The Non-Scientist Trump Chose for USDA Chief Scientist Is Now a ‘Cooperative Witness’ in Russia Probe
UPDATE: The White House announced Thursday that Sam Clovis has withdrawn himself from consideration for the position of USDA [Agriculture] chief scientist amid reports of his role in the Trump campaign’s communications with Russian officials.

As a non-scientist, he failed to meet the most basic legal qualifications to serve as the chief scientist at the USDA. His rejection of mainstream climate science—critical to the future of agriculture and the livelihood of farmers—and his history of racist and homophobic comments further disqualified him.

We look to the USDA as an authoritative source of scientific, economic, and statistical information about the nation’s food system, and it seemed extremely careless to put all that into the hands of an unqualified person.

Winning. So much winning. We’re going to get tired of winning.

  Robert Mueller might find and prosecute any number of technical illegalities on the part of Trump team personnel, like mistakes in tax returns, in the course of this partisan witch-hunt – but regardless of the absence of actual evidence of any kind at any stage, we can expect the Left to trumpet “proof of collusion with Russia” every time one of the team gets pinged on totally unrelated issues.

Together, the comments in Steyn’s book suggest that even in the midst of a great social hysteria like AGW much of the field of climatology is functioning more or less normally. Also, one finds the usual range of opinion that one finds in any science, although in this case it is somewhat muted, in part because of the possibility of intimidation from the more enthusiastic warmists and their followers…”

  Wait for the abuse, its coming. I’ll read the whole article later but its very good judging by the bits I have read so far. I have always stated that I am neither a denier, nor an alarmist. It is the outcomes of robust debate, good scientific methodology and a lack of political interference that must be considered. Not a particular set of beliefs or a predetermined outcome. Unfortunately the IPCC has been guilty of this and they have stifled the scientific process.

      Professor Salby’s employment was not terminated in any way related to his views on climate science, but rather due to misconduct in two areas. The first was his repeated refusal to teach, over a sustained period of time, in contravention of his contract of employment.
      
      The second reason was inappropriate use of University resources. Professor Salby travelled to Europe during a time when he was obliged to be at the University against direct, written instruction. Furthermore he used a University credit card to pay for the flights through an unapproved agency. This is against University policy.

In 2007, Salby was on sabbatical in Australia. Before the university made its final adjudication, Salby resigned from his faculty position. The National Science Foundation investigation report issued on 20 February 2009 found that Salby had overcharged his grants and violated financial conflict of interest policies, displaying “a pattern of deception, a lack of integrity, and a persistent and intentional disregard of NSF and University rules and policies” and a “consistent willingness to violate rules and regulations, whether federal or local, for his personal benefit.” It debarred Salby from receiving federal assistance and benefits until 13 August 2012

    The IPCC were created for political purposes. The summaries for policy makers are put together by policymakers. However there are some scientists involved and in the 1000+ page assessment reports which follow the “summaries” a year later they explicitly deny they are capable of determining climate changes.

        Elementary maths is sufficient to question the validity of climate change models and data handling.
        Commonsense says follow the money– its not hard to become sceptical. Deceitful emails don’t give respect either. The IPCC buries its truth in the midst of a 1000+ page report and has lay politicians prepare summaries a year prior as a basis for action.
        
        What is actually going on? Sea levels are not dropping on satellite observations. Measurements give stable temperatures over the past 20 years as the El Niño returns to base. The sun has lost its spots. Some scientists are predicting we have entered a prolonged colder downturn. Everybody else is lining up to take or pay for ETS credits and shutting down options to protect against such a possibility.

  I didn’t watch the video, but I did read his Wikipedia page to check out his views. Speaking as someone who is very liberal on social issues, pro-feminist and pro-gay rights, I thought his criticisms of hardcore political correctness and post-modern political thinking were reasonable and valid. But I wonder how many of the hardcore pro-white, Christian conservatives on Kiwiblog would recognise that his criticisms would apply to them as well.

Dear Abby,

I am soooooooooooooooooooo disappointed and demand a safe space to deal with this distress!

