“Immigration and tax breaks for investment in residential property are being cited as the underlying causes of steep increases in the cost of housing over the past decade.

New Zealand now boasts one of the highest rates of home unaffordability in the world as a result of prices rising far faster than incomes, and the government’s Savings Working Group blames that squarely on the policies of successive governments.

Although “the favourable tax treatment of property investment” accounted for about 50% of house price increases between 2001 and 2007, the working group said, there was also strong evidence that rapid swings in immigration brought about price-rise “shocks”.

They have been abandoned by society starboard. They are the product of a failed capitalist society in which the rich grow richer and the poor feed off their crumbs if they are lucky. A society where out of season vegetables are too expensive and the marginalised and unemployed poor cannot afford the price of a fork and trowel to sow a vege garden. A society where Sky TV has nothing for them to watch and the price of petrol has gone through the roof, and yet they cannot afford to walk anywhere because of the additional wear and tear on their basketball trainers. Where they cannot afford caps with two peaks to protect both their necks and their faces from the sun. A socety that has not only spurned them, but actually discriminates against them because they forgot to learn anything at school. A society of such oppression it is akin to a yoke across their backs. A society that steals the sweat from their brows and the hope from their hearts.

Sorry, who are we talking about here? The people that pay their own way and then a lot more that actually pays for this country to operate, or those that don’t? Including those getting WFF.

And would you just care to run those opportunity tax cost numbers on capital gains past us? Even the numbers provided by your sad-arse mates make it clear that CGT is not a a mega revenue earner. Its income tax and GST that pays the bills. Would it be fair to assume that you pay fuck all, if any?

So National cares about landlords. That’s why they canned depreciation deductions and LAQC regime. To benefit landlords right?

The Greens see no risks, despite the loss of quality of life etc all ready observed by Rod Oram (for example).

What I understand is that asset inflation isn’t wealth creation; it simply creates a charge elsewhere in the economy. So the people (including landlords) who pay too much for a property don’t have funds available to improve their properties. Businesses in Queenstown struggle to pay their rentals (thereby lowering wages) to pay for the exhorbitant unearned capital gains of property investors.

Jon Huntsman, Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney – who all at one point supported steps to curb global warming pollution – have since tempered their stances. But unlike Perry*, both Romney and Huntsman acknowledge the scientific evidence.

This world cup is turning into absolute crap.

Now, we find a fake world cup has done the tour around NZ … hilarious listening to the spin today, how ‘both’ cups are equal stature….tosh!!! The original cup in 1906 is THE cup. The one made in 1986 is a copy.

Mind you , I wouldn’t trust the maori activists who would like to smash the cup , as they did with the americas cup a few years back.

But hullo, seems we were on the money once again.

Social Development Minister Paula Bennett is refusing to rule out extending the Government’s newly proposed welfare payment card to adult beneficiaries.

Bennett has also denied flip-flopping on the payment cards which she described in a letter earlier this year as “highly intrusive”.

The National Party unveiled its youth welfare policy at its annual conference at the weekend which will give payment cards to about 2600 young beneficiaries to ensure their benefits are spent on essentials.

The cards will be given to 16 and 17-year-olds out of work and training and 18-year-olds on the domestic purposes benefit.

Who is running this war? This is about as inept as the Telecom abstinence thingy that got canceled today. Perhaps the Nats. should cancel this as well.

Oh dear,

New Zealanders are terrible at getting out of bed, according to ACC figures showing that each week 146 people injure themselves simply getting up in the morning.

As part of Safety Week, ACC today said that more than 7600 New Zealanders were last year injured falling out of bed.

“Falling out of bed may sound insignificant but 146 people are hurt every week as a result of these falls,” said ACC insurance and prevention services general manager Keith McLea.

As a direct result of the actions of morons protesting at Max Brenners outlets in Melbourne, a colleague and I went to one of their outlets today for (what turned out to be) an extended meeting.

I’ve posted more about it under ‘Where is the line on boycotts’ (see link below).

But I can definitely recommend this place – whilst no protesters were to be seen, the food and drinks were superb!

I am sure this is right. All the voter research I’ve ever done shows National voters are much more class conscious. To express it in an extreme form: National voters would rather be poor but better off than their neighbour, than rich but no richer than their neighbour. That’s why New Zealand is a low income country with vast inequality. It’s what we keep voting for.

Oh how so true.

do people vote against their interest because they prefer to keep ahead of their neighbour than make everyone better off?

St Peter’s stood at the gates of heaven and it’s about that time of the day when all the people entering have to have died tragic deaths. The first bloke steps up and when asked to tell his story he says:
‘I came home early from work and my wife was wearing a silky black neglige and there were two glasses of champagne on the coffee table in our flat. I then saw that there was a bloke hanging over the balcony and so I naturally lost my temper, went out there and started hammering his fingers until he eventually let go and fell 17 floors to the ground. Some bushes broke his fall though and he was still alive, so I saw red and went and grabbed the refridgerator from inside and dropped it on his head, killing him. Unfortunately the effort of carrying the refridgerator caused me to have a heart attack and die.’
St Peter says ‘Ok, that’s a tragic death, in you go.’ Second bloke steps up and says:
‘I was pruning my hardy perenials out on the balcony of my 18th floor flat when suddenly I tripped and fell off. Luckily I managed to catch hold of the 17th floor balcony and was about to climb in when suddenly this guy came out and started hammering on my fingers causing me to let go. Some shrubbery broke my fall by a million to one chance and just as I thought I was safe, I was cut off in the prime of my life by a falling fridge!’
St Peters says ‘That’s one of the most unfortunate tales i’ve ever heard, you can enter the kingdom of heaven.’ Next bloke steps up and says:
‘you’re never going to believe this, but I was hiding stark naked in a fridge when suddenly….’

My question is to the Leader of the Opposition: given that he is so concerned about youth unemployment, what responsibility do he and his colleagues take for the dramatic rise in youth unemployment after youth rates were cancelled, making it illegal for a young person to take a job at less than $13 an hour?

Hon Phil Goff: It is just as well that the question was asked of the Leader of the Opposition, because the Prime Minister does not give answers. [Interruption]

Mr SPEAKER: Order! Now, I ask members why it was difficult to see me on my feet. There was absolutely no reason to give an answer like that at all, given the question was asked of the Leader of the Opposition. Actually, I should point out that things have changed a bit since the Leader of the Opposition was last a Minister.

Hon PHIL GOFF: The answer is that at the time that Labour left office, youth unemployment was a third of the level that it is now. It was at that level because a Labour Government actually invested in skill training for people. A Labour Government created 350,000 new jobs, and a Labour Government reduced the number of people on unemployment benefits to 17,000, and that is a track record I am really proud of. The Prime Minister would do better to halve that.
