department of Education, Department of Energy, Environmental Protection Agency … now all lead by unqualified Trump lackeys, only surpassed in ignorance and stupidity by the “fucking moron” himself.

    Does it ever occur to you that there are a multiplicity of reasons for downticking Horne/Ockham?
    
    I rarely downtick or uptick people, but I certainly downtick Ockham, Pavlietch, and Penny Bright regularly, for the following reasons, most of which revolve around them being cranks:
    
    – regularly getting in first to GD (Horne’s fav), which I found the other day to take a fair bit of effort. You have to hover over the screen re-loading until GD appears. What sort of normal human does that?
    
    – how they “comment” is the equivalent of a rude, bellowing, bastard who just won’t shut up and talks over everyone else all the time. No interaction. No debate, just bellowing.
    
    – long screeds most of the time. Save the scroll-wheels.
    
    – endless repetitive use of the same links and self-referrals.
    
    – boring, with the same stuff and theme repeated every fucking comment.
    
    In Horne’s case no doubt there is the AGW aspect and in that case my downtick does not reflect a “rejection” of the basic science, which I well understand, but the apocalyptic predictions derived there from, combined with the screaming-skull demands that we do what nutters like Horne tell us to do – an end to fossil fuels and go totally renewable energy, right the fuck now, basically.
    
    I’m just not interested in conversing with cranks like that. Sure, there are other cranks here, but they don’t fulfill those other conditions. I just ignore them basically.

        How about what the IPCC say in Assessment Review 5 done by 600 scientists?
        Even the IPCC doesn’t think Anthropogenic influences are a MAJOR cause of climate change.
        Here’s a quote from WG1 in AR5
        ‘The IPCC AR5 notes the lack of warming since 1998:
        [T]he rate of warming over the past 15 years (1998–2012) [is] 0.05 [–0.05 to +0.15] °C per decade)which is smaller than the rate calculated since 1951 (1951–2012) [of] 0.12 [0.08 to 0.14] °C per decade.’
        
        Yes, the last two years have been hot – Octobers numbers will be high, but we have had an El Niño(just like in 1998)
        The sea is cooling and the Troposphere will follow.
        Here’s comment from Prof Judith Curry summarising AR5 Working Group
        (Note, don’t quote the SPMs to me- they aren’t prepared by scientists)
        ‘Lack of warming since 1998 and growing discrepancies with climate model projections
        Evidence of decreased climate sensitivity to increases in CO2
        Evidence that sea level rise in 1920-1950 is of the same magnitude as in 1993-2012
        Increasing Antarctic sea ice extent
        Low confidence in attributing extreme weather events to anthropogenic global warming .’
        
        Sure, we have just had several major hurricanes but then last serious ones to make landfall was in 2006

        Climate Sensitivity is the nub of the issue.
        Again Judith Curry looking at AR5
        ‘The IPCC AR5 conclusion on climate sensitivity is stated as:
        
        Equilibrium climate sensitivity is likely in the range 1.5°C to 4.5°C (high confidence), extremely unlikely less than 1°C (high confidence), and very unlikely greater than 6°C (medium confidence)
        
        It is significant that the AR5 does not cite a best estimate, whereas the AR4 cites a best estimate of 3oC. The stated reason for not including a best estimate in the AR5 is the substantial discrepancy between observation-based estimates of ECS (lower), versus estimates from climate models (higher). Figure 1 of Box 12.2 in the AR5 WG1 report shows that 11 out of 19 observational-based studies of ECS show values below 1.5oC in their ‘ranges of ECS probability distribution.’

Where are all the economists that were very willing to jump in and voice their support for Labour’s promises of spending that they released during the Election. These same experts are missing in action when it comes to costing and holding Jacinda, Winston and James to the same standards they expected Stephen Joyce to stand up to and seem to have just given the Coalition from he’ll a free pass in what ever they decide. So can anyone please explain how giving Free University fees and a extra $50 a week in their allowance is going to help the poor with more than 60% of students coming from wealthy families.

The theory is that property owners who gain property value increases from developments and renewed infrastructure will pay more rates. Obviously based on an assumption that property prices will continue to rise. This pops out as prices flatten and even ease to some extent so raises the question if a rate reduction will also be included for a shrinking equity?