The Aotearoa Socialist Collection of Losers has been a sworn government for ten days and we still have poverdy, homleslessness, charter schools, a Reserve Bank, fireworks, suicides, inequality, a gender gap (whatever that is but I don’t have one so am disadvantaged) hospital waiting lists, people living in cars, obese people (as shown by those PI’s displaying the passion, read violence, for their league teams), those who can only have one overseas holiday a year . . . .

What I don’t seem to have is Campbell, the declining chip wrappers and Red radio reminding me on a daily basis what a terrible uncaring and soulless place New Zealand is! Without these impartial bastions of reporting, what hope is there that I can understand what a shitty place New Zealand is to live?

  I am freehold with a rental and vehicles, boats caravan etc. Some things will cost me more such as no Tax break and no Super increase, petrol for all. On the other hand I will move my investments to whoever is paying the most.

After watching a little of the interview with Julie Anne Genter yesterday I am now firmly of the conclusion that Cindy has a lot to fear from the Greens not the National opposition.
I thought that she has appeared to be an intelligent considered MP but now that she has close to the Foreman’s job she appears to be a harridan who is going to stop at nothing to attempt to get her own way. A real feminista.
I am not enamoured in her American accent telling us how we are to lead our lives.
Is she a lesbian ? – does anybody know, but she gave that appearance from what she extolled.
Cindy – the Greens will be your worst nightmare.

  I believe Julie Ann Genter is the hetero partner of one of NZ’s most active economists in the field of urban economics – the poor guy is guilty of work after work that is absolutely riddled with nonsense in attempts to justify and exonerate urban planning over the myriads of economic sabotage and social injustice for which it is patently responsible. Latest story doing the rounds. Winston Peters that paragon of truth, trust, and honesty ,walked into a room full of his once loyal over 65s Gold Card supporters most of them on fixed income superannuation payments.
They were still recovering from the shock on how Peters had betrayed their trust,and how anytime soon he would also be voting against the small Super increase as promised by the Bill English and National. The very increases Peters had helped pass into legislation.
The room by this time ,with Peters arrival had gone very quiet. Even a pin dropping would have sounded out of place ,with the deathly silence.
Peters said to his betrayed once loyal elderly supporters.
“Dont you know who i am”. Someone piped up and said.

The road toll continues to climb in the face of the success of the policing authorities successful focus on gathering revenue and average speed reductions. A skeptic might be starting to believe the real problems mostly lie in things other than speed – like sheer incompetence behind the wheel, which nothing is being done about. The most incompetent and inconsiderate people are also the most insufferably self-righteous – “because I drive slow, I am totally above all possibility of having to consider being any part of the problem”.

  Or like the car I followed along the Hamilton expressway. The car covered in company signage promoting “green” lifestyle products. The driver was on the phone in the fast lane passing heavy trucks, and then he physically turned to search the back seat while attempting to access what he needed for the call!
  He finally moved into the left lane between the 2 trucks so I was able to move away from him and his driving contortions.

  I’d be interested to know if anyone is aware of stats showing what proportion of road toll deaths involve drivers or passengers who were not wearing a seat belt.
  
  Ministry of Transport stats for high-risk drivers mentions various forms of high-risk behaviour (e.g. alcohol, repeat speed offenders, evading enforcement, etc) but I can’t find anything for those not wearing seat belts.

  I would like to know the ratio of deaths to the number of vehicles on the roads. We are told constantly of the massive increase in vehicles on our roads each year. It’s not rocket science to assume the more cars on the roads, the more accidents, the more deaths. Or is there something we are not being told.

Where we need to bring in immigrants to build the houses we need to build to house the people who can’t buy houses because there are too many immigrants which means that people are homeless so we have to reduce the number of immigrants so the homes aren’t built for the people who can’t afford them so need to go into social housing which isn’t being replaced because the immigrants we need to build new social housing and repair existing ones aren’t coming into the country to build the houses we need to house the poor people in need and the refugees that are also coming who might build houses but more likely go to the front of the queue for the social housing we have that have already been built by the immigrants that aren’t coming here……

  Australia will not agree to us taking the Manus Island refugees unless the US agree to take the 1200, in all, refugees in the islands. That currently will not happen.
  I would expect that should the Green’s insist that we take the 150 plus they will tantrum otherwise.
  Should that happen Australia will bring in immediate legislation to cancel automatic rights of entry to New Zealanders, and that visas before take off, will be required.

