There is abundant evidence for life stretching back over 3 billion years, with macroscopic organisms capable of leaving readily identifiable fossils stretching back 500 million years. Funny how your error-laden 3,000 year old book of myths written by those Bronze Age goat herders forgot to contain this and a wealth of other facts that have since been determined by science. But then those of us here with functioning brain cells don’t regard this error-laden book of myths as the last word in knowledge or think that all the world’s scientists have got it wrong despite untold millions of hours of patient observation and analysis.

I was hoping that some of the highly intelligent people on this blog would post about the implications of the Penny and Hooper appeal case.
The decision reminds me of a quote I heard years ago;
“The government that is big enough to give you everything you want will be big enough to take away everything you’ve got.”
Some years ago the Tax Man disallowed a deduction for a shareholder’s salary because the shareholders had not resolved, in writing, to credit that salary. I had to pay for my negligence. Phuck it!
Now the Tax Man is saying, and the supreme court agrees, that although the shareholders of a company have unanimously agreed that salaries are to be less than $130,000, the tax man can rule that, despite the best intentions of the company’s shareholders, the state can rule that the company credit a salaries in excess of that previously agreed sum.
I would love to hear the opinion of civil libertarians on this matter.
There is something pungent here.

Piss off. There is nothing new about this Law nor about the fact that it was clearly an instrument of fiction to avoid paying tax. The taxman was right.
Its actions like this that impact on everyone. Don’t forget the taxpayer paid plenty to educate these fellows and paid for their services which were indeed not likely to be cheap.
Fair outcome all round.

There is going to be a lot more tax collected from people who used this. No different to the property speculators that have been nailed and I’m sure you wouldn’t leap to their defense.
Pay your share and the share can be reduced for all of us. There is no reason why they should be so entitled. Think of it like that. It’s entitlitest which none of you like.

Common sense prevailed.

Housing NZ wins eviction case

Wednesday, 24, Aug, 2011 11:49AM

Three Lower Hutt women have lost their long fight against eviction from their state homes.

Robyn Winther, Huia Tamaka and Billy Taylor were served eviction notices from their Housing New Zealand homes in Pomare in March 2009, following reports of gang violence and intimidation from three men associated with the women.

The woman claimed they were discriminated against because of their gang affiliations, and have fought the evictions through the Tenancy Tribunal, Lower Hutt District Court, High Court and Court of Appeal.

Today the Human Rights Tribunal has ruled Housing New Zealand didn’t act unlawfully on the grounds of the women’s family status.

Housing New Zealand has welcomed the decision.

( Indeed, I’ll bet the champers is flowing.)

This graph from ACT’s Roger Douglas illustrates John Key’s duplicity in first helping to cause, then pretending to care about, youth unemployment.

National, Labour and the Greens — all parties bar ACT – voted down Roger’s bill to reinstate youth rates and get kids off the couch and into work.

By refusing to allow kids to be paid less than adults, Key deliberately allowed the number of young unemployed to double.

Now he’s offering a dollop of your money to any boss who pays a kid an adult’s wage.

Why not just let the boss pay the kid a kid’s wage, and let the kid work their way up – the way most of us did?

It is a nice graph (save the unnecessary arrows on the right) – thanks for the link V2 – though one should note that the increase appears to be composed of at least 2 factors – the increase due to the overall increase in unemployed (note how the youth rate tracks the adult rate but with larger variation) as well as the removal of youth rates. It’d be nice to model that so as to quantify the unexplained effect that might be associated with the youth rate removal – looks to be on the order of 5-10% still – a significant chunk of young people.

It bemuses me how in the “web” people feel so free to contribute outright lies.

But I’m willing to believe that you have developed a mistaken view of my position on things Israel/Palestine, so can you please show where I have made this heinous denial of Hamas perpetrating terrorism? When you cannot, be a man and apologise.

I have read a considerable amount on Hamas, particularly in-depth studies by journalists and academics, and my view is that Hamas is a resistance organisation that, as part of its overall strategy, uses terrorism.

I make the point, however, that resistance per se is both legal and noble. In this respect, the equivalence with the French resistance is clear, although limited. The FR, for example, was not motivated by religious dogma.

I also make the point that Israel, even more unforgivably, routinely uses terrorism against not just Palestinians, but its neighbours and others even further afar.

It feels justified doing this, just as Hamas feels justified when it resorts to that tactic.