    Sploogie this is wrong if you visit the RBNZ’s website you will find nominal debt barely changed under Clark & Cullen at about $32b, they just used trick accounting to include the Cullen fund and ACC’s reserves as assets in the net position, both are technically “escrow accounts” that are future liabilities, not really assets. Can you really argued the ballooning of nominal debt between 2007 and 2010 had anything to do with National, it was Labour’s expensive policies that were not priced over the entirety of the business cycle.
    
    As for the Cullen fund, when National stopped adding to it in 2009 we had put something like $9.3b in to it and it was worth significantly less. Management was hiding behind annual contributions to mask under performance. I worked out in 2011 that had we originally put the $ into gold & oil at that stage it would have been worth a lot more.

        Well said Sylands and it’s a pity that Splooge won’t accept that the 1990-1999 National Govt (just like the 2008-2017 National Govt) laid the foundations for economic growth for the incoming 1999 Labour Govt (just like National have done again for the incoming 2017 Labour Govt).
        
        We can predict that if the 1999-2008 Labour Govt tanked the economy in the end by overspending, well not only can we expect the 2017 Labour Govt to do the same (because the entire COL have the chequebooks out and are embarking on billions of new spending), then I suspect they will tank the economy after 3 years (not 9 under Clark and Cullen)!
        
        This seems to be the pattern but Lefties like Splooge see the complete opposite!

  In education it applies from early childhood up and in health, for example, it applies from community nurse aides to salaried doctors.
  I recently had a set-to with a GP that I otherwise admire. He does not understand that the Government has NO money of its own. It only has the money that it steals from us. Personally I do not feel like subsiding his latest model Range Rover and his doctor wife’s near new Audi Q7.
  The effing teachers and medicos would have more credibility if a smaller % of state funding were to be allocated to salaries. But what is the most recent demand? 8% or more ? And then we get to free tertiary education where the bottom is about to be removed from the bucket…….

“I’m not knocking the aspirations of the KiwiBuild scheme, or out to criticise the approach. But I’m suggesting the new Government needs to be made aware of the challenges of dealing with the Auckland Council’s consenting regime, especially when we compare it to some of the other local authorities around New Zealand,” he said.

Twyford has said that KiwiBuild can be achieved, is a $2b scheme, he has had extensive discussions with industry leaders and is confident of its success.

        I first became involved in housing debates in that year when I was a researcher at London think tank Policy Exchange. I remember very well how difficult it was to put a figure to housing affordability which is also internationally comparable.
        
        Demographia’s ‘median multiple’ approach closed this gap. It firmly established a benchmark for housing affordability by linking median house prices to median household incomes. It is as simple as it is ingenious. And it is probably the index I have cited most often in my career.
        
        The ‘median multiple’ is not a perfect measure because it does not account for house sizes or build quality. But it is the only index that allows a quick comparison of different housing markets, and it is the best approximation of housing affordability measures we have to date.

    You need to get over 50% of the vote or if you fall short you need to form a coalition with another party.
    National fell short and no one wanted to be their coalition partner because they had burnt all their bridges.
    Labour on the other hand were smart enough not to and successfully formed a coalition.

        I don’t. I think Labour and New Zealand First’s economic views and values are very similar, and it was just easier to align them than it was for National to do so. So I don’t think Labour was desperate, although they were hungry after nine years out of power. But it was always going to be easier for them to find common ground with Winston than it was for National. Both Labour and New Zealand First are opposed to neo-liberalism, and both wanted a change of direction.
        
        I also don’t understand why anyone at all thought Winston was ever going to go with National. His campaign slogan of ‘had enough?’ was obviously aimed at National’s governance, and National, in a fit of stupidity, went out of their way to antagonise Winston. It was certainly obvious to me that he would go left not right. So while I don’t endorse splooge’s snark at National, they ran a good campaign and had a valid reason to celebrate their share of the vote, especially after three terms, he is right that at the end of the day, National and it’s support partners lost, because they could not command a majority. The change parties could.

        Sorry Treading. But I don’t think it’s that clear cut.
        Labour were desperate. Ardern et al just caved into everything NZF wanted.
        Also the Nats policies are also close to NZFs in many areas. Id wager more than a few NZF voters were Nat supporters who saw NZF as a way to force Nats to do more things- RMA reform for example.
        Even within NZF there are both Lab and Nat leaning factions.
        So you can’t say NZF leans more to Lab. It was about the positions. Labour were more generous and National missed out.
        It’s becoming clear that cracks are already starting to appear between NZF, Lab and the Greens over a number of issues.
        Defence, Kermadec, Collective Agreements etc

  Three things struck me when I read that article about Phil Twyford:
  
  1) Labour may finally be beginning to understand the laws of supply and demand.
  