  She’s under intense pressure – a lot of it self-imposed – and it’s still the honeymoon period.
  
  Just wait for another few months when she is confronted with some big problems especially when some of their plans start to backfire, her partners start to flex their muscles, poor performing or misbehaving minsters get exposed, and the promised utopia doesn’t materialise (and as surely as the sun rises, it won’t).
  
  Then we’ll see whether she, and the Lab caucus, is or isn’t up to it.
  
  My pick? She, and Labour, is in dangerous territory right from the get go. They are unproven. Most of the caucus have never been accountable for the delivery or achievement of anything in their lives. Some will buckle – it’s just a question of when.

    Sorry, but if, she is a prime example of what came out of Morrinsville College (circa 20 years ago) & read a for a degree in communications (whatever that is). In the press conference with Turnbull she demonstrated English was not one of her strong subjects at school. Further, her grasp of logic allows for only black or white (overdone use of the words absolutely and perfectly). She’ll be a great negotiator not!

Many will never pay tax, and after their huge initial education and settlement costs will continue to cost us another $20k+ per year (plus higher imprisonment costs for some) until they are dead in 40-70years, plus bringing in all their similarly useless relatives who don’t want to integrate either. Just the houses to put them in will cost $200k per head at today’s building costs.

    There is some force in that argument but…….
    While the Australian Constitution is indeed an Act of the UK Westminster Parliament, As far as I can see, the Bill was drafted by representatives of the Australian states and possibly New Zealand (as NZ was part of the Federation negotiations until NZ decided to pull out) and Westminster enacted it at the Australian States’ request presumably with nil or insignificant amendment.
    The HCA’s judgment [2017]HCA45 (Googling that citation will find it) considered the drafting history of the Constitution and interpreted it at enactment date (1900) but did not seem to interpret it in the light of changing circumstances over the years. Arguably this is judicial inactivism.
    It seems to me that the Constitution was either ignored or not enforced with regard to S44 over the years.
    A few days ago I posted this on the old fashioned newsgroup aus.legal :
    “Stephen had a pommie father so was also a UK citizen by descent and has had to resign. I cannot believe it – it is 117 years since Federation and this sort of thing is only now coming to light. I cannot believe Stephen is so thick that he had no idea he was eligible for a UK passport (or a UK patriality stamp in his Australian passport) – many young people in Australia, NZ and other nations who took an interest in things and aspired to working holidays in UK would be fully aware of the situation. One would have thought it would have been a big issue when the first federal Parliament was formed since a significant number of candidates would surely have had dual foreign citizenships, perhaps no one saw it as an issue then.
    With regard to Stephen’s case – New Zealand’s then Prime Minister Rob Muldoon said some years ago that the exodus of New Zealanders going to Australia would raise the average IQ’s of the people of both nations. I think he was spot on seeing how this debacle has developed. “

The confidence in the market there is amazing. They are booming.

Europe is booming.

US unemployment down to its lowest levels in 17 years.

The latest earnings reports have been stellar.

The industrial stocks are killing it!!!

A huge turn around.. and yet we have labours bitch, winston, telling us the world is going to hell, our economy is going to tank and its all nationals fault?!?! something doesnt add up!

  Boom are often followed by busts. I don’t know if Winston was right or not, but he was just repeating the concerns of other economists. Stock market booms in particular are not always a reliable indication of sustainable economic growth.

Computers are the main players with about 90% of the transactions self generated. Who gets the order is being measured now by who has fastest direct access to the computer in charge.       I hope so. It’s the US economy finally catching up on the recovery that should have, and could have happened after 2009 when the last recession ended. So perhaps the conventional wisdom is wrong about a US recession every ten years (roughly).
      
      On the other hand the DJ P/E ratio is 31. As a I recall it’s only been like that twice before – late 1920’s and late 2000’s!
      
      I’d prefer a few years more of solid earnings growth and stock prices increasing only a little before I can feel happy about this. But I also recognise that years of pitifully low interest rates on savings and other “safe” investments have pushed people more towards stocks.

        The USA is a whole lot of disparate State economies just as much as Europe is. What is driving the “US economy” in real growth, is the southern and heartland States with no greenie red tape, less labour-law red tape, highly affordable urban land and property, resource extraction, re-onshoring of industry, etc etc.
        