Both are in the wrong. This point is made clearly by the Goldstone report even though, as with the now dormant Palmer report on the Mavi Marmara massacre, it went out of its way to be sensitive to Israel.

That comes during New Zealand’s off-season when Northern Hemisphere production is near its peak, and dairy prices fell 0.9 per cent to a trade-weighted US$3,660 per metric tonne in the latest globalDairyTrade auction, Fonterra Cooperative Group’s online trading platform.

Crude oil exports rose 22 per cent to $212 million in July, and have dropped an annual 3.2 per cent to $2.04 billion.

Its OK Auckland sucks and you come from the place old people go to die. we have lots and lots of beaches Wine from west Auckland Matakana and Wiaheke. one overgrown mud flat like yours and the waitamata. You have a small industrial area and we have five or six bigger. Your main shoping precent would be smaller than west Auckland plus we have Albany north shore manukau stonefeilds silva park etc Aucklanders can go to a different restaurant or bar every week for ever you would run out in the first year. Most of what you buy comes thru or from Auckland you guys just ship logs meat and milk.

According to general relativity, the universe is finite but without boundaries, so that is why it appears uniform in every direction. Due to gravity, space is actually bent in on itself so that if you were to go in a straight line, eventually you’d end up back where you started. The shape of the universe is impossible to visualize, and can only really be described mathematically. Suffice it to say, there is no edge to the universe, just a spacial continuum. There is no such thing as “outside the universe”

OK – try this lie: You cite Goldstone and hold his report as some sort of tacit support for your “Hamas=good / Israel=bad) propaganda, but the truth, of course is that Richard Goldstone reconsidered and retracted his report’s central conclusion, namely that Israeli political and military leaders specifically intended to kill innocent Palestinian civilians.

But even before Goldstone’s reconsideration, many objective readers of the report could not find any hard evidence to support that unlikely conclusion, for an obvious reason: No such evidence is cited in the body of the report. The best those who wrote the report could come up with was an inference that since so many civilians were killed, that result must have been intended.

Even one civilian death is too many but such deaths are inevitable when combatants hide among civilians, fire rockets from civilian areas and use civilians as human shields—as Hamas routinely does.

And another lie: “The science is settled”. What crap. I suppose you were also at the forefront of the Y2K hoax too???

Interesting you also describe the conditions inside the event horizon of a black hole. Past the event horizon C is no longer constant as light can no longer reach escape velocity. As light leaves an observer at C and can not reach the horizon does that mean a black hole is outside of our universe even when its inside?

You see, this is the sort of nonsense debate wallows in on this site. I specifically stated above both sides bad in the context of terrorism, in particular, but I could extend that to many other aspects of the conduct of both.

Israel’s primary conflict is not with Hamas. That is but a subtext of the wider issue.

As for the Goldstone report, not only would you be bewildered about what Goldstone was supposedly retracting if you read the report, as I have, but it takes a strong stomach, his co-authors, all eminent in their own right, stood by the report.

Like Benny Morris, Goldstone faltered under the pressure from the Israel elite.

I came back here to actually make a point about tonight’s Backbencher’s programme, where they are talking, amongst other things, teacher performance pay. Auckland Grammar quoted as an outstanding school, and there are suggestions of setting up a Porirua campus.

Now for a couple of facts.

Auckland Grammar is a state school.

The teachers are paid on the state scale that applies to all state schools. A teacher at Auckland Grammar is paid the same as if he/she was at James Cook High School in Manurewa.

Ergo, performance pay is a giant red herring.

By the way, how principals reward good teachers is with management units, but, a final point, good teachers are not motivated by money.

And I am as sure the education department would happily entertain the idea of a Porirua campus for AG as I am sure that John Morris would run a fucking mile from that idea, quick fast!

The basic science is in and accepted as irrefutable (until an alternative comes along, of course, which it hasn’t).

Yes, there are significant uncertainties relating to the consequences of AGW.

But the view that the “science is settled” relates to the basic fact that human caused emissions are causing potentially catastrophic climate change for both humans and many other species.

If you dispute that, you truly are fucked in the head.

And before I go back to Backbenchers (paused, the beauty of MySky) there’s this:

As even Israel says, this is disputed.

The unanimous decision of the bench of five Supreme Court judges, led by Chief Justice Sian Elias, agreed with the Court of Appeal that “income derived from personal exertion should belong in its appropriate taxation band and should not be inappropriately diverted away.”

