Buckle up – the placard wavers have a new ’cause’ to target….

So called ‘heritage fighters’ have been rocked by a court’s order to pay for a property owner’s defence of a proposed apartment development. The Environment Court says it is fair and reasonable for Devonport Heritage Inc and the Masonic Friendly Society to each pay $22,350 to Redback Develop. The Historic Places Trust, a party in the appeal case, must pay $14,900. The total award is a quarter of the $238,571 Redback sought to cover some legal and expert witness costs.

In a reserved decision, Judge Craig Thompson said one of the three court members, commissioner Heather McConachy, wanted no costs ordered. But all court members agreed with Redback’s complaint about tactics of deliberate delay and obfuscation.

Watch this space…. this could be fun.

Nothing like putting on a 4km/hr tolerance and siting the camera at the bottom of a small dip in the road, eh?

Before the 4km/hr tolerance was introduced, I thought people with radar detectors were arrogant S.O.B.’s who flaunted the law and risked our safety.

Now it’s nearly a prerequisite for cruising at anywhere between 90 & 100 (given speedo tolerance & speed at which the driver or cruise control can adjust for changes in gradient).

I seem to remember that once upon a time the presence of speed cameras was advertised to introduce them and make the idea acceptable. If they are hidden it is obviously revenue gathering but clearly warned is road safety. Not a member of the AA but support their call today for the trial and universal adoption of warning about the presence of speed cameras …. it is not a game as the police stress but road safety we are talking about.
Must say I am glad I have a vehicle which doesn’t encourage me to do more than the speed limit, open road or around town. I’d also be interested in knowing the proportion of the fines broken down to speed limit breaks … 100, 70, 50km etc.

I’ve just challenged Don Brash (on Facebook) to visit Australia to tell expat kiwis why they should vote for him.
I extend that challenge to all politicians and vote hungry parasites –
Come to Australia and tell us a) why should we even vote at all, and b) why should we vote for you and c) what are you going to do differently to encourage us to come back?
Ex-pat kiwis in Australia must be a large voting bloc that can’t be ignored, but traditionally have been (although I seem to remember Mallard came over here a few years ago before the 2005 election).

jcuk – they have signs for speed cameras in NSW. They are billboard sized and have the speed limit posted on them. There have to be three before a fixed speed camera. You would think you would have to be pretty stupid to get caught by one, however somehow people still do. QLD has 10 fixed cameras and four of them are in one tunnel, and all of them are on motorways in the SE corner.
Mobile speed cameras are a lot less common in both QLD and NSW (and are in clearly marked cars unlike the scum in unmarked vans every 10km along SH1 on a public holiday in NZ) and they must have a portable sign 50m up the road. But I think I might have seen a dozen of them in four years.

KiwiGreg – I still pay tax in New Zealand, every time I visit and buy something. I also have strong family (and friends) connections and am usually visiting 3 or more times a year. The country means a good deal to me, and it is getting wrecked from within. Yes I would choose to move back, but it has to be worth my while.
As to why should I get a vote even though I live abroad? I challenge you to tell me why I shouldn’t. I’m a New Zealand citizen and it is my right to choose how the country of my birth and where the majority of my family live is run.

How do you work out what electorate you vote in? Maybe I should know this but I always assumed there was a 3 month residency requirement.

What do you want done differently? Do you have realistic ideas on what should be done?

More of the right sort of jobs would help to get some to return. All three of my kids are overseas. One daughter qualified here and then went to Europe, had a great OE, quickly paid off her student loan, got married and now the family wants to return – a brain gain if a suitable position for her husband becomes available.

That is one view, mm, but I see that comment as being follow up, an explanation for the view pointed out in the headline. Notwithstanding you attempt to downplay the comment, it still means no jews allowed in the state of Palestine.

And re the USA Today comment, I have to disagree. Every time I have gone to the States it is absolutely everywhere. Indeed, it is generally the biggest selling newspaper in the US. Your comment seems to be simply an attempt to minimise the source, and therefore the story.