        The libbewwal coastal states are fake bubble and bust economies.
        
        Then there are the rust belt cities which however are experiencing slow real recoveries.
        
        No-one is really doing proper analytical work dis-aggregating these quite different economy types within the US whole.
        
        I have been warning for a long time, that nations whose entire property market and “resource management” culture “is” California, are going to have busts coming their way far worse than “the US economy” which has some zones of social and economic sanity to anchor the whole.

  I believe you are seeing the tail end of a market before the crash becomes apparent. The smartest money will have gone.
  The FED has pumped in so much money to ease the 2008 crash that they do not know how to pull back. There is no precedent for the present situation. Ultra low or even negative interest rates cannot continue–how can savers be rewarded?
  Computers now play against each in the bulk of the “trades”.

I see Angry and the Pike River Mine next of kin are milking the re-entry for everything it’s worth.

It was a tragedy but I am not convinced that some of the miners were squeaky clean concerning safety practices…. this could have contributed to the explosion.

Unlike the poor buggers in Christchurch who were going about their lawful business and killed during the building collapses when the 2011 earthquake struck. Not their fault and their next of kin have not been looked after as much as the miners.

When you compare the two tragedies some folk have class whereas others are just plain greedy.

They are now saying that the rise is co2 levels is getting dangerous, and its now the highest its ever been.

And that in 100 years sea levels “may” rise by 20cm.

Yet we (mankind) has been pouring co2 into the air since the industrial revolution and more and more with population growth, more cars etc. Yet I do not see any rise in temperatures, or in sea levels, they say a few mm!

And if they show that Kiribati island on tv again I will shoot the tv.

Its still there!, and its probably being eroded by the sea. Erosion happens!

Can anyone explain to me why only the new Partnership Schools (Vanguard et al) are considered partnership schools. Steiner Schools are funded by MOE. Why isn’t it part of the Partnership school discussion. What about the religious schools.?

  Because by far the largest proportion of state integrated schools are Catholic and 11% of Kiwis are practising Catholics. Those numbers are growing courtesy of immigration from the Philippines, Vietnam and Cambodia. It would be a foolhardy party that cracked down on the Catholic church in NZ. There will also be influential Catholic MPs in the ruling regime. I have no idea who they are.

    Maggy, my interest sparked by your 9.15 post, I read on Wikipedia that the Nazis closed Steiner (Waldorf) schools in Germany. The Nazis attacked his philosophy, and even called him a Jew (he wasn’t).
    
    Are you sure that these schools are racist (though it seems his philosophy, anthroposophy – a load of codswallop – was)? This is from another Wikipedia entry (on anthroposophy):
    
    The schools have been founded in a variety of communities: for example in the favelas of São Paulo to wealthy suburbs of major cities; in India, Egypt, Australia, the Netherlands, Mexico and South Africa. Though most of the early Waldorf schools were teacher-founded, the schools today are usually initiated and later supported by a parent community.
    
    I didn’t go to a private school, but from what I have heard of Steiner and Montessori schools, I would have enjoyed either of them more than the State schools where there were too many cane-swinging adults I wish I could go back in time and thump.
    
    Steiner seems also to have been involved with Freemasonry. Good luck if Dame Devoid should take on investigating Masons, too (I wonder whether they have race rules)?
    
    However, I presume you are “speaking” tongue in cheek when you suggest Devoid should look at racial aspects of Steiner education. To be balanced, she would have also to investigate Muslim schools and even Te Reo nests.

        Given the high number of Nobel Prize winners who are Jewish, my guess is that most Jewish education would be bloody good.

Hi all –

I have just written to the Aussie Embassy asking them to pass on my HUGE thanks to Aussie PM Turnbull for his refusal of Taxcinda’s request for 150 Manus Island fakeugees to come to New Zealand.

I said to them – “at LAST there is a world leader prepared to stand up for the rights of New Zealanders! What a pity that it is not our OWN leader!”

We do NOT want these troublemakers and bludgers in our country. Thank goodness that at least *Turnbull* has some brains.

I would encourage all others who think similarly to send a thank-you email to them too. “Let’s do this!” 😉