The country’s highest court also admonished the way evidence was presented in the surgeons’ favour by PricewaterhouseCoopers New Zealand chairman, John Shewan, and dismissed suggestions the decision can be seen as “revolutionary”, given similar decisions 50 years ago in the Australian High Court and Privy Council.

Fairly clear and obvious decision despite the blatter from Sherwin.

The court was critical of John Shewan’s expert witness evidence, which included views on the legal issues in the case, leading to both the Appeal and Supreme Courts setting his evidence “to one side”.

“It is undesirable and wasteful of time and effort of both parties when such material appears in expert briefs of evidence,” the Supreme Court judgment says. “The practice of including it should stop. If it persists, courts should require amended briefs to be filed.”

Shewan also copped flak for his role in advising Westpac on acceptable levels of declared income for tax purposes in another of the recent string of wins for the tax department, which lead to a record $2.2 billion out of court settlement of tax avoidance claims against several foreign-owned banks in 2009.

Brash wants tax and wage reforms

The Act Party will look at abolishing the minimum wage for people under 20 and dropping the company tax rate to 10 per cent as part of its economic platform.

Act leader Don Brash, who will deliver his economic policy speech to the Workplace Savings Industry Conference in Auckland this morning, said the youth unemployment rate – 27.6 per cent for those aged 15 to 19 – was a “scandal”.

Dr Brash repeated his support for scrapping the Emissions Trading Scheme and lifting the eligibility age for superannuation to 67, but believed it should be done more quickly than the recommendation of the Retirement Commissioner – though he did not have a specific alternative.

He wanted to cut Government spending to what it was in 2005 – 29 per cent of GDP.

This would allow a cut in the top tax rates – company tax, trust tax and the top personal income tax rates – to 20 per cent or 21 per cent. “But there is a choice of harmonising those at around 21 per cent, or alternatively leaving the top personal and the trust rates a bit higher, and cutting the company tax rate more aggressively.”

Luc, many have attempted to do so but if you cover your ears, shut your eyes and disregard the evidence, you can clearly (based on what has happened to you) talk yourself into believing anything. But I suppose that, given your advocacy for the crap written by the fiction writer Al Gore, you probably prefer to read history as described by Hans Christian Andersen or Walt Disney.

“Are global temps rising? Yes or no.” Luc, temps have been fluctuating (that means going up and down) for as long as man has been able to recognise the change. Its called a climate cycle, Luc – you really need to bring yourself up to speed with this natural phenomena. You’ll find plenty of evidence of this if you choose to look for it.

Luc, you are totally blinkered to anything but your own jaundiced views on everything. Your posts are a case of ‘your way or the highway’ – and this trend is replicated in the myopic views posted on your site.

I dont think the “end times” are upon us, I think civilisation is declining, and approaching a crisis point.

With all due respect, so what? That you see those things as evidence of things being better than before is evidence for me of exactly what I am talking about.

Safety, comfort, choice, number of years lived, these things are meaningless. Comfort and safety especially says a great deal about the modern world.

What about courage, honour, spiritual advancement, heroism, virtue? A short life lived with courage, honour and heroism is better than a thousand years of comfort and safety.

And if our society is so advanced and better than beofre, why do millions in the West have to see counsellors and take anti-depressents? Why do so many numb themselves with alcohol and drugs? Why are our crime rates so high?

There is no serious fossil evidence for Darwinian macro-evolution. The issue of the age of the earth is irellevent to the point I am making. I have no problem with the general scientific consensus on the age of the earth or the age of the universe, because there IS good evidence for that.

It did not forget, you just misunderstand the nature of the book. The Bible is the true story of God’s relationship with creation and with His people. It is concerned with moral truth and what we need to know for salvation, not “science”. The Bibles does not tell me how to fry an egg either. Nor does it tell me how to bake a cake, drive a car or many other things. It does not do so, because that is not its purpose. God gaves us the means to determine scientific truths on our own. The Bible does not deal with what you call science, or many other purely pragmatic matters, because that is not its purpose. That would be like asking a book on cultivating virtue to tell you how the combustion engine works.

Some of the most intellegent people on the earth DO regard it as true and free of error. The problem is that your theologically ignorant. You talk about “brain cells”, but you seem to me like a person who switches off their mind, and gives up independent thinking, whenever your new Priests in white lab coats pontificate. I’m a little more sceptical and independent minded than that.