  2) How did they not know this stuff already? It’s not like it’s a secret, and they could have been making OIA requests for any useful information that wasn’t public. You have to ask yourself what on earth they were actually doing while in opposition.
  
  3) Now that they’re in power, they may finally be realising that you can’t just wave a magic wand and all these houses get magically built. Twyford’s already backtracking on how quickly they can build houses.

So confused. What is left and what is right. Phil Twyford stealing Act policies and is now calling for abolition of the Rural/urban boundary in Auckland!. Auckland Council under Labour mayors has just lead the city, at huge expense through the unitary plan process. But now he wants’ to change the game. And wants to fix ” the highly restrictive planning rules like the urban growth boundary.” ? Those planners and massive bureacracy at Auckland Council are run by your peeps Phil! Great idea streamlining the planning process but why aren’t labour already onto it. We’ve just been through the Unitary Plan process which was an enormous expense to council and the public who hired lawyers . But now he wants to change the planning rules. That’s fine but he just opens his mouth and lets out brain farts when the reality is that Labour has been inextricably linked to the existing planning in Auckland. Twyford is shaping up to be my least favourite mp. What does labour even stand for now.

    Labour are in Government because some voters thought Jacinda was a nice person. Many of those people are now realising that you cant have Jacinda without Labour policies. Twyford now saying that the 10c per litre fuel tax will contribute 1.5 billion to the light rail project but he needs an additional 6 Billion from a targeted rate on properties close to the rail which will get a value boost from it. Aucklanders will hate that and I don’t imagine Phil Goff can support it either.
    Lots of examples of this sort of thing. Parents like National Standards and wont like them going.
    Labours IR policies were not tested in the election because of the Jacinda effect but they will be in the house.
    It turns out those Policemen and Trees aren’t extra at all.
    Phil isn’t actually going to build houses he is going to help developers get finance by agreeing to buy the houses they were going to build anyway.
    On 1 April voters are going to be reminded they had their $1,000 tax cut revoked so kids could get a free year at University to get a degree in beer drinking.
    There is so much material for the Nats to work with they wont know where to start and this is before the newbie ministers even start to screw up and the parties in the CoL start to scrap among themselves.

      You are dealing with many people here who have their analysis and recommendations tested in their professional lives. If a client critiques my analysis, I can’t just repeat it, loudly, or resort to platitudes. Or worse, call them delusional morons. I’d be out of business.

  No but given that Little outlived Hagaman he should consider himself lucky.
  The Judge decided that because Hagaman was no longer here to front the allegations that allowed that no defamation existed.
  
  That of course doesn’t make the allegation not true but absolves Little from his responsibility.

Now here is an interesting story with a twist of fate and history.
Many years ago there was a commune on the Wanganui river.
Started by Nuns and frequented by many including James K Baxter. (grubby bugger he was.)
Part of the history of the commune was that the Nuns had gardens and were known for the medicinal properties of one of the herbs they grew. That plant was promoted by them as a cure for some things. It was marijuana in a less potent form than today.

What is intriguing about this is that today we have many who want this herb reinstated as a medicinal product. (rightly imho).

Now a Nun from Wellington has been proposed to Rome to become a Saint.

Did she have a foresight that should have become mainstream?

Suzanne Aubert’s chances of becoming New Zealand’s first Saint could hang on whether or not it can be proven she performed a medical ‘miracle’ unexplained by doctors.

The road to official recognition is a long one, requiring reports, citations of witnesses, a biography, medical records and medical studies of people cured.

Aubert was widely-known in Wellington for her work with the sick and the poor, as well as with people from all cultures and religious beliefs.

While there is no apparent connection between the two “wives tales” would have it otherwise.

And remember back in those early days there were few doctors and even less drug companies. There were few roads around the country and people were used to alternative medicine.

Another example if you like is Manuka honey. Plenty of old bushmen knew about that. Even I did as a young person. Didn’t know why but it worked.

Much and all as I don’t care for the religious bruha of this I find it interesting that the use of alternative medicine could be recognized in Rome.

I guess the Pope needs a new way to raise cash. He will be competing with the govt. though.

Liarbor promised a myriad of law changes in the first 100 days in office. The 100 days will be up on 3 February so Parliament will work up to within a few days of the Christmas break to ram all these new, expensive laws through.
