Apparently Assange is not even wanted for allegations of rape, as previously reported, but for something called “sex by surprise,” which is said involves a fine of 5,000 kronor or about $715.

“Sex by surprise” hmm, wonder what that is?

More Claytons revelations in Australia.

The cables also suggested union bosses held “powerful sway” over Labour ministers and had “disproportionate influence” over the government.

Tony Abbott said the cables demonstrated unions were in charge. “You’ve got union officials boasting about the fact that they’re effectively running the government and you’ve got senior members of parliament conceding that this is correct.”

Just as well that sort of thing doesn’t happen here.

Labour president Andrew Little, who heads the EPMU, said Mr Hawkins had made it clear to others, but not to him, that he was opposed to Mr Mika’s candidacy.

Mr Little had avoided endorsing any of the seven candidates in a “somewhat tense selection” because Mr Mika was an EPMU employee. The candidate selection meeting would be held tomorrow.

An interesting sidelight of the Wikileaks material, in terms of Australia, is written about here:

Kevin Rudd was an abrasive, impulsive control freak as prime minister who was obsessed with managing the media cycle at the expense of collaborative decision-making.

The writer goes on to point out that none of this is news, at least to readers of The Australian, because they gained this knowledge from talking to public servants, politicians and diplomats – which is exactly what junior staff at the US embassy did. However, other papers have only just now published this sort of information as a result of “gleaning” it from the US diplomatic cables on Wikileaks.

The writer twists the knife a little:

ABC presenter Barrie Cassidy, who as recently as February accused this newspaper of running an ideologically inspired campaign against Mr Rudd, could not have been more surprised. “You have to hand it to the Americans,” he wrote on the ABC’s website The Drum. “They were on to Kevin Rudd long before most of his colleagues and most of the media.”

…and then a lot:

The excitement generated by WikiLeaks reveals the cargo-cult approach to journalism adopted by some in the Canberra press gallery. Rather than forensically pursuing the Rudd government, there was a tendency to rely on press releases and briefings. If they had done a better reporting job back then, they might not now be so awed by the cables that describe a narrative this newspaper reported over several years.

More to the point, the narrative that Rudd would be a superior PM to Howard because of all the qualities adored by left-wing journalists, could not be disrupted.

More from Australia…. Seems the Greens are trying to run the country into the ground with legislation and costly idiotic policy over there too, just as they have tried and continue to do so here.

TREASURY secretary Ken Henry has delivered a damning assessment of the state of policymaking and claims Treasury Department resources are under severe stress.

This is as a result of the demands from independents and the Greens.

Dr Henry told a private gathering of senior ex-Treasury officials of his immense frustrations, describing the past year as one of the worst – if not the worst – in the department’s history and predicting next year would be “awful” because of the hung parliament.

In what attendees described as a downbeat and depressing speech, Dr Henry said Treasury was now at the beck and call of the independents and Greens, creating a huge strain on the capacity of the department.

He did not complain about the policies of the Labor government or the opposition but is understood to have darkly joked to colleagues that Treasury did not have a big enough computer to cost the policies of the Greens.

“For a guy who’s very ‘green’ himself and always off saving the hairy-nosed wombat, he is not very sympathetic to the Greens as a party,” one attendee said.

Ralph Norris, Kiwi former chief of ASB Bank, is Australia’s highest paid executive, reports the Wall Street Journal . As chief executive of Commonwealth Bank of Australia he’s being paid more than 16 million Australian dollars a year – that’s about 20 million Kiwi.

The newspaper says that five of Australia’s ten highest paid people works for banks.

Norris, part-Maori, is a top operator and a very decent bloke, but the newspaper seems peeved that he gets millions more than the heads of the Rio Tinto and BHP, the two big mining companies that are driving the Aussie boom.

Let’s hope Norris brings his savings back to NZ when he tires of the Aussie rat race.

Meanwhile, a 3News poll last night suggested much of the public has not accepted the McPhail report. Voters were asked whether Mrs Wong should resign from Parliament and 55 per cent said yes, 40 per cent said no and 5 per cent didn’t know.

No, the reporter is suggesting that (or repeating another suggester), not the poll.

The poll doesn’t say why they think she should resign. It could be because they think she’s done too much wrong, they are sick of hearing about her on the tellie, because she looks different to a normal New Zealander, because she’s with National, because she’s a she, some may suspect she’s just another lesbian politician, and there could even be some who don’t like the dress they saw her wearing.

Oh, and maybe one or two are familiar with the McPhail report. And 5% are right?

I think the “sex by surprise” is regarding an allegation of sex at least initiated by Assange while she was asleep.

And for those who are a bit confused, there was no threesome involved.

I also think its important not to get too carried away about political aspects of the case. Allegations have been made, and having a high profile does not automatically imply innocence.

Now let’s hope he can get it all cleared up quickly, and that justice is done, and he gets back to doing what he does best – keeping us informed and making himself a lot of money. This guy should be a free marketeers hero!

Anger at ‘slave trader’ Assange: WikiLeaks loyalists decide to break away

A number of WikiLeaks defectors, including founder Julian Assange’s former right-hand man, plan to launch a rival site on Monday after accusing Mr Assange of behaving like “some kind of emperor or slave trader”.

The new site, Openleaks, will launch on Monday, respected Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter reported. Like WikiLeaks, it will allow whistleblowers to leak information to the public anonymously. However, Openleaks won’t host the documents itself, instead acting as an intermediary between whistleblowers and other groups including media organisations.

They may manage better if they keep their pants on. Or at least the condoms.

Dad’s rhetoric is pretty extreme even by baiter’s standards, but dad at least is not shy to put up his background and the real-world reasons why he is on the journey he is on. I don’t think what he does is very sensible, but you can have some compassion for what made him the crank he is.

Whereas with baiter, you’re just reading a bot parrotting whatever was on Ann Coulter a couple of hours ago, stripped of whatever (precious little) balance understanding or humanity she may have sprinkled it with.

Its interesting for historical perspective and curiosity reason only. But by following or doing the egyptian method is not going to make one proficient in mathematics. I would stick to teaching standard algorithm of multiplication and also long division to students. WHY? These 2 can take anyone from beginning mathematics up to the highest level. For example, the (polynomial) long division is used in (numeric) approximation such as described by this guy here (graham schmidt identity).

kaya, it’s a tragedy and relevant to me also that the video slams the regulators and the bankers but doesn’t criticise the strategy which bought the Celtic Tiger to riches in the first place.

That strategy was sound and to this day remains so. Ireland’s problems stemmed from post-strategy mis-management, nothing to do with the strategy itself.

That comment he made could equally apply to every Western nation in the entire world and you know what it demarcates? The difference between the average IQ of people in Western nations vs people in Asian nations who today’s evidence suggests don’t appear to have been affected very much at all.

There’s one reason for that. We’re collectively led by the nose by self-interested wankers who care only about their own re-elections (let the good times roll) and we are collectively prepared to go with that. At this moment Asians collectively refuse to be led like that because collectively, they know better.

They will change as money corrupts them. It’s already started. Pretty soon your average bank exec in Shanghai will be earning what your average bank exec earns in NY. This is not a good thing, but it will happen and when it starts in Asia, watch their treasured traditions like looking after their elderly parents walk out the door.