Back to speed cameras…and radar guns for that matter…

As practised in NZ presently it is naked revenue gathering and nothing to do with road safety. In the village near where I live, the favourite spot is not outside the school, or even outside the pub, which is inside the village limits…No, its on the outskirts of the village proper, about 50 m from the 100 K sign, where there is only one house up a long drive and the local garage (garage, not gas station). They do a roaring trade whenever they are there.

Howard Broad once virtually admitted in Select Committee that amalgamating the real police with the traffic cops was a mistake…only to “corect himself” in a press release the next day.

David G, Agree with you completely re traffic policing practices. Also, have a look at the moves the new NSW government have made to require the transit authority to justify their speed cameras on the basis of road safety. Seems a lot of them are going to be shut down.

The Police have an operation like that in Shannon David G. Been done at that spot myself.

Also, despite all my complaints, not ONCE in 4 years did the police ever set up an operation outside my old property. Our stretch of road (50km/h) was seperated by a Bridge over the tracks to the south and a 35 degree left hander to the north (50km/h) about 100m north of this it became a 80km/h zone.

South bound trucks at night were by far the worst offenders here, the’yd round the corner @ 90 and nearly mount the curb/Take out my fence/cars/garage/power/etc We couldnt park on the street because at night, those spaces would be filled a B-Train that could not slow down, let alone stop. I’m amazed that my property survived during my time there.

I’m not so amazed the police were so apathetic.

A few k’s to the south is a long, straightdual carriageway with opposing lanes seperated by a solid median barrier, Where there is frequently a mobile speed camera tucked in behind a bush to nab unsuspecting northbound drivers.

PRIME Minister Julia Gillard was stopped from getting on a bus with other foreign leaders at a Pacific Islands forum in New Zealand – and told by the driver to get on the bus for spouses instead.

New Zealand’s Internal Affairs department revealed the incident happened at the Auckland forum last week and Ms Gillard was offered an apology as soon as officials found out, stuff.co.nz reports.

The driver was immediately told of the mix-up and Ms Gillard was allowed on the leaders’ bus, shuttling dignitaries from a hotel to the waterfront, a department spokesman said.

The driver was not used again during the forum.

Ms Gillard was not offended by the incident, according to an aide cited by TVNZ.

It was not the only mix-up during the forum. At the opening ceremony, the MC told leaders’ spouses to “come up and meet your husbands”.

Ms Gillard was heard joking with her partner Tim Mathieson about the slight and put her arm around him as they left.

The gaffes are perhaps even more surprising considering the predecessor to New Zealand’s current Prime Minister John Key was Helen Clark, who held the position for almost nine years.

Some wit commented:

If one habitually obeys the speed limit, then it becomes a learned behaviour. That is the reason for speed traps. Attempted behaviour modification. Handy to pick up a few bucks to pay for the monitoring too.

edit: If people feel the need to raise the speed limits, then lobby your local rep.

I predicted obesity campaigns would backfire.

The Population obesity level will keep rising for around another 20 years — at which time I believe a maximum obesity point will be reached- this is based on my feeling that we are now saturated in fast food joints – people being born now will add to obesity levels until they grow into adults by which point in time everyone who tend to get fat in this environment will be fat .

The main differences between when I was young , and now, are the huge number of fast food outlets, TV is now 24 hours a day and we also have sky , and cheap gaming consoles.

If these things were banned and/or limited by the government I reckon the obesity rate would drop. But, fat and weak willed people would rather be obese than lose these things to the nanny state.

An elderly man lay dying in his bed. While suffering the agonies of impending death, he suddenly smelled the aroma of his favourite Anzac bickies wafting up the stairs.
He gathered his remaining strength, and lifted himself from the bed. Leaning on the wall, he slowly made his way out of the bedroom, and with even greater effort, gripping the railing with both hands, he crawled downstairs. With laboured breath, he leaned against the door-frame, gazing into the kitchen. Was it heaven? Or was it one final act of love from his devoted Aussie wife of sixty years, seeing to it that he left this world a happy man?
Mustering one great final effort, he threw himself towards the table, landing on his knees in rumpled posture. His aged and withered hand trembled towards a biscuit at the edge of the table, when it was suddenly smacked by his wife with a spatula……..

Traffic Police.
HMM.Appropriate time to say something.
Yesterday I came to end of our private toll road, (it belongs to the ratepayers of Tauranga), to see a man, obviously busy going about his work, pulled up by a cop in a mufti car, lights flashing as they do. He appeared to be giving the fellow a ticket.

Now here’s some issues that give me the shits about this.
One its a private road and built for the rapid transit from one end of Tauranga to the other. We pay for the privilege of
1. owning the fucking $50 million bill that paid for it.
2. The use each time of the road.

Question why the fuck are the police annoying us on our private road?

Question two. Why are these hopeless law enforcers that are paid so much as a salary simply posing as tax collectors. Well paid, expensive gear, expensive training and the best they can do with all that money spent on them is cop people for going too fast. Waste of my taxpayers money.

I have just had a rental house trashed. Trashed by a tenant who reputedly now has a $10k bill with the local Mongrel Mob for smack and shit. Do I see these same fucking tax collectors doing anything at all other than fuck all to close these shit heads down. Do they police the streets where they frequent, do they fuck. Home in bed asleep while the town is covered in graffiti by these Mongrels.
Ask them to do something a bit hard and they can’t won’t don’t.
BUT
Here is the irony.

A non violent person going about his/her lawful business goes 5kph over the speed limit. That person gets pinged, fined, held up from their work by soft cock police. The irony is that that person assists with paying the tax that pays the salary of that soft cock policeman.
A violent thug selling crack and shit, pays no tax, more than likely exists on the back of dole payments etc, is generally unlawful, drives straight on past with no repercussions cause he doesn’t care and anyway he is not afraid of the police anymore. They are frightened of him. Yep true.

Called a symbiotic relationship. Either which way the cop wins, the taxpayer loses.

Every Tax payer should have Get out of Jail cards. The rest go without.

Case 2.
Young man,given community service. OK so does his time as required all fine you would think. Hell no, he didn’t realise that once he finished his time that he needed to return once more to :clock out”. Apparently the system doesn’t just accept the reported time as completed.

Some weeks later pulled up by a cop as young fellows regularly are every day. Just cause they look young( and I saw this right in front of me in the last week cause there was no other reason. This cop actually made the road situation dangerous but that’s another issue.)
Hullo we have an outstanding warrant for your arrest. Really what for. Come with us. Down at the station the next morning after night in the clink.
It seems that because he didn’t clock out of the useless fucking system the dumb fucks at corrections that do these things issued a warrant for his arrest even though he had completed all his hours. No phone call to come and fix the problem (ah that would require initiative, ) no email to his email, (ah that would require someone to write a quick email),nothing, nada, zilch. Not even a txt.

So was required to turn up at court where he was given more time to serve.

We wonder why justice, corrections et al are such an expensive tax sucking monster.
That young man, who actually didn’t do much in the first place), lost three days pay, his employer lost three days productivity, the Justice system wasted God knows how much money because no one in there has enough brain power or the system is so automatically stuffed that it is unable to even send out a reminder txt , automated phone call or email to someone.

So the Govt didn’t collect tax on three days income and will likely collect even less now cause the cash economy will be attractive.
The country lost three days of productivity as did his employer.
The Courts wasted Lord knows how much on fucking stupidity
The Justice Dept. clearly is totally unproductive and incapable of any sort of people management.
The police, well what can you say, caught in a system that’s plainly bloody stupid because they could not look at the warrant, see the issue and let the fellow go so he could put the issue of signing off right.

So what does this young man think of adults and their systems? Given he is a systems programmer, not that much.
Given he is a taxpayer and plenty of it what does he think of taxpayer paid for systems. What can you say.

Now I know that plenty of the systems customers are trash and don’t respond but don’t forget that even innocent people are caught up in this behavoir, everyday.

I seem to recall that for the purposes of the Land Transport Act (1998) a road is defined as “any place to which the public have access, whether or not as of right” so who notionally owns the road doesn’t get you off the hook.

You do not have to be a speedster to support labling of speed cameras. My single ticket so far for speeding was some fifty seven years ago. I have no sympathy for people who get caught and think it is a game but neither do I think hidden cameras are right and proper. The police emphasise it is not a game yet they behave like tricksters.
